The beauty of therapy is that we can see different kinds of therapists. She was not the type for…read moreme, but she might be for you! Laura fell asleep in several of our meetings. It was awkward because she would apologize to me at the next meeting saying she had fallen asleep on another client... etc etc... it felt like some sort of gaslighting like she was apologizing because she knew it was me, but didn't want to admit it. I wanted to talk about my past traumas and what I had experienced. How can she help me if she has no idea what has happened to me? Most of her sessions were guided by her (she speaks 80% of the time), but did not allow me to speak very much. I never really felt like I could express myself and I think for her, that wasn't the point. Like I said, this might work for you, but it didn't work for me. I always felt like she didn't care to hear me... and I don't just mean my story, but I felt like she didn't care to "hear" me and really hear my feelings, who I am and how I have come to be. I always believed she just talked so that she didn't fall asleep... I really needed to talk about the trauma I had experienced and how I felt scared. Did I need to call the police? Will this partner hurt other people? How scared should I be? Should I move? Should I change my locks? This was not an option with her... with her often saying "you're not ready" and refusing to move on to new subjects/asking me to pay more money for more sessions when she knew I didn't have it. When I talked too much about my experience she would would tune me out. I was never able to talk about how my partner talked about killing me and how I felt scared. I could never talk about the numerous threats that happened, she didn't want to hear this. She is the kind of person where you could walk in and say "I am a gay" and she would never want to hear your story, she'd never want to know about your traumas, never hear what has hurt you, never hear about your family/friends/relationships, she just wants to say ok, moving forward this is what I want you to do... Her guidance is largely spiritually based on her own beliefs... there is no room for you to talk, only feel. When I told her I could not pay weekly because I couldn't afford it, she said "I have bills too" and told me I had to come in anyway. She wasn't even willing to see me every other week. She also had no problem telling me what my weaknesses were. Most sessions were spent with her explaining why particular things in my life had happened to me and that most of them were my fault. There is no space for empathy here... if you want to talk about your story and have someone say I'm sorry this happened, this is how you move on... this is not the person. Laura is more... I don't care what happened and if you tell me I'm going to tell you why it's your fault and then we'll move on in the way that makes sense to me and maybe not to you.. If you want someone who will assume you've had some kind of trauma and just moves passed it without allowing you to talk about it, she is the one for you.

I went through separate stretches of time seeing Brien and then later Evonne. I've seen other therapists that kinda sucked and felt like money down the drain, but Brien and Evonne were both articulate in their feedback and guidance. The grief was disabling during the day also and I was unable to work or do day-to-day tasks, my mind was reeling. I knew there was no way I could do years of counseling to get through it, I needed something fast to help me return to normal life. I called ECC and asked Melanie what she could do to help heal me to accelerate the process of trauma, and get results and relief fast. She introduced me to EMDR and Matrix Reimprinting. I had never heard of such a thing and didn't know the technology behind them , and truly thought they sounded like a waste of time and would not work. But I was desperate. After learning how they work on the brain and body and the historical proven results, I gave them a try. Much to my surprise I was shocked to see that not only did they work but they gave fast results and relief to my grief and pain and reeling thoughts that would not stop.
