I've been to a many record stores and hands down this is my favorite place for vinyl and vibes. The owners are very knowledgeable and really cool, they answered all the questions I had and if we all didn't know they had a way to find out aka Google. I seen albums in this place that I'd never thought would be here. They are very meticulous, so you can be sure whatever you get is well taken care of so If you're thinking about visiting don't hesitate to stop in. This place also has a really nice community vibe you never know who's stopping by to share in the love of music and conversation about music. Decent selection and clean, nice stuff. After checking a couple of records i stopped checking, they are located where Vintage Vinyl WAS i guess, i thought the whole time i was there but actually here... Not really sure. The online sale section confuses me, i figured it would be better more popular stuff but it really just felt like a waste of time. I am a record enthusiast but would say that the selection was a little more than what you would find at the flea market. No Dead, no pink floyd, no John Pine, no Van Morrison, no early fleetwood mac, those were the things that i was looking for. Still i was able to get a couple other albums for $5 each that were a great value and would expect them to be $10-$15 each normally at any other record shop. STill i wont complain there was a lot and the prices were good, especially for the good condition. Guy was a little icy, reminded me of myself when i was younger, really no interest in talking to anyone and would rather just listen to as much music as possible, i browsed for about 20 minutes without him saying anything to me. When i did check out he didn't have much to say then either. Would come here again and look through what they have. read more

Nice little shop in the middle of downtown Greenfield. They have move to where Vintage Vinyl was. And only have records now. The shop is divided in half, with a staff area, and the showroom floor area. Most records are roughly alphabetized and categorized. There's 4 new bins on the end of the first long bin by the door. That and the Online bins seem to have some of the best and freshest stuff. The staff has always been friendly. They recently have gone to all paper bags over plastic. I have returned several times and with Scott the owner around, there is a great vibe. He is a very friendly guy who will happily engage you but is at the same time respectful of your browsing. Today, Scott basically offered up his entire stock of boxed classical and opera for FREE. Gotta tell you that this was overwhelming and generous. This is really a nice shop and I wish it was closer to me. I think the folks of western Mass should frequent John Doe Jr and keep it going strong. Thanks again Scott for your generosity! read more

There is more vinyl here than I have seen in one place in decades. The owner is very cool, their LPs are very nicely priced (I got some genuine steals). Like any used shop you have to pick through and inspect but I walked out there very satisfied. read more

This would normally be a four star offering for me, but being where it it is, it gets an extra star for being a crucial Western MA resource. Good selection, not great, but very good. The prices were pretty great. The condition was definitely above average for used records... and again, I was surprised by the range of genres among the LPs. Dropped about $30.00 on five records ranging from third tier 70s folk psych to early 80s UK punk/ska. Could have easily spent a couple of hours digging, but I didn't have the time. You really can't expect anything more out of a record store (lots of books/mags too) for this region. read more

There are basically two types of record sellers these days. One sells with the perspective of the buyer in mind. Their records are largely clean with only light signs of use, occasionally some light brush or a couple faint hairlines, often spotless. Maybe some light wear on the cover. Occasionally, they might have a popular or rarer record with a bit more action but always priced accordingly. The records look and smell clean, and they play well to great. In general, the prices are fair to the grade or slightly below and certainly below big city prices. This type of shop is great for all, but particularly for newer collectors who might not have as strong of a sense about the range of quality, grading and pricing. The other type of record seller basically sells with the subconscious angle of "how much can we get away with?" With so many new buyers, this other type will sell whatever they can at whatever price they can with no sense of responsibility or care for the buyer. Maybe they price the musty, trashed records relatively cheaply but it skips and is worthless. But where things get tricky is the borderline record that could appear okay in shadowy record-store lighting, the popular, would-be valuable record, Sgt. Peppers, Dark Side, with a split seam and significant wear only visible in good direct light, and they're still asking $10-$25 for what a more seasoned collector would notice is a quite well-used record. Maybe it plays okay if you're lucky, some static, a quick jump, and pops but listenable enough for the most part (and this is probably how they justify their own pricing.) Something that's listenable enough for the most part is not worth the same as if it were in nice condition. Condition matters, visually and aurally, for value. Basically, these stores are willing to sell Salvation Army records at record store prices. Who can blame them? We all get excited by cool records, but it doesn't mean they're worth much. I had to paint this picture. It's a crucial picture because John Doe Jr. is the first kind of record store. They're music lovers and love to see happy buyers. Buyers of any stripe can be sure they got a fair shake if not a good deal. It seems this kind of record store is becoming increasingly rare. Long live John Doe Jr.! read more

First thing I'd like to say Is that that owner didn't say hello, or even acknowledge my presence the ten minutes I was in his shop. Instantly put a bad taste in my mouth. Not that I needed help, but damn, I'm sure people aren't beating down his door with business. Records in my opinion were quite over priced. Selection was pretty bad too , a few thousand random rock records.. small jazz and classical section... I hit A, B, C & M and was over it by then. Unless you're going to Greenfield anyway, I would save your gas. read more

JDjr has been yet another fine addition to the recent cultural "evolution" of Greenfield. What at first glance seems like another store of generic books and records pays big rewards on deeper inspection. There are amazing records here and I always walk out with titles I have never seen before(and I have been collecting records a long time). Prices are ridiculously fair and even their higher dollar collector items are usually below market value! The proprietors are super nice and truly love music as fans..you will get zero attitude or vibe when browsing. Lots of other interesting ephemera on hand as well such unusual books, mags and videos.
