This bus gets me from its first stop to Federal Street in under a half an hour, without the hassle of stopping at too many red lights, dealing with BU kids who have a state of the art fitness center yet can't be bothered to walk 100 extra feet to get to class, and people who smell like they haven't showered since the Reagan 80's. I have an extra half an hour in the morning to relax, an extra half an hour at night, and all for $30 a month extra. Well worth it. If you live within a mile of one of these express buses and you have to go downtown in the morning - this is the only way to travel. Pay the extra $30 - it will immediately improve the quality of your commute, and the quality of your life, and I stand by that statement.

The biggest improvement in the system has been the introduction of the Charlie Card, which is similar to London's Oyster and is a "stored value" contactless card where you charge it up (or pay a monthly fee) and simply swipe it at the turnstile. Easy. The stations have narrow platforms. In many places, the concrete is cracked and stained. The announcements are difficult to hear or understand. The trains are loud and run down. The seating has exposed edges and places behind to put trash. I've ridden metros in more than two dozen cities. From Atlanta and Amsterdam, Basel and Brussels and even Tokyo and Taipei. I can honestly say that I have experienced better.

It allowed people to live without a car freeing up space and lessening pollution. Then came COVID-19. It hasn't been the same since. Now down to 6 hours a day it's a shadow of its former self. Better than nothing, but not quite what it was. What's especially sad about this situation is that the area is growing rapidly. Just as more buildings are being built and more residents and businesses moving in we have service cuts. This in turn forces new members of the community to own cars or resort to Uber or Lyft which brings more traffic into an already congested area. Add the 35,000 extra people flooding in during Red Sox games and concerts and you have to scratch your head and wonder why this bus route is always the target of cuts. Rather than the MBTA Promoting the benefits and convenience of using this bus service they slash service discouraging use. This bus is a little specialized for those living in the Fenway area- but if you ever have friends that want to have drinks before going downtown, don't fret the walk! You can easily pick up the bus and be dropped off in prime locations on Boylston St. Going back, on the other hand, seems to take forever- I've only ever picked it up at Copley or outside the Prudential Center (Cheesecake Factory entrance)- but again, usually always on time.

This tends to happen modt often on Fridays (like this one), and is completely unannounced, so I'll assume it's because the MBTA literally has only one driver available for this route and doesn't bother to find a replacement for our Chelsea boy who just spent a long weekend hugging porcelain in the bathroom of the Tavern at the End of the World. I've also had the pleasure of taking this bus in the middle of the day, when I am literally the only rider for the entire route. It was really creepy and the bus smelled like bad gin and I wouldn't recommend it. If the MBTA were to do something actually useful, like hire a systems analyst, then they might figure out that running routes like this north of the river in the middle of the day when everyone is at work downtown is a huge waste of money. The savings could then be used to not only pay that systems analyst's crappy government salary, but also would allow the 85 to run later at night when people actually need it, and on weekends, again, when people actually need it.

It's a commuter bus line that runs until around 7:30pm only Monday through Friday. I hate this bus because it seems to run on a random schedule that changes daily. This is mostly because there's one bus that runs in a loop and it gets stuck in traffic going through Union Square. Also, because there's only one bus, it only runs about every 40 minutes in the morning - so your choices are 8:10 or 8:40 (give or take a few minutes). Also, the current bus driver is seriously the most surly individual on the planet. A few weeks ago the buzzer was broken and he just skipped a lot of the stops near/around Union Square. A woman was standing near the front told him so and he said "Do I LOOK like a mind reader?" and when she explained that standing near the front should signal that she wanted to get off he said "Oh yea? And how'd that work out for you?". So, if you don't mind the nasty driver and random arrival times - the 85 bus is a pretty convenient route to get you from Somerville to Cambridge.

It's dining options are not as good as say Central or Porter and still caters to the commuter crowd. The places I like to go in Kendall are Shy Bird, State Park, Cambridge Brewing Company, and Dumpling Daughter. Kendall is very pedestrian and bike friendly. Despite all the changes to the neighborhood over the years, thankfully the Kendall Square Cinema is still around and thriving.

I lived in DC for 15 years and rode the Metro quite a lot. I…read morealso traveled to NY and rode their subway many times. This is world class right here. In this location you can't buy a ticket so if you don't have one you may not be able to ride. I had a paper ticket but not enough credit for the ride. The driver was very nice and allowed me to board anyway. Later on my trip I bought what is called a CharlieCard that allows you inlayed trips in a 24 hour period for $11 bucks. I rode to Copley Square and then Government Center and back to Longwood Medical. It was easy, on time, clean and quick. It seemed very safe and all the stations were clean and seemed safe. My only down grade of one star is that they don't tell you that in some locations you can ride for free. I like free but has I known, I would not have purchased the CharlieCard. Also, the stations themselves are not well marked. Fortunately I everyone I met and asked for help was very nice and gave me great direcitons. The other downgrade is that if there are alot of people standing, you may not see the 'next stop' info on the scrolling sign. Also, many of the stops did not have the name of the stop on the wall so you could confirm your location. Overall I thought it was a very good and affordable option for getting around a very big city.
