We have visited for the previous 2 summers and have always been welcomed and seduced by the laid-back good-living of Tuscany by the sea. This is far away from 'Chianti-shire' and you are unlikely to meet other Brits here. The resort is a tiny haven and fairly exclusively Italian with a smattering of German and Dutch accents to be heard. The sea is often crystal clear and if you hire a car there is so much to do in the local area. The hotel owner Stefano and his extremely welcoming team will make sure that you experience the best of the area- we come back every year wishing we could have stayed! (The map that accompanies this hotel listing has the hotel inland but in fact it overlooks the marina on the peninsular of Talamone.)

Tiny back roads, and there is nothing nearby. Finally, you arrive to the gates and the magic that holds Il Pellicano. We were taken to our room, and to be honest we ended up switching rooms as the first room was far off in a cottage and had an old bathroom. The new room was a junior suite in the main building with stunning views of the Mediterranean. We had our own patio and a new gorgeous white marble bathroom. Sheets were very nice and the bed was comfortable. I did not love the pillows. They have their own line of organic bath products and while the bottles are adorable, I didn't love the smell or quality of the products themselves. We dined in both of the restaurants, the formal two michelin star restaurant as well as the more casual Pelli Grill. Both were excellent and make it easy to stay at the hotel all day long. The beach area is the most dramatic and gorgeous that I have ever seen. They have an excellent snack menu with a long assortment of homemade ice teas and lemonade. It's lovely to spend the entire day here. We swam in the ocean even though it was absolutely freezing. It was fun nonetheless. There is a beautiful spa and gym. We had massages that were ok, and I had a great polish change. The gym had a lovely selection of machines, weights and waters. To sit and have a cocktail before dinner was just heavenly. They have a very talented pianist and they bring you the most gourmet snacks while you enjoy your pre-dinner drink. They brought us dog bowls and a bed for our little dog and were friendly but he was not allowed at restaurants, which seems to be a common theme in Italy. Overall a fabulous hotel and I cannot wait to return.

We had a van and it unfortunately got dented in the process of trying to fit into the parking spot we were given. We were in a triple room which was a twin sofa bed and a king size bed upstairs in a loft. It was a big room. The restroom was a little dated and there was some mold in the shower. The hotel even has a thermal pool on the property. It took less than 5 minutes to walk through the wooded trail to the waterfalls. The river is very shallow and easy to cross to jump in the falls. They were very warm and just lovely at sunset. The owners give excellent advice for restaurants. We went to Due CIPPI, which was pricey, but every bit worth it. They were very friendly, the food was excellent and of the region. We even saw a fox that the owner has been feeding for 2 years! For something more family friendly, I can recommend the pizza place at the end of the road before you turn left to go to the town of Saturnia. The bathroom was super clean. Ahhh. Hotel is right in the village and we had windows and a balcony overlooking the port. It was in walking distance to the beach and the village. The hotel staff was friendly and and remembered details about us every time they saw us (in a helpful, not creepy way). They had trustworthy entertainment for kids, so that we could leave our daughter for an hour or two on Saturday evening -- essentially free babysitting -- while we strolled around the village. I eat gluten free and the sweet hotel restaurant staff remembered and always brought me a gluten free plate of bread with my meal (not that I wanted it! :) ) and brought me a basket of gluten free pastries to choose from every morning. By only the second morning, as soon as they saw me enter the breakfast room, they swept upon me making sure I had good options for breakfast (again, not that I wanted pastries, but...). And, in general, they made sure every other meal was gluten free and seemed to tell the kitchen staff to watch out for contamination. The only troubling thing I could even think to say about the hotel is that they put us in a suite with a room for our 4 yo that has a balcony that she could access. We were able to work around it to prevent her from accessing it without us, but...kinda dangerous. Overall, clean, spacious, friendly, good food....kinda homey. Did I say clean? I would definitely return.
