What a divine patch of green Redden Gardens makes in Covington. Murals, sunflowers, blackberries, and more are all the things you will discover if you attend one of their super friendly, way laid back, awesome events. If you happen by when it is closed to the public, you can help yourself to the ripe blackberries growing along the fence (but leave some for others!), or check the trough by the frontgate to see if the community has any vegetables to offer. Today there were onions. There is also a Covington community shelf along the side of the building to check. Wonderful place, nice people, serene vibe in the center of Covington. They give so much!

We enjoyed some lovely tart currants during our visit. Mindful of food insecurity in the area, excess produce is shared on a table outside of the garden. This is usually done during the summer months. At the corner of Scott and 10th St. is also a sunflower share box. Box has been known to include snacks, seeds and books. Looking to get involved? We helped with weeding, removal of invasive species, picking up of trash, and preparing some land through Keeping Covington Beautiful. We had children in our group ranging in age of 5-17. I missed this the first drive around the area looking for murals, so I'm glad I swung by a second time. This adorable patch of land was created as a free garden by The Bread Box, an art gallery 100 or so feet away. It's not a community garden in the usual sense of that term, hence my calling it a free garden: The signs welcome folks to take whatever they wish that is ripe. When I was there not much was ready for harvest, but what was planted included basil, cilantro, dill, squash, and tomato. The dill was ready, actually; some of it was flowering and so deliciously fragrant. The smell of flowering dill always makes me think of my grandpa, because he would use it in his dill pickles and that's what made them so delicious (to this day I can't eat any other dill pickles than what he taught me to make because they aren't as piquant because he used a lot). It made me want to start canning some dill pickles. This is a really sweet addition to the neighborhood and a lovely gift. I really wish free gardens and edible plants for municipal landscaping would take off; it's such a great way for neighbors to care for one another.

I stumbled upon Granny's Garden school through a Yelp service event we were doing and instantly…read morefell in love. Now Granny's Garden school is actually part of Loveland Elementary school. We looked and looked and could not find it because the place itself does not exist. Granny herself runs this nonprofit as more of an educational giving back kind of initiative. As we were moving piles of mulch to the garden beds we met her in person and wow what a special person! She explained to all of us the history of how she got started and it was basically to teach children early about how to eat healthy and that healthy eating can be fun, and delicious! She also said that each classroom of the school has a plot that they are responsible for growing during the season. The class then harvests the plants and they are used for the school's lunches!!! How cool is that? We had processed patties of who knows what slopped on our trays. She even said that kids will eat raw veggies right out of the garden. And when I say raw, some of the kids just take bites out of tomatoes and eat them whole! What a great cause. I would have never even known about this place, but if you are looking to volunteer or just have fun giving back this is a great great place. There were even some high school kids earning class credit on the day we went.

It's nice that this connects to Bill Yeck for additional trail fun. Forest Field has a paved path, a gravel path, and some grass trails. They also have indoor bathrooms and water refill during the warmer months. During the winter they bring a port-a-potty in. Very nice place to enjoy some outside time.
