I came to granite bay on a recommendation from a friend while away from home. I am a 15 year practitioner. I walked in and asked about trying a class I didn't say my rank or how long I had been training. Ryan the owner was so gracious and welcoming. All of the students were friendly and welcoming as well. I found the place very misleading. Injuries started almost immediately. Teachings were not consistent. It's pretty annoying that there always seems to be a pole in the way of rolling. I haven't seen other gyms set up like that. Jujutsu is pretty great, but they don't get credit for that. They only get credit for how they run their business and it needs improvement greatly. They're not open to suggestions, they don't care when you're injured. I used to have great workouts at the gym. After jujutsu and the injuries all my joints hurt and my workouts are nothing like they used to be. Things they don't tell you about jujutsu. The injury rate is 100%. They don't know how to teach without injury is one of their big problems. Beware and good luck if you decide to spend your time and money here. read more

I began training at Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 14, a freshman in high school. I originally began training because of aspirations to join the U.S. Army as part of their 75th Ranger Regiment, and, frankly, didn't want to die. So I figured I had better get up to speed in hand to hand combat, knowing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the single most effective martial art. What I didn't realize at the time was how out of touch with reality I was. My first day in class, I was the shiest I had ever been and didn't even look anyone in the eye. This wasn't abnormal of my demeanor at the time. Since then, I have received more compliments than I can count on my ability to shake hands, look someone in the eye, and have an intelligent conversation with an adult. A few weeks ago, I surprised myself. There was a parent sitting in the bleachers who was introducing his sons to Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu, both around the same age I was when I had started. Without thinking, I was on my way to shake hands with him, introducing myself, and asking what brought him in. Looking back on that interaction, I realized it would've been the last thing I wanted to do when I was 14. I initially joined Granite Bay Jiu-Jitsu to learn the art of BJJ, of which you will find unrivaled instruction in the entire Greater Sacramento area, and defend myself had the need ever arise. 1 year in and I realized it was the first thing I had ever committed to for that long. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is what drew me in, but the community is why I stayed. Now, 4 years in, I can't imagine my life without jiu-jitsu. When I type jiu-jitsu, I don't only mean the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but the community I found by being here. I was asked "why Granite Bay Jujitsu"? We went to meet with a hand full of places in our area that offered Jujitsu lessons. In our opinion some didn't speak to us as the parents of a child that truly only wanted the best for her and understand or even care about the reason why, seeming like they just jumped to the cost of lessons. Others didn't offer the hours we needed, being both working parents. One seemed to be very robotic, talking super fast as though she didn't have time for us. Last we called Granite Bay Jujitsu speaking to Ken who seemed to understand, answering all of our questions with ease, not even bringing up any cost of lessons, stating he and the owner Ryan would first like for us to try them out for a week just to see if it would even be a good fit for us and our daughter. That immediately made us feel welcomed with open arms. What now keeps us here? Ryan, owner & head coach, and how him & his coaches teach the kids. They talk to them, not at them. They seem to realize and understand that each child has their own strengths, some different than others. That they aren't robots that all learn at the same pace. All while insisting on respect for the coaches, the sport, each other, & most of all them selves. Which all helps to build self-esteem. Ryan seems to love teaching Jujitsu, while also helping the other coaches, students, (of all ages) and in a lot of cases parents of those students to feel like a big family. His calm, spiked with just enough silliness, helps kids develop discipline, persistence and grit in a way that has them loving the fun of challenge. The Art of Roughhousing book recommended in the handbook is an excellent read and working in schools myself - I recommend it and BJJ all the time now. The best BJJ academy in the greater Sacramento area... hands down. Ryan Rich has been my instructor for several years and has coached my oldest son (6 years old) for several years. My middle son (4 years old) has just recently started to train under Ryan and views him as a second father. Ryan has been instrumental is building confidence in my sons and has cured the bullying of my eldest son. Three years ago (when my eldest was only 3!) we encountered sever bullying from older kids at his daycare. After several unsuccessful meetings with his teacher, he started to accompany me to BJJ class with Ryan. After 2 weeks, my son stood up for himself and the bullying ceased. Bullying has not been an issue since and his confidence level is great. Ryan has coached me thru tournaments and his technical instruction is without equal. As a purple belt, I have trained at most other academies in town and, while there are several outstanding instructors out there, Ryan is the best. Aside from all this, Ryan is punctual, professional and the facility is extremely clean (no ring worm or rashes). Although this is a newer academy, there are several other high-level black belts (Canyon, Jarrett and Josh) that will go out of their way to help students improve. Go train!! read more

A fantastic place to improve your grappling game. Ryan gives such great insight; he is a tactitian. Personally, my first class with him added a submission and transition that I hadn't seen before and continues to be effective so many years later. Wonderful place for kids to exercise and have fun! Our 6 year old is very shy. With coach Ryan he has learned to come out of his shell. He laughs and smiles every class and has even volunteered himself for demonstrations. The kids learn sportsmanship and discipline along with BJJ skills. This little Tucktaway Jiu-Jitsu studio is truly a hidden Gem!! Our 11yr old daughter is an only child, unbelievably kind with a huge heart, BUT also very shy! Doesn't like to ask questions even when she's lost as to what's happening. My husband & I decided to find some kind of martial arts class to put her in. Hoping it would not only teach her to defend herself if God forbid it should ever be needed. But to also hopefully help her to bust out of her shyness, and become way more confident in herself in every way. Neither one of us know much about any kind of martial arts other than the very brief karate lessons I took as a child. I looked on Yelp for Jiu-Jitsu studios, after a co-worker recommended that type possibly being good for Ashlyn. We had driven from one to another all weekend. A few of them we called before just stopping by, this being one of those. The gentleman that answered, Ken, said they don't take walk-in visits, only by appointment. They offered her to go the following Mon-Thurs for free just to see how she would like it, which was wonderful. With her being so shy and looking like she was a fish out of water not knowing the language being used or any of the moves of course, we thought for sure she would run and not look back! BUT we both were so excited to hear her say ON THE 1st NIGHT that she loved it and couldn't wait to sign up! Ken, who was the initial person we spoke with on the phone was incredibly kind, welcoming, funny, and extremely helpful with lots of information. He responds extremely fast to any ?'s we've had. She got to also experience a couple different coaches that 1st week also with the owner and main coach being out for the week, which was awesome. The coaches were all great at what they do and with so many different ages of children! It was like a family, with all the kids in class also being very welcoming to Ashlyn by each of them introducing themselves to her just after class started that 1st night. So now we are going to be signing her up to start with for a 3month program starting next Monday. Stopped in about a month ago right after work for their 6:30pm class. Their classes are great for all levels. The instructor demonstrated each technique with high detail, we then drilled the move over and again as the instructor walked around to make sure each group was performing the technique accurately. We then proceeded to live training and all of the students are very technical and respectful to their training partners. Highly recommend! read more
