Would not recommend. Multiple bad experiences with arrogant and condescending vets on the staff. One told me that I needed to walk my dog. When I told her how many daily walks and for how long we walk each day, she immediately changed her tune and told me that walking isn't great exercise. Most recently, I was given inaccurate information about the costs of extra shots required by dog daycare even though I was specific and direct with my inquiry about the shot and booster prices. After the booster shots. I was told the cost was actually twice the cost that I was initially told. I encountered a complete lack of accountability, cooperation and empathy from the staff when I said I was given different information. I was basically told that this was my problem, blamed for being given the incorrect information, and told I would just have to deal with the fact that I was given inaccurate information. I reached out to the owner to express my concerns about my recent experience and never received a response. read more

This was the only clinic I could find near me accepting new patients, so I tried them. This was my puppy's first visit to the vet; my dog was very overstimulated, and I was overwhelmed. The vet techs were kind and tried to teach me to administer meds for an ear infection, but all Dr Krahmer seemed to care about was upselling and getting out of the room as quickly as possible. We have been taking our rescue pup here for 14 years, since he was a baby. We recently had to have him under for a routine procedure. The VTs there took excellent care of him, and answered all our questions, nervous as we were. We have had lots of routine exams, shots, teeth cleaning & a couple emergencies. Every time, all the vets & vet techs are so friendly, helpful & kind with our "baby". They are AAHA accredited, which means the highest quality care. They also have "stress free" methods including calming diffusers in the exam room that pretty much put our pup to sleep. That's relaxed! There is parking in front (on Grand) or limited in the back, even more limited in the winter with snow piles. read more

I just recently saw them during the Covid19 pandemic, and their protocols are impressive and effective. When I got my first kitty, Joe Meower, I was terrified of having to take him to the vet because I didn't know how he'd respond. When I showed up at the office, I felt relieved to find a charming, welcoming and friendly place. Over the years, I've learned that Joe does not enjoy going to the vet very much and the technicians and veterinarians at GAV are very sympathetic to this. They are very patient with Joe as he sniffs and growls at everything. They let him go at his pace, taking frequent breaks and they let him decide when to come out for more. I appreciate the atmosphere, the level of service and the cost - Joe gets great care for a very reasonable price. It's a great place. Very nice people and great doctors. The house where the practice is located makes for a very warm calming environment. I've brought many pets here, some with challenging health problems, and they have always provided super care. They have a good referral network as well. when a specialist is needed, they haven't hesitated. They also do have specialty surgeons rotating through their practice, so not only will they do routine surgeries at this facility, they also will provide more specialty operations like orthopedics with a rotating specialist. That's very nice. And I think they've also started doing some homecare things, really great thing for older dogs. read more

A GREAT vet!!! We have a young GSD who can get pretty nervous and sometimes shows his teeth and barks when new people approach. Grand Ave was AMAZING! They were SO kind and understanding. They have bandanas with calming pheromones you can put on your doggo, lots of treats around, and staff clearly know how to work with all kinds of dogs. We visited before our appointment and one of the front desk staff spent a bunch of time working with him. They specifically picked a tech they thought would be a good fit for him and she was! We did the physical exam, so many vaccines, and a blood draw that took many pokes without any issues, not even a growl. I actually go back across the river (i.e. from Minneapolis to Saint Paul) to take my kitties here, because they are that awesome. The staff is awesome! They seem to have a personal connection with each and every animal that enters it doors. They don't just know my cats from reading their charts when I bring them in for their annual appointment, but they actually remember my cats because they truly care about each and every one of the animals in their care. They have sat on the phone with me and reassured me that The Mitten was not dying as a result of the medication she was taking (to combat a UTI) but that she was drooling and rolling on the ground because that is what cats do when cats don't want to take medication. I should probably mention that I called them several times (making my roomate call once because I was too being crying and craddling my poor kitty. They never once laughed at me, or made me feel stupid. They took a lot of time out of their work day pretty much just to reassure me that The Mitten was just fine-she was just doing what she does best, being a cat. On a side note to this day whenever The Mitten sees my roomate (who would help administer her medication-it was a two person job) she starts drooling ala Pavlov's Dogs. We've found the staff to be kind, efficient and VERY helpful, always willing to go a bit out of their way if necessary to make our pet's lives a bit easier. Currently we're facing an end-of-life decision for our beloved standard poodle, and Dr. Stadtherr has been supportive, loving, and extremely sensitive as we examine alternatives to give our Atticus a relatively pain-free end to his long and happy life. We feel very fortunate that GAVC is just a few blocks away from our home, we can walk there easily. I'm a first time cat owner (I adopted Charlie, my grey tabby, from Petsmart) and everyone at the Grand Avenue Veterinary Center has been incredibly helpful. I know this makes me sound like a crazy cat lady, but my favorite thing about this place is the VTs and vets address my cat first, then me. I like knowing that their priority is my kitty. I was given some great advice about diet on my first visit, the exam was free because Charlie was rescued by Animal Control, and the VTs did such a great job implanting his microchip that he didn't even make a sound. Charlie had to go in again today because of he kept scratching his ear - instead of just throwing a prescription at me, Dr Stadtherr put quite a bit of thought in to what was causing him to scratch. She even said she will call and check in on him later this week to make sure he's improving. read more

This is our primary veterinarian and the best I have found in St. Paul. Our beagle was adopted as a senior and he had the nose and appetite to go with his breed. The have been nothing but friendly and helpful navigating the world of aging dogs that like to eat things they shouldn't. Usually I just call, explain what the symptoms I am witnessing are, and they tell me whether or not that is normal and if I should bring him in. In addition, the online pet portal is great for getting vet records in a flash. No calling and waiting to mail or pick up. I was here in Minnesota for only a few months but they treated us like our old vets. when Captain my black mouth cur had a very unusual (for him) bout of diarrhea they saw us right away, and spent time understanding all the symptoms and concerns of a crazy dog parent. Cap was feeling better that same day! They then told me he was due for his yearly shots in a months time, and that I wouldn't be charged for a visit, just the shots. Once again Grand Ave Vet has proven to be a caring, responsive, excellent veterinary clinic. We just adopted a kitten and her first wellness check went really well beginning with the pheromone towel provided for her crate at check in through a wellness check and shots. As expected from past experience with this clinic, everyone was kind, calm and gentle with our kitty throughout the visit and she was not traumatized at all. This was a relief because the foster parents had warned us that she may need to be sedated for vet visits which I was confident was not going to be necessary given the calm, caring environment created by this clinic. Sedation was not needed at all. This will be our fourth pet cared for by this practice - two dogs and now two cats. They are great with all life stages of your pets. All of our boys (2 cats, 2 dogs) have had their primary care visits at Grand Ave Vet since moving to St. Paul in 2011. My gratitude to their establishment has been especially abundant lately as this past month came the need to make end-of-life arrangements for my old man of a black lab, who had been my companion for 14 long years. I had no idea how to even begin planning for such a thing, but the Grand Ave staff made it as gentle a process as it could have possibly been. They were flexible and accommodating with our household scheduling needs and incredibly compassionate throughout the entire process. As much as I wish my boy was still with me, Grand Ave did everything they could to give him the comfortable and peaceful crossing he so deserved. I have been bringing my rescue dog to Grand Avenue Veterinary Center since I adopted him about 3 years ago. From the beginning, the staff and service has always been top-notch. My dog's first exam was free because he was an adopted animal. I also received a few months of free of both flea preventive and heartworm medication; a great deal and incentive for adopting a rescue animal. I have never had problems getting in for an appointment, even when I had a sort-of emergency and had to be seen the same morning. They have extended evening hours once or twice a week and are also open for part of the day on Saturday so if you are unable to take time off of work for the vet it's not a problem. Their online scheduling option is great and I have been using it almost exclusively since they started it. I also like being able to access my dog's medical history anytime online. The vets and techs are wonderful. Until recently, it was an all-female staff, which is great for my dog who is nervous around men he doesn't know. On our last visit we saw a male vet tech but he didn't have to handle my dog and it was just fine. I'm sure I could ask for a female one if it was an issue. While you have the option to see a specific vet each visit, I have always just seen whoever was available and really like them all. My dog is a bit of a challenge because even at just 7 pounds, he pretty much has anxiety attacks every time we go to the vet and hollers and can get a bit feisty. They've always handled him with great care and knowledge. An added bonus is the nice setting the office is in. It is in a cute little Victorian house on Grand and it has a nice, homey feel. Not too clinic-like. There is a small parking lot in back for a few cars, but I never have problems parking on that block on Grand; I almost always can park right in front of the office no matter what time of day.
