This review is less about the bakery, and more about their award winning pie
Feeling like I'm a pretty big fan of pies and recalling they won the Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Award, a recent thread here on yelp reminded me I need to go check the pie out.... after all Botany is my local!
First impression the place is not as nice as Ronnies (100m around the corner) as far as cattle class cafes go... the decor is far more plastic tray and RSA feeling. So I ended up grabbing a pie and sitting outside... but the outlook is the carpark.
The service is pretty vacant and minimal. The counter staff was fast, efficient with no small talk or a smile.
The pies didn't even look as good as BP station pies... it was more in the class of a 4 square pie warmer at 6pm on a Sunday afternoon. So I was praying the filling would blow me away. I went for a basic mince and cheese... which was $5.
The filling is nice but McDonalds Georgie pie comeback is way better, the crust is light and flakey and buttery but its not as good as Muzza's (in Howick and Mt Albert)... at least the temperature was spot on, and it wasn't greasy so I didn't feel that sense of regret after eating it.
Should anyone be saying this is the best pie in Auckland? no... not by a long shot... maybe in a different filling... but like for like... this Mince and cheese isn't even close. Its certainly not gourmet looking but the price tag is almost there. read more
