The owner is extremely knowledgeable, he explained the genesis of the India Pale Ale beer style, and made several excellent recommendations, including the appropriate chilled temperatures for each beer. If I hadn't been flying back to the US in a few days, I would have bought more than just the few bottles I did. Highly recommend!

He also provided us with details of all the bottles and lent us a book on what we were drinking. All the wine was organic and no-one had a hangover. Glasses were provided and also cleaned - no washing up is a huge bonus! Can fully recommend Smashing Wines.

They do however have a nice selection of beers you can buy here and a nice selection of gins - the Rising Sun was my favourite - a matcha and Lemongrass Gin that was fabulous. The service is good and if you ask they will let you taste some of the products in the shop. All in all a nice shop to drop in for a visit and pick up a thing or two. The brewery and distillery is located within a couple of hundred meters from the shop.

It was fascinating to see the range of bottled beers in the shop and then the range of Greene King beers at the bar, many of which I had not seen elsewhere, some of which were trial beers. As one who generally prefers dark ales, I quickly latched on to the labels for trial Black IPA and trial Rye Beer, too fascinated by them to notice that they were not on hand pump. For the third beer in a tasting tray, I chose Rumrunner (rum-infused blonde). This turned out to be my favourite by far, simply because it was cask and had a nice, soft flavour, temperature and mouthfeel, just like that lovely half pint of Abbot across the road in The Dog And Partridge. The Black IPA and Rye Beer by contrast had a very hard mouthfeel and lack of flavour because of the chilling and carbonation etc which comes from being keg ales. Both of these had the potential to be really flavoursome if only they had been available as cask beers. Please do that!

The menu is simple and I quickly decided on the goats cheese and caramelised onion pizza, which I shared with the other half; it arrived in good time, with an additional plate - when placing the order, my dad was asked how many people would be sharing each pizza, a clever touch, showing that they recognise what people might want. Of course, you're going to get a few flies and wasps, but it's worth it for a little bit of something different! Just don't look down, that sea looks awful choppy.

I have eaten here on 5-6 occassions and it has never failed to disappoint. There is a friendly, quaint atmosphere in the small venue, which seats only around 30-40 people downstairs. Being a family run, true Italian restaurant they take great pride in their food. The chef, Aldo, cooks using the freshest ingredients and will even do dishes to order if you give notice. Seafood is a speciality, and at a superb price too. The portions are equally good, with more than enough to fill you up. It astounds me that people buy into the fake, fast food, boil in the bag concepts of Strada and Ask, when there is quality across the street like this. Look out for this hidden jewel and try it!
