If you quickly pass the sign of the club, you will miss it. The entrance is a short alley way that leads you to the parking lot of the club. Surprisingly enough, it was huge! Who knew this was tucked in away behind ordinary strip malls. Though I did not get a complete tour of the club, I noticed multiple tennis courts, swimming pool, kids playground and the clubhouse where I was for an event. During the event, a hearty breakfast was served and there was ample seating inside and outside. The staff is very attentive and is very experienced the set-up for different types of events. Though I'm not a member here, but I have enjoyed attending events here and have never been dissatisfied with the level of service I received.

Another attraction is that this park provides the set up for many cross country meets. But myself, I do not really use any of the above however I am aware that the above described attractions are available. My use of Highland is the tennis courts which most of the courts having been resurfaced within the last 2-3 years. There are plenty of courts here---17 to be exact-- plus some kiddie/ youth courts for beginners new to the game. The tennis center also provides you the opportunity to get your racquet restrung or take lessons---individual or group. The instructors at Highland are great at what they do! There are so many women's teams that they split it up between day and night leagues. Not as many men playing, but still quite a few. This facility has been going through some renovations over the year and is finally, completely, open. The pro shop is really just an area to buy balls and hang out until your match if you're averse to the outside (why are you playing tennis, then?). They have rackets and other stuff for sale, but the selection isn't stellar. It IS clean and comfortable. The courts have a decent surface and are much better than other locations in town. I'm not a fan of the lighting situation here. The lights on the far courts are low so the ball disappears during your opponent's toss or when lobs are attempted. There are about 19 courts and a Round Robin every Saturday (unless there's a tournament going on), so feel free to try your hand. The Round Robin is fun if you're not too competitive. There tends to be a lot of beginners scattered about, so you never know what your competition is going to be. Overall this is a good facility with a LOT of courts. They don't sell beer...yet, but the BREC board has approved the sale of booze at the parks, so maybe soon.

Capital Tennis Center is smaller than the other 3 tennis centers as it only has 7 tennis courts while the others have a minimum of 11 tennis courts --other than that, the procedures are the same--you can reserve courts in advance, or simply walk up and pay, there are at times individual and group lessons as well a ball machine available for rent. This location does have additional traffic for the worker as there's more non tennis foot traffic using the restrooms, water fountain and purchasing water and snacks but at the present time, the condition of courts and overall lighting makes the tennis courts at Capital One Tennis Center the best in comparison to independence, forest and highland. The staff at this location is polite and respectful.

Independence park is located where the old airport was located and the indoor courts were constructed in the hangar area and as such there is a low ceiling for those who like to lib the ball. The indoor tennis courts were recently redone and as such are in the best shape it's ever been. The outdoor courts are lined up two within a fence with one set of 3. Each of the tennis courts have benches for the players. There is no water. Also, for the spectator, there are benches near each court which makes it pleasant and somewhat easy to view. In addition to the tennis courts, in this area are meeting rooms which the public may use.

The courts were resurfaced, I guess, mid-last year. While a vast improvement from their previous state, the base of the courts is still in pretty lousy shape. There are quite a few spots where there are cracks or divots that could easily change the trajectory of the ball...unless it's me hitting it, which would result in the ball burying itself in the ground until friction of the surrounding pavement and consequential hole gravel eventually bring the ball to a stop somewhere near the earth's core. (um, that was a joke, I'm really a humble guy...I mean, some of my best friends are me) There are a lot of courts and they have a croquet field and shuffleboard, but the court conditions are really not perfect. One set of courts seems to be on a slope, so you're either serving uphill or downhill. Barely noticeable...but noticeable. It's close to my house, so I'll keep coming.

Since then another fitness club (Crunch) opened up in the Hammond Aire shopping center, and I needed to rejoin a gym to get my health back in order. Visited both gyms, pricing for both basic and extended services very similar. The new Planet Fitness location was spotlessly clean (especially the bathroom and shower area) & the equipment looked fairly new. I was familiar with most of the machines, but was pleased to see that the massage chairs had been upgraded and now not only massages your back and legs but ALSO your shoulders and lower arms/hands...very nice. They also added a 'Relax Pod' machine which personally I enjoy at the end of each visit. You lay down, similar to the hydro massage bed at a slight incline. There's a huge screen in front of you where you select choice of visual stimuli. I usually choose an aerial (drone?) tour of exotic places like the Scotland Highlands or tropical islands. The pod plays relaxing music during the video, you can heat the platform as well as adding scent to the air. I find it very relaxing. As for Crunch Fitness, I found their facility interesting in that they had a room where they schedule group exercise classes (mostly very early in the morning and in the evening when people are getting off of work), have a dedicated Spin room, and have a dry sauna in the ladies restroom. I LOVE a sauna, but my fitness level right now would not really benefit from group classes since I would not be able to participate fully at the moment. This gym might be one I would switch to at a later date as my physical fitness improves...time will tell. I found that the Crunch Fitness gym was NOT as clean as Planet Fitness and much more crowded with a LOT more young people. I was visiting both on a weekday before people were off of work. So comparing the crowds and attendance seemed very strikingly different. Although there was no spin or group exercise class on-going at Crunch Fitness when I was there, there were a lot of young people working out throughout the gym. Planet Fitness was a more relaxed atmosphere, in part because their attendance on that day when I first visited was on the light side. Both facilities had tanning booths if you're into that, I am not. Planet Fitness however also had the red light machine which I've not tried since rejoining but used previously and enjoyed. I don't believe Crunch Fitness had massage chairs which I also like to utilize at the end of every visit. Overall for my needs at the moment Planet Fitness was a better fit, but I have to say the dry sauna and group classes did lead me to at least consider Crunch Fitness. It's all a matter of what you're looking for I suppose. So far, my visits to Planet Fitness have been very pleasant with the staff being accommodating my needs. Just wish they would do something with the parking lot. Lots of holes and needs repair or new blacktop.

Previous reviews indicate that the park can get pretty muddy post rain and that's still the case. Plus, it seems that nobody picks up after their pets at this park! How disappointing! There were so many doggy land mines throughout the dog park, I kept worrying that I had stepped in poop or that my dogs would while running around the park. Needless to say, we didn't stick around very long. Last thing I need is for my dogs to step on poop and tracking it into my car. Would make for a very unpleasant drive. Poop stations were readily available along the fence of the park and hanging trash bags, not sure why they didn't have actual trash bins available. I will say that it's nice that they offer a separate dog park for small pups and the plentiful benches are nice too but all the poop around the park is a big bummer but irresponsible pet owners are to blame for that.
