After a car accident which resulted in 6 back surgeries, I ended up at Javery after trying a few other pain clinics. I did not have a problem with the care received or the MD's or PA's, it was their "policies". After my 2nd spinal fusion, I was on 4 different narcotics which I never abused, yet was still insignificant pain. Obviously depression and anxiety go along with that and I began to abuse alcohol to cope. I decided to go to a 30 day in-patient rehab to deal with that and while I was there, the doctors weened me off of the 3 opiates and put me on Suboxone AFTER calling Javery's office and asking them if they supported that, which they said they "did" which the doctor there understood to mean that they would continue to prescribe Suboxone for me going forward. I had a follow-up appointment scheduled with Javery prior to going to rehab but I did not receive a reminder call prior, so I called the office and was told "oh, you should have received a letter, but unfortunately you have violated the pain management agreement and we discharged you as a patient". That left me scrambling to find a physician who had the special DEA license to prescribe Suboxone which at the time was rather limited compared to now (I actually had to contact the doctor at that rehab for 2 months after leaving there for there the Rx's until I was able to find another one.) read more

I went in to get some physical therapy as my foot was (and still is years later) in a lot of pain. I was hoping to learn exercises and stretches to strengthen my foot so it wouldn't be so painful being on it. Keith Javery walks in and immediately says "So what's your problem? I open up your chart and I see "drugs! Drugs! Warning! Drugs!" So what are you seeking huh?" I had an alcohol problem and have been sober since Jan 25th of 2020 In 2017 I was deemed addicted to drugs for my marijuana use as a teen. Needless to say, I left crying. I hope he goes to jail for malpractice. He does NOT care about his patients and is a slimy disgusting excuse for a person and doesn't deserve to be called DR he has zero respect and takes zero accountability So if you'd like a child to take care of your needs I'd say this is the best place for a toddler to take care of you. I have been seen by JPI for over a decade. They have always treated my pain compassionately, and made sure I knew all of my options. Pain is treated at this office, but as chronic pain patients know that treatments and medications ease the pain, not cure it. A lot of the complaints feel like people were expecting a cure- that's rarely possible for chronic pain. There are a few methods to help ease the pain- shots, pain meds, physical therapy, and surgery. If you are unwilling to do any of those, there isn't really much left that can be done, short of a magic wand, which no doctors in the world possess yet. There are also state regulations that have to be adhered to if you are receiving opioid care from your doctor, which includes taking random urine screenings, and being seen in between shot appointments. You will encounter those no matter what office you go to. read more

Grand Rapids Pain Management Practice Pays $215,000 To Resolve Allegations Of Falsified Medical Records Monday, February 27, 2023 U.S. Attorney's Office, Western District of Michigan GRAND RAPIDS - U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten announced that Javery Pain Institute, PC, located in Grand Rapids, has agreed to pay $215,000 to resolve allegations that it violated the False Claims Act by submitting claims to Medicare for medically unnecessary moderate sedation services and falsifying medical records to support those claims. "Truthful and accurate medical records are the bedrock of our Medicare system," said U.S. Attorney Mark Totten. "This settlement reflects the commitment of my office in working with our law enforcement partners to protect the Medicare population and maintain the system of trust and accountability necessary between the patient, physician, and federal healthcare programs." The United States alleged that Javery Pain Institute billed Medicare for moderate sedation services in conjunction with certain pain injection procedures when those sedation services did not meet Medicare's medical necessity requirements. After a Medicaid audit discovered this issue, the practice created template language in its electronic medical records to support medical necessity for these services. The practice then used this templated language for some Medicare beneficiaries receiving moderate sedation services to create medical records that contained statements that were not true. Javery Pain Institute used these statements to justify billing Medicare for moderate sedation services. Additionally, on some occasions, the practice billed Medicare for moderate sedation services when the intraservice time for those procedures was less than the ten minutes required to bill for the service. "The alleged submission of false claims for medically unnecessary services and falsifying of documentation to justify those services, undermines our federal health care programs and potentially places patients at risk," said Special Agent in Charge Mario M. Pinto of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General ("HHS-OIG"). Dr Javery was very kind and supportive but Heather, his NP, is NOT. She is never friendly and the way she talks to me, I leave sad and depressed feeling. She messed up ordering [or not ordering] my meds repeatedly, including ordering twice the dose of a med [two times] that would have given me kidney failure. When I brought it up, she yelled at me in front of staff and patients, and called me a liar. I brought in proof from the pharmacy at the next visit and showed Dr Javery. She never apologized or accepted responsibility. I spent 6 months having them try multiple treatments that didn't help me. Next was to try the spinal stimulator but Heather decided I wasn't emotionally stable enough to do it and talked Javery into agreeing to her plan to make me switch counselors back to ones I'd used for years in the past and to give me no treatment for 6 months. She even insisted I get a MMPI test when my diagnoses have been the same for 30 years and my psychiatrist wouldn't even do it. When I didn't agree with her ideas, she got me kicked out of the pain clinic. I am greatly disappointed that Javery didn't discuss it with me but listened to her nonsense. I was more emotionally stable at that point than I had been in over a year since a previous doctor had messed up the nerve burning in my neck, leaving me bed bound for 5 months. It's a shame Javery doesn't listen more often to his patients than staff with their own agenda, as it is a shame that MI Pain Consultants is now closing; but it has gone down hill in my opinion since Dr Gostine left. I used to get knee injections here for my arthritis issues. The problem is the area was not sterilized properly. All that was done was a quick wipe down with a skin cleanser and then the injection. I now see a different pain doctor across town who uses a much more time consuming two step sterilization of the entire knee area before my injection. It was my new pain doctor who explained deep knee injections can transmit bacteria far into the body, and hence the bloodstream, so this is a serious problem. You could end up hospitalized fighting for your life if the skin isn't properly sterilized before such a procedure. I'd advise anyone getting deep injections here at this or any other practice to think carefully before accepting sub-standard medical care. Your life depends on it. read more

The issue is not the Dr, it's the office. They expect you. to come in when you are having no problem to see a PA who doesn't know your name, doesn't know what your problem is, and cant/wont do anything about it anyway. The PA walks in and says "How are you Mr, or Mrs Whoever You Are?" You say fine. "That'll be $50". You have to take off work to do this every 6 weeks. It's pricey, you lose a lot of work, and nothing is accomplished. However, if you wait until you do have a problem they wont give you any meds to hold you off until you can be seen unless you've left work to keep all of those every 6 week unnecessary appointments. It doesn't matter if you've gone 2 years without a medication refill and always pee clean, it's their rule, one you wont know about until you stop the never ending circle of useless and expensive appointments with someone that cant do anything for you. When you finally run into trouble you then call and make an appointment that is actually needed only to discover they not only wont give you any drugs to help you wait until they can fit you in for treatment, but also tell you they wont set you up for a treatment unless pain is running down your leg. Now you have to wait. It doesn't matter if you cant stand up, cant lay down, and cant work, you still make you see the PA first. I swear, as God is my witness, every word of this is true. You never see the Dr. anymore. It's not the way it used to be. But this has all become so disfunctioning that we are finding a new doctor. I know several people that have stopped going here for the same exact reason. read more

I have had 5 spinal surgeries. 2 knee surgeries. 2 foot surgeries. Throat surgery, and a c-section. I've broken 26 bones in my body. I'm like a human weather vane. I was recently dismissed from Javery Pain Institute for non-compliant behaviors. That does not mean that I went out and bought heroin, cocaine, or any other illegal drug. I actually took the meds they prescribed to the T, came to all of my appointments. I obeyed the rules. What Javery defines as a 'non- compliant' behavior was me BEGGING for them to up my dosage of neurontin. I allowed the clinic to put me on a different drug, to see if it would work. It didn't. 4 months ago, we changed back to the neurontin. I expected a taper up to my previous dosage over the course of a month or two. That is ALSO not what happened. The last time I went in for my regular checkups, I was seen by a VERY young Physician's assistant who did not even known I'd had 5 spinal surgeries. She had no idea of my history whatsoever. She appeared to have absolutely no clue how to deal with a grumpy middle aged woman who was in pain, and had NO empathy. Now, I understand that Michigan has a law on the books that has reclassified neurontin as a schedule 5 drug. However, I took it safely for 15 years before this was enacted, there is no reason to think I'd take it otherwise. The problematic part, is that I am in SEVERE pain without the neurontin. The even more problematic part? Prior to being dismissed from the clinic, I was not even allowed to see a Doctor. I have no idea if he even knows what happened. However, if he DOES know, shame on him. If you're in this to protect your license, then you're in the wrong career field. If you want to trust your pain health to a group of underqualified nurses, who will cut you out of the clinic within 2 minutes if you're rude to them? This is the place for you. If you want to be ignored, especially if they can't help you IMMEDIATELY? This is the place to go. The doctors are great, but the people they surround themselves with are completely, utterly and inexcusably incompetent. I am really sad this has happened, and that the doctors have let a great clinic be taken down by their own staff. read more

Once I found how to get in the actual office since both the map and the signage are misleading... Dr. Suderman was great while we were talking. He listened, he took the time to explain, and life was great. Then when I went to get a cortisone shot. I have had multiple cortisone shots at my orthopedic surgeon's office, always done by the PA, always while in a regular exam room, always done by feel. Not here! I enter a sterile room, lay on a stretcher, and my entire knee is bathed in betadine. They're going to use x-ray when they give the injection to ensure they're in the proper place. Great! Or not great. I have NEVER felt such incredible pain! It felt like fire on raw nerve endings, and I could do nothing but whimper while tears rolled down my face. Excruciating! It was harder to walk after the injection than before, which is the polar opposite of how it works at the orthopedics office. He tells me because of my weight it was hard to see on the x-ray and he may have hit my kneecap with the needle. It's been almost 24 hours, and it still hurts like hellfire. Then the prescription. I tell them to call it in to Walgreen's at 4 Mile and Alpine. They chose to call it in to 4 Mile and Plainfield instead. So I drive there. Where I am told it requires pre-approval because it specifies the brand name instead of the generic. Plus, I can't get it anyway because their printer is down (the only problem in this story not caused directly by Javery). So I call, and of course it is 5:02pm, so I have to wait on hold for the emergency service. I'm told they'll page Dr. Suderman to call me back. There was never a call back. Instead, I called their office again at 9:45am to have them transfer the prescription to the correct pharmacy, and was forced to leave a message on the nurse's line. I received a call back over an hour later, and FINALLY got it sorted out. Now I have approximately 16 hours to get used to a new narcotic prescription in patch form that lasts a week before I have to drive and work an 18-hour day. Hopefully there are no problems! Icing on the cake? They scheduled a follow-up appointment for me without asking me what day or time will work. Luckily, to keep the appointment I only have to miss out on 5 hours of work (without pay). I'll be calling my doctor in the morning to see if they can refer me to pretty much anywhere else. read more

I wish I could chose zero stars. I went to this practice for pain in cervical spine area, and they became the pain in my neck. I felt no compassion and very ill-informed about treatment options. I kept the appointment for injections because I had spent a serious amount of time to get to that point and was hopeful for the outcome. I had no positive results. But more than that, I found this practice to be uncaring, unprofessional, bordering on unethical. The doctor seems to be comfortable with the role of Oz (the man behind the curtain), because after first visit, I only saw him when I objected to my treatment or insisted on talking to him prior to injections . I have been seeing Dr Javery for almost 5 years for neck and back pain from discs and arthritis. He always runs late because he spends time with every patient to review and explain things. He has an excellent bedside manner! He has done injections that relieved my pain after other clinics gave up. I do them without sedation so yes, it does hurt for a millisecond when he gets near the nerve, but if you can't handle that they will sedate you. He prescribes enough medication to make life bearable, but also offers alternatives to narcotics. I would highly recommend him if you truly want your pain treated, if you are just looking for drugs go somewhere else! read more

Dr. Javery will drop you as a patient with no warning. I saw him for 12 years. Around 2007 they started running studies to see if it would be good for people with chronic pain. Before I was treated by Dr. Javery Dr Corey Waller put me into the study. Three days into it I developed reactions. I swelled up as well as developed a rash all over my body and severe migraine. I was told it should go away. It didnt but I kept on it by taking one day at a time. I was on it for 6 months and needed to go off from it due to side effects and I was having back surgery so they wanted me to have a full 2 month without taking it. Buprenorphine is aweful to get off from. I had withdrawal symptoms for 9 weeks. I was on opiods on a few occasion and i found the withdrawal with opiods only lasted 2 weeks. The sad part is i went through the side effects and the withdrawal and burphanorphine never touched my pain. Once I got off from it the rash, swelling and migraines went away. After my back surgery I went to Dr. Javery. I was his patient for 12 years. When the opiod crisis went down Javery decides to put all his patients on burphanorphine who are on opioids. I was taking opiods for 7 years so I was scared about going off from it so I started calling detox centers and everyone of them told me to not go on burphanorphine, subutex, suboxone because its one the hardest drugs to get off from. The order they gave me was 1. Heroin 2. Meth 3. Burphanorphine 4 tramadol 5. Norco 6. Fentenyl 7. Percocet. Javery wanted me on it but I told him about the side effect. He didnt believe me when I told him I took it in the past. Then he wouldnt let me make an appointment to talk over my concerns. I also have an empty bottle to prove to him I took it but nope I got a letter in the mail saying Im no longer a patient. I cared about him and trusted him. 12 years with him. I thought he cared about me but all he cares about it himself. read more

I found the doctor to be extremely rude and stated inaccurately that I would have the pain from nerve damage from a broken neck for the rest of my life He made three sets of injections for the problem. None lasted more than three days. He then referred me to a psychologist to learn to live with the pain. Instead we went to Utah for the winter and found another pain clinic. After one visit and one set of shots I have had three months of no pain. The doctor believes the pain can have long term relief and he is pleasant and inspiring. I have been going to Javery Pain Institute for years. He has completely changed my quality of life. I could barely walk let alone sit, lay, or bend. I have chronic back pain and I was on all kinds of drugs. Dr. Javery treats my back 4 times a year. My life is so much better because of him and his team. I have referred so many to him and can't thank him enough for everything he has done for me. Yes he went through growing pains as his practice grew rapidly but he is always available and his one on one consulting appointments are so detailed and I feel like I would have been disabled if I would have had major surgeries. So yes I give him a 10 out of 10. I don't take pain medication because of his treatments and I'm so thankful! I also want to say his Team are compassionate people and I think the best in the state. Dr. Javery also saved my life by agreeing to a consult on my medications my regular MD of 14 years had me on and he was able to identify why I had lost my memory and was like a zombie. He spent time with me and my husband and he saved my life. If you or a family member suffers from pain period you should schedule a consult with him. I've been seeing Dr. Keith Javery for almost 20 years for a chronic pain issue. His bedside manner is always friendly, informative and caring. He is constantly striving to make me as pain free as possible. I've stayed with Dr. Javery even though it's a 90-minute trip to his office. There does seem to be a long wait from check-in to the actual time you're seen but that's in any specialists' office. I suggest bringing some reading material and keeping yourself busy while waiting. Overall, I couldn't ask for a better physician to care for my chronic pain condition. His Physician's Assistant, Aaron Greene, is a great addition to the office. I would highly recommend both of them. read more

I always love walking into Javery Pain Institute and seeing all of the employees there. Each experience is great!

I have RSD and complex regional pain syndrome of the right arm due to a recent and major surgery. I began going to Javery in December 2014 and have been to Javery four times since. Javery has done very little to try to help me with my pain. The only help I received was at my 2nd appointment with Dr. Suderman. A stellate ganglion nerve block injection was administered though it only lasted three hours when it was sold to me by Mr. Aaron Greene, physicians assistant, to last three to six months! At my 3rd appointment, I was told by Mr. Aaron Greene that the injection did not work though if I did x,y, and z they would prescribe me medication to help with the pain. I did what was required of me. At my 4th and final appointment with Mr. Aaron Greene he backed out of his offer to help with medication and instead referred me to another specialist which turned out that he was not accepting new patients. Mr. Greene, quite literally, lied to me. I told my PCP that Javery was taking over the prescribing of pain management meds based on the conversation I had at my 3rd appointment with Mr. Aaron Greene. This has caused a major headache. At that same 4th appointment he also suggested trying some more nerve blocks. Mind you, he just told me at the 3rd appointment that the nerve block did not work. A few days ago, I called Javery and asked for them to send paperwork to my Dr. notifying her that they did not prescribe pain meds. A nurse told me that she would have to speak to Dr. Suderman and Mr. Aaron Greene about that. Really!!! I humored her, and received a phone call the following day from that same nurse asking if I could come in for another injection. She never addressed my question. Why would I want to drive 30 miles to Javery in order to get another "dangerous" and "invasive" procedure done that "didn't work" the first time according to Mr. Aaron Greene? The only conclusion I can draw is that they are trying to suck as much money out of my insurance at my expense! Mr. Aaron Greene is a bonified liar! He is just a fast talking sales person who has a peripheral knowledge of medicine. Unfortunately for Mr. Greene he fails to document all the gibberish that comes out of his mouth and ends up contradicting himself at future appointments. I can not speak about Dr. Javery, as I have never been seen by him. But I was seen for years at his pain clinic by a Dr. Mark Clark. He was a very helpful compassionate and caring doctor who was always honest and up front in providing my pain management. Unfortunately, Dr. Clark left Javery Pain Clinic around March 2015, and Dr. Suderman was given responsibility for my care, with support by Aaron Greene, PA. From that point forward my care was pretty much ignored and replaced with getting me in for as many appointments as they could so as to charge my insurance and myself. Neither Aaron or Dr. Suderman believe in treating chronic pain with narcotic medication, even if it has been found to be the only treatment that offer any pain reduction. I found Aaron Greene very uncaring and he seemed to never remember anything he says from one office visit to the next. He only wishes to make any patient using narcotics to use several non-narcotic medications even if they offer no relief. If you attempt to complain about his lack of care, he accuses patients of being drug addicts. I would not recommend him or Dr. Suderman to anyone suffering from pain, unless they really don't want to be prescribed any narcotic medications. read more

This Pain Institute is only about pushing patients thru. Appointments are booked every 15 minutes apart so you get NO time to spend with a Doctor. You feel like a cattle call when you go there. I DO Not recommend after 10 yrs of doctoring...stay away!!! I too experienced problems with promises from Aaronne Green PA and the new Dr. Suderman, their lack of professionalism is amazing!!! I do have good news though, their best Doctor that they forced out because he wanted to treat patients with kindness and more than 15 minutes of your time was Dr Mark Clark, he is at West Michigan Pain with Dr. Guneja in Grand Rapids and Big Rapids.....AWESOME Doctors...run to Dr. Clark and save yourself the pain at Javery. They also kicked my daughter out who had a traumatic brain injury because she missed an appointment because my surgery left my arms and legs paralyzed and they were mad they couldn't get their money for the appointment, they had no concern for the ICU unit I was in...think before you go!!! read more

I want to start off by stating that a good deal of my experience at Javery Pain Institute was very good. Dr. Javery was my treating physician and I liked him very much. Yes, he was busy but took the time to before my injections to go over any questions and get an update on how things had been the prior 3 months. The majority of the nurses were awesome and Pat at the reception counter is the best. Now for the bad .. when I started seeing Dr. Javery, along with that came seeing his P.A., Aaron Greene for occipital blocks and acute treatment for the migraines I wasn't able to get rid of on my own. It was rocky at first, especially with the shots for the migraines. It was hard to pin him down on exactly what it was he was giving me. I keep close track of everything for my records and it was like pulling teeth. After talking it over with Dr. Javery, things seemed to smooth out for a few months. But then, at every appointment I had with Aaron, it felt like we were rehashing the same issues over and over like we had never discussed them before. It became so frustrating and I kept asking him "isn't that in my file from my last visit?" I never get an answer to that question. This went on for a couple of years .. some appts going better than others. It was like Aaron Greene did his thing and Dr. Javery did his and I had to deal with each one separately. I always thought the P.A. worked for the Dr. Throughout my care there, Dr. Javery managed one narcotic prescription for me (a quantity of 16/month). In early 2015, after calling their office to come in for shots for a migraine, a nurse called me back stating that Aaron felt that I needed to see an addiction specialist and until I did, all of my appts were canceled. This about blew me away. I have a medication that I take a few days a week and a receive a shot that I'm only allowed to get once a month. Although extremely angry and embarrassed, I cooperated and they were sent the "all-clear" by the "addiction spec". Though they still refused to continue to manage my script and after a phone call with a certain nurse which I expressed some frustration, I received a dismissal letter in the mail the following week signed by Dr. Javery but drafted by Aaron Greene. I am sorry I'm no longer a patient of Dr. Javery's but as long as Aaron Greene continues to work for Javery Pain Institute there are going to be more patients treated as poor and arrogantly as this. This man is a liar and doesn't stand by his word. It's all about injections, injections, and more injections. It's amazing, I've had occipital blocks done other places and Aaron is the only one that has had to use an ultrasound to do them. After seeing what they charge insurance for the 10 second use of that ultrasound, now I understand. It's unbelievable!! read more
