Free! This museum is right next to the mound. It had lots of information about the mound, arena people, local businesses and other historical items. Everything is free and my kids enjoyed it. After walking thru the museum you can then take a walk up the mound.

We are visiting Moundsville for a wedding, and I'm so happy that I stopped here. The center is beautiful, very informative and has tons of cool archaeological finds. The mound itself is such an awesome sight, so much history here! Like other reviews mentioned, the view from the top is beautiful and is directly across from the penitentiary, which is another thing that attracts visitors here. I will say the climb was steep, and there are no rails. Use caution, but the mound is a little difficult to climb if you're someone that has a difficult time walking. P.S. the entire center is free! Which is so awesome. There is a gift shop on the way out that has local candles, soap, and tons of crystals. All of which are very affordable. If you're in Moundsville, it's a must see! Only took about an hour or so to walk through start to finish.

I can't believe this was a free tour. It was interesting and intriguing. Learned a lot about local history, marble and more. The mound alone is worth the visit. You don't get to see things like it too often.

We visited the Grave Creek Indian Mound, and as before we enjoyed our visit immensely. The museum is FREE to enjoy and there is a very nice gift store to purchase a souvenir. There is a large section about the local marble history. There is also dinosaur bones and other artifacts from the mound. If in the area you should visit this free museum and enjoy!!!!

The view from the top of the mound was stunning and you could see all of Moundsville. The museum and gift shop were great and filled with items from the area. I really enjoyed my visit.

A very interesting historical sight! This giant burial mound is well over 2000 years old according to carbon dating. It contains tombs of ancient people from the area, and beads and artifacts we discovered within in the 1970's. The view from the top is great and the museum is quite informative.

Steps to the top.

Although the museum and gift shop were closed, it's still quite an impressive feature of Moundsville.

Anything you could imagine that kids would love is here - dress up, grocery store, climbing wall, play house, animals, building blocks of all shapes and sizes. Even a music area and a craft table.

I would not call this place a museum in the same sense as the Pittsburgh Children's Museum. I believe the name is misleading and it should be called a play space. As a play space this place would get 4 stars but as a museum it would get one star. I averaged that and gave it 3 stars for affordability. The place is basically one big room but it has some walls to divide the space up a little. They have animal alley with a tarantula, fish, lizard, turtle, and a snake. They have a climbing wall, craft area, chalkboard, train table, and a sand table. One of the cooler stations is the lego station as they have a good collection of lego parts. They also have a station with an Ipad attached where one can video tape their actions and replay them. They have the bigger lego blocks in some small bins. They have the blue imagination blocks for constructing as well. My kids the loved the dress-up outcove the most as they have a kitchen and numerous outfits to put on. They have a small house type structure to climb steps. My 3 year old walked up it and was disappointed to not see a slide. All in all this place is a decent place to play on rainy or cold days. It is open enough to let the kids run around while one relaxes a little. Bring your own food and drink. There is a hot dog stand across the street and a restaurant on the corner. If you are traveling and need a place for kids to run around and be engaged then this place is better than the playspace at Burger King in St. Clairesville.

Our tour was led by the head pf the department. The breadth of her knowledge of the museum, her predecessors, and collection was impressive. Did you know that England has a copy of our T Rex in their Natural History museum? Dippy's extra bones need a new resting place. Currently they have been resting on this shelf since 1800's. The wood is injuring the bottom of the fossil. (I think dinosaur lovers would donate the $30k to get Dippy's bones a new resting place.) Researchers come to study the collection. Fork lifts are used to transfer the bones from one surface to the next.
