Full review: My partner had recommended Greenleaf to me and I was excited to find an appointment with the owner Kelly before a stressful event I have coming up. I indicated on the form that I preferred mild to moderate pressure since I was a new client and didn't know what to expect. Everyone's experience of what pressure they like is different and communication is key. Once the service started, I asked for deeper pressure like she and the paperwork asked me to do. On the first request I asked for moderate pressure because that's how the form described the pressure after 'mild'. She seemed annoyed, saying "I don't know what that means." I apologized and said, "I think an increase in pressure is okay." On the second request, she stopped abruptly and said, "look, I'm not going to give you everything I've got. I have like four more clients after you." I felt extremely vulnerable and stayed silent for the rest of the service. I tipped 25% and left feeling more stressed than when I arrived. Needless to say, I won't be returning or referring. My partner was shocked she spoke to me that way and does not plan to return or refer moving forward. I have been coming to green leaf for a few years now and it has a very cozy feel. The staff makes me feel like family and Elizabeth gives the best deep tissue massages (the kind that hurt so good). She uses unscented oil/body butter and it doesn't leave residue on my clothes afterwards. The tables can be heated and they play soothing music, it is all very relaxing. I have only seen one other masseuse but they each have different specialties so you are sure to find what you need. This was a business I have frequented over the past six months and have always been treated fairly by all the employees until today. Rather than greeting me, the owner Kelly, treated me as if I was soliciting even though I had a scheduled appointment. She was unaware of what type of massage I booked online and spoke to me in a condescending tone that was not conducive for a positive customer experience. I had a deep tissue massage here years ago. I had a Younger massage therapist. It wasn't a bad Massage, but I don't feel it was worth $70. The massage itself felt like what I would get at one of those membership chains. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't really very good either. It was not a deep tissue either. She did however asked me if the pressure was good and I did let her know that she could apply deeper and harder pressure. She tried to play a little deeper pressure, but it wasn't that significant and I didn't feel any less stressed or relieved of tension afterwards. Essentially felt about the same. I realize that the price of a massage doesn't always guarantee that you'll get a great massage. I don't think it was bad, but it wasn't what I expected or wanted. read more

I tried Myoskeletal Alignment Therapy (MAT) about 18 months ago after years of neck pain without relief. This was my Hail Mary, as I had utilized many massages, multiple rounds of physical therapy, and ongoing chiropractic care without fully eliminating the pain. Prior to the onset of the pain I was pretty active and afterwards could not engage in once-loved activities without hurting. Kelly was honest in that this would not be a one time fix. I attended biweekly sessions for several months and then moved to monthly/every six weeks once I began working out again. I'm running regularly again, which I never thought I'd be able to do a year ago. I can't recommend MAT (and Kelly) enough. read more

I have been going to Greenleaf for over 10 years and they literally changed my life. I was in an auto accident in 1999 and suffered injuries requiring a cervical spinal fusion surgery. Afterwords I went to physical therapy, the only relief I got was from the 10 minutes of "massage" they gave me. But I was still lacking in any range of motion and still very tense. The room was dark and cute and a typical massage room for me but I guess everyone has different experiences! Tyra worked on me and when I say worked, she worked! For me to really enjoy my deep tissue massages, I need firm pressure and Tyra did just that. She also gave me helpful tips at the end of the session. I came here today for the first time looking for a great massage and I was not disappointed! Other reviewers had recommended Elizabeth and luckily I was able to book an appointment with her for the next day. For some reason, my gps took me to the west end of nine mile (they are located on the east end!). When I called for location clarification, the people at the front were so kind and told me where they were located and to just take my time (I probably sounded frazzled knowing I was going to be a couple minutes late at this point). Once I found the place, I was greeted so warmly. I filled out my information and was taken back by Elizabeth. She asked what I was looking for out of my massage and if I had anything I wanted her to focus on. She also made sure to ask if I had any place she should avoid (new tattoos, rashes, etc) I've had maybe a handful of massages in my life, and this was by far the best. I had an amazing experience here. I was concern about parking since the location is in Ferndale. However, there is a parking lot right in front of their office. & for 1 hour and 15 minutes it was like 75 cents. Not bad at all. The staff was friendly. I bought a Groupon for a 60 min deep tissue massage. Rachel was my masseuse. The music was relaxing and the massage table is heated. I felt like I died and went to heaven. I was so relaxed the entire day after my massage. Rachel definitely helped me get rid of all of the knots in my back. I have scoliosis, so these massages are necessary for my survival. Credit where credit is due. After a very bad experience during a very bad week a few months ago, I thought I wouldn't come back. However, they did give me a gift certificate for what happened and today I decided to give Greenleaf another try. I had a fantastic massage with Rachel. She is STRONG -- which for me is a good thing because I like deep pressure. And no scheduling snafus this time! Only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that the reservation system is still behind the times -- it'd be nice to be able to see which therapists are available on which days. However, I did hear that they're going to be moving to a web-based reservation system -- very excited to hear that! tl;dr version: I gave it another shot and it was good. Last week I enjoyed my first ever actual massage. I searched around on Yelp to find one that could accommodate at a later time in the evening due to my work schedule and stumbled upon GreenLeaf Bodywork. What a wonderful find it was. Parking was fairly straight forward, as I parked across the street in the public lot. Upon first entry into the venue, it was calming and warming. It wasn't busy up front and I filled out my new client paperwork while the in house dog came up to me and allowed me to pet him/her(I think the dog was a she named Sphinx). Very calm and friendly dog so nothing to worry about I'd say. It was almost like it was planned, as I finished the paper work, Sophia walked up and I was ready to go. A quick trip to the restroom before hand and then I was instructed on how things will go and what to expect. She made sure I was okay with the scented oil and that if I had any requests just to mention them or ask. From start to finish, the entire process was seamless and easy. Though I know I have difficulty fully relaxing my body, I seemed to be able to relax much more than normal. Sophia was able to work out a lot of the knots in my upper back and shoulders and allowed for much greater movement and flexibility in those areas. After everything, there was brief discussion on what I should work on and what will help reduce the knots down the road. At time of payment I was told I could prepay for another session with the same price, so of course I did, and I look forward to setting up that next massage soon! Can't wait! im 31 and this is my third massage, ever. So, i found this place via groupon & decided to indulge because i had been experiencing really bad upper back pain. I was lucky enough to have autumn as my masseuse. she was so sweet and tailored the massage to what i wanted/needed. She checked in with me 1-2 times during the massage to make sure that she was using just the right amount of pressure. When i asked her to turn it up a notch, she somehow knew the perfect amount of pressure to apply. She tailored conversation to my hints- so whenever i started it she continued, otherwise she just let my mind relax. One star off only for the way the studio is. So, the room was small, but i think comparable to other places ive visited. But room was too close to the reception/waiting room. So, while for most of my massage i was able to zone out because the music was loud enough, i was still able to hear things like the occasional floorboard creak, or someone banging something- which startled me enough to feel my muscles tense up. Again, this didn't ruin my experience, but it wasn't ideal. However, despite the ambiance hick ups, this place will be on my radar. My back feels a TON better. I received my first prenatal massage from Angelina, she is a trained prenatal specialist. I got there a little early so I had time to get comfortable and ask any questions I may have, since I have only ever received sports and relaxation massages prior to this visit. Angelina made me feel very comfortable and answered all the questions I had before I even had a chance to ask them. She was kind and explained everything as she went. The massage table was a regular one but with the addition of a body pillow and head pillow so you can lay on your side. You rotate to the other side of the body pillow half way through the massage. Boy did I need that! So much tension had already built up in my shoulders and lower back, and she did such an amazing job. I felt safe and comfortable and already bought 4 more prenatal massages! I've used multiple therapists here and have had great massages each time. I always do a 60 minute deep tissue massage, but they also do hot stone massage, prenatal, reiki, shiatsu and Thai massages. You can even get a couples massage. They offer Saturday and Sunday hours (which is downright unheard of!) and are open until 8 pm Monday - Friday. After a couple weeks of being sore, I finally came to realize that I needed a massage. Thanks to the yelpers and your awesome reviews I booked a session with Greenleaf Bodywork. And it was the best massage I've ever gotten. The atmosphere is relaxing. Nothing crazy, just how you would expect a massage place to be: quiet, darkish, aromatic and private. As soon as Gina started with my shoulders she knows that I've been on the computers a lot and I'm extremely right handed. She worked out every knot on my shoulders and my back. All of a sudden i just felt like, the weight off my shoulders are gone. I also asked Gina to work on my knees, which by the way, you can ask them to work on specific areas. My knees would always feel jammed every time I run on the treadmill. And Gina basically just pushed my whole leg back to where it should be. I never expected anything like that from a massage. It's a bit of extreme. But in my case, it was everything I needed. "Now it's time for you to come back to earth, which is the worst part of the massage", said Gina. And indeed it was. Coz in my ultimate dream world, I'll always have somebody like Gina massaging me 24/7. If you have a birthday coming up, they'll also knock 10 dollars off. Awesome!! I was hesitant to buy/use a Groupon for Greenleaf since I love Essential Massage so much, but I'm definitely glad I tried it! Greenleaf is a relatively small, very clean massage studio on 9 Mile in Ferndale. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by a smiling receptionist who handed me some paperwork to fill out. Once I was done with that, my masseuse took me to my room for the massage. What I liked about Greenleaf more than anything, even Essential, is that she asked me what my problem areas were and if I wanted her to focus anywhere. Since I'm an office monkey who sits at a computer all day, I asked for my back, shoulders, and arms only. I'm so glad!! Usually they spend half the massage rubbing my legs (even when I tell them I want them to focus on my back/shoulders) which I don't dig, so I was really happy she asked and listened. Another thing I liked is that this chick really used pressure!! Like to the point that I'm sore today, one day afterwards. She worked every knot she found, stretched my arms out, and generally made me feel super relaxed. This is the first massage where one hour was actually enough because she did it right! I'm usually left wishing it had been longer since they missed this knot or that spot etc. Finally, when I was leaving, she pulled me aside and said she wanted to talk to me. "Oh great," I thought. "Now she's going to try to sell me another session..." WRONG! She just told me that she worked as an accountant for years and knows how damaging it can be to your back, and she showed me some stretches I could do to help reverse the damage! Awesome service. I received a gift and enjoyed a massage here with Keith back in April. I enjoyed it so much that I prepaid at the end of my 1st visit for a 2nd massage to be scheduled at my leisure. I had almost forgotten about it and called to inquire about availability with Keith. The very pleasant lady that answered my call explained he had availability that same weekend! How exciting especially because of the tense muscles in my neck and back. I arrived early for my appointment on the 28th of October as suggested and upon arrival instead of being greeted by the receptionist she simply stated, "you can have a seat, I'll check you in." A few moments later Keith greeted me and provided an absolutely wonderful and relaxing massage. He then walked me out front gave me a cup of water and told me to have a great day. As I was leaving the receptionist who was on a call and had approximately 3 clients in her waiting area decided to RUN after me yelling, "wait! You haven't paid you can't just run out on a massage and not pay!" Needless to say I was embarrassed! She's yelling on 9 mile that I'm running out without paying. I go back in and explain to her that I've prepaid for services. She then proceeds to call me by the wrong name and says, no you owe $125. Well the name she calls me just happened to be the lady standing nearby in the lobby. I then give her MY name and she says I don't see that you prepaid. I explain that it has to be in there becausr when I scheduled the appointment the lady that scheduled me saw it and said that my services for today were paid in full. We went back and forth briefly with me informing her of the date and time in which I scheduled my appointment before she says," just don't worry about paying then have a good day". L. O. V. E. Clearly, I truly am head-over-heels in love with this place. Folks here definitely know what they are doing, and they do it well! Every massage therapist I've seen here has been highly skilled and talented in their technique. Of course, I have preferred some massage therapists over others. Most recently, I saw Kailyn who is now my new personal hero. That girl is a champ when it comes to knots and kinks! Booking is fairly easy and I think they are open seven days a week. I typically will go during the week for a quieter experience. Prices are pretty standard for massages and treatments in the metro-D. If you're lucky, you might catch a deal or special on their facebook page. Or even a groupon, which is the ultimate score with this place. Nice thing is that they aren't frou-frou in their approach or environment. The place clean, simple, but warm and inviting at the same time. Never have I had a less than stellar experience here. I purchased a groupon for this place and I should have noted the emphasis on body "work". This was not a typical massage by any means but rather a body work exercise complemented by massage therapy. The evening of my massage I was a bit unhappy as I wanted a more simple rub down with good, firm pressure and some aromatherapy lotion perhaps with some zen music playing. However, over the next few days the benefit of my experience became evident and I definitely felt less tension in my physical body. When I am in need of a a true body work massage for tension and pain, this will be my destination. However, when I want a cutesy rub down for mental relief, I will probably go elsewhere because this is a place of physical transformation not of romanticized frilly massages. read more

This was first time with christina--great energy from the start. not sure how new (or not?) she might be, but she's got a bright future in the biz. went in on day 3 of sinus slag-headed-ness, feeling like a soup bowl. explained this to her, so the focus was head and reflexology related to sinus. after an hour, there was nothing! no pressure, no pain, no clouds. she confidently explained a few things to me at the end of the massage related to sinus relief. it is now the day after, and the massage still passed the test as I woke with still! no headache! don't be fooled by the "casual" look of the place, and maybe the table wasn't optimal comfort. but i am left forever pleased with my trial experience at greenleaf for sure! read more
