What I remember pasties should taste like. Absolutely perfect light and flakey crust, right balance of flavors and diced vegetables, including rutabagas. We both scarfed a whole pastie and stashed two frozen pasties. Gram's has a large selection of pasties to suit your taste. I vote Gram's Pasties the best in Michigan. We stopped in St Ignace for another highly voted pasties but both of us thought the ingredients were overly chopped (minced) so the interior ingredients mashed into a mass instead of maintaining their own flavors. I've been eating pasties all my life and these are some of the worst I've had. I ordered a rutabaga/beef/carrot pastie that was dry, very low on spice and had an uninspired crust. I had to flood this pastie with ketchup just to choke it down - I almost wished I had some gravy like they use below the bridge... The secret to a good traditional pastie is plenty of onion and black pepper along with the beef and potato (rutabaga optional). The crust should be a bit on the rich side and have some flavor - not be thin, dry, crumbly and tasteless. read more

Wanted my friends, from out of state, to try pasties since that's basically the thing to try here. We were recommended to Gram's Pasties. The girl taking our order was quite rude. Judged and heckled my boyfriend for ordering a burger, even though it's on the menu. Not everyone was in the mood for a pasty. Just rubbed us the wrong way. Not eating there again. If you don't want people ordering non-pasty items, then take it off the menu. Everything pretty much tasted microwaved, but I enjoyed the broccoli and cheese pasty, regardless. read more

What a hidden gem in Escanaba. If you are not familiar with Pasties (pass-tees) then you are in for a delightful taste of Yooper food. Gram's is the place I frequent most because I am not getting the same thing all the time. I like to have different filings and I don't like a dry bland tasting pasty, but some people are into that (really I can't understand why). Gram's regular Beef pasty is able to be eaten without ketchup while most other places you have to bath the pasty in it, and it has a flavor to it. Also you can get some other styles as well, my favorite is the pizza pasty. They also serve these small dessert pasties they call Snails, they are filled with toppings like Apple, Blueberry creme, Raspberry, and Strawberry creme. Those are delicious. Give Gram's a try if you haven't already. read more

Maybe it's just us, but we stopped in for our first pastie experience at Gram's thanks to its "9 years" of top ratings. Boy we couldn't have been more disappointed. Bland and undercooked. Top it all off with a very rude counter person and we'll never be back. read more

Grams is the best for a solid pasty. If you are a fan of trying nontraditional takes on a Upper Peninsula staple. My favorites are the Swedish meatball and the spaghetti. The only thing I wish was that they had those special flavors more often (and more sauce)! read more

our rafting tour guide explained a pastie to us and told us we needed to try one while in michigan. we drove about 30 minutes out of the way to get to this place. it was a quaint establishment with a friendly woman behind the counter. we grabbed a pizza and chicken pastie to try out. neither one of us were overly hungry but we scarfed them both down. if these things were sold in chicago i dont think they would go over very well with how many good fried food places chicago has. however, upper michigan does not have this so the locals get pasties. you have to have that sort of thinking when trying these :) read more

Grams pasty are the best you can get in Escanaba! there's lots of people making so called pasty's around the area frozen and fresh your opinion on the subjec can start fights with the diehards. They were made simply with whatever they had on hand, so the miner's had a meal down below. With flour and lard crust simply folded to hold the contents of: potatoes, onions, carrots, rutabaga, parsnips and meat scraps and fatty trimmings with light salt and pepper to taste. Some reviews down staters suggested beef gravy because they are dry; and if you over cook or reheat them they can be so careful. Across the pond-Europe does smother beef pies with a gravy but that's a salty concocktion of stock and pan drippings. Grams are mild in the spices to please the majority of the public, consistently great tasting with no grisly beef or black potatoes hidden inside. I always stop and have a hot one when in Eski, the staff is friendly and will give you paper plates, knifes and forks togo and have a pick-a-nic down at Ludington park. Pasties are a matter of personal taste if you ask me. Every Yooper has their personal favorite pasty place and Grams is second only to Suomi Restaurant in Houghton in my opinion. Grams had consistently tasty pasties with fresh fillings and a tasty, but not overly crunchy, crust. Now the crust is a point of contention for many people. If you like a lot of crunchy crust then the other place in Escanaba may be more you taste but if you like a lot of good tasting filings then Grams is for you. They do have a lot of specialty pasties available and if that is the way you need to go to eat a pasty then go for it but if you want the real deal then stick with beef with rutabaga. The place has always been clean and the service friendly. I really do recommend stopping in at Grams as you pass through town. 4.8 stars read more

I hadn't had Grams in a long time and wanted to pick up pasties to bring back to Wisconsin. I was really dissapointed, all the vegetables were still hard(under cooked) , I got 5 pasties and they were all the same. read more

This place has a lot of options for different flavor pasties. We tried the chicken and the chicken cheesy broccoli. They are good sized, but the dough was a little underdone without any golden brown crust. The chicken in the chicken pasties was very hard to find if any there at all. read more

I was recently in Escanaba Michigan,and being from Upper Michigan pasties were a must. We bought pasties ( beef and rutabaga) the original,only kind we had growing up. They were awesome!! The young man behind the counter was very friendly and polite. We are definitely going back and I would recommend everyone try a Grams Pasty read more

hands down my favorite place to get pasties. I am a huge fan on the regular beef pasties and also the pizza ones. Every time I go there I get the snails which is a pastie crust with pie filling. I drive down from Green Bay and get grocery bags full each time. read more

On our way home from the U.P. to Illinois and needed one last pastie fix. Gram's is a cute little place with good food and friendly service. Pastie was packed full and top quality. I've never eaten a Pasty but my wife has and while driving in the upper Peninsula we decided to stop in Escanaba. The one place that was recommended to us did not have pasties ready so we looked for an alternate place. The appearance of Gram's was clean from the outside and equally clean when we stepped into the restaurant. I had the cheesy broccoli chicken pasty and my wife, being more of a purist, had a chicken Pasty. My experience was excellent. The crust was soft but tasted fine. My filling was over-the-top excellent. My wife, on the other hand, didn't like that type of crust, she was more used to a more flaky experience. In addition the Filling of hers was not anywhere near as tasty as mine. I would highly recommend Gram's for your pasty stop and specifically highly recommend the chicken with cheesy broccoli. I would give the experience five stars my wife would probably give it three and a half. read more

Had a beef, carrot, and rutebega pastie. Reasonably priced, tasty and hot (which was exactly what I needed on this 5 degree snowy day.) Also enjoyed some chocolate sold inside from a local candy maker. read more
