A chocolate tour in Boston? Upon first glance, one would think that a novelty such as a walking chocolate tour would the ultimate in niche Boston tours. Turns out Boston had a serious sweet tooth! Great food tours chocolate tasting tour is a great way to get in some sweet treats while walking around Bostons historic Back Bay and leaning a little about chocolate along the way. The tour takes you to five different confectionary locations within a mile radius. At each one you will find a different treat. Truffles, cookies, and cupcakes; Each with its own history and unique relation to this city. Our tour guide Kira or "Shakira without the Sha" was #blessed with fun facts and trivia about chocolate and its place in history and Boston. Being a life long Boston resident, I never thought this is a city with a serious sweet tooth. But this tour proved me wrong. We scheduled a tour with Great Food Tours a month or so in advance, twice. Both tours were cancelled on us by Great Food Tours by email within days of the scheduled tour due to low attendance. It turns out they don't run a tour unless there is at least 10 people signed on. I had to ask in order to find that out. They would have saved us all the annoyance of oft cancelled tours if only they'd upgrade their website to show the number of spots taken per available tour date and mentioned this little tidbit so that their customers could self-select to cluster themselves. Fortunately, we're locals. If we were planning a trip to Boston from out of state, this would have been a worse annoyance and inconvenience than it already was. PS - their phone number is a joke. We tried every option and everything pointed the caller back to their website and the online chat option. There's no way to get a human being. read more

Today was my second time doing tour. On the last tour with Jeff we had a small intimate group and today we had a large group with Kelsey. Jeff was great and really engaging and despite the large size Kelsey managed to pull it off as well. She was really informative about, not only, the shops but the Back Bay area as well. I should have trusted my gut and backed out months ago. Last year, I bought a Groupon for two for the Chocolate Tour after reading pages of glowing reviews. Unfortunately, the Best Tours website is terribly designed and it was nearly impossible to contact them (their phone number didn't work and they didn't reply to e-mails). Nevertheless, I had already bought the Groupon, so I decided to sign up for the soonest available tour...which was in 5 months! Surely such a popular and well-reviewed service couldn't be the scam that I had feared it to be. Sure enough, the morning of the tour came and I received an e-mail in broken English saying that the tour had been cancelled due to a "staffing crisis." Puzzled and more than a little annoyed, I sent an e-mail to request that my tour be rescheduled. No answer ("shame on me," I guess). I next tried their online chat and actually managed to reschedule my tour to two weeks from the original date...but I had learned my lesson. The day before the newly scheduled tour, I asked (via online chat) if the tour was still scheduled to run. You guessed it: another "staffing crisis." Save your money, save your time, and save your stress for something more worthwhile. Could not recommend less! read more

This 5 star review is specifically for Kelsey, not for the company as a whole. Did the chocolate tour with Kelsey this past weekend, and she was great. I was impressed that she called all the shops ahead of time to make sure they were ready for us, and even called some of our tour group members who were running late (due to marathon weekend craziness in downtown) to see if they were coming or not, and let them know where to meet us. That is exactly what I would have done, and is great customer service that I certainly notice/appreciate! Unfortunately, a month before our positive experience with Kelsey, we had a bad experience with Great Food Tours. Had booked another tour, and the guide never showed up. Our group (12 people, all there on time) waited 45 minutes before finally giving up and attempting to turn it into a self-guided tour, to salvage the day. None of us were able to successfully get in contact with Great Food Tours, until one of the chocolate shop owners called them on a direct phone # to find out what was going on. There was a lot of back-and-forth with the company; it was a bit of a nightmare. Kelsey gets 5 stars. Great Food Tours gets 2-3 overall (the 1 star rating I would have given them was partially made up for by the experience with Kelsey). read more

I brought a groupon for this company. If you are considering purchasing one, be forewarned that they book 2-3 weeks out for the chocolate tour and 2 weeks out for the cupcake tour. Then, the day before, they may cancel the tour via email. That's what's happening to me. I blocked my weekend twice so far to take this tour. No deal. Essentially, they could sell lots of groupons and cancel on you so you are left with the expired face value instead of the promotional value. I just booked another time slot for the chocolate tour (first availability is Dec 14). : : So my twice rebooked Dec 14 tour was canceled once again. The problem was I already traveled an hour to Boston. I checked with the tour company and they said, "Oh, that tour is canceled today. You could rebook though." They never notified me the tour was canceled. Here's the worst part ... I know the area so I figured after a nice lunch, I would take my daughter to one of the chocolate store on the tour itinerary. We arrived at the last stop on Newbury Street. While browsing the display, lo and behold, the Chocolate Tour walked in! But they told me the tour was canceled! Now, I know the Great Food Tour company canceled on Groupon members once they have enough people paying full retail price. It's a horrible practice. I'm reporting them to Groupon tomorrow and demanding my refund. read more

I had a date for the chocolate tour on Sept, 26, 2014. Well, they phoned me the night before to tell me they had to reschedule it. They said they didn't have enough people for the tour that date, but since they had 12 for the following Friday, Oct. 3rd, they were booking me in for that date. Well I had to then reschedule 2 appt's I had for Oct. 3rd, 1 at my dentist & the other with my spine dr. So as inconvenient as that was, I took care of it anyway. Then lo & behold, what happens? The tour calls me up again the day before & tells me they have to cancel the tour. They said it was due to a lack of people attending. So when I asked them about the 12 people I was told about the week before, they answered me with a "They must have canceled". At that point I told them I was going to ask for a refund. I did contact the coupon website I paid to book this tour, told them my story & almost instantly was credited my money back. So what could anyone expect me to say about this company other than they suck? read more

I had no idea there was so much good chocolate in Back Bay - I will definitely be back to some of the stops on the tour. It was nice trying different forms of chocolate (cupcake, cookie, candy) in addition to traditional forms. Don't eat too much beforehand! A lot of people took samples home at the end because they were too full (I still couldn't eat it all though I started on a pretty empty stomach). 8 of us, sisters and their daughters (no kids), took the tour the Sunday before Christmas through Groupon. There was a chill in the air and the shops were decorated for the holidays. Kelsey, our guide was very professional,friendly and informative. We had free samples, made some purchases, posted selfies and met some nice people on this tour. My step-daughter and I did the chocolate tour today with Gabrielle, and she was great! Very outgoing and friendly. She was knowledgable and informative as well, and did a great job of keeping a nice pace and checking in to make sure everyone was accounted for. We weren't crazy about two of the stops, but two others more than made up for it and was, perhaps, some of the most delicious chocolate we've ever had! It was also a great way to see downtown Boston and burn a fraction of the consumed calories! I'd definitely recommend this tour to any chocolate lovers! read more

TOTAL SCAM!! DO NOT BUY! I should have known it was too good to be true! Bought on groupon and the morning of they sent an email saying "staffing issue". Now reading the other reviews, I shouldn't have been so excited. They have NO phone number and DONT respond to emails. On their website all they have is an instant messenger which the person told me "we are no scam, we just don't have reliable employees". They keep telling me not to post online that they are a scam...welp here I am. THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME, MONEY OR ENERGY ON IT! This is actually just a joke. I truly hope no one pays actual price for these tours, because they are in NO WAY worth it. There is too much wrong with this company to be redeemable. 1) Customer service is useless. There is no phone number to call, so when our tour guide didn't show up on time, several people in the group went online to use their customer service chat. Whomever was in charge of the chat couldn't give us any information on our local tour, couldn't provide us a phone number to anyone, and once they finally established that the tour guide would be late, they couldn't tell us how late. Also, there is an address provided as a meeting location, but it's very non-specific and it causes a lot of confusion. 2) Tour guide finally showed up a half hour after scheduled time, citing that he was stuck on the orange line. My friend who was on the tour with us had also come in on the orange line and managed to get there on time, so I'm going to go ahead and just assume he lied straight to our faces. 3) Tour guide never checked tickets, so you didn't even really have to pay to join this tour, I guess. 4) The website says the tour is approximately two hours. The tour actually went for an hour, and most of that time, the tour guide was on the phone ordering food for our next stop. Also, he kept telling us that the last stop would be a coffee stop, but we ended up never getting coffee. The tour we were on was the Italian food walking tour. For the price of $50 (per their website), you get one slice of pizza from Regina's, a one-inch segment of an Italian sub from Monica's Mercado, a small cup of espresso gelato from the Gelateria, and one mini cannoli from Mike's Pastry, and you get to eat it all on very busy sidewalks. The total cost of the food we ate was maybe $15. Spare yourself the annoyance with this company and do the tour yourself. read more

DO NOT USE THIS BUSINESS! They also go by the name of "Cupcake Tour". I purchased a tour from them for Mothers Day for my wife (FROM MY KIDS). It looked like a nice idea. A day prior to the tour I received an automated email and text that the tour was cancelled due to low numbers. Then, I was unable to get in touch with them to find out how any information on a refund, or, any information. They have an online chat support system that is very unhelpful. My kids are heartbroken, and my wife would have loved this. This business is a complete sham, and I would highly recommend not using them whatsoever. read more

I had booked a tour for 4 people in October for a Dec 13 tour. I had confirmed the week of the tour to make sure we were all set, and they did confirm that we were all set for the 13th. This was suppose to be a surprise birthday gift for my mother, and a ladies day out for two of the members who had young toddlers at home. So there was a lot of planning behind getting the date confirmed and the ladies available. 3PM on December 12 (NOT even 24 hours before the tour), I get a text that the tour was cancelled due to lack of numbers. This was an excellent chocolate tour! I have been on a few chocolate tours with different companies, so I can say with confidence that this is a great value for your money. Kelsey was very welcoming and knowledgeable. She gave us just the right mix of Boston facts and chocolate trivia to keep us engaged. She also did a fantastic job of managing our very large tour group in sometimes very small locations. The samples were plentiful, varied, and delicious. My personal favorite was the chocolate cookie at Patisserie. As a local, it's always a pleasure for me to discover new places that I might not think of as a chocolate destination. We had our tour book for yesterday and it was cancelled. We bought the groupon 2 months in advance and called them on Thursday to confirm. Friday at 2:30pm we received a text saying it was cancelled due to low numbers. We had to scramble and make new plans since we were going to do this for our mothers birthday! this was a group of 4 - why couldn't they have just given us the tour instead of cancelling on us less than 24 hrs in advance? bad customer service, there is no phone number available to talk to someone either- not a good sign read more

I booked a chocolate tour several months in advance and they canceled at the last minute due to weather. That's ok, February was intense on Boston this year, so I rebooked for a few months later. Again they canceled at the last minute (the middle of night the day before the tour) but this time for no apparent reason. Trying to rebook a second time has been a nightmare as they seem to have hired a customer service team that specializes in being argumentative and unhelpful, so 12 emails later I'm still trying to reschedule. I talked to a friend who also went on this tour afterwards and she told me they didn't even give her the courtesy of a cancellation email. She and several other people showed up on time and no tour guide ever appeared. After a long wait they finally called the company and they told them the tour had been canceled due to low numbers (there were eight people there). Do not under any circumstances give these people your money unless it is to play a prank on someone you have by giving them tickets. Go to tea at the Taj instead, it's basically at the same location, it costs about the same per person, and it's a delightful experience. read more

My friends and I coordinated a day to do this, bought Groupons for the cupcake tour and signed up online. We all traveled in the winter from the suburbs into Boston (paying for the T, parking in garages, etc.) and met at the meeting place to meet the tour guide. Four other customers were waiting as well. When no tour guide showed up, we were all confused. After checking our smartphones, only ONE of the 8 of us received an email from the company cancelling the event "due to low numbers" which was sent the night before at 5:00pm. (Keeping in mind there were 8 of us, and also that THEY only allow YOU to cancel if it is THREE days prior.) Luckily, we got our money back from Groupon. We will never trust Cupcake Tours of Boston again as this situation was completely unprofessional and rude. Tell the cupcake lovers you know to stick to their local bakery! read more

Don't do it! This was sold as a living social deal for $80 for 4 people and was booked through Besttours.com. This was supposed to happen on 8/1/2015. The guide never showed up, no tour, no cupcakes. Nada! Those of us waiting for this to happen checked our email when it looked like no one from the company was going to show and the company sent out an email saying the tour needed to be cancelled for "staffing reasons." One couple waiting for the tour said this was their second time trying to do the tour and the last time the tour company cancelled they cited the same staffing concerns.
