We have been fishing with Green Rocks Wilderness Lodge for approximately 9 years and each year is a new experience for us. We like the fact that this is a "self-guided" lodge and we are able to do our own thing. We can pick our own fishing spot and if we don't like it we can move to a new one. Even if we don't catch a fish we enjoy the beautiful and peaceful experience of South East Alaska.
We love to fish and when we go to Green Rocks Wilderness Lodge we are ready for halibut, salmon, rock fish, crab and shrimp. YUM! Along with the fishing we enjoy seeing tons of wildlife (bear, Sitka deer, wolf, whales, seals, otters, eagles, moose, etc). While we haven't hunted at Green Rocks we have been at the lodge when hunters bring back their bear or wolf. One day we will plan a hunting trip but for now it's only been hunting with a camera.
We always come home with fish. Of course there are days we may not catch anything but that is why they call it "fishing" not "catching". Any day on the water is a good day!
While the lodge is a fishing/hunting lodge the accommodations are very basic but comfortable. Each group has their own cabin so you aren't sharing a cabin with people you don't know. And, each cabin has it's own private bathroom. They also provide bottled water in each cabin and there is a small fridge for any additional items you would like to keep cool.
A boat is included in your stay and the boats we've had have been comfortable and we have found that the lodge does everything to make them comfortable for guests. Since the lodge is located in South East Alaska, the Rain Forest, we try to have a covered boat but is is also very important to have rain gear. There have been many years where it didn't rain at all on us during our stay, and was down right HOT, but it's best to be prepared.
The crew has always been very accommodating and have taken good care of us. They have our boat fueled up and ready to go each morning, have our bait ready for us, and gather up our catch at the end of the day. They filet the fish to our specifications, vacuum seal and freeze it for us. On our last morning they put all our fish in a box for the trip home.
The meals are just like at home, served up family style. Good food, good conversation, good people! Meals are something different each day. And they understand die hard fisher "people" and have sandwich items available for you take out for lunch. Also, if you catch crab and would like to eat some that day they will cook it up for you as a snack or to eat with your meal. Nothing better than fresh crab!
We have always enjoyed visiting Green Rocks Wilderness Lodge and look forward to our next visit. If you are looking to do your "own thing" this is the lodge for you. read more
