Greenwood Cemetery is a historic cemetery just east of the downtown Orlando, Florida area. The cemetery was established in 1880. Prior to 1880, the people who resided in the Orlando, Florida area had no permanent burial location. Eight residents of the area purchased twenty-six acres of land for a cost of $1,800. Greenwood Cemetery has since grown to over eighty acres. The cemetery has many of Orlando's past prominent citizens buried there, including multiple Orlando mayors. One area of Greenwood Cemetery is the heartbreaking section known as Babyland and is the resting spot of children who passed away under the age of five. Greenwood Cemetery offers tours usually around Halloween and there are plenty of ghost stories. One humorous story is that of Fred Weeks. Mr. Weeks was a northern businessman who was swindled by three men who sold him useless swamp land and billed it as prime real estate. Weeks responded by buying a piece of land close to Greenwood Cemetery and erected a tombstone with the three men's name on it and the biblical verse, "A certain man went down from Jeruand fell among thieves." The men bought the land back from Weeks. But Weeks was not done with these less than honorable men. Upon his mausoleum in Greenwood Cemetery, he had the men's names inscribed along with the biblical verse again. It is said that Weeks haunts the graveyard, as do countless other restless spirits. Orlando was named in 1857 and incorporated in 1875. Prior to 1857 the area was called Jernigan, named after the Jernigan family, who had established the first permanent settlement in the area. Before the founding of Green Wood Cemetery, people in Orlando were buried randomly without good record keeping resulting in graves being lost. After a media campaign highlighting the problem was launched by publisher Mahlon Gore, eight Orlando citizens came together to solve the problem. In 1880, 26 acres of land at a cost of $1.800 were purchased from a Mr. John Anderson by W.R. Anno, C.A. Boone, James Delaney, James K. Duke, J.H. Livingston, Nat Poyntz, Samuel A. Robinson, and I.P. Wescott for the purpose of creating a communal graveyard. The original layout of Greenwood Cemetery was designed by Samuel A. Robinson. Simply named Orlando Cemetery, the cemetery had its name changed to Greenwood in 1915. Today, Greenwood Cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Orlando. The cemetery has since expanded to 120 acres of land, including the Greenwood Urban Wetlands which were created in 1991 as a 19-acre ecological park on the cemetery's west side. Different burial sections within the cemetery are dedicated to veterans of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam. There are also unmarked plots for African Americans who were victims of lynching. Mose Norman was a prosperous African American farmer who was attempting to vote along with other members of the African American community of Ocoee when he was chased by a mob to the home of his friend Julius "July" Perry. Perry shot and killed wo members of the mob. As a result he was publicly lynched as a messages to the Ocoee community and his grave is in Greenwood. The 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting saw the interment of four of the victims. Some of the most famous residents of the Greenwood Cemetery include Frances Eppes who was instrumental in founding of Florida State University, National Baseball Hall of Fame Joe Tinker, 8 Orlando Mayors including Carl Langford who a park is named after, U.S. Senator Charles O. Andrews, U.S. Rep. William Thomas Bland, FL Rep. Edna Giles Fuller, the first woman to serve in the Florida legislature, and Colonel Dickson who's epitaph reads "Brought the first azaleas to Orlando". Greenwood Cemetery has many stories of being haunted. It is said soldiers in military uniforms have been seen walking around. Another story features Fred Weeks who was sold worthless swamp land near the cemetery by three English attorneys. He got his revenge by creating a gravestone with the names of the three men who cheated him on it. Fred Weeks final resting place is a mausoleum in Greenwood where his ghost has been standing in front of it. US Ghost Adventures offers ghost tours of the cemetery and Greenwood used to offer moonlight history tours that were very popular but there are no longer any scheduled on their website. It says they are suspended until further notice. You are always welcome to take a look around daily from 7:00 AM until 7:00 PM when the cemetery gates are open. read more

I fell in love with this Cemetery when I did a moonlight tour years ago. If you have an interest in our City Beautiful and it's history, the tour is a great way to learn about it and see names you will recognize from our parks, streets, important city monuments. Registration is free but attendance is limited do you have to stay on your toes to get yourself in! I moved less than a mile away a few years ago and now the Cemetery is part of my daily walks. Years before we moved to this area, we did the moonlight tour of the Cemetery and it was amazing. Not only you get to walk around this great urban park in the light of the full moon, but you also get a history lesson. Most of the famous early settlers of Orlando are resting here and there are a lot of interesting stories around them. You will learn where some of our important downtown streets and avenues got their names from. Anyway, fast forward a few years and now we visit this place at least once every week. Either during an early morning stroll or a leisure bike ride or even to add some miles to my daily run. This place is a gem and we are lucky to have so much access to it. It would be amazing if they opened a gate along Gore Ave to us more direct access from Bel Air. read more

I'll be honest. I've been using Yelp since my high-school days (2004, 2005) and never did I think I'd ben enthusiastically reviewing a cemetery, let alone one that has a 31 review, 5 star page. Last week I attended was my Aunt Milly's funeral. Milly was an amazing human being who had a tremendously positive impact on my entire family and everyone she came in contact with. She was my mom's oldest sister and took care of my grandma for many years until her passing a year ago at the age of 105. Milly was extremely generous and always had your comfort top of mind. She was also hilarious, always telling me to stay out of trouble and to be a good boy (despite never really getting into trouble), no matter if I was 16 or 32 years of age. Sadly, my flight to Orlando was delayed 2 hours without explanation and we had to de-board and wait for another plane to arrive. Despite my frantic efforts to find a solution, I missed my Aunt Milly's funeral. By the time we landed and I rushed to the cemetery, I had missed it by an hour and 45 minutes. I knew my family had left and gathered at my cousins house but I had to say my goodbyes and took an uber straight there. When the uber pulled up to the gates, I immediately saw how beautiful and well-kept the grounds were. It is located directly next to a beautiful residential area and also a huge pond, surround by tall gorgeous trees, ducks, and nature. I was having trouble figuring out the location of my aunts plot but luckily the driver noticed that there were marker flags posted in the ground every few yards with my Aunts name engraved on them, which directed us straight there. As I got out and walked with my suitcase and briefcase to say my goodbyes, I noticed that one of the grounds keepers were there and had just began shoveling dirt onto the casket. There was a lot left and I asked him if I could take over and he kindly replied "I actually have an extra shovel" and pointed to it. I don't know the rules and regulations of a cemetery but we finished it up together and I will always be appreciative and grateful to him for letting me have that moment. After he drove away, I was able to spend some quality alone time with my Aunt and see my goodbyes. My Aunt Milly is now buried next to my grandma, which is very fitting considering their special unbreakable bond they shared. They both were the glue that kept our family tightly together and we won't ever let you down. Thank you Greenwood Cemetery for giving us comfort during such a hard time, it's clear to see why you have so many 5 stars all across the board. read more

This is a huge cemetery. I visited during the day and it was well maintained. Do you know about the free Greenwood Cemetery Moonlight Walking Tours? The Greenwood Cemetery was established in 1880 and is managed by the City of Orlando. You can visit during daytime cemetery hours. You can only visit at night if you attend the Moonlight Walking Tour. The cost of the tour is free but they accept donations to charity. The tours includes two miles of walking through the cemetery with brief visits to about 100 graves of notable individuals in Orlando history. I did the tour years ago and enjoyed it. The registration for the tours are through Eventbrite and it sells out quickly. The registration opens up 2 weeks before the tour dates. Visit the website for upcoming dates and registration. We love visiting old historic cemeteries. I admire all the artwork on the tombstones and we get curious on the many people buried here especially when it's a tragic death. One of the many things I like to see are the abandoned and neglected tombstones that are falling apart and never seem to receive any family visitors. I had to come here recently to finalize plans to bury my father. Our family has owned several burial plots since 1982. Talk about planning, huh! We arrived at the appointed time and Olga took us to where our plots were. She was very professional and respectful. She had all the documentation ready for us when we arrived. We also wanted to transfer a plot to a cousin, Olga provided all necessary documentation. On the day of the burial, nothing but professionalism from everyone. They provided plenty of seating, a covered area for all the mourners and secure flooring for that entire area. My mom wanted to stay and watch my dad lowered into his vault. 5 Stars for a Moonlight Stroll that is crazy hard to get in to but crazy worth it! I had been trying to get into the Moonlight Stroll at Greenwood Cemetery for a while. It's free (with a suggested donation at the end if the tour) but as soon as the registration page goes live it sells out in minutes (2 minutes to be exact). Pro-tip: set an alarm on your calendar! Also- make sure to get there early because they'll start without you. From the moment the tour started I was hanging on Don's every word. The amount of knowledge this guy has on Orlando history is nuts! I wish he had some kind of PA system since a few people on the tour were chatting while he spoke but I just made sure to be as close as possible so as not to miss anything. This is an event I recommend to all of my friends. No bells and whistles- just the amazing history that keeps you enthralled. Check the website and set your alarm! It's a good one! read more

I missed the Yelp event back in the fall for the Greenwood Cemetery Moonlight Walking Tour so when I found out that they had dates lined up for free upcoming tours I made sure to calendar so that I could RSVP. Apparently they fill up fast as there were 40+ people on the wait list. Luckily, I was able to snag tickets for my husband and I. After reading other Yelpers reviews, I made sure we arrived a little early so that we could park along the street near the gates. I found out there is always a charity featured at every tour where donations are welcome but not required. For our tour, it was the Canine Companions. There were even dogs there with their trainers along with a woman who has a canine companion of her own. The tour starts at 8pm and is about 2 hours long . LIke others have suggested, wear comfortable walking shoes because you will be walking through gravesites and around the entire cemetery. Also, dress cool as it was quite humid. Some people also brought OFF spray which was actually pretty smart. I would also recommend bringing a bottle of water but , just a note, the restroom is at the beginning of the tour . Don was a great tour guide, so animated and obviously loves giving this tour. He ran the cemetery for 28 years and this was his first tour, post retirement, as he retired several weeks ago! It was really cool to hear sooo many stories about the namesakes of sooo many Orlando landmarks. Especially for someone who hasn't lived in Orlando all her life. This is definitely a must for any local history nerd , resident and all around lover of all things Orlando. On a side note- sitting on headstones is a big no-no. How about some respect? I was appalled that someone thought that was ok. I'm sure someone is rolling around in their grave .... read more

Moonlight stroll is what is up! Don rules with his knowledge of Orlando and it's history! I have lived here 12 years and am ashamed I have never taken this tour before December. I learns so much and had a blast. There is a reason this Cemetery averages high reviews on Yelp! I was surprised too but I am now a believer. With a full moon lighting our way and Don leading us from history filled graves with loads of humor, it was impossible not to have a great time, even if it was raining. Hey, it added to the ambiance. Did you know this is the only cemetery in Orlando City limits? There are so many cool facts that this place houses, you really need to take the time and visit. Ask for Don while you are there if it's not during a guided tour, he has so much love and appreciation for him work and will be happy to share his knowledge with you. You can even follow him on Twitter... yep, @orlandocemetery do it! The scenery alone is worth a stroll through, vast area, gorgeous landscaping and even some eagles (along with many other Mother Nature's children). You can see the city skyline from the highest point in the cemetery which is also the highest point in Orlando, I know... cool right? I have to head back and catch a few more tours, there was so much info that I couldn't retain it all. I was also trying to get photos to see if I could capture anything. I love feeling history deep in my bones from a setting and ambiance alone and this tour definitely delivered all of that and more. Who knew you didn't have to go all the way to St. Augustine to get your spooky action on? Parking is tricky so if you are arriving during a busy time (a stroll), make sure to arrive early so you can park close to the gates, parking is only on one side of the street. I participated in the Stroll 11/15/13. It was staged wonderfully by the Yelp field marketing team (this doesn't happen all the time, just occasionally). I was greeted with some snacks and drinks and lots of warm welcome from people who have an interest in history (primarily) or philosophy - like life and death and the beyond. It was a large-ish groups of 50+ people from diverse backgrounds and ages. The tour itself and Don were really wonderful and I would totally recommend. It highlights lots of key personalities that helped build orlando and florida. Its all set in a moonlight backdrop which doesn't seem spooky but fascinating. If you can - PLEASE GO! And talk to Don before it starts, because he is really cool. He was been doing his job of running the cemetery for a long time and has a lot of personality. And is happy to answer questions. I found it interesting that there is only one cemetery in Orlando (Greenwood) and there is a city ordinance that if you are a resident of Orlando - you have to be buried there! My friends and I had heard rave reviews about Greenwood Cemetery's Moonlight Walking Tour but were never able to get in -- though the tickets are free they "sell out" fast! Determined to make July's tour I set a reminder & booked my tickets first thing that morning; the tour was sold out within the hour. If you're looking to go (and you should go, trust me, it's great) make sure to get your tickets first thing the day the window opens up! Upon arriving we were greeted by Don, who worked at Greenwood for 28 years, and is one of the most energetic people you will meet. From the moment we arrived, Don had the crowd at the palm of his hand cracking jokes and sharing stories. You can tell he really loves giving the tour. The tour is two hours long (wear comfortable shoes) and shows you the cemetery's highlights, and there are a ton. From confederate and union sections to Orlando's forefathers, Greenwood Cemetery is filled with historical figures. I learned so much about the City Beautiful on this tour; it was nice to discover how the city we live in came to be. In all, this tour is an absolute gem and a must for any Orlando local! I can't believe that I've lived here for 13 years and have never been! I actually used to live a half a block away from this gem and never even realize it existed. For shame! The Moonlight Stroll was a fascinating trip through Orlando's history. So many think the city is only here because of Disney World. That's false. Don is the manager at the cemetery and is filled with the most random knowledge that really keeps you interested. I learned so many interested things about Orlando history, race relations in the city and even just fun things about the cemetery itself. Did you know that the highest and lowest points with the Orlando city limits are both within the walls of the cemetery? Did you know this is the only cemetery in Orlando City limits? It's a beautiful cemetery and I bet even better during the day! I will definitely go back in daylight to check it out in more detail. They do host a monthly moonlight tour but it does fill up fast. Yes, I'm reviewing a cemetery. THIS cemetery rules! The manager, Don, is so funny and friendly. I can't wait for the next moonlight stroll! I really tried to remember just a fraction of the facts he spewed out while giving my own little tour. [His tweets help -- twitter.com/orlandocemetery] Basically, you can't really say you live in Orlando without visiting this cemetery and getting a feel for the history. It's beautifully maintained and very relaxing. On the weekends you can hear live musicians/horn players (Not sure what that is about), and if you're luck you may be able to spot a voodoo chicken! (still looking...) Pets are not allowed, but you wouldn't want to bring them anyway since there are coyotes and other wild animals paroling the grounds. So much Orlando history here. Who knew? It's the only cemetary in Orlando. You can pretty much name a street in Orlando and that street's namesake is in the graveyard. From Thomas Jefferson's grandson to the lady who nicknamed our beloved city "The City Beautiful." It's a really interesting tour. The gentleman probably had a ton more stories to tell. He knew everything. Surprisingly, the cemetery isn't haunted. Which was a bit of a let down but probably good for the city. read more

I come here often for genealogy research. At least once a week. The grounds are well maintained and just beautiful. If you need to peace and quiet, just park and take a stroll. The staff here is amazing and always helpful from the Sexton, Don to the guy pulling weeds. They all truly care about the residents and I've seen them working with grieving families to make arrangements in the kindest way. Here you'll find a coyote keeping a watchful eye over the residents, bald eagles watching over our veterans, foxes running about, all the Orlando street names, veterans from the Confederacy, GAR, Spanish American War, WWII, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, current conflicts, mausoleums, sculptures, a pin-up girl watching over "our boys", funny epitaphs, heartbreaking epitaphs and mysteries. It's a cemetery, but absolutely a living place. read more

As a history nerd, I highly enjoyed the Moonlight Stroll with Don. I did not grow up in Orlando, but I have lived here almost 10 years total, so learning about the early figures who shaped the City Beautiful (and where that nickname came from) really makes me appreciate the colorful history Orlando has. Don did a great job to capture everyone's attention, as he was a great story teller, and really showed he has a love for not only the cemetery he manages, but the people and city it serves. I really think my dad would love this tour, so we will probably be back to hear more of Don's stories and to learn more about the residents. read more

Such a treat to listen to Don tell the stories about Orlando's past. I've lived here my whole life and yet I learned so much! I would recommend setting an alarm for the signup because it fills up within seconds. He gets the feel for the group to see who has been before and will often take you into different areas of the cemetery depending on the number of frequent visitors. Don has personally known a few that are buried in Greenwood and has great stories. We are so fortunate to have someone who is passionate enough to devote his time to share the stories of those passed so we may learn more about our hometown. After hearing positive things about the Greenwood Cemetery Moonlight Walking Tour from other Yelpers I set myself a reminder to book tickets for the next tour. The morning the tickets were available online they sold out FAST. I logged on and reserved tickets first thing, but a friend tried an hour later and they were already sold out. They are free tickets and in high demand, so you have to act quick. We arrived around 7:40 for the tour, which started at 8:00. We were early enough to get street parking close to the cemetery gates. Don, the tour guide, met us at the gate and once the crowd was gathered opened the gates and led us towards the office to start the tour. The office has a restroom and water fountain you can use before and after the tour. I can't say enough great things about Don. He is a natural storyteller and has built up a wealth of knowledge from his years working here. His tour touched on many of the famous names around Orlando and interesting stories of lesser known residents as well. It is fascinating stuff. And I get the impression the tour changes a bit from one to the next depending on audience questions, so it would be well worth going back. A couple notes about the tour: 1. Dress comfortably, this is pretty casual (I really did not need to wear a sweater in June). and 2. Flashlights are cool, but be courteous of others and just use them when walking and keep them pointed at the ground (not in my eyes). This was my first visit to Greenwood Cemetery, and I am already planning on going back. I would love to walk through the cemetery again during the day. Overall, this was a very unique and interesting Orlando experience, I highly recommend it. read more

If you live in Orlando you need to check out Greenwood's 'Moonlight Stroll' tour. Not only is it is a gem, but it's also a very popular activity. I tried RSVP'ing for this event several times in the past with no luck. Pro tip: visit their online calendar and find a date that works for you, then set a reminder on your phone to RSVP as soon as those reservations go live. You can get 2 tickets per RSVP all for the cost of a donation (toward whichever cause they're supporting that particular day). From there you're invited to casually stroll along the grounds...under trees as old as some of the tenants themselves. As the moon casts shadows through their branches and lazily swaying Spanish moss, you're enjoying the stories of so many Orlando dignitaries who helped to shape 'The City Beautiful' blossom into the town we know today. With a tour guide who was as quick with a joke as an historic aecdote, this (roughly) 2-hour outing was a very cool way to learn more about a place many of us call home. read more

The first time I visited Greenwood Cemetery it was during a community Yelp event Moonlight Stroll and I've loved it ever since. During the day Greenwood Cemetery is a large and beautiful sprawling area filled with trees hanging with Spanish moss and historic tombstones. This is a tranquil area where you can take a walk with a loved one and reflect on the lives some of the people around you may have lived. Because the cemetery is also connected to urban wetlands you'll also catch sightings of beautiful birds or even the coyote who lives there. The hubs and I will sometimes ride are bikes through here which is totally okay we just make sure to be respectful if there is a service going on and avoid the area around it or gawking. We also will never trample on the ground. Stick with the roads if you have a bike (Leave your skates, skate boards, and dogs at home though). At night I definitely recommend RSVPing for the Moonlight Stroll. Don, the guide and caretaker was really funny and informative. The dude is an Orlando national treasure and keeper of all things Orlando history. So glad I finally got to do this. It wasn't at all what I expected- it was better. Our tour guide, Don, has the greatest sense of humor ever! He engaged our entire group in laughs, MANY LAUGHS! Don's historical knowledge of "The City Beautiful" is astounding. The who's who of Orlando has a plot here in this cemetery. He told us some amazing tales of Orlando's society. There is so much history here and this is one of the best places in the city to take a nice stroll. This historic place is close to downtown and convenient to the 4 and the. 408. Tucked away on a dead end street in the equally historic Mills/Delaney Park area this gem will leave you eager to come back. Take a stroll or take a nice bike ride, you won't be disappointed with this mind clearing haven in the middle of historic Orlando. This is a great place to explore local history and even look for some very well hidden geocaches. PS: I have seen coyotes here a few times, maybe it IS haunted. read more

We finally got the Golden Tickets for the cemetery tour!!! It was well worth the wait; very interesting and informative history of the residents and Orlando. I would love to stick Don in a golf cart and drive around listening to the stories all day...with light refreshments of course...'cause it's legal in a cemetery! Because of the tour, my husband and I have decided to go back during the day for a better look. Then head downtown to see the actual buildings talked about during the tour. Wow....there is so much Orlando history here! I grew up right around the corner, but never went in until I got into geocaching. It brought me here on two different occasions. On the first, I saw what I thought was either a wolf or a very large coyote running through the property. I never expected to see that so deep in Orlando. I never thought I'd find myself reviewing a cemetery, though I saw a link for it this afternoon on Yelp and it brought back some memories of my one and only visit here. I thought I'd just write a quick review and share my experience. My one trip here was in 2008 or 2009 ... maybe early 2009. It was on a Friday the 13th, so the cemetery was offering a haunted tour of its grounds and buildings and so on. I was with some friends that night, and we made a big deal about the whole Friday the 13th thing - in fact, we went on the cemetery tour and then went to see the latest Friday the 13th movie, which came out in theatres that night. The movie was pretty ridiculous, but I loved the cemetery tour earlier in the evening! The cemetery employees and some young children/teenagers put on a show for the tour attendees. Everyone who performed was in costume and character at different stations throughout the cemetery, telling haunted tales about and recalling ghastly experiences had by cemetery "residents" - the dead. It was a lot of fun, though some of my friends were laughing a lot, maybe because they thought some of the dialogue and cheap thrills were corny. I didn't - I mean, it was all in good fun and so on, and the people who were dressed up were good sports. All in all, it was pretty cool. The young kids who were performing remained in character, and I was impressed with their work. I'm not sure if this was just a one-time thing, though it'd be worth checking into to see if the cemetery does this tour or anything else like it on all Fridays the 13th or at any additional times. I think the tour I went on was even free? If it cost anything (honestly, I can't remember), it wasn't much - a few dollars, if that. I'm really curious to find out when the next Friday the 13th is and to see what, if anything, the cemetery has planned. If you're into that sort of thing, then you would likely have fun at the cemetery's tours, should any be offered. read more

We were lucky enough to get tickets to the Moonlight Walking Tour (not a ghost tour), and were so glad we went! This tour was every bit as good as other reviewers noted. Don was a fabulous guide, and we learned so much about the history of Central Florida as well as some of the people woven into the fabric of Orlando. I started off the tour just listening, but the information was so interesting and I was worried I wouldn't remember the things Don mentioned so I began taking notes and couldn't stop! The owl hooting in the background gave some great ambience as well :-) Two hours went by in a flash with so much ground still to cover for next time. I will definitely be back for more! 5 stars. You don't live in Orlando till you take this tour. The guide is great, 2 hours flys by even when it's wet, hot and humid.
