There are serious systems issues with the emergency department that need addressing. After a recent bad experience with my mother's care, with only one physician covering the entire ER, I reached out to the surgery director, Dr. Kevin Cope, to express my concern about his staffing model. I spoke with multiple staff members who were frustrated and stressed over the understaffing. Unfortunately, Dr. Cope did as many administrators do--he brushed off my concern by referring me to their patient advocate, thus attempting to shift blame back to us and avoid the real problem. I was disappointed in him but not surprised. We will not be back to Grandview. read more

My Mothers eyes were open and her back was arched I tried to calm these idiot children down for my moms sake they kicked me out of hospital and I never got to say goodbye. They let my daughter sit in a room for several days only to be seen by one doctor that wasn't interested in helping her, then she sat there for days getting pain medication until we asked what's going on with her. So so unprofessional. Absolutely unacceptable behavior from every staff member we encountered. From personal phone calls on her AirPods during intake to dried blood on the sleeve that went over the iv bag to speed drip. (Noticed that while putting the IV bag back on the hook after it fell, which the nurse also said it was impossible that could have happened) To the Vital machine not working when we got in the room, and they couldn't get the temperature to read on any of their devices. Had to find a Dr multiple times to notify changes in symptoms , got a condescending attitude from every person I spoke to. Oh, but the financial lady came in FOUR times to get signatures on paper for insurance money ‍ that was the only thing we had constant attention on. Even after I told her repeatedly that I was not signing it, and the patient couldn't sign it until he was able to read what he was signing & be able to physically sign it himself. The ONLY staff member that showed any indication of decency and kindness, was the young lady that took the patient back for CT. She deserves to be recognized for her 100% professionalism, kindness, attentiveness, and respect. I asked a question and she answered it so kindly & promptly. The Drs & nurses/PCA's need significant improvement. It's just as bad as Bessemer medical west 0/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND - drive the extra distance and go to UAB downtown. They need to enhance their professionalism, ensure rooms are cleaned & properly functioning before a patient is brought in, staff should not be hooting and hollering their personal life stories for all patients to hear, they can use their inside voices or utilize their break room & break times. Boastfulness & condescending behavior should not be tolerated, people are going to you for help and care. Learn the appropriate way to speak to people who are trusting you with their health. As a physician at another hospital that accepts patients for transfer from Grandview I can say I am frequently disappointed by the medical care done by this facility both in the quality of care they provide and how poorly they provide us with medical documentation to continue the care of the transfers we accept. The only silver lining of accepting a transfer from this hospital is that I know the patient will be better served at our hospital. read more

Go elsewhere if you are able. My sister (dx w/ cancer) was admitted for an infection. She became dehydrated AFTER being in this hospital for several days! How is that even possible? She has difficulty drinking enough fluids on her own so should be assisted w/ iv fluids. She was on nothing when I visited & her urine was very dark. When I mentioned this to a nurse, she said "it was like that when I got here" and left. Soooo, do something about it then. TERRIBLE care. Not only that but they don't seem to care period. No bedside manner, no sense of compassion. Additionally, they labeled my sister a "fall risk" despite the fact that she cannot walk let alone move her lower body to even fall out of the bed. Wonder if there's a difference in care between scheduled surgical stay AND being brought in by City of Birmingham ambulance. I understand a full hospital, but I spent almost 24 hours in the ER hallway, in pain, with NO way to contact anyone, unless I stopped someone walking by. This included having to use the restroom. I'm 74 YO with M'care. I have extreme HIGH ANXIETY and TRUST ISSUES!! I believe the hospital saw me as a "patsy' AND padded my m'care FOR all THEY COULD. NOT going into gross detail, BUT... 1- gave nurse (asst) list of my home meds, of which NONE were given to me and NO reason was given. THIS caused a major issue towards end of stay. 2- Scheduled for 2 minor procedures on Friday after being there 2 full days and prepping for them. Was told I was in AFIB!!! (Just had well checkup 1 monthe prior. CX'D procedure, called cardiologist, who BTW flipped me his business card first thing!! Was then hooked up to heart monitor. According to what I was being told, my heart rate and my BP was all reading normal (except when the staff came in and rattled my ANXIETY AGAIN!!! NOW, the heart monitor attached to me MALFUNCTIONED and had to be replaced. If this was the case(with my anxiety intact) HOW DID I KNOW THE MACHINE IN THE PROCEDURE ROOM WAS WORKING? Hmmmmm? 3- They then started with words like blood clots/stroke. 4- Procedures rescheduled. Prep crap again for 2 days over the weekend. Here's the gross part..... Staff left me sitting on beside commode for TWO HOURS at one point, which caused a flair up in my sciatic nerve (rt leg) and this is an ongoing problem I experience on occasion, but I keep it controlled. Couldn't put weight on my right leg!! WAIT FOR IT (refer back to #1) Because hospital was NOT GIVING ME MY SCHEDULED HOME MEDICATION (with NO reason as to why), I HAD MY VERY FIRST GOUT FLARE UP, EVER in my left leg!! I COULD WALK WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE HOSPITAL......NOW, I CANNOT PUT WEIGHT ON EITHER LEG!! When I got released (FROM JAIL), I literally had to be carried into my house. This is just about the gist of the WORST part. Leaving out the part about being ignored, being YELLED at by some of the aids...if I could have reached one of them, I'd probably really been in jail. NO EXCUSE FOR THAT!!!! I'VE BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL MANY TIMES, BUT HAVEN'T BEEN "SICK" SINCE THE 90'S. MOSTLY BROKEN/REPLACED JOINTS BONES, ETC. THIS HAS UNDOUBTEDLY BEEN MY WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. Grandview wasn't my choice to have surgery at since it's located on one of the most busiest Hwy in Alabama, but it where my doctor does all his procedures at. The parking garage is tight to where you have to drive cautiously especially if you're going all the way up to avoid any car accident. The hospital is easy to navigate through the building and the cafeteria plus the gift shop is all located on the 1st floor. The French toast wasn't all that good from the cafeteria and it seems you get better food quality in your room. During lunch, I'd order a cheeseburger and waffle fries which the burger was ok, but my fries wasn't fresh and hard to chew. Most of the doctors and nurses are really helpful, kind and professional, but we had one nurse named Ellen that my mom had which she has the worst attitude and very unprofessional to the point we had to request another nurse to care for my mom. read more

My wife was sent to the ER after falling at Alzheimers special care center. She was in the ER for almost 12 hours. She had hit her head and had lacerations on her left forearm. After she got back to her room, I observed that the lacerations had not been bandaged- I had to clean up the affected area and get a nurse to come put gauze and the stretchy tape over her arm. Shame on the staff at the ER- good thing no life was at stake. Never again, if it's in my control, will I allow Grandview to touch any member of my family again. read more

This would be a one-star review if it weren't for the Emergency Room care, which was excellent. My stay in Grandview was 10 days total (9/19/25-9/29/25. During that period, my request for a gluten-free diet was not honored. Since gluten makes me very sick, I ate very little during my stay. My requests for a patient advocate were ignored, even though I was at the hospital without any family present. My floor was cleaned twice in 10 days. Dr. F was unresponsive even when requested and when asked for my diagnosis or projected discharge date, I was told by him it would be the 25th and that he suggested I go to a nursing home. When the discharge date came, a nurse intervened as when they tried to transfer me to a chair, my bp tanked. I was told repeatedly that my insurance company was the hold up, but found out on the 29th that I was being treated for sepsis, was never told, and that my insurance company had approved my transfer to a rehab hospital on the 26th. This was my final entry into my diary: "9/30 - tonight I was given an enima and several stool softeners right before shift change. The enima began to work but my nurse had left. I managed to get to the bedside toilet but couldn't reach the call button. I did my best to clean up and got into bed naked. I was then introduced to my male nurse. Inappropriate and humiliating." *Postscript - I was in the rehab hospital until October 9th when I had an appointment with Dr. Ray Watts of UAB where I was diagnosed with Parkinsonism, a group of disorders of which Parkinson's is the most common. read more

I am currently standing in this hospital due to my child having a head on collision. The PA on duty is Sky, who I met because my child was not in a neck restraint and I wanted her in one. The other accident victim was in a restraint and right next to my child. I was getting off a plane to visit my child, but she was in a collision due to other car coming into her lane. When I first put eyes on my daughter after I got to the ER she complained of neck pain. So you know I was in panic mode. I asked nurse Emily why no restraint, she said because the Doctor didn't think it was necessary. I asked for the doctor. Waited... waiting... waiting... then went to the nurses station and explained that I was getting a little upset due to no doctor and no response yet. Nurse Emily got upset and started yelling at me in front of the entire ER staff. She said "I HAVE DONE WHAT YOU HAVE ASKED WHEN YOU HAVE ASKED, I AM DOING IT NOW" I lowered my voice and said, this is why we are standing here communicating about, and told her that it is me- not here and that I am only asking for help. Then PA Sky comes out and explained - no neck brace because she didn't think it was necessary, but would order one right now. This is what is happening on Christmas Eve at this hospital in Alabama. Nurse Emily stopped taking care of my daughter and the PA that they thought was a doctor never ever came back. And it is very clear that this hospital helps with adding to the fact that, historically people of color do not get the same level of care as their counterparts parts. Think of the sick people that has no one to advocate for them. Nurse Emily never ever came back and we have been here since 1:00 and it is 5:40 No other nurse either. But the other victim that got the same services - I talked to her and watch her go back and forth in a timely fashion- she left hours ago. (They were kept in the hallway side by side) I just went to the nurses station to graciously ask Emily if we have results- not yet. So at 6:00 PA SKY came over to apologize for the wait and explain a scan and now we waiting for a nurse take out IV. Still waiting at 6:15. Sent by a physician who discovered heart beat issues during a planned procedure. Dr. Included an ekg print out and a detail of the procedure. Grandview was nearest er. Almost no signs to get you to the er. Got directed to a parking deck, had to walk to an elevator, wait, ride up, go around the way to to find an entrance (again, no sines). Walk in and find a receptionist who hands out clipboards with paperwork and collects id and ins. cards. 3 hours later after a sad excuse for triage, an xray, and a blood draw (hours between intake and blood draw). I asked what was the process, how much time might it take before a Dr. would see the patient. Got circle logic. Hey, they did validate the parking. And there were plenty of signs disclaiming Dr.s don't work for the hospital, patients that couldn't pay would be offered transportation to another hospital.... I had my one and only child at grandview, where the doctor(s) and crna(s) almost killed me. The obgyn completely neglected my eclampsia that started in months 3-4 of my pregnancy, while simultaneously trying to tell me that my perfect blood sugars of 85-97 were gestational diabetes. While on the table for my C-section, my throat became paralyzed, I could not speak and I could not swallow. The two staff members behind me let me gurgle on my secretions as i struggled not to aspirate or suffocate as I was being cut open. The female employee read my lips when I was struggling to tell her that I could not swallow. She stated out loud "you can't swallow?" She then tapped, or more so petted me on the shoulder and said you're okay it's almost over. No suctioning. Nothing. As they tried to show me my child through the little window on the csection cover, they began to yell at me to look at him, because I couldn't hold my eyes open at that point. They took him away, put me back in the bed and acted like nothing ever happened. At the time, I thought they gave me something I shouldn't have had. But, Looking back on this experience almost everyday of my life, I realize that I was completely over sedated with the numbing medications from the crna. Every time they checked me prior to the csection, i was numb almost to my face. They never turned the medication down. I asked them to turn it down and was told no. I was having to remind myself to breathe because I was on way too much medication. So, when they laid me flat on the csection table, all the numbing medication went to my throat and paralyzed it. Lucky for me, when they pulled me back to my bed, and sat me up, the numbing medication went back down away from my throat and I was able to speak, swallow and open my eyes again. My legs remained numb and couldn't move for at least 4 more hours following that csection, due to over medication. The days following this traumatic experience were not any better. I remained swollen and was refused lasix every time i asked for it. I was given the excuse that this swelling was normal (which it definitely was not.) I was eventually discharged in this miserable state, only to have to return in urgent post partum eclampsia less than 48 hours later. This is not a way a woman should remember the birth of her child, nor a hospital visit in general. read more

My husband was there for two weeks, and for several days I came in to find urine on the floor that leaked from a full Foley cath. When it was cleaned it was done with a blanket that was left under his bed. You really have to be vigilant with your family's care. At least with our experience, which was not good. This was the worst service ever I was admitted into the hospital where I sat in ER for 15 hours I given Lasik for water retention and was given a pure wick urine collection system where I can lay in bed in and use the restroom the system stop sucking the urine in which I saturated the bed and I called for assistance so they could change the padding in the bed which took them forever so I had myself to get up and unhook myself from everything and take the padding out of the bed because I was soaked and irritated at this point I was told that my room would be ready shortly, which never happened later that evening about 7 o'clock I was taking out of the room which I was in and placed in the hallway with several other people that were in the hallway. There was another gentleman, an older gentleman next to me in a bed, and one of the nurses walked by and he told them that he couldn't walk that he needed help to the to the restroom. The nurse walked by him and didn't say anything so he asked the nurse that was sitting at the desk in front of him and telling him that he needed to go to the bathroom N I need it to go bad. They waited a while as I was looking over the desk. I see a nurse sitting there on her phone. A few minutes later she got up, walked over to the man and walked away at this point that really made me furious. After waiting 18 hours, I decided to leave and find care at another facility. read more

Extremely disappointed in the "care" I received n the ER. Severe back issues and have had multiple surgeries. My back went completely out and I was unable to get out of my vehicle. Therefore had to be taken by ambulance, preferred to go to St Vincent's because that is where my physicians are. Ambulance was diverted because St Vincent's was full so I chose Grandview. BIG MISTAKE! No testing was even offered, all they wanted to do was dope me up and get me out of there. I'm assuming it was because my Dr's were at St Vincent's. They continuously came to my room with a wheelchair even though I could not move from the bed to the chair. My body was even going into tremors because of the pain. The ER doctor stated there wasn't any neuro Drs on call to see me. I asked to be transferred to St Vincent's and they said they could not do that. No concern from the staff, they would just leave and wait and try again. At no time was there ever any attempt to figure out the cause of the pain. The Dr finally spent some time ,after my wife voiced her displeasure with the nurses, simply to get me out of there. Made it to the chair and was told by nurse she would come back and get me and take me to the car. I waited and waited in the chair still in pain and my wife was out waiting in the car for me. Finally a different nurse came with another chair and said she did not know I was waiting. Also of note was the ER was not busy at this time. Hopefully this was just an issue with the staff on duty at the time. After seeing the latest reviews about the Grandview ER there is obviously something going on. So much for Grandview being the newest and best hospital in Bham. read more

Probably the worst experience I've ever had at a hospital. We drove from Mississippi to have a procedure done because we were told it's the best. We were told to be there at 6:00 AM for the procedure to be done at 7:00 AM. As of right now, 12:00 PM, we are still waiting. They told us the procedure would last 1-3 hours and we would have to stay here after the procedure for at least 4-5 hours. We still have a 4 hour drive to get home. They told us we could get a hotel. What??? Really??? I would not recommend this hospital to anyone. The nurses have been nice, but that is the only nice thing I can say about this hospital. We have heard about every patient's procedures in every room around us. HIPPA violations all over the place. Nothing is separating rooms except a curtain. They gave poor Mrs. **** across the hall a Benadryl early this morning because she's allergic to contrast and they still haven't taken her back either. She may need another one before they take her back. Mr. **** next to her needs to get a sleep study done because his doctor said he knows for sure he has sleep apnea. They could at least have a comfortable chair for the family member if they are going to make you sit in the room all day and night. My first trip to the restroom was disappointing due to dirty towels on the floor. The second time I went to the restroom across the hall and there was no toilet paper. I told the nurse and she said she would call to get some. My third trip to restroom there was a note on the door stating "no tp" so I went to the one across the hallway. The nurse hit the door while in the process of rolling me into my post postpartum room. The bed ended up being broken stated that to the nurse several times I wasn't able to sit up in the bed the button was broke nothing worked on this bed at all. The nurse finally just came out and said we don't have any other beds to put you in so think about how uncomfortable that was after a c- section. Now it's time to take a shower, shower head was hanging off the wall And I mean literally hanging like snapped in to. Water from the shower head was going everywhere. But this what topped the cake they rolled my daughter in as she was laying there I looked at her wristband My daughter had another baby name on her wristband I was floored!!!. How do you mixed up a wristband with the wrong child make it make sense. I've worked in the health care field for many years and this is definitely a NO!!! NO!!!!. Cahaba Location Denied Care to my 8 month old son after 4 months of them rescheduling times etc. Office staff unprofessional especially the office manager Carsyn T. I quote she said, "That's not my kid so...." We moved to the area I made an appointment in September. First appointment was December they moved the time unable to make it. Snowed on our next so rescheduled was time was moved once again. Today 2/14 was our appointment at 10:30 we were stopped by a train I called to notify the office we would be a few behind they said no problem. I arrived unloaded stroller, my son and diaper bag purse etc. I sign in at 10:40 and they argued with me and told me he would not be seen. I explained I called and told it was okay, we were new patients and had waited 4 months to be seen. He's is 8 months old and needed to be seen prior but I had been patient. Manager (Carsyn) came out and continued to speak at me. I have never dealt with more unruly staff especially at the expense of a child's health. read more
