Feeling very guilty about my lack of familiarity with the Irish countryside, and being in…read morepossession of a gift certificate to a tour website, I had booked a day trip to Newgrange and Monasterboice that was through Irish City Tours / Gray Line Dublin. We got to the tourism office at some ungodly hour (9am, possibly) and were told by a stone-faced, bottle blond that the tour was cancelled "because of the volcano". I asked why we weren't notified in advance of the cancellation, and she told me they only decided to cancel it the day before. Why didn't you call me the day before, then? I asked. She said because their offices were closed. Uh, what? There was no apology and no pretense of customer service. The only thing more embarrassing than booking a tour like this is getting shot down at the Tourism Centre when you should be in bed.

Our guides were all wonderful--very knowledgeable and friendly. It was great to pay for everything…read moreupfront and not having to worry about securing tickets to the attractions. We also appreciated not having to drive ourselves everywhere; it made the trip so much easier! The downside to not driving ourselves was being on someone else's schedule. We really could've used another hour in Kilkenny; if we could change anything, we would skip the walking tour to have more time in Kilkenny Castle and exploring more of the city. Also, the WiFi on the buses barely, if ever, worked. That's not a huge deal, except we were really trying to rely on WiFi and not paying extra for our cellular network while we were abroad.

The cliffs were very very busy so not enough time to do it all and eat and go to the toilet. We walked half and opted to eat. The bathroom lines are very long, no fault of the tour. Our guide and driver were professional and mostly kind. We learned a lot about Irish history from Aaron and felt safe being driven by Stipe. I would have liked to know more about some of the specific things/places we saw as we saw them while driving in the country (I.e. ruins, stone walls, interesting mountains, the beaches, or the little walls) but in return learned so much about Ireland and its rich history.
