It's not easy to see from the street that there's a cheerful, clean cafe inside of the River of Life church. I'm really glad there were big yellow flags out front that said "espresso." I was out for a hike in East Missoula and I didn't want to head back into town (Missoula that is) to get coffee, so I decided to give Riverside a shot. Now it's one of my favorites! Delicious black coffee company beans, non-flavored soy (a rarity here), and lots of snacks to buy. I am a shameless Seattle coffee snob, and I am telling you, if you are in East Missoula, whether you live there or are passing through on your way to other Montana adventures, you need to stop here.

It was an EXPERIENCE! The perfect amount of crunchy on the outside but the inside is flaky and just the smallest hint of sweet. Hands down the BEST croissant I've ever had. Side story- they close at 1pm on Saturday, I was working on my computer and lost track of time. Even thought they were closed they didn't kick any of us out OR ask us to leave. They just locked the door so no more people came in. No dirty looks, nothing. They just let the people still inside enjoy their drinks and food. I thought that was incredibly sweet. The food was always just ok and never spectacular. The staff has always been kind and attentive. It's sad that his poor choices and big ego is causing so much hardship. I've been going here since they were baking out of Black Coffee and I couldn't be more thrilled that they have their own place. The bread is absolutely top notch. Not many places do the European-style rye breads in the USA and Grist is knocking them out of the park. If you like that kind of thing, the pumpernickel is fantastic. The Miller's Grain is a fantastic sourdough loaf, as are all of the specialty varieties. I love that all of the grains are from Montana. You can taste how fresh the flour is, and I'm sure it's also more nutrient dense. I also appreciate the seasonality of their pastries. In the spring you'll find asparagus pastries, and pear in the fall. It is always a fun surprise to see what is new. I haven't had one of their sandwiches, but they look 10/10.
