Seedy in a "This-is-an-old-gaming/sports-bar" kind of way and you get what you see. Located on the corner of Newton Rd and Symonds St, I have often passed but never entered. Inside is a clean, if dated, bar which is surprisingly spacious. There is plenty of seating, an outdoor courtyard, a pool table and, the pièce de résistance, a pinball ball machine. Oh, so it's old and sticky and needs to be plugged in via an extension cord to the kitchen. The entire reason this pub exists is to drink cheap booze and get rowdy, not to worry about the decor and Instagramming plates of food. Edinburgh Castle is a pub for sports fiends and pokie players (generally over 40).

I'm not sure whose idea this was - the place doesn't exactly scream "lovely place for a dinner innit?" They have free pool nights on mondays which is pretty cool . Their happy hour specials are great, and it's not a bad place to come and sink a few for a couple of hours. But it's no nightlife hotspot.

Price was under $100 USD per night, so I thought that price point was reasonable for me to stay here for a night before heading to Tauranga for the weekend in mid September 2018. Upon arrival, the building looked very brand new or at least refurbished in a major way. It seemed like a good idea at the time and I was satisfied to stay here at the Haka hotel in Newmarket. For the most part though, I felt reasonably safe and the location was good. The Haka Hotel is a 2 or 3 star hotel with the basic amenities. For me, I just needed a comfortable bed and a safe place to spend the night, which Haka hotel delivered in gold stars. The check in process was nice and the lobby seemed small, but luxurious. While I can say that it was definitely not the Hyatt or the Hilton - or even any high end American hotel brand, I had a good stay here and would look at coming back here to stay, if my travels permit me to do so. While it would have been nice to use the business center during my stay, the WiFi in my room was adequate to keep myself busy while watching television for the night of my stay. I must admit that it was a nice quiet stay and got in about 8 hours of sleep that night. No paper thin walls here, like how people talk about. Just a good stay here at the Haka Hotel in New Zealand. The overall experience here at the Haka Hotel was good, fun, and simplistic. Although there wasn't really any significant central air conditioning in the building, it was comfortable enough to enjoy the room for the night. The check out process was quick and painless, just need to give them the key and you're good to go - assuming you gave them your credit card upon check in. The service was friendly, quick, and professional. The hotel itself seemed like a legit hotel, although it doesn't seem to have that much rooms in its inventory. I would say around 100 rooms in 4 stories. The Haka hotel is located at 9 Manukau Road in Auckland's Newmarket district. They accept major credit cards, as most do in the industry, so that's a plus. Since I arrived here on foot from Auckland's bustling central business district, I don't know how the parking situation is at the hotel, although private parking for guests is assumed. There is also street parking wherever available and the location is away enough from downtown Auckland for enough privacy and comfort you may come to enjoy while staying in the area. I know I certainly did. For the most part though, one night here in Newmarket at the Haka hotel was good enough to recharge myself after a day of travel from Christchurch. The room itself was albeit small but comfortable, almost like a small private dormitory. The room was clean and didn't seem as small as it looks. You can move around and it was cozy and enough living space to do whatever you want. The television in the room works, as did everything else in the room. The bed was comfortable, as mentioned before. It felt like sleeping in your own home, versus a straight up hotel room. It just felt like that, based on the ambiance. I wished that I used more of the hotel's amenities during my stay, but it was just a quick stay that was nice. Nice and comfortable. Made me want to come back soon for another visit, if my travels permit me to do so. I would recommend coming and staying here, just because the location is off the beaten path, safe, and away from Auckland's urban sprawl. The prices are reasonable and the neighborhood is nice too. The Haka Hotel is In striking distance from the city and in between anywhere you need to go. The parking is a bit cramped and limited, but I didn't have any issue finding a spot. The manager was very nice and accommodating! My room was clean, and though small, did not feel restrictive. It was functional and well-appointed. Excellent wifi. My only complaint was theroom was very hot when I got in there and w/no A/C it took a while to cool down w/the open window and included fan. The shared bath was right next to my room and was very clean and roomy and had nice provisions, including a hair dryer. There was an included continental breakfast, nothing fancy, toast & coffee and cereal, so it was adequate. Check out was a breeze. For the price point, a nice place to stay in Auckland, especially since it was pretty on/off the highway to downtown.
