You might remember this venue was previously occupied by Stone Willy's Deli. Stone Willy's has gone forever and out of the ashes has emerged Grand Central Kitchen... Which is an improvement (to say the least). Grand Central Kitchen was another business that popped up whilst I was away and once I was made aware of it, I decided I would pop down and see if the new offering was like. Grand Central seems to be a much brighter and bigger venue (or more cleverly laid out) than it's predecessor. Mainly in place to offer a resting place for commuters using New Street Station, it has it's purpose and seems to be able to cater for it fairly well. This venue has a range of tables and offers power points and WiFi (perfect for that hour/half hour before you catch the train) and offers a range of convenience food, snacks and hot drinks. I was planning to visit and do a bit of work as an afternoon office, but it didn't feel like that sort of venue. There were a few commuters whiling away a short period before moving on to their next destination and a few people ordering a late lunch when I popped in. The food and drink centres around jacket potatoes, baguettes/sarnies, salads and pizza's and the venue offers a range of hot drinks (coffee, tea and hot chocolate) and seems to be reasonably priced for the location. I grabbed a quick Americano to go (priced at £2.20) and snapped some quick photos before sitting in the cathedral grounds. The service was polite and friendly and the coffee was actually fairly good (considering what you might find in the station). I wouldn't say this is the sort of coffee shop you're going to sit and write your next award winning novel in, but if you have some time to kill before catching a train or want to grab something substantial before a journey (they do offer takeout too), I would definitely opt to grab something from here over the offerings in the station itself.

Popped in this morning to try it out. Ordered a flat white, competitively priced at £2.40. Was asked if I wanted it strong, I like this place already. Went to pay with card as I stupidly never carry cash. As they only opened 3 days ago the guy said it wasn't connected up yet. But! He was so kind and trusting to say to pay him later, and gave me a free amaretto biscuit. The decor is dark but contemporary, big windows at the front let plenty of light in to offset the dark brown walls. There is free wifi and charging points but I haven't sat in yet and used either. Menu is well varied with enough different types of coffees and tea, breakfast sandwiches, pizza, burgers, hot sandwiches and meal deals. Also a fridge of cold drinks on the way in. I will be returning later today to settle my bill and probably buy another drink.

Monday morning coffee is pretty much a necessity. My morning cup today came from the newly renamed Grand Central Kitchen. Conveniently located right outside the station this is a nice little find as It is very fairly priced for both coffee and food items. I paid £2.30 for a late latte that at some places in the area can be closer to £3. As my train was not too far away I decided to take away, but I would come back here again. A pleasant start to another week.

I met a friend here for breakfast one Monday morning. Great independent for breakfast or lunch. I had a bacon and sausage bap and flat white for £5. It will be much better when all the tram works are completed.

When I first started with Yelp, I threw this question to the masses; "Where is the best tea shop in…read moreBirmingham?". One of the first recommendations I received was the Edwardian Tea Room. Now, I have always known this place existed - but never had a chance to visit. This was finally rectified last week. The Edwardian Tea Room is housed within the fantastic Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (on Victoria Square). You need to head in the building, up the stairs and through the shop and the Buddha exhibit to find it. Decorated beautifully, the tea room really does feel like you've stepped back in time. No music plays in the background, but you can hear the murmur of conversation, the scraping of chairs along the floor and the clanging on trays as the staff clean up the empty tables. The menus are displayed on the wall (rather than individually on tables). You need to head up to the counter and order before you find a table (although if you're in a group, you would do well to bag a table first). The Tea Room (as you would expect) has a large selection of cakes (and tea, of course). A slice of cake and a pot of tea is a bargainous £2.95 - meaning it's a wallet safe alternative to some of the more hipster coffee and tea shops in the centre of town. Again, as previously mentioned, it's very popular with an older crowd due to the prices. However, on my visit their were older visitors, young people and families (who were catching their breath after trekking around the huge museum). I grabbed a herbal tea (£1.60) and took a seat in the large room to do a little bit of work while I enjoyed my hot drink. As well as tea, coffee and cake, there is a varied menu on offer for very reasonable prices. A large fish and chips (with all the trimmings) and a cup of tea was around £7.50. Not too bad, and they offer many other hot options too. Even on my many trips to BMAG, I haven't ever taken the opportunity to visit the Tea Rooms. Following my trip last week, there is a good chance I'll be back JUST TO visit the tea rooms.

Such a beautiful place to spend time. It's a great way to end or start a visit to the museum but…read moreyou can also just pop in for food and drinks which I've done before. As I said, it's completely lovely. It was re-decorated about a year ago, which improved an already lovely space. Mis-matched furniture and big prints of Edwardian ladies sit perfectly in the lovely, big, light room. There are tables for big groups and soft chairs for cosy coffees. I've had a fish finger sandwich here which was nice but nothing to write home about. I've also tried the afternoon tea which was lovely, especially the cakes. It's not a particularly fancy afternoon tea but it makes a lovely lunch. The highlight here is really the space and the atmosphere- definitely worth spending some time in.

I think they could put some more filling on in some cases though. You pay a little bit extra if you want to eat in which is normal nowadays to be honest. The lady that served me was very friendly and struck up a conversation while she made our order. Considering she was new she was very calm whereas some of the other staff members looked a little bit stressed out. I wouldn't blame them it does not look easy. It took at little bit of time to receive my order, but it was beautifully made, served at a suitable temperature (when I've eaten them at other places before they've often been too hot to eat) and was a lovely option for lunch. My friends had the ham and cheese option and a strawberries and cream option, and they were equally as lovely! I'm certainly looking forward to revisiting!

I went here with my wife and two friends as part of a yelp event. First off, I should say that I'm an avid meat eater and don't typically go for vegetarian fare. However, Marmalade is the kind of restaurant that makes me want to eat vegetarian (or at least close to it) regularly. As an appetizer I got the coffee infused lamb rump with a prune glaze, sweet potato mash, and edamame beans. It came paired with The Duke of Earl non-alcoholic aperitif which was made with fresh lemon juice, jasmine and peach syrups, and chilled earl grey tea. Both of these were excellent. The lamb was cooked perfectly and the combination of flavors and ingredients was particularly unique. For the main course I got the marmalade garbanzo: chickpea patties served in a Mediterranean stew (with carrots, courgettes, and a couple other veggies) with balsamic glaze. I wasn't sure what to think at first because I thought this meal as a main wouldn't be very filling, but boy was I wrong. It came with three giant chickpea patties (essentially giant falafals) which I almost couldn't finish. They were delicious and were very tasty drenched in the stew sauce, so I powered through. I got the Captain Ahab's Grog, which was recommended with this meal, that consisted of Brugal Dry Spiced Rum, Ginger Preserve, Apricot Liqueur, Plum bitters, and pomegranate juice. This was my favorite beverage of the evening. Additionally, the drink paired particularly well with food and I found myself eating a bite and having a sip immediately afterwards so the flavors would mix. For dessert, I got the coconut panna cotta with pineapple, mint, and chili. Again, there's nothing bad I can say about this. It was delicious. I also got the Eu Te Amo cocktail which consists of Bombay Sapphire gin, Framboise Syrup, lime, and conde villar vegan wine. Now, I don't typically like gin or wine, but despite this I enjoyed this beverage (albeit not as much as the others). Last, but certainly not least, I want to comment on the great customer service we received. Our server, Faye, was attentive, helpful, and just plain nice. I very highly recommend Marmalade and will definitely be back there myself!

Finally had the chance to check out Marmalade!…read more I've yet to be disappointed by a Bitters n' Twisted venue... Marmalade is no exception. The standard of food and cocktails is exceptional, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. The space is brilliantly designed as it occupies a good section of the Rep's lobby, and has a mix of tables and spacious comfortable booths. The food and drink impressed. I usually don't go into menu details, but it's really worth talking about. We started with the coffee-infused lamb, which was absolutely divine. It was paired with an aperitif of cold earl grey tea with jasmine and peach syrup. For the main course, a vegan dish! A new addition to the menu- the 'Marmalade Garbanzo', which is chickpea patties in a mediterranean stew. So good! And filling! Paired with 'Captain Ahab's Grog'-- a rum drink with ginger, apricot, plum bitters, and pomegranate juice! Yum! And finally dessert: a coconut panna cotta with pineapple and hot chilis. Nom nom nom nom. Service was friendly and attentive, and the menu was quite reasonable! Definitely worth going for a pre or post-theatre meal, or any other day of the week for that matter. I'll be back!
