I've been going to Green Rocks almost every year and its always an excellent experience. From getting picked up at the airport, to lodging, INCREDIBLE DELICIOUS FOOD, to fishing! Im not much of a hunter but I love going for the gorgeous scenery and fishing! Especially for crab shrimp and halibut! The BEST! Its seriously so Beautiful Here! When it came to fishing the crew always had my fishing pole ready with either my halibut/salmon set up. Yes its "self guided" fishing so they provided a very easy map to follow and pointed me to what they called a "honey hole". Even though its self guided they were still helpful in areas on where to fish. I definitely didnt catch the biggest halibut but I was proud of it! Im 100lbs and fighting with the 25lb halibut was tough hahaha! I also caught loads of crabs and shrimp in my pots! EVERYDAY! HECK YES! I will definitely be coming back again to Green Rocks! The crew is always so helpful and very knowledgeable. The owners are also very helpful and attentive to anything, weather its a question about fishing or just to tell stories, and wanting more wine...for myself! Hahaha! If there was ever an issue, everyone at Green Rocks was always there to help and resolve it. I couldnt figure out how to operate the heater in my cabin and one of the crew members were on it right away got it fixed! I was warm and toasty again! Great service all around! If youre an avid fisherman/woman, love the outdoors, or just want a peaceful getaway...(with delicious food) I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND a visit to Green Rocks Lodge! I've been a guest at Green Rocks a few times since my first visit of June 2012. That year I went with my wife. I'm an "eastcoaster" and grew up fishing MD/VA/NJ waters for flounder(fluke) which I enjoy immensely. I had this idea that a halibut must be like a flounder on steroids and just had to find out if I was right. :) I saw lots of AK lodges at the outdoor shows that I went to. It was hard to pick one. I will say that I'm an avid fisherman and have owned quite a few boats (and know how to navigate safely). That's how I fell into the idea of going to a self-guided lodge. I figured I knew how to run the boat, and I've been crazy about fishing since I was 4, and this is "Alaska- Land Of The Midnight Sun" isn't it? I thought that if I went to a fully guided place then I'd get an 8 hr fishing day from the captain/crew but what would I do with all those other daylight hours when all I really came there to do was fish? Self-guided lodges set you up with rod/reels/bait/tackle and let you fish way beyond 8 hours if you like. So then I went and watched some YouTube videos and eventually settled in on Green Rocks Lodge as my choice. The videos showed people catching fish/crabs/shrimp and the scenery looked amazing and so different than what I'm used to. Upon staying there a few times I can say that the videos were true. We've had some great days fishing/crabbing/shrimping and some slower days too. No 2 days are the same. That's fishing and the challenges of finding fish and getting them to bite (often takes patience and also you begin to learn tide timing as you get more experience). As far as lodge amenities go at Green Rocks, the food is super. They feed you family style in the main lodge (each group gets there own cabin with beds and shower, the cabins are pretty plain.... that's not bad, it's Alaska...... they keep you dry ...... did I mention it likes to rain in southeast Alaska? ..... a bunch on some trips ...... so good rain gear is a must! ...... the cabins have heat and are comfortable enough ........ I pretty much only spend time in them showering or sleeping..... other than that I want to be on the water!). So you get a hot breakfast and a hot dinner. Mealtime is when you can trade stories (lies :) ) with other guests about who caught what/where/how etc. They put out stuff for you to make your lunch of however many sandwiches you want to take with you in the boat for the day- who wants to come back just to get lunch when there are fish to be caught? The boats are 17-20 ft outboards. You get the smaller "open" style skiff as part of your lodge price. When I told the owner I was coming with my wife on that first trip he suggested I consider upgrading to the larger "covered" boats that have a roof and keep you out of the rain. That cost $500 then (might be $600 now) and was so worth it. They set you up with radio/gps in each boat. I think the open boats are good with 2 people and feel crowded with 3. The covered boats could easily handle 3 or 4 guests. A time or 2 I've had issues with a rod/reel so I brought it to the boat-boys there and they either fixed it or got me a new one. The boat-boys work there and are basically college kids who love the outdoors and get to spend summers in AK. They keep your boats full on fuel, help get you all your baits, show you how to rig lines for fish you're after, help push your boat off the beach and gather it up when you return, grab your fish off the boat and professionally fillet it followed by commercial grade vacuum seal the deal. They only handle one group's fish at a time on the cleaning table and mark the packages accordingly so you know that you're getting only fish back that you caught. The boat-boys can also help point out spots on the maps given to each group (the maps already have red stars on them for places to try fishing). We've caught some nice halibut, salmon, rockfish (including Yelloweye), cod and other species. My wife caught a 64lb halibut on our first visit there. That was midweek. I recall it took us a little while to put it all together and start catching well. The boat-boys helped get us on track. I've gone to Green Rocks with my sons and had tremendous fun as well. I think you'll find that like anything else time and experience there will lead to more success in catching fish. But you gotta put the time in. My biggest fish there (and for me- anywhere) was a 127 lb halibut caught in 2016. You wanna talk about excitement as you crank this fish up from the depths and bring along side the boat and look to your right and there's your wife with the harpoon fixed and ready to be pushed hard through the fish right behind the gills. That's when you realize I never had to harpoon a flounder in VA! :) Anyway, I've given a long review to help others understand what "Self-Guided" means. I have been to Green Rocks Lodge several times & it's always a great experience. They are there to pick you up at the airport in Petersburg & take you to your cabin. You are given maps, equipment & information on areas to fish by the owner Tim & his son Jason. Being self guided you have the option to go where & when you want to go. It is a great place for hunting & fishing (although I'm not a hunter, I have seen bears & wolves brought in). I have caught halibut, salmon, rock fish & crabs. The crew is friendly & always there to help you. They have your boat fueled & ready to go in the morning. They clean, fillet & package your fish when you return with your catch each day. The chefs prepare delicious meals with something different everyday & even a Yummy dessert! You won't see more beautiful scenery & the wildlife is all around you. I've seen deer, bears, eagles, whales, porpoise, otters & lots of smaller animals & birds. I recommend Green Rocks Lodge for a great place to go. We don't typically write reviews for anything but we feel compelled to share our experience at Green Rocks Lodge. The lodge only has one thing going for it and that is the food and Jim the Chef. Our (and the other guests) number one concern was SAFETY. We paid $600.00 to upgrade to a covered boat and the snaps on the canvas cover were broken so when it rained the driver got soaked. The first day my wife's boat seat broke off the pedestal and she landed on her back in the middle of the boat because it only had one screw in it. The bilge pump ran non-stop the entire time; no quiet serenity within the beautiful surroundings. The boat was a riveted boat (not welded) and leaked. When we expressed our concern to the owners they reassured us that "the boat will not sink completely because it has foam in it"!. UNBELIEVABLE! Guests were sent out in their boats after breakfast sometimes with no radios, no fishing poles, no bait, no pliers, broken tackle boxes, etc. Some boats had anchor ropes so short they could not fish where they wanted to. Our trolling motor as well as several other guests trolling motors never worked. Whenever we told them of a problem they would give us their standard line of "We'll look into it" which was never done. Our main motor quit on us in the shipping lane and would not restart. We had to flag down a passing boat from another lodge. We lost half a day of fishing. Most radios did not work (in 5 1/2 days of fishing we only had one radio that worked). Several guests were shocked to be GROSSLY shorted on their fish weight on the morning of departure and unbelievably halibut cheeks were missing from the fish boxes. We were charged $236.00 extra for a propeller that we did not damage. When confronting the lodge owner he admitted it was damaged prior to us and charged us anyway. The overall feeling was they didn't care about anything but having our money and the majority of the guests said they would never go back. There are many great fishing lodges in Alaska, Green Rocks is not one of them. read more

My husband and I visited green rocks lodge in the Fall of 2016. His brother and girlfriend finally decided to join us on an Alaskan fishing trip. The prior two years we fished with a wonderful company (economical guided fishing) in Ketchikan ( no longer operating) and brought home 140 and 75 pounds of salmon with a little Halibut, between the two of us. My husband found Green rocks at the sport mans show and the owner assured him that we didn't need guides at all. (I felt we should have a guide for one or two days to see the equip and techniques best in that area). We were told they provided everything thing we needed and salmon and halibut were "right there" within a short distance from the lodge. We ordered a two bedroom cabin for the two couples. The two bedroom turned out to be two areas with rods and a slightly skimpy curtain to pull across the opening. The dining area was cozy and inviting and the food was always timely and quite tasty! The two cooks were great... friendly, helpful with fishing advice and extremely accommodating to various dietary requests of guests. You have now heard the high point of the trip. We spent a lot of money to fly up and stay 7 nights( for 6 days of fishing). The four of us went out all day every day and did not catch a fish! ( had one bite!) the poles were fair and I was able to trade in mine that was rusty and barely worked. Apparently many of the boats took on water, and ours was so bad we had an auxiliary bilge pump we had to manually turn on every 15-20 min and run for a while. The short wave radio batteries died while we were out and no back ups. Tools on boat were rusty and poorly functioning. We asked daily for advice and tried everything they recommended and went to different areas every day. One of the boats had some return customers who brought boxes of their own gear and filled a wheelbarrow with their halibut every day but one (when they unsuccessfully tried salmon fishing.) If that equip and expertise had been available through a guide for even one day, we could surely have caught on and carried on! It was hard to watch that every day after the assurance that we "Really Didn't need a Guide". On departure day... we all loaded in boats to be shuttled back across to the pier on the other side. The motors on two boats loaded with all our luggage ( the 16? Guests) would not start and they had to mobilize two other boats and transfer all the bags. It was like some ironic bad dream but that was our stay at green rocks. read more

Better late than never. I traveled to Green Rocks for the first time last year. Caught my first Halibut, cod and several other fish. What an experience. And, what service. Way beyond my expectations. Plenty of food and darn good. Fishing gear was weathered but worked flawlessly. I see they upgraded the old Penn to new Shimano. Our group stayed here last summer and after seeing a 1 star rating we had to speak up and give our 5 stars! Green Rocks is the Best! From the owner to the crew you will be treated to the best Alaskan experience of your life. When we arrived we received an excellent fishing and navigation orientation which helped us so much in catching our halibut and Kings. The boats and fishing equipment were in good condition and never had an issue. We followed the instructions given to us and were very successful. The crew was always ready for us and stayed busy cleaning all our fish and keeping our boats clean and always fueled and ready We enjoyed our private cabin - it was clean and cozy - the bed was Very comfortable. The cooks did a great job and we always had a fantastic hot meal waiting for us - and always a tasty dessert too We enjoyed our vacuum packed fish for a long while and plan on returning again soon to visit with Tim and his crew We give Green Rocks 5 Stars!! read more

I have been to green rocks lodge in 2015 to do a fishing trip as well as a black bear hunt. I booked a 2 week trip with the owner. We did see a few bears and I was able to harvest a nice bear. I am from Utah and have never caught big fish. The fishing was good I did catch more then my fair share of halibut. The lodge took care of the fish for me, they filleted the fish for me and then vacuumed sealed the fish for me. The food was top notch always great. The reason I liked Greenrocks lodge is that it is self guided, you not tied to a group, your free to drive the boat anywhere you wish. this was in the top 2 best hunting and fishing trips I have been on. I would recommend Greenrocks to anyone looking to do a self guided hunting and fishing trip in Alaska. read more

My Dad, Brother and I visited Green Rocks Lodge September of 2016 and were very disappointed. the accommodations ( Lodge, Food, Staff) were very nice but the fishing and hunting were below standards. we booked the trip a year in advance in hopes to Deer hunt, we met the owner and his son at the Sportsman's show and asked them a ton of questions. We were told there was plenty of deer and we should be able to fill out tags no problem. when we got to the lodge there were also quite a few deer hunters that were told the same thing as us about the overabundant amount of deer. after two days of hunting no one saw a single animal, and were told by the owner and his son that it was too early for deer. we switched to just fishing and caught a few Halibut but the equipment we used was way outdated and broken. In closing if you book with Green Rocks do not expect to hunt, it is a fishing lodge and expect to bi given a Boat, GPS, Horrible equipment and a map. you have to do the rest with little advice. I do not recommend Green Rocks Lodge, it is not worth the amount of money you spend. Us and almost all the other guest's were very disappointed read more
