I recently adopted a special needs cat from the Ulster County SPCA. I was told he had a chronic…read morecondition of dermatitis. They said he sometimes marks out of the box & is very vocal. This was actually bc he had an unidentified bladder infection & was screaming/ crying in pain; that Hyde Park Animal Hopsital helped to promptly diagnose and save Loki's life! One night he started chewing on a plastic bag & I was terrified he injested some plastic. The next morning he began projectile vomiting & had been peeing everywhere. My cat is very anxious & sensitive to car rides or turbulence so my fear of having to drive 25 min to my usual vet seemed daring. Thankfully I found Hyde Park Animal Hospital and they are 6 minutes from me! I called immediately & was crying, frantic, & panicking I could hardly get out what I needed to say. The receptionist was so kind & told me to bring him right away. I rushed Loki there & they saw me promptly. The waiting room was extremely clean, brightly lit, & cheerful. Not that it really mattered in a frantic situation but it was nice. The vet tech was so nice & Loki was really afraid but seeemd to feel safe with her & hid in her jacket. This made me feel confident in the staff. The doctor did some blood work & an external exam but didn't find that he had injested anything. His bloodwork did identify that he had a HORRIBLE infection & was close to not making it! I was SO grateful they looked into this & found this out otherwise he wouldn't still be here! The only thing I didn't really appreciate was that the bill was astronomical (which I can understand bc procedures/ costs are typically very expensive) but the staff nor vet informed me of these costs BEFORE they administered the tests. It cost me upward of $1,000 but luckily my sister was able to help. They do work with you & have split payments which is helpful. I would have still moved forward with the suggested treatment despite the cost, but it would have been nice to know before they did them/ what that cost woukd look like. The Dr gave him an anti nausea shot + antibiotic shot just in case but had me do a urinalysis which identified a life threatening bladder infection a few hours later. I appreciated the quick lab process/ the prompt follow up call thet provided. Again, very kind & patient. It was after hours but the Dr called me personally as he was on the road & still gave me direction and info. Loki is doing very well now thanks to their care and concern. A few times he has tried to eat other things or his stool didn't seem normal, or I forgot what the medication schedule was, they always treated me with dignity & like a loving pet owner not an annoying pet mom who didn't know what she was doing. They even have overnight staff fyi. Plus they are open till 7 pm on weekdays and I work till 5 pm so this is really helpful. I like that I can come pick up his supplies whenever I need to within their hrs; no appointment necessary. They always call back & just have made this terrifying experience less painful for the both of us. I know I read some conerning reviews & if I had read them before I decided to visit I probably would not have gone. Am I glad I did? YES. TEN THOUSAND TIMES YES. I've now found my permanent vet and a new piece of mind. If I have any tips I would say just ask for prices before the exam and ask to see a draft of the bill if you do those procedures; this isn't the first time it's happened at a vet before so I know it's not just here. Thank you Hyde Park Animal Hopsital for saving my baby. I thank them every time and they laugh but it's really true!

The mentality of the staff is to allude you into thinking they are caring and sweet. Its really all about the money. My dear pet, my dog was brought here due to his being in great pain. My engine light was on, I did not know what was wrong. So I could not risk driving to our vet across the river. He was crying in pain throughout the previous night. My vet agreed that it was time given the condition of his issues. Ark was close, so I made the dreaded appointment. With the appointment I was made to wait for 40 minutes while my nervous dog, a rescue, was getting triggered by being in an unfamiliar place. He was becoming increasingly nervous. By the time we were admitted into the exam room. He was very churned up. I told the assistant that he was very nervous. She did not seem to understand why I was telling her this, the vet came in, not the vet I was told I would be seeing( an older woman) but a young woman. A very young woman. I told her my dog was very agitated, and she said she had the sedative with her, at which point she injected him in the spine from a standing position arching overhead. It seemed she was afraid of the animal and did the injection INTO THE SPINE. I would have thought she would be careful given the location but maybe not, given it was a euthanasia. Almost immediately my dog staggered, fell and began to thrash on the floor while crying. I am on the floor holding him so he does not smash his head, she is nowhere to be found. I am holding my poor boy, and FINALLY she shows up, and announcing the dog is having a bad reaction to the drug. She states she is going to get propofol. She comes in injects him in a vein in his inner thigh, and he begins to scream so loud I thought I would have a heart attack. She leaves again, I am going through hell with my poor boy who is being tortured to his death, not peacefully transitioned which is what we are there to accomplish. She comes back with the euthanasia drug and pushes it into the same vein as the propofol. He cries out, he is yelping, several minutes later he expires. Dr, LaMerta(sp)? announces, "he's gone". I was spent and traumatized. She completely botched his procedure. Propofol is not a reversal drug, which I was told should have been the direction she needed to go but she clearly did not know what to do. Her, choices were amateur. Beware of this place they are not who they would like you to believe.

Our daughter had the car, so I called Dr. Barbara MacMullan and she came over after she was done working her day job, at a local Vet's office. For $50 she did a full exam, weighed our cat, clipped his nails, examined his ears, eyes and mouth and talked to us at length about the options. We didn't want to lance the abscess because it was so close to the eye, so she prescribed amoxicillin. Two days later our cat was on the mend. We didn't have to take him anywhere! No stress. And a $10 savings from going to the Vet. A Vet who makes house calls is great. A Vet who makes thorough house calls and follows up is amazing. And Dr. MacMullan definitely falls into the latter category. :)

Talk about a new world! For the first time, my cat wasn't feral in the foyer or with any of the vets and staff at Rhinebeck Animal Hospital. The level of caring, compassion, knowledge, and experience by every one of the staff at Rhinebeck Animal Hospital is stellar. I realized what a sh*tshow Community Animal Hospital is in comparison! Customarily, my cat has to be sedated and contrary to Community Animal Hospital, it didn't take 1-2 days but 1-2 hours to recover. There's a lot more, especially paying 67% less on fees - the estimates were right on target unlike Community Animal Hospital which changes estimates on a whim. Most importantly, I was informed that my cat's lab work revealed a reversal of his kidney disease in the one year since he's been a patient at Rhinebeck Animal Hospital. That's not only a miracle, but a testimony to them!

The reception staff has noticeably become less friendly, and I've been waiting nearly two weeks for an important return call--with no response. Unfortunately, I've decided to move to a different vet. If you're considering this as your primary veterinary clinic, I'd urge you to factor in the long wait times (even during emergencies) and the inconsistent level of service. While many of the vets are excellent, not all are, and the overall experience has left me very disappointed.

I have no idea why someone as established as Mintzer Howard would employ such vicious and nasty woman. This review is not biased and I want to explain the events that lead to me leaving this bad review. And for the record I am not the only one venting about Nicole Peterson, just visit their Google Reviews page to find out. Our original encounter with his office manger Nicole Peterson was last month. Up until that point I thought I had a wonderful relationship with the hospital. They had cremated our first dog and did a full dental for my second dog. Just for context I wasn't just some crazy person walking off the street. We have spent thousands of dollars at Dr Howard's hospital to get the best care possible. From the start Nicole Peterson was rude, unapologetic, and short with us. And even though I didn't appreciate her bad attitude, we suffered her condescending tone so we could get the care we needed for our beloved pet. She agreed for us to come in for a visit for a check up so I can start my dog Max on heartworm medicine. My entire family heard her confirm this multiple times, because she was on speaker phone for everyone to hear. The only reason she was on the speaker phone was so they could bare witness to how awful I was being treated. Well it turned out I was allowing myself to be treated like dirt for nothing, because Nicole Peterson never documented our pre-arranged meeting. She not only denied talking with us previously, she was also completely unprofessional with the way she was talking with us. We asked to talk to Nicole's supervisor and she told us if we weren't comfortable with Nicole's treatment of us that we shouldn't come back. At any point they could of just apologized and it would all be under the bridge. I don't take any pleasure in leaving a negative review. This is my first time going out of my way to document a business like this. This review is for all the animal lovers who value their pets like their own children. While I enjoyed my brief time with the staff up until that point, I have to wonder how they treat my animal when I am not around to observe what is happening. After all it seems like Nicole Peterson's actions were covered up and her bad behavior was overlooked. If it is acceptable to talk to a client who has been visiting them for some time, then how do I know they aren't treating my animals the same? I don't know if the owner Dr Howard is aware of Nicole Peterson's ongoing poor behavior. I pray for the animals he is in charge of that he is not. Because then there Is hope he may do something about her attitude problem. I also hope that someday soon he is made aware before Nicole Peterson upsets more patients and clients any further. After all there are plenty of other vets for my dogs to go to, at least now they are somewhere where the staff treats us with the empathy my animals deserve!

I asked how much it cost, and she said $100.00 per vial. I told her I cannot afford that once a week which would have been what she would need. When I told her I couldn't afford the insulin and would she please write out a script for the Walmart insulin which many Veterinarians will use for dogs and the cost is $25.00! She said "If you can't afford it maybe you should give her to someone who can afford it". She was very rude. The following visit I saw a tech. He checked her blood sugar and it went up rather than down. He literally told me off! I walked out after three hours of Dr. Alden calling places to provide one time charity for me to get insulin for my dog. Without my permission or my asking. After that waiting time for nothing, I left the office crying. When I got out to my car, two emplyees came to my car before I got out of the parking lot to sign paperwork which basically said I will not hold them responsible should something happen to my dog. At that point I didn't care what they did with their damn papers. I signed them and told them I will not be back. I said perhaps Dr. Alden should know a persons history before judging. My husband and I had gotten our dog together and could afford everything for her. My husband died young 4 months later. I was a young widow and trying my best to help my baby girl who I loved to death. Instead of asking how can I help, She insisted i buy the expensive insulin. I never took my dog back there again. Jad Dr. Alden started her on the other much cheaper brand of insulin, she would have been fine. Instead my dog suffered for 8 months and was on 80 units of insulin a day and costing me $400.00 a week. That drained my saving account, and did nothing to lower my dog's blood sugar. She went blind over night, she died 8 months later. I did my part, She failed my 8 year old lab and me. I have no respect for anyone in that office. I highly recommend you stay away from them unless you want to lose all of your money and your pet.
