It feels odd writing a review for a cemetery, but I have been here a bunch of times, either as the main part of walking tours or as part of other walks, such as to Prospect Park, or otherwise at various times of the year. Side note, I am pretty sure it's free for solo people, but if you go with a large enough group, they have a $5 fee per person, which is reasonable. In general, I would recommend coming here in the fall, not just because the weather will be nicer, but also because the trees are beautiful, and winter is nice as well, due to the frozen lake, among other things. The spring is nice as well, but there are better places to see leaves in bloom, as there are more wintery shrubs here. The area is massive, and you could honestly spend many hours going to various corners. There are highlights such as a well-known view of the Statue of Liberty, many sculptures, and graves for people ranging from Samuel Morse to Boss Tweed to Leonard Bernstein to Louis Comfort Tiffany to Henry Chadwick, among others, along with many people from various wars, of course, such as the civil war with one particularly interesting grave having a confederate and union soldier next to each other for reasons. The place is particularly well-maintained compared to other cemeteries I have been to, with the entrance being striking among other things. read more

Never been a fan of randomly wandering around a cemetery however, went for a star gazing event; we weren't able to walk around on the grounds however the chapel was beautiful. We returned the following day and was able to walk the grounds. It appears to be a frequent tourist location to see graves of famous NYers were are buried on the compound. overall rating: 4.5 I've heard great things and wish they still had koi fish visiting. I went once in the fall and the second for their Halloween event. The Halloween even is not worth it. Some "acts" were really cool, however the price is way too steep. If it was ~$60 I think it's a good find. But $80 was too much. The circus act was also completely random. Wish there were more ghost stories, or history about the people buried there. It would be more Halloween and respectful of the graves. read more

Green-Wood is having a Grand Opening Weekend Celebration on April 18 & 19 - from 10-5 on the 18th and from 10-3 on the 19th - for the beautiful new building called the Green-House (across from the cemetery's main entrance). It will be a community space for public programs, a mini-museum, a location for research & education, and more. There's a visitor welcome and orientation area, a room for community meetings, a restored greenhouse space, two exhibition galleries, a Center for Research (to access & study the cemetery's records [including environmentally-controlled storage for 185+ years of archival documents]), restrooms and staff offices. Funding was provided by many New York state & city agencies plus charitable organizations and individual donors. After the Grand Opening Weekend Celebration, regular hours will be from 10-7 on Thursday-Monday. A group of us went to this cemetery in Brooklyn. It's not your typical cemetery as most of us would view it. It's more like an arboretum with beautiful trees, flowers, sculptures and famous people buried there. We had a guided tour about 2 hours. Our guide was very knowledgeable and fun. Historic, peaceful and a little creepy - it's a cemetery after all. Other reviewers have already described it in great detail. The gothic revival style gates and the chapel are NYC landmarks. * Photos are allowed for personal use, social media is encouraged; editorial & commercial use requires written permission. * The main gate has a brochure and maps available- you can ask for one - so you don't get lost. Cars are allowed. Established in 1848, this serene and historic cemetery is a place of remarkable beauty and quiet reflection. It is the final resting place of over 600,000 people, including notable figures such as Leonard Bernstein and Boss Tweed. The grounds are peaceful and expansive, inviting visitors to wander among striking architecture and thoughtfully maintained landscapes. It is also a certified arboretum, adding to its natural beauty. The terrain is quite hilly, and without a map it's easy to lose your bearings. There is one main entrance and three additional entrances. I entered through the Sunset Parkway entrance. I've come to Green-Wood Cemetery a few times throughout the years, and calling it a cemetery doesn't do it justice. Part sculpture garden, part history museum, and part nature sanctuary, all spread across nearly 500 acres of rolling hills right in the middle of Brooklyn, this is one of most astonishing public space I've ever seen. The Gothic Revival arches by Richard Upjohn at the main entrance on 25th Street are, quite literally, breathtaking, and set the tone perfectly for what's inside--this mix of art, architecture, and quiet beauty everywhere you look. The landscape itself is stunning: winding paths shaded by century-old trees[1], peaceful ponds, and views that make you forget you're still in New York City. But what really makes Green-Wood special are the monuments and mausoleums scattered across the grounds. It's like walking through an open-air museum of 19th-century architecture. Grand Gothic tombs, neoclassical temples, Egyptian-inspired crypts, designed by some of the most talented architects of their time--Upjohn, Minard Lafever, Warren & Wetmore, and more. A few that really stood out to me: the Steinway family's elegant classical mausoleum, the dramatic Gothic one built for William Niblo, and the Lispenard family's Norman-style monument. There's also a haunting memorial to the SS Arctic disaster, featuring a half-sunken ship carved in stone. Can a cemetery be a cool learning experience? Yes, when we honor the dead and learn more about them, what contributions they made. "Greenwood Cemetery brings people closer to the world as it is and was, by memorializing the dead and bringing to life the art, history and natural beauty of NYC". "Founded in 1838 and now a National Historic Landmark, Green-Wood was one of the first rural cemeteries in America. By the early 1860s, it had earned an international reputation for its magnificent beauty and became the prestigious place to be buried, attracting 500,000 visitors a year, second only to Niagara Falls as the nation's greatest tourist attraction. Crowds flocked there to enjoy family outings, carriage rides, and sculpture viewing in the finest of first generation American landscapes. Green-Wood's popularity helped inspire the creation of public parks, including New York's Central and Prospect Parks". I didn't know much about Greenwood before taking a free ninety minute tour sponsored by Brooklyn City Council. As the tour started, I was mesmerized by the Gothic Arch entrance and the extraordinary landscape and soon to learn history of this beautiful landmark. Here's a few notable findings: 1. 8000 trees stand tall throughout this cemetery, thus, in 2015 it's accredited as an arboretum 2. Famous artists are buried here such as Leonard Bernstein, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Jean- Michel Basquiat, Boss Tweed and several members of Theodore Roosevelt family 3. The Historic Chapel, inspired by the chapel in Oxford, England, has been extensively restored. I could only see the beautiful stained glass windows from afar as there was a funeral service taking place inside 4. The first burials at Greenwood took place in 1840 5. In 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge opens and now people who live in Manhattan can cross bridge to get to cemetery 6. On Meadows Avenue, 150,000 graves rest here 7. A dog has her own plot! Elias Howe Jr. ,inventor of the sewing machine, buried his dog Fannie at Greenwood and the poem " Ode to a Dog" is written on her tombstone 8. The cemetery spans 478 acres, it is huge 9. The cemetery was a key site in the Battle of Brooklyn, "the area known as Battle Hill within the cemetery was a strategic point during the battle, and the conflict is commemorated with a statue of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, who faces the Statue of Liberty across the harbor. " 10. The history and the stories! "The girl who died in a horse-related accident in Green-Wood Cemetery is Charlotte Canda. She was thrown from a carriage on her 17th birthday when the horses bolted. She died shortly after the accident, in her parents' arms. Her elaborate monument, designed by her father based on her own design for her aunt's tomb, is a prominent feature in the cemetery. " Her monument is not to be missed. I've always wanted to do one of the tours here but never got around to it. I wanted to see the architecture at the main entrance so we drove up the hill and admired iy from the car. As we were about to leave the guard came to the window and handed us a map and told us just make sure to drive slowly and watch out for the sharp turns. He noticed my puzzled look and asked if we weren't planning on coming in. I had no idea driving throughout the grounds were allowed so of course we hopped on the opportunity. I'm so glad we fot a chance to explore by car. Walking through would have been quite exhausting. It's hilly and I think best in cooler temps if on foot. It's so intriguing though. We kept saying we'd exit at the next turn but the grounds are so beautiful we kept driving. It was nearing sunset and the sky was bursting with sunlit splendor. I feel a little weird glorifying this as a must-visit site , after all, people are in their final resting place. However if you can be respectful and love botanical gardens, statues, architecture, graveyards that aren't eerie you will definitely love the peaceful walk or drive here. There are very famous people buried here and I love that the map gives you some insight on each person's (famous/notable) story. We didn't go searching for those graves . It was jarring to see our family name ( no relation) on a giant gravestone towering more than 9 feet . We took this as an indication to leave lol. read more

This beautiful historical cemetery turned into such a sh*thole! I was recently at a funeral/ceremony there and there were piles of geese sh*t EVERYWHERE, everyone was trying to not step on them but it was impossible since it was everywhere, unavoidable. Then one of the workers there told us how it was being taken over by new owners who worked for Eric Adams and that's why it's gone downhill in fact a few people that have worked there at the cemetery, for years, have been fired. Really messed up, I'd say the new owners are bigger pieces of sh*ts than the piles the geese laid! read more

Always thought cemeteries were places of death and gloom. But this cemetery is beautiful and clean and welcoming. They sell wine. There was music, art and poetry, to honor Jean Michel Basquiat. It was a great event. They have many evening events. They have trolley rides. They give tours. The bathrooms are spotless. The staff are all friendly, not creepy, like in the movies. Beautiful park with great historical relevance to NYC, particularly for the revolutionary period. I've taken student trips there many times. It's a lovely place to walk around especially as the leaves change in the autumn. Unfortunately, the cemetery's staff has recently begun denying entry to people wearing alternative fashion (not costumes). They are often exceptionally rude in a way that feels racist (many of our group are East Asian) and sexist (most of us are young women). We obey the rules and do not photograph. At one point when we were allowed in back in December, a member of the staff followed our group. It was incredibly uncomfortable for everyone in attendance. While it is a functioning cemetery, this is a new turn for the park staff. I've been going to the park for over 16 years now, always in alt fashion as that is my daily wear (even with classes), and haven't had problems until this fall. Perhaps there has been some policy change. If that's the case, please deny entry to everyone or post a public dress code. Otherwise it does seem pointed and discriminatory. read more

I see dead people. OK, maybe not dead people but a whole lotta tombstones. It's 478 acres so surely it must be one of the country's largest cemeteries. Not that I'm a size queen... or a necrophiliac for that matter. However, it is a bit odd how Jamie W. and I have recently visited cemeteries of note like Hollywood Forever (review: https://bit.ly/3oKg5v7) and Westwood Village (review: https://bit.ly/3nuSsHA). Walking in here was quite unplanned as we were making our way from Industry City to Prospect Park. We were taken in by the elaborate Gothic Revival entrance gate (photo). Reading my iPhone as we walked, I discovered it was founded in 1838 and that it was considered Brooklyn's first public park and the model for both Central and nearby Prospect Park. As with cemeteries of this scale, there are notable burials here like Leonard Bernstein, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the Wizard of Oz himself, Frank Morgan. We went over to see Bernstein's memorial bench but not much more since the grounds went on and on. So if you're organizing your own Great Cemeteries tour, consider including this one in Park Slope. As a tourist I was always stuck in Manhattan but I tried expanding last trip. This was truly the highlight! Such a massive cemetery, piled high with history, famous bodies, wildlife, greenery, and immaculate tributes to the dead, as well as a famous US history site. I didn't learn of the parrots until later that day. I wish we could ride bikes inside since it's so huge we got exhausted just seeing 25% of it, there was a tour from someone in a cart that paralleled what we were doing, which might have been a good option as well. You could easily spend days here learning history and soaking up the ambiance and exploring every nook. Keep in mind that the buinesses down the street dont' have public bathrooms and will tell you to go back to the cemetery. read more

I know it's probably weird to visit a cemetery. We were in New York for a few days and my fiance' wanted to visit the grave of Jeremiah G. Hamilton. Jeremiah Hamilton was the first black trader on Wall Street and the first black millionaire in New York. While we were there, we decided to look for the graves of Basquiat (we found it!) and rapper Pop Smoke. It turned out Pop Smoke is actually laid to rest in a crypt, so we were unable to see his. The grounds were beautiful. We were provided with a map to make getting around easier. We got lost on our way out of there. We panicked, because they have a sign outside the gate that warns you you will be LOCKED IN if you don't leave in time. We made it out just in time! Lol... I enjoyed this historical experience. read more

What a cool part of my visit - Green-Wood Cemetery! We walked through the cemetery on our way to brunch. There's not a ton of people doing what we were doing, but it also wasn't deadsville (pun intended). Old monuments, ornate gravestones, gothic entrance - there's a story around every corner! Green-Wood Cemetery is close to the city and easy to get to via subway or car. Train station leaves you a couple blocks away. There are 3 entrances, but if you go through the main one (depending where you need to go), I find it the quickest and easiest way in and out. During services it may be harder to find parking through the main entrance, so pay attention to where you can or cannot park. Grounds are very well maintained along with the inside areas... Main building has gender neutral restrooms - one on each side of the entrance. Main building is where services are held... during the pandemic it was held outdoors by the crematory. Tranquility garden area is nice with a big fish pond...definitely peaceful to watch. Inside is nice and well maintained especially for those paying respects. Wish all visitors would obide by the ground rules to keep it clean (i.e. don't leave food and please clean after your dogs - there are trash bins for that). read more

Very big, beautifully maintained, and as gorgeous as some of the best parks, I really appreciated Green-Wood Cemetery. We saw so many tombs of historical figures; and quite a few resting places from people who were here before we became a country. Note about Service Dogs: check-in at the front and make sure they know you have a service dog with you. We didn't do this and they came to confront us about having a pet in the cemetery. A very cool place to check out, which isn't something often said about a cemetery. Green-Wood Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Brooklyn and probably in all of New York City. You can wander around the grounds and look at famous graves. Many cool examples of architecture. This is also known for its many old trees. It has a main entrance in the northwest corner. It's at 5th Avenue and 25th Street. There's a few other entrances too. Among the most important parts is the chapel. This is one of the great examples of architecture and should be checked out. Among the graves are many famous celebrities and figures. There's artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, composer Leonard Bernstein, baseball inventor Henry Chadwick, Brooklyn Dodgers owner Charles Ebbets, inventor Samuel Morse, piano maker Henry Steinway, and glass maker Louis Comfort Tiffany. Also there's lots of natural wonders to look at. The cemetery has many old trees. Some are hundreds of years old and big. There's many varieties including some rare ones you can't find anywhere else. Amazing how a cemetery can be beautiful. It has maps available here or you can download one and it shows the places to check out. Went on an evening tour of the cemetery tonight and had the most fabulous time. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and engaging. He really made it a fun excursion. The scenery is breathtaking. We were there for two hours, but I could have spent days wandering this beautiful place. My favorite part of the tour was seeing the catacombs after dusk. Tickets were reasonably priced for the incredible experience. The mosquitos were the only drawback. I'd love to come in the fall when the leaves are changing. This place is located in Brooklyn, NY. You can take the N train to 36 street. It is a nice walk into the cemetery. It is very peaceful and beautiful. There is a pond of koi that you can go see. It is so beautiful. I always like to take walk there during Spring and Autumn. The trees change throughout the seasons. You can see cherry blossoms as well during Cherry Blossom season. I love cemeteries. I love exploring cemeteries. The bigger, the better. This one is no exception to the rule. I had been meaning to visit Green-Wood cemetery for quite some time. The history, the amount of famous internees here, the enormity of the grounds, all weigh in on why this is not just a park for the dead, but a place for all to visit and respect. Covering 478 acres, and bordering SIX Brooklyn neighborhoods (Park Slope, Sunset Park, Greenwood Heights, Kensington, Borough Park, and Windsor Terrace), it is impossible to cover it all in one day, at least if you want to do it right. Need a place to start? Start on the 20th street entrance (main entrance), and grab yourself a map. You will find yourself lost in the wonder and magic of the grounds quite quickly. Whether you want to see the Tranquility Garden (a section of the cemetery where cremated remains are interred, surrounded by koi fish), or walk the oldest grounds, there is something for all. As I mentioned before, lots of famous people are buried here. Athletes, movie stars, politicians, several of them are here. I cannot begin to name all of them, it would take me at least 2-3 days to do that. It can also be found elsewhere across the internet. It is easily accessible by subway for the folks like me who have no car. The D, F, G, N, and R trains all stop at nearby stations that are all walking distance to the cemetery. I will be returning here when the weather warms up. Maybe sooner. read more

Night tour: if this peaks your interest, then I guess we are like-minded, and therefore, you'll love it. The group left as the sun was beginning to set, and went on a 2 hour tour through the cemetary, mostly in the dark. It actually didn't seem like 2 hours, and was not tiring. The tour culminated in an exploration of a catacomb set into a hill. Bring a flashlight so you can have your cell free to take pictures. Also wear good shoes and be mindful of the pavement in the dark. It was entertaining and fun. I don't want to give away details, but there are lots of bits of colorful history that I enjoyed. Protip: There's a bathroom at the cemetary gates, and bring cash for tips for the guide. Btw, by the cemetary side of 4th ave, at the 25th St R entrance, there's a little Chinese dollar store with cheap and useful items. I found the lightest weight collapsible beach chair ever. It breaks down to the size of, idk, half the size, lengthwise, of a toaster oven. Very small and compact. And they have flashlights, cheap coconut water, and gatorade. read more

Our recent visits to Green-Wood Cemetery marked the first time I've visited a cemetery as a leisure activity. Green-Wood is beautiful and serene, and we saw many others during our visits enjoying a walk, or sitting by a pond or under a tree idling the day away. Logistics: Green-Wood Cemetery is an active, operating cemetery, so please be mindful of Green-Wood's visitor rules, which are posted on their website. Restrooms are available. Driving into the cemetery is allowed, with parking on roadsides -- but walking is just as nice, if not better. Consider wearing shoes with a good tread, as some paths may be steep or slippery. It was a picturesque autumn day and my daughter-in-law suggested, "Let's go to the cemetery." Instantaneously, my son and I replied questioning, "The cemetery?" She supported her suggestion, "Yes, they have a Mommie and Me walking tour." Since a happy wife means a happy life, we went along with her suggestion and were happy that we did. I have been to many cemeteries and never have I seen one so beautiful! The autumn colors added to the beauty. The entrance way has beautiful arches and at the top of one if the arches is a huge parrots nest. Apparently the parrots were once pets that were left free and they found their home at this cemetery and are thriving. They were flying all over the place. There is an area at the top of a hill where you can view Manhattan as well as the Statue of Liberty. We drove to the top and then just strolled around the area appreciating the beauty. We even looked up the price for a plot and were amazed to see that the cost was comparable to other cemeteries. The staff is very unhelpful to family members attempting to locate graves, providing only the general vicinity of the plot, and a single overly generalized map that does not show lot numbers. read more

It is a magnificent place to spend eternity or just a nice afternoon There are bike racks to lock up your bike enter the majestic entrance and look up as you do and look at the parrot condos nestled inside all the nooks of the archway - bring binoculars and watch the parrots Visit the koi pond , sit by the lake, visit the graves from the 1800s There is so much beauty and history here! Who would have known that a landmark cemetery in Brooklyn is also a renowned arborteum with a beautiful koi pond? Green-Wood sits on nearly 500 acres and is home to a flock of bright green parrots, old beautiful trees and large ornate mausoleums. After strolling around the well kept grounds and taking a trolley tour with the wonderful docent CJ, I picked up some interesting NY history and had a wonderful time. One feels far removed from the city here, although the Statue of Liberty in NY Harbor is clearly visible from the Minerva statue on a nice day. Many luminaries are at rest here including Leonard Bernstein and Boss Tweed, along with a few loyal dogs buried next to their owners. All rest together in harmony. Peaceful, eccentric, scenic, historic - just a few descriptors for this very special place. Highly recommended. read more

How do you even review such a place? Its Greenwood and its almost 200 years old. Everyones buried here from the rich and famous of its day to ordinary Brooklyn residents throughout time. Of course its a quiet place but really the sights are something to behold here. There are some amazing headstones here that are works of art. Some are really unique. The place is massive though and its easy to get lost in the place. Download a map if you plan to visit and remember to keep it respectful as its the resting spot for over 500,000 people. Definitely spend some time here. read more

There really is something here for everyone and it is free. If you love history it's here. If you love tranquil settings, it is also here. If you love views from up high, they have it here. And, if you love architecture and sculptures, they certainly have it here too. Even the maps are free. If you are looking for the graves of the famous and infamous, about a dozen are listed on the tourist map. We also asked for a map laying out the cemetery section by section and used it in conjunction with findagrave.com to locate everybody we were looking for. read more
