Sadly, when I was able to visit last week, I found a graveyard in disrepair with headstones in strange positions. When I parked, with an eye to walking the vicinity, I noted that several tombstones were facing one another, and I have to admit I have never seen that, despite visiting many cemeteries through the years. Some of the stones appeared to have been lined up in the past, but the ground must have shifted because they weren't in a straight line anymore. I really wanted to like this location and write a complimentary review, but I was so very disappointed.

We inquired shortly after the first of the year and were told there was a problem with the vendor. As of today there is STILL no engraving. David made everything easy for us, so much so that one is tempted to look forward to one's own services at Sunset. Sunset far outshines Iguchi's, a little funeral parlor in nearby Homer, Illinois. Fortunately, Iguchi's closed. They were plagued with poltergeists and zombies, which one finds unprofessional and which further makes it difficult for one to pay one's last respects. We just buried my mother and Renner-Wikoff wouldn't give me the time of day or allow any…read moreinput from me since my brother was the executor of the estate and signed the contract to pay the bill (which comes out of the estate not his pocket). Even though (when I complained about how I was treated) the owner told me they listened to every family member not just the bill payer that was NOT the case. I was flat out told they didn't need to listen to me because I had not signed the contract - not once was I asked for input into the service or arrangements. I had no role as the daughter and it didn't have to be that way. So, if you have family members that cannot cooperate do not use Renner-Wikoff because they are unwilling to negotiate for compromise. My opinion is they are in it for the money and will not rock the boat - at your expense (no pun intended).

My mother and I weren't really prepared when my father passed away suddenly. I did a quick Google of crematory services near Champaign, saw one we recognized and asked for my father's body be taken there. After having a few hours to think about it, the next morning we called Blair to ask if we could have a Celebration of Life service there. We didn't want a formal funeral, (no visitation, no ashes need even be present) but something short and sweet just so that people could stop by and hug us if they wanted to. My father (and mother) grew up in Mahomet and my father was friends with the Blair family. He had played in the Blair house frequently as a child and many of his friends and extended family are still in that area. It seemed like the perfect idea and something he would have been pleased with. Blair Funeral Home is now owned by Owens. I didn't have anything against Owens until the morning my mother called to ask about our event. I couldn't hear the woman my mother was talking to, but I could hear my mother's side of the conversation. My mom was much calmer and collected than anyone could expect a woman to be less than 24 hours after losing her husband of 45 years. My mom ended up crying---because she was so angry---and telling the woman on the other end we wouldn't be needing her services. I called Owens-Blair back immediately. I wasn't as pleasant with the bristly woman on the other end. She seemed extraordinarily put out that they hadn't been called first to handle the cremation and kept insisting my mother had been overwrought and was refusing to understand what she was saying. She also seemed to be under the impression my mother was upset about the price of the room rental. I'm not proud to say I became VERY angry. I had been standing right beside my mother and this was patently untrue and price was never going to be an issue. Needless to say, we had a very nice service ELSEWHERE.
