I hired Grade A Excavation to remedy several issues that were causing water seepage in my basement . Hugh, Mike and team corrected the slope of my side yard, adding compacted soil and new gravel to correct the drainage. They filled in a low spot caused by tree growth in the back yard. Most complicated was a paver patio that had subsided in crazy ways. The back stoop had tilted away from the house and was funneling water into a void right against the foundation. The other companies I contacted fell into four categories: bid a complicated solution at double the price; submitted a two-sentence bid with zero detail; took one look and turned down the work; or ghosted me entirely. What sold me on Grade A was how well they explained what I needed and listened to my concerns. Instead of a buried French drain, they recommended surface solutions (grading, correctly aimed downspouts, splash blocks and gutter guards) so in the coming years, we can verify they're still carrying water away from the house as designed. Grade A bid a fair price, showed up on schedule, communicated every day about progress and field changes, and went out of their way to create a solution that solves the problem -- and find the right materials that let us reuse the existing pavers. I knew in advance the price was subject to change depending on what they found under the stoop. What they found was actually a nightmare but the price adjustment was lower than I expected. I had a really great experience with Hugh and his team. They did residential landscaping work for me involving leveling the edge of my yard, cleaning up, expanding my yard with grass, adding mulch and planting trees. Before and after attached. In addition to the work a few things that stood out: - Hugh was incredibly easy to work with and honest. If there were changes that needed to happen we'd discuss it and he'd give an updated quote. The update was never absurd and made it so we focused on the job not haggling or worrying. - Grade A was one of the few companies I worked with where the owner seemed connected to all the employees. Hugh introduced them all, seemed to look out for them and acted like a team. They were all really cool in return. While Hugh and Rob both initially seemed to be decent people I can't say much about their professionalism or service and I can't recommend them. - I hired them for a grading job, retaining wall, tree stump removal and window wall surrounds. - They failed to show up on time for the walkthrough appointment, causing errors to be made in the job I hired them for. - They didn't complete the window well surrounds as initially quoted. - They failed to do the job correctly, and I had this verified with a structural engineer. The grading was done at a sub-par level. - When asking them to come out to see the work that was done incorrectly, Hugh responded with "I'll get you your 5 feet of grade that the engineer asked for but I'm not going any further, that is over a fucking foot of dirt" - Hugh took about a month to actually come out to fix the work that was done correctly that was then up to the standard set by the engineer, in spite of telling me each week he'd be out there to fix it "this week." - Hugh left the jobsite the second time without clearing the work that was done. I can say that Hugh did seem to initially be a pretty decent guy, but after he showed up at a different time for the initial walk around and walkthrough of the job in detail, and then continued to do the job incorrectly he was less than courteous or professional. I would definitely say look for better options. read more

I don't find a lot of contractors who are nice to women (or who think I know what I'm talking about). I didn't once feel insulted with my plans or desires - which is kind of a big deal, sadly. I couldn't be happier with the grading work these folks provided. They worked over the course of 2 days to dig down 2 and 4 and 6 inches in different areas so I could later mulch my former lawn. They dug out grass, pampas grass, bamboo, and ravena grass (deep roots) and left the place really clean after digging and hauling. When I asked for some caution tape to be put up so my neighbors don't trip on the sidewalk gap, they went above and beyond to do that. read more

We are currently in the middle of a big ugly project of trying to save our foundation, there are a lot of variables, one being improving the area around our house to eliminate water getting near the foundation. Grade A Excavation and Landscape has been a great team member to work with. We initially worked with Rob who measured, quoted and followed up with promptness. Then Hugh, the owner, has been involved before and during the project. He has had his crew arrive on time with the equipment necessary to finish the job. Hugh and Rob have both been available to work through questions. This phase of the project is done and we know they will be here after the foundation work is complete to finish the rest of the job, removing our driveway, pouring concrete and improving the drainage around our house. We payed for the work done now and then another contract will open for the work that needs to be done after the foundation work is done. Later this Spring we will have them back to install a sprinkler system. All of this has been an expensive, overwhelming and daunting task but if you have a hard working team on your side the task is a bit more bearable. Rob and Hugh have been great to work with and I would recommend them to my Mom or closest friend. read more

Best landscaping and grading EVER!! After living in our house for few years, we had severe grading issues which has caused water damage and leaking in our basement. We knew that our backyard needed to be fixed ASAP to prevent any further damage or foundational issues. Grade A Excavation & Landacape was recommended by our neighbors (through next door). Several ppl had used them and was highly recommended, so I felt more comfortable having them carry on our big back yard project. Boy, am I glad I did!! The owner- Hugh is fantastic!! He is very professional and responsive. I've gotten hand full of quotes from different landscaping companies and contractors and Hugh's bid was very competitive (waaaaay cheaper than Mega company like Egress who gave us some outrageous quote for re-grading our backyard). Not only that, their quality of work is top notch!! Our patio area and backyard looks fabulous!! Our grading is all nicely fixed too in all areas of the yard. I'm so glad I went with Grade A Excavation and Landscape and will be calling them for our future landscaping needs.
