From them we got an 8-week-old puppy and did not know he was a full-blooded pit bull. Best mistake we ever made. I can only speak to my personal experience... my happy, sweet lion passed away ~3 years ago. I recently moved back and decided I wanted to find another friend. I initially made an appointment for one specific cat, however, I found I was actually super allergic to him when I met him. There was another cat I was interested in but unfortunately he was super super scared because he just arrived and would not be a good friend to take home yet. Because I am very allergic to certain cat breeds, the staff said I could just hang around the open cat play area and see how I reacted with each cat. I really needed a friend, and I was certain that I could give one of these cats a wonderful new home. Finally, I came across a cat ("Brittany") who I wasn't sure would be the correct fur type, but sounded like she would be a good fit for me. Really, it was the description they had written for her. When I met her, only one person had really been able to handle her (Serena I think) because brittany was so scared of everyone. The staff were very nice, letting me come back everyday to see if I would be allergic to brittany. After a week, I could tell I wouldn't be allergic and the staff even gave me some food, treats they had been giving her, and sold me a carrier at a significant discount (I think because brittany had been at the shelter for so long). I'm so thankful for the care the staff gave to kitkat (my name for her ) and accommodation they gave to me. Because if the accurate description, I knew this little girl would need a lot of time to get comfortable and used to people again. And she has truly blossomed and is the sweetest, cutest thing. I still stand by my original review. While the wait times may be long and things can get crazy, I've always felt like I've been treated nicely and been able to find really loving new family members. read more

this place is a joke. adopted a beautiful pup, within a week he had a BRAIN INFECTION and no one noticed? though he had just been neutered/other check ups. just had this poor baby laying out in the open a week after getting him, we had to put him down due to this place and another vet being absolutely useless and giving us no answers. oh and when i told them what happened, they wanted to hand off ANOTHER DOG for free due to their mistake. cool? but not really because i'm already heartbroken after losing this sweet boy i had barely any time with. read more

On National Puppy Day 2016, I decided that I would get...you guessed it-a puppy! I knew exactly where I wanted my new furry friend from, the GBHS. I visited GBHS in December after dropping off some donations for the pets. I was very impressed with the clean, friendly environment and helpful staff. Being the animal lover I am, I didn't want to leave! Before this recent visit, I checked out their website to see photos of the dogs available for adoption. I initially saw a lab/Shepard mix puppy I was interested in, but decided I wanted a smaller dog. After visiting another pet supplier website that linked to the GBHS' pool of adoptable pets, I saw Trixie, a year old chihuahua mix. I knew I had to meet her. After we were placed in a room for the meet and greet session, the handler gave me background information on Trixie, we bonded, and I confirmed what I already knew the moment I saw her photo-that she was just for me! The adoption process was very smooth and professional. For National Puppy Day/Easter, they were running a special where all adult dogs were $35. I was given the bed she was sleeping in, and a new bag of food. There's even a little store inside where you can purchase toys, crates, food bowls and leashes for your new pet. I bought everything I needed for my sweet doggy before I left the premises. I am very happy with my new friend and she's happy with her new home too. If you are looking for a wonderful furry friend, give the GBHS a try. You will leave with not only a wonderful friend, but a knowing that you gave him or her a new "leash" on life! read more

I was able to spend 10mins with him just to play around and get to know each other a little. That night all I could do was think about him and wonder what he was doing. Sunday I was bored and decided to go back to see what he was doing. He was outside with the other dog but as soon as he saw me he came and jumped up on the door. I have only been to this location once, but have been thoroughly impressed. We went on the craziest day of the year. But the staff handled the mobs of people like champs. We have been wanting a pup for a while now. So when we saw they were doing a special for a "no-euthanasia" campaign, we knew the time was right. We showed up a little after it started. By that time, we had 68 people in front of us. They were very intentional in making sure that in all of the chaos, that the animals were still being put in as good of a situation as possible. It is obvious that is an impossible task with hundreds of people coming through. But they did everything to make sure it wasn't a pick out a pet and leave type of deal. The facility was well set up to see the animals without interacting. So you can't "mass shop" by constant interaction with any one you wanted. You could only choose three animals to see for the entire day. You had to bring the ENTIRE family the pet would be living with... including other pets. They had an individual employee talk with everyone thinking of adopting. We picked our three; and by the time they called our number, two of ours were gone. But we still agreed to see who they named Bravery. She truly is a brave little one. Three and half months old and found wandering the streets of downtown Birmingham by herself. She was so loving and adorable, we didn't need to see any other puppies. She had developed what they called "kennel cough". They wanted the vet to see her before we took her home. We were given all of the medicine she needed and even provided her first bag of food. We had to read through all of their stipulations and sign an agreement. They were constantly educating through the whole process. And we still have to take her for a vet check-up within 5 business days. She had a giant Christmas bear they gave her that she attached to after being rescued and being spayed. And when they realized she was being adopted, they made sure that bear left with her. We got the phone call later in the day that the vet cleared our newest family member and we could pick her up the next day. But we wanted her immediately. So we went up there at about 8:00 (9 hours into their day), and they were still going strong. The crowd was thinner, but still chaos. And the staff was giving it 100%. We were still given instructions the whole time. So after all the paper work and explanation, we were given our beautiful new puppy. We named her Sugar, but calling her Shug after the late, great coach. Overall the staff is friendly, knowledgable, and caring. Even on a day when they may have to give more than their all. The facility was clean and organized. We are very pleased with everything. read more

5 stars just because our recently adopted healthy kitten from the Greater Birmingham Humane Society has poured liters of pure happy into our hearts. Sparkling, spacious facility with helpful and patient staff. It's $50 to adopt a kitten which is a steal since most shelters charge $100+ to adopt wee cats. I have to admit that I wasn't too wild about the You Can Only Meet 3 Pets a Day policy since I don't live close by and have to schlep down Lakeshore, but oh well. I know it's a rule that has reasoning behind it. The whole process is reminiscent of a doctor's office and waiting room since in order to interact with the animals, you fill out a form and then sit in a private room until the pet arrives. But the staff lets you spend as much time as you want getting to know the furballs, and they don't try to rush you into making quick decisions. After all, you're going to be spending years and years with you new family member. There's also a pet supply store on the premises, and the GBHS also has non-canine/feline pets. There were rabbits, birds, and guinea pigs when I was there. Adopt! read more

GBHS is not handling the COVID-19 response well. They put all of the adoptables in foster homes and forgot about them. They just tried to adopt a dog to me without telling me or the foster parent that he is Heartworm positive and couldn't tell me how I could acquire the treatment from them. He's still intact and they can't even say when they would be able to neuter him. I think they forgot about why their organization even exists. read more

Tried to adopt dog, but they sent it away to another shelter. We waited over an hour to meet the puppy (never got to) and when I went to look at his room, it said "adopted." I talked to staff and they he wasn't adopted and because he isn't popular they are sending him to another location and we can't meet him. I said but I want to adopt now and they said too bad he is being sent away. Doesn't make sense; I could have provided a forever home but the staff didn't catch their mistake and sent him to another temporary shelter. I was interested in adopting a pet, only to find out he was in a foster home. The foster contacted me with a ton of questions as to which I answered. Even told her where my previous pets records were located and let her know I was a vet tech for 12 years. Never heard anything back from her yay or nay. The GBHS is one of the better humane societies that I've seen. I have both adopted from them and volunteered there for a while. The volunteers go through some training to make sure they understand how to handle the animals and have more in depth classes based on their interest. I'm more interested in cats, so that's the area I chose. They are very clean and safe and have plenty of rules for the volunteers so that all of the animals have the best care. My favorite part was playing with the kittens! My dad and I adopted a dog from there back when they were at their other location - Lomb Ave, I think it was. Then I adopted a cat about four years ago. The screening process seems to be pretty careful and takes into consideration the temperament of the animal and the environment that it will be going into. Of course they aren't perfect, but in the world of humane societies, they are definitely toward the top. Go visit them! Even if you aren't looking to adopt, it's a very nice, airy facility and you can play with some of the animals. read more

GBHS is worthless. If you find strays or abandoned animals, just pick them up yourself and take them to St Clair or some place else. I called over ten times in the past two months about two dogs running loose in my neighborhood and on a few of those calls I was even told that they don't service my area (when in fact they do, considering their Snow Dr. Number is on my city's phone listing for animal control). Twice I was told that someone would be out to pick them up (once was yesterday) and obviously, no one showed up. The BCC needs to look into the funding to this S-show of an origination and stop funding them. They can't even do the simple things right which makes me feel bad for the animals at their shelters. read more

GBHS runs a pretty good operation. Everything is kept clean. The staff is friendly. Their website helps show what pets are available for adoption. They have nice waiting rooms that, if you decide to adopt, allow you to meet your chosen pet and see if you click/match. They do ask you to bring any pets you currently have, if you choose adopt, that way they can make sure they get along before taking them home. I called and the volunteer told me the dog would had to be "watched" for 48 hours to make sure it was adoption material. Looked on website next day & dog was gone. DISAPPOINTED! GBHS is a great organization with a very nice facility in West Homewood. The dogs are kept in open kennels with plenty of space and are taken outside for frequent walks and play time. You can search the animals they have available for adoption online before going to visit them. They have private rooms where you can meet and interact with different dogs and talk with the staff about their history. We adopted our dog three weeks ago from the shelter and can't imagine life without him! He is a sweet boy and we are very thankful that his former owner took him to GBHS. The people that work there are very nice and definitely have the animals' best interests in mind. If you aren't looking for a new pet, consider shopping at their on site store for your current pet - proceeds go back to the shelter! read more

Great people, great mission, great facility. Can't help but love the work they do here. We adopted a pup a few months back and it was a great experience. They make it very easy to complete the adoption all in one day. There are a lot of animals there that need help and they provide top notch care until they are adopted. Our puppy was already neutered and had two sets of shots so we only had a couple of vet visits to make sure everything was completed. We've been back for some training classes that they run for a very reasonable price and I like to go drop off some toys from time to time as well. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this shelter and the people who work here. My boyfriend and I drove from Florida because we saw a few pups online we wanted to meet in person. Yesterday it was snowing in Birmingham (not exactly a regular occurrence!) and they were closed because of the weather. There were no adoption counselors there and almost everyone had gone home. The CEO agreed to let us in when she found out how far we'd driven! We meet two of the pups we wanted to see and fell in love with one in particular. An adoption counselor took time out of her day to counsel us over the phone, and walked one of the other kind ladies through the paperwork process. At no point did they make is feel like an imposition, and they were just as thrilled as we were when we adopted our new pup! They were kind and knowledgeable and ridiculously accomodating. We even made a Facebook live video to commemorate the occasion. I am so deeply grateful for everyone who helped us yesterday. The shelter is clean and the staff is top-notch. You will not regret an adoption made here. Thank you for making our dreams come true yesterday and helping us find our forever pet! We will NEVER forget you. read more

I adopted a kitten from here 2 weeks ago. Sweetest kitten ever.. They said he just needed one more shot, but he was perfectly healthy. Next day, took him to the vet, got the shot.. Well, the next day, I noticed what looked like a scratch under his eye... Then the day after, it got bigger.. It continued a few days, with me thinking he maybe got irritated by something and kept scratching it.. A few days later, my kittens face is covered in the worst scabs I've ever seen and most of his hair is all gone! I took him to the vet.. They ran tests and found out he has ringworm! They said he definitely contracted it from the humane society. His suffering breaks my heart. I've invested so much money into this cat because of a disease he got from the humane society. It's highly contagious and I have a 2 year old!!!! So I'm having to quarantine my cat for however many weeks or months it takes for him to heal.. This is not acceptable. I know if I took him back to the humane society, all they will do is euthanize him.. When I say it's bad, I mean horrible. 90% of his face is a huge scab that's been clawed over and over with no hair at all :[ Please pray he gets better soon.. He's such a sweet soul and doesn't deserve the pain he is having to endure. read more

i recently visited the gbhs with my mother, to find her a new dog, she had recently lost her "baby", and wanted a new companion. we found her a lovely bassett-hound mix, about 6.5- 7 yrs old. he is so mellow, not a barker or howler. she is so happy to have a new "baby". while we were there, my husband and i spotted a 4 yr old white german shepard. we were not there to adopt, we had lost our shepard of 13.5 yrs last summer, and were heartbroken. to say the least, we fell in love. we are the now proud owner's of a beautiful white shepard. all the volunteers/staff members were so kind and true animal lovers. it makes my heart happy to know that the gbhs is a place animals get a second chance to find the right home. kudo's to all the folks who work there!!! read more

A couple months ago I went to the GBHS on a Saturday morning in hopes of finding a puppy to adopt. I was there for over 4 hours and found the sweetest little Australian shepherd mix girl. I paid $100 for the adoption fee plus bought food, a collar, leash, bed, crate, toys, treats, dog bowls, and everything she would need. Two days later, on Monday afternoon, she wouldn't eat her dinner and was experiencing loose stool. After not eating and being lethargic for another two meals, I took her to her first vet check Wednesday morning at 9a.m. The vet examined her and a parvo test came back positive. He 100% recommended that I take her back to the GBHS and that there was nothing that I could do as she was so weak at only 11 weeks old. When I took her to the GBHS, they were incredibly cold towards me and took her away without me even saying goodbye to her. Not to mention I did not get a single refund or the option to adopt another healthy puppy. I am highly unhappy with this establishment and do not feel comfortable with their pre adoption processes and am infuriated that I spent all that money for 3 days. read more

This place is awful. I saw a senior dog on the home page of their website (featured pet). It stated how sweet and loving he was. I emailed about him as I have always wanted to adopt an elderly dog to live out the remainder of its life in a loving home. I got a response the same day from Jessica saying he was indeed a great dog and we should bring our two dogs in for a meet and greet. I was also told that someone named Tami Joh would be contacting me shortly to provide more information as the dog was very attached to her. I never received a phone call. Two days later (Saturday) my husband called and spoke to Jessica about us coming to meet the dog. He was told we needed to bring our dogs and proof of shots. I called shortly after to confirm exactly what we needed. We arrived at the humane society, filled out the application and waited to meet with an adoption counselor, David. He informs us that the dog is "special needs" and the person we need to speak to isn't there. It turns out that the "special need" is that Tami Joh would "have my head on a platter" as Jessica put it if they let the dog leave without her there. We never really got an answer as to why we weren't informed of this before making the trip even though I had been communicating with her by email and we had also talked on the phone. We did get a chance to meet the dog who under the care of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society has become a fearful biter. We were told by the kennel worker that brought him in that he tries to bite them but when he first came in he wasn't like that at all. She stated that everyone could pick him up and pet him. But, now he only likes Tami Joh. We asked why she didn't adopt him. We were told the first time because she has a really high energy dog and this dog wouldn't like that. We were later told it was because she didn't have the room and already had two or three dogs. This dog is only 11 pounds. We asked if she could come in and were told no beause "she has roller derby". At the end of it all, after meeting the dog we were told we were not the right fit because he needed a single person household. He did not act at all bothered by my dogs, my husband or myself. We were also told by Jessica that he was much worse when he first came in which is the complete opposite of what the kennel worker said. When we brought this up, Jessica said she didn't know why she would say that. Maybe they need to get their stories straight. The bottom line is we wanted to save a dog that has its days numbered and were turned down because of the ignorance of GBHS. Now he will die there, thanks to them. read more

So after the failure of the volunteers the vet failed us. My gf saw another kitten she was interested in and went to go meet her. I also went. We did end up adopting her as she is beautiful and adorable. Took her for her well kitty check as per the shelter and found out she is sick. The kind of sick that won't go away and is contagious to other cats. So my well cat is also no longer well. This is not acceptable. I beg you to go to another shelter for any and all adoptions. read more

I went to the GBHS to surrender puppies. This is almost always a difficult decision for folks to make and it also keeps the GBHS in business by providing the animals that will be sold to the public. However, you should NOT be treated horribly. I was shamed, menaced, chased to my car, and my car beaten!!! This was because I did not have my drivers license. I am not a criminal, don't have a record, am a tax-paying homeowner who found herself in an overwhelming situation. I am an older professional who was absolutely shocked by this behavior. The director was just as horrible as the employee who did this. She did not even want to hear the details, and acted annoyed and very rude immediately. I suppose that soon, they will not have a facility if they keep treating people like this. I know they have had trouble in the past year and maybe this is why. I am sorry I left my animals with them too, and wonder how they were treated later if I was treated like this. This episode has forever changed my opinion and I will talk about to everyone with every opportunity I get. The one star they got is only so that I could post this. Very rude to my mom who tried to adopt a kitten. This animal society will not allow for there kittens to be declawed (which is necessary in most indoor cat situations & which is practically harmless to the cat) claiming "it's like if we cut off your fingers" (which is not true). Instead of allowing a cat to come to a nice, warm, loving family, they denied us adoption services for a sad reason. Instead of wanting their cats to live and go to a nice home, they would rather keep them there to soon be put down (because the cats will be put down after a certain period of time staying in the shelter) & I find that sad. The staff is so rude there. I waited for 2 hours just to see one kitten. The "screening" was a joke. They finally brought the baby in a room for me to see, and I just knew he was the one for me. The girl didn't ask any questions about me at all, and the questions I asked her about the kitty, she had no answers for. I was told he was 10 weeks old. But when I took him to my vet I was told that he was about 4 weeks and sick. That baby should of still been with his mama!!! AND he had already been fixed!!!!!! WHAT??? But it's okay.
