And I can continue to quote much chapter and verse of this posthumous writing as the writing is near and dear to my heart - the gallantry shown at Fort Christina and more, the true founders of New York and I wish the good Peter Styversant were here today to drop a heap of learning about America on you who don't understand not just NY history, but America! Love it or be gone. Arriving at 5:45, I hadn't inquired as to what time the first tee ball hits the air, turns out it's about 8:00am. So I practiced my sneaky bump and runs, flips and flops and Texas toe downs. And player worth his salt has to know a multitude of great escape shots. So I lead the field being put out as a single with twins and fours amassing behind me and being 2 years removed from the short grass (due to injuries) I was a bit nervy on the 1st tee, nobody knew who I was, everyone else knew each other. Fortunately I ripped a low 3 iron cut stinger and I was off, still walking and carrying my bag, adding layers and subtracting layers as it was nippy in the mountains. I love the classic shallow and square bunkering design originally popular with architecture from the 20's and 30's. The greens rolled true but I couldn't buy a putt, not much break out there and putting off the second collar is doable. The fairways were in the shape to be expected for early season golf, what I should have done was pay closer attention to the unseen creeks that protected some greens and ran out along the sides. But I was the first player and I needed to set a good pace out there. Overall, the course played extremely fair, I can't give the staff enough credit for such fine service for me, attentiveness and extremely friendly.

Rip Van Winkle holds a special place in my heart…read more Not only is it the closest golf course to my parents' home and as such the place where I've golfed the most in the past decade (not saying much), but it's also the first place my brother, my father and I played after my father went through some very serious medical issues. We weren't entirely sure if he would ever be able to play golf again, so it was an amazing feeling to get out and hit a few balls with him last year. My father is doing much better now (physically at least, not that much better at golf), and so we try and get out whenever possible. This adds up to a couple times a year here when I'm in town, and accordingly, I am very, very bad at golf. Please believe that no one is mistaking Rip Van Winkle for something that belongs on the PGA Tour. When Greene County hasn't gotten enough rain, you may see a few brown spots out there. It's only nine holes, and generally pretty flat. However, it's an accessible, family-run place that I feel lucky to be able to play. It's affordable (kids play free too), and has my kind of casual vibe. I love that if I forgot to pack a collared shirt, they don't hassle me. My dad says the owner John is a great guy, and I like that his teenage son is often riding around tidying up the course. It's a true family biz. They do a good job too; the greens are well-maintained, the mountain backdrop is gorgeous, and you can't be sad about any day you spend trying to knock a little white ball around a beautiful grassy area. I suppose I can be sad about how poorly I do it, but I'm pretty happy here overall.

My husband and I had our wedding reception at the Country Club of Pittsfield this past December…read more(Saturday the 10th) and it was absolutely wonderful!! Rebecca Maaia was amazing to work with. Right from the beginning she helped coordinate everything - she answered all of our questions and organized a tasting. We had a lot of dietary restrictions at our wedding (gluten free, dairy free, vegans, vegetarians, severe peanut and shellfish allergies...) and they accommodated every single food request we had. Rebecca made herself available for many many meetings with myself and my mother to discuss all the details prior to the wedding day. Because the wedding took place in December, it was decorated for Christmas since the Country Club was hosting a member's brunch with Santa the day after the wedding. Prior to decorating, Rebecca asked if it was OK for all the Christmas decoration to be up for the wedding and if there was anything she could do to coordinate the decorations with the colors we'd chosen for the wedding. I was SO HAPPY she asked. Our colors were white and gold so she decorated the club with the most gorgeous Christmas decorations to match the theme. It was absolutely stunning and I loved it. The food was also incredible. We had prime rib with horseradish sauce, chicken, and salmon. They were all extremely delicious. And the salad was spectacular. The guests kept coming up to us afterward and telling us how outstanding the food was. I highly recommend the club for any event! They are organized, professional, and your event will exceed all of your expectations!

Now how on earth am I the first to review this place? Oh well, here goes. For starters, some…read moredisclosure: I'm not a member there. Went this past weekend for a wedding. (Not mine.) It reminds one of the Mashomack hunt club - if it were transported 100 miles north, plunked into suburbia, and catered to well-off golfing corporate types instead of wingshooting hedge fund billionaires and old money. The building itself is old and gracious, the staff thoughtful and understated, the vibe fairly 1%. Food surprisingly good, decent wine, lovely cake, and a pretty vista. Are those rooms one might sleep in up there on the second deck? How awesome if so -- you could tie one on at the reception, insult the bride's mum, take a punch from her pa, drop trou on stage with the best man and moon the dancing crowd, have a whiz off the patio by the flickering light of a gas fire, pass out face-down in the lap of a panicked flower girl, and be heaved unconscious into a guest bed upstairs by the club manager and the groom's cousin who played high school football. (I did none of those things, more's the pity. But I did get my bottom pinched by the superannuated and superinebriated wife of the family lawyer while in line for coffee - which family, still not sure. Thrill of the evening for boring old me.) Four stars for a very memorable, high-class, good-natured fun time; not five because - well, because it's not Mashomack.

Reviewing BHCC for their function hall/wedding accommodations. We recently got married here (on…read more9/15). From start to finish, throughout the planning process, I have to say that everything here went perfectly. Lori, their function coordinator/event planner/savior, is a godsend. She is so accommodating, flexible, patient, and organized, I couldn't have dreamed of working with anyone better. She knew what questions to ask, just anticipated our every need. We only had to meet with Lori once, in order to finalize all the little details. She is a true professional, and I can't even imagine how things would have turned out without her. The space itself is also beautiful. Having grown up in Pittsfield, I tend to take for granted the hills, foliage, and overall beauty of the area. The building itself is new (within a few years), with super high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a great deck off the back, overlooking the golf course and mountains. I think the food was good, I barely had time to eat, as we were making table visits for much of dinner. Friends and family told us it was all good though. There was never a long line at the bar, and the staff working the wedding were always around if anyone needed anything. I would highly recommend BHCC to anyone planning a wedding out in Western MA. While not the most luxurious place in the area, what you get for your money just can't be beat. They do tend to book well in advance, so take that into consideration when deciding.
