Like many childcare centers, Heatherwood went through a period of teacher turnover and transition, and there were definitely some bumps along the way. Our daughter found some of that change difficult. But the center has undergone a significant leadership change over the past several months, and the difference has been noticeable. The environment today feels stable, thoughtful, and well led. The classrooms have strong, consistent leadership; many of the best teachers have stayed; and new teachers have been brought in who are adding to an already caring team. I've also been impressed to see the new leadership recognize strong teachers and create opportunities for them to grow and take on more responsibility. Most importantly, we see the impact in our daughter. She is having consistently calmer, happier days and has really settled into Pre-K. Her teachers know her, care about her, and have worked with her through transitions rather than expecting her simply to adjust on her own. One of the things that originally drew us to the YMCA was its culture. It is genuinely inclusive, caring, and community-minded, and we've always felt that at Heatherwood. The teachers have consistently cared about the kids, even during periods when the center itself was navigating change. After two years, we feel very good about where Heatherwood is today. The ship feels steady, the teachers feel supported, and most importantly, the kids are thriving. We're glad to be part of the community.

We switched from another daycare provider, so I have a point of comparison. My 3 year old loves going to "school," has formed positive bonds, and learns so much while there. She enjoys the field trips and varied activities. Since starting she has progressed through three age defined classroom levels and I have been pleased with the focus on development and learning at each stage. My new baby is thriving. I work at home a couple of days a week so go see her to nurse when I can. I am always welcome and greeted warmly by the teachers. My baby is always happy and clean. Since I am able to observe the teacher interactions with the babies, I feel good knowing my little one is there. Crib safety measures are always observed and I appreciate that there aren't a lot of "gadgets" such as bouncers/swings/exersaucers that invite using those items to occupy a child. Instead the babies receive a lot of time on mats and with interactive sensory toys. The teachers are exceptionally caring. While other child care facilities may offer more aesthetic bells and whistles, I feel confident that my children are safe, happy, and learning while I am at work. My entire family enjoys the optional family nights and opportunities for parent engagement. I highly recommend Heatherwood to anyone seeking child care.

We picked it because of good reviews on Google and recommendation from a friend. But it turned out to be a totally different experience. It seems those reviews were written back when Shakti, the owner was really focused on giving good care. Now, it seems like she is more into expanding the business. She opened a second branch for kids aged 18 months and older and our daughter was enrolled for that. When we met Shakti, she talked a lot about herself and her experience but didn't say much about how she takes care of kids. We still decided to go with her daycare. Our daughter had never been to daycare before, and we made it clear to Shakti that it might not be easy transition. She was super confident and assured us that she'd take care of the new daycare while her staff will handle the existing one. Things were okay for the first week with two teachers (not Shakti) and a few kids in the new daycare. But we noticed Shakti wasn't giving her full attention to the new daycare. We were fine with that because our daughter was getting comfortable with the teachers, and they were doing a good job sharing details with us on her day. The strange part was that when Shakti was there during pickup, the other teacher wouldn't interact with parents, which made us think Shakti had told them not to. Shakti never really told about the day activities or curriculum even when asked about or how we could make our daughter's transition smoother. Instead, she often asked us to pick her up early, saying she needed more attention and she or other teachers are exhausted. I should also mention Shakti's approach to handling kids. She told us about some instances where she was strict with kids, and the other teachers were so soft hearted. For example, she shared she put our daughter into a high chair, and another teacher had to intervene when our daughter continued crying. Our daughter ended up being scared of her. Shakti used to share with us that our daughter is getting comfortable day by day and drop off and pick ups were smooth as well. But when we asked Shakti to be gentler with our daughter because our daughter's behavior was changing at home, things took a turn for the worse, Shakti shared with us that she is getting more kids in the new day care and if our daughter is not getting fully comfortable in few more days we need to look for another day care and when we reminded her of her confidence and to give more attention to new daycare, she started isolating our daughter, not letting her near the teacher she was comfortable with, or play with the other kids. Even when we asked her not to use the high chair, she ignored our request. One day, when we showed up unannounced, we found Shakti chatting with a relative (who was not a day care staff) while our daughter was isolated and crying in one corner, and the teacher she liked was in another room with the other kids. That was the moment we decided not to send our daughter there anymore. We recommend that parents pay attention to how their kids react when they come back from this daycare, whether they seem happy or upset, instead of focusing on how Shakti acts during pickup. It seems like she's only nice to the kids when the parents are around. For new parents considering this daycare, we suggest you look for someone who genuinely loves kids and can provide a better experience for your little ones. If you still decide to go for it never push Shakti for your requests or ask her questions.

Seems a little like discrimination to me... children need a place that they can feel safe in. not sure i would enroll based on the fact that the person giving the tour did not take the time to get some information about us or trey to build that connection with us. Must not want that enrollment that bad.

My son loved her! -Ms. Alaina was great (she has left) -polite and friendly staff Cons: -lack of active supervision= safety concerns. We walked in on another child, ~2 months older, crawling on my then immobile son, who was trapped in a boppy while teachers reorganized cubbies on the other side of the room. On his last day, a child walked up and took all the toys (~5) he was playing with. Then another child (same child as first incident) crawled on top of him, sat on his waist/upper thighs and repeatedly hit his belly ~6 times. An adult was sitting less than 5 feet away and did not intervene, presumably because she did not see it. The child crawled away independently, and I picked my son up early. He did not have any marks on him, or I would have brought it to administration's attention. -communication: I made the mistake of thinking a parent app with opportunities to input meals/diaper changes, message and share pictures/video meant that we would have positive, strong communication. Responses are usually delayed, if received at all, parent requests are not necessarily honored, etc. As a former teacher, I tried to be up front about things going on at home (ie job changes, returning to work, sleep changes/training, etc.), but was met with judgement and push back which I found disappointing and off-putting. I'm paying for daycare, not parenting advice. Daily reports had some inaccuries as to number of feedings (i.e., report says ate 4 times but only sent 5 bottles and 2 sent back unused) and type of milk given (i.e., said my exclusively breastfed baby was given formula then after switching to formula said given breastmilk); however, staff assured me these were reporting errors only and he received only the bottles we sent. -school-like, rigid environment: no drop offs after 10 AM, progress reports though no staff training/education, etc. My baby isn't developmentally ready for school; he's 7 months old. If he needs to take his first nap at home and come in late, he should be able to. Also, I work from home, if I have meetings and cannot drop off until later in the morning, I shouldn't have to ask for permission to bring him late. I pay for the day, whether he comes in or not, so I should be able to bring him in when it's best for us. -This is a business and it feels like it. They nickel and dime you everywhere, you have to provide your own gloves for diaper changes for goodness sakes! -Staff are asked to do too much. My son started daycare at 10 weeks old. We don't have family in the area, so daycare was the first time our son was consistently separated from us, and it obviously caused him some distress. We would pick him up, his eyes/face would be red, puffy, and splotchy. He refused to sleep much and started losing weight from not eating enough. Nearly every time we logged onto the cameras, he was alone in a dark corner on the opposite side of the room from the adults or other children. I thought it would get better, but it went on for ~2 months. Eventually, he started throwing major fits any time we put him in his carseat, and he's usually a very happy baby. This month, a new baby started in his class. Almost every time, except 1-2 times, I walked in, this baby's screaming. He's ~3-4 months, and almost never was he held or picked up unless I commented on how sad he was or talked to him. One time, I stopped to pick up something my husband forgot, and the teacher couldn't hear me knocking in the door over the baby crying, so I walked in. The baby was in the bouncer, next to the counter (he was out of the camera's view), while the teacher did something on the counter with her back to the baby. Upon hearing the door's bell and seeing me, the teacher whipped around and started talking to the baby and bouncing the bouncer. I now know that they left my son to cry alone for God knows how long but would pick him up before we got there which is why his face was always swollen n puffy but he wasn't actually crying. In some ways, I'm unbelievably angry with the staff for treating babies this way. On the other hand, I know they are short-staffed and asked to do way too much. I would have preferred not to receive a "progress report" or fewer cutesy crafts and had my son's emotional needs met. We are now at an in-home daycare where my son is very well cared for. He sleeps 2 hours consecutively (the longest he ever slept at Kids n Us was 40 minutes), he eats all his purees/solids and drinks 12-20 oz (was picking at purees, drank less than 10 oz consistently at Kids n Us). I've heard great things about Kids n Us and really wanted to have a positive experience. Unfortunately, our experience was being charged a premium price for mediocre care.

Later, we decided to visit the infant daycare room and meet the teachers before our baby started. Thank goodness we did. Every single child in the room was sick with very runny noses and coughs. When we asked what the limitations were for sick children the teachers said that they only turn children away if they have fever, are vomiting or have diarrhea. They flat out told us that we would just have to understand that there were always sick kids in the class and that our child would be getting sick. At one point, one of the more sick children spit up a good amount on the rug where all the kids were playing. The teacher barely wiped it up with a paper towel and spray allowing the other kids to play right where it was. They never wiped the spit up off the child's mouth. He put a rattle in his mouth getting spit up all over it when another child grabbed it and put it in their mouth. There was no real attempt at sanitation to avoid the spread of germs. Also the children were pretty fussy and the teachers did not seem at all confident or comfortable handling it. They seemed very overwhelmed and even frustrated. This was with only 6 children and they take up to 8 in that room. After that visit, there was no way we could imagine
