I was only in the Beer Cafe and not the museum or the brewery tour. This was after having a very nice half pint of Abbot across the road in The Dog And Partridge. It was fascinating to see the range of bottled beers in the shop and then the range of Greene King beers at the bar, many of which I had not seen elsewhere, some of which were trial beers. As one who generally prefers dark ales, I quickly latched on to the labels for trial Black IPA and trial Rye Beer, too fascinated by them to notice that they were not on hand pump. For the third beer in a tasting tray, I chose Rumrunner (rum-infused blonde). This turned out to be my favourite by far, simply because it was cask and had a nice, soft flavour, temperature and mouthfeel, just like that lovely half pint of Abbot across the road in The Dog And Partridge. The Black IPA and Rye Beer by contrast had a very hard mouthfeel and lack of flavour because of the chilling and carbonation etc which comes from being keg ales. Both of these had the potential to be really flavoursome if only they had been available as cask beers. Please do that! read more
