I went to the school to get a student haircut, and I left more disappointed than ever…read more FAIL: The space for the haircuts was a total mess, chairs and tables all over the place, heads placed around every available space, uncleaned floors and windows--just disgusting! FAIL: When I got a student, I provided him with a clear description of what I wanted him to do (description below), yet several times he was unsure of what the simple instructions meant, so he had to call over his instructor. The sad thing is that the instructor was also fairly clueless. He keeps insisting on ignoring my instructions and doing only what he knows. My hair is naturally curly when the length is greater than 1.25 inches, yet he treated my hair like it was straight. It's appalling that students aren't properly taught the difference in curly vs. straight hair, so I'll never go back and tell everyone not to go here. FAIL: The student also decided to shorten my beard that naturally blends into my hair without asking me. I asked what he was doing without my consent and he said, "Oh, OK" Analysis: The students ARE CLEARLY NOT taught to keep their workspace clean, the difference between curly and straight hair, or that you should always ask the customer if the directions they're going in are right. My instructions: "Keep the top around ¾ to 1 inch to control the curl. Use scissors only on the sides -- don't shorten them, just remove bulk. Blend the sides into the top softly with scissors, no thinning shears."

Despite how many students attend the school, she made an effort to get to know us and remember our names. Ms. Ruth was recently promoted to Administrative Assistant for the ADN Program, and it is so well deserved! It was truly a full-circle moment when she was the one who emailed my letter of acceptance for the second portion of the program. Since I don't see Ms. Ruth at the front desk anymore, I usually stop by the Admin Office just to say hi and ask how she and her family are doing. Nursing school can be stressful and challenging, but Ms. Ruth has made me feel heard and supported since the very beginning. Thank you as well to Professor Marion German, Professor Leah Baltazar, and Dr. Dela Cruz for taking the time to meet with my cohort regularly to listen to our concerns and provide support since we started the program. Having such a supportive administrative team while beginning the ADN program has been invaluable to my learning experience at MFSON.

If I could give this school negative stars I would…read more Except! Oh except for two absolutely wonderful people who went above and beyond for me as a student. Anytime I had something good happen for me at this school, or felt like someone cared about my learning or my career prospects it was due to the wonderful staff who worked directly with me as a student. The first was Cassie, one of the professors in the CST program. Cassie truly embodies the idea of lead how you would wish to be led. Every day in class she greeted us with patience, kindness, and an endless enthusiasm for what she was teaching. There was no question I could not ask of her, no issue I could not bring up that she didn't give her full attention to. If I needed help I knew I could rely on her for guidance, honesty and encouragement. She really is a marvel of a teacher and probably the best thing to have happened to our class as a whole. I knew multiple students who were close to abandoning the program altogether until she stepped in to teach us. Is was an honor to have been her student. And the second was Jesse in career services. I swear that man carried the whole of my career on his back when I first graduated. He made himself available to me anytime I had a question and had my back through thick and thin. He was an absolute light in the dark for when I felt lost and overwhelmed with the process of applying to different hospitals and the advice and encouragement he gave me on MULTIPLE occasions made all the difference in the world. I can honestly say without his help and guidance I would not have gotten the job I did. I am forever indebted to his unfailing concern and care for the wellbeing and success of his students. Everything else sucked though.

I've always been drawn to nature and revisited landscape painting with oil paints about 7 years ago…read moreafter having not painted since grade school. I've been quite fortunate to have painted with several very talented painters who happened to be instructors, as well. The Art Academy has given me the impetus to paint not only more often, but with confidence, especially, at the painting's sometimes difficult initial stages. I dove into the class after having had it recommended by an artist friend of mine. After several years in Stuart's studio class I've learned an entirely new approach to both studio painting and my original goals for plein air techniques.
