To get a really good view of this art you need to stand across the street. Overall it is something decent to look at before going inside to enjoy the awesome happy hour at Loda Bier Garden. Usually I find it too hot outside to sit at the tables next to this mural but there are some days usually in the winter when it can be less hot and sometimes nearly cold that are better outside to my temperature preferences.

In case you are unaware, the first Mardi Gras here in the United States was not in New Orleans, Louisiana, but rather here in Mobile, Alabama. Mardi Gras is still celebrated here yearly and I personally am a huge fan. The Mardi Gras celebration is centered around Joe Cain, the man who brought Mardi Gras to the United States. The Sunday before Fat Tuesday, there is a celebration in honor of Joe Cain complete with the Joe Cain Procession (it is never called a parade). Joe Cain's "merry widows" gather at Joe Cain's grave at the Church Street Graveyard to lay a wreath at Joe Cain's grave. These "widows" are dressed in black for mourning and it is an impressive way to start Mardi Gras in Mobile, Alabama. The food in Mobile is amazing, as well. You can taste the cajun influence in the food. Mobile, Alabama has been called the "Paris of the South" and this vibrant, hip city does meet up to that comparison. I look forward to my visits to Mobile, Alabama. If you find yourself in this great city,I would recommend that you visit Church Street Graveyard to pay your respects to Joe Cain, enjoy a fantastic po' boy or another cajun dish, and go check out the Gulf of Mexico. I would also check out Dauphin Street, which is the hip part of downtown. I give Mobile, Alabama an overall rating of five stars and I would definitely recommend a visit to Mobile, Alabama.

Ah, yes! What can I say about the city of Mobile? I like to think of Mobile as a somewhat…read moresleepy-town, on the brink of a major awakening-- when the sleeping pill wears off. The location and real estate potential is off the charts. And while other cities (even its neighbors-- Biloxi, Orange Beach/Gulfshores) might've run wild with the possibilities in a New York second, I believe Mobile has a certain "slow and steady wins the race" trajectory. Not too much, not too fast-- not sure if that's good or bad! I am banking on the fact that in my short time here, I've seen many things being added to the city of Mobile. They've got bike rentals, a new pedal tour, a walking foodie tour, great museums, great restaurants, Mardi Gras (the first in the USA) season and parades galore on their side, many new businesses being added, Carnival Cruise Lines, a growing art walk and cultural scene, etc. Again, there's a lot to do (if you're in the know) and so much potential here to be seized and capitalized on.

This is nothing like the New Orleans French Quarter. First off it is way cleaner and smells far…read morebetter. This area is also significantly safer than New Orleans. Now I can see how they were going for a gimmick marketing play here but they missed some elements. The restaurants and businesses here offer nothing French I saw and nothing that resembles New Orleans French Quarter. Panani Pete's offers Italian Panani sandwiches so this seems more like the Italian Quarter. Now parts of the New Orleans French Quarter were known as Little Italy or Little Palermo during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries as so many Sicilian immigrants lived in the French Quarter so maybe the theme is back to that era? The HUGE missing elements here are that they have no ability to allow you to carry your booze about everywhere like properly civilized humans should and they force closing times without any 24/7 establishments serving libations as a joy focused culture should. So I just don't get any sort of French Quarter vibe or joie de vivre required for a place to claim French Quarter status. Perhaps I'm missing something?

Cobblestone streets, music being piped through outdoor speakers, water fountains, flowers…read moreeverywhere and adorable little shops? Are you somewhere in heaven? Yes, pretty much. Welcome to Fairhope's French Quarter. Ahh, this little slice of heaven is in the middle of the beautiful little town of Fairhope. Getting to it is just as nice as being there. It's a pretty drive up and down hilly tree lined streets where duck and geese crossings aren't uncommon. Parking was a little challenging since I wasn't familiar with the area (yet, trust me I came here multiple times on my visit, so I learned quickly) but once I found it, it was a breeze and there are plenty of places to park for free. Once you're inside there so much to see and do, not unlike the New Orleans FQ but on a much smaller and less smelly scale. Cute little shops with clothing, books, restaurants, novelties and art. It's totally worth a visit or twenty and I highly recommend checking it out for yourself. I know I'll be back!

The loud out of tune and spastic music selection, loud TV with football, and 4 wheeler with his own music which was not only annoying but even caused the artists headaches. Good advice to planners of these types of events, alittle quiet please so those sincere appreciators can enjoy and shop. People with dogs should understand it's not a dog show, your dog loves you but not the heat of blacktop, crowds and noise. To those people who's parents never teaching the art of etiquette, using interrupting behavior makes you appear classless. It doesn't help in sales or elsewise.

Some of my finds included a Corian trivet shaped like a turtle, and I got our niece one that's shaped like a mermaid. I also bought a spoon made from Corian with a notch on it so it can rest on the side of the pot. I bought a print of the Middle Bay lighthouse painted by a retired fireman. I bought two prints of sea turtles painted by an up and coming artist named Gary Pope, Jr. My friend Bev kept telling him he should increase his prices before I paid for mine. She's totally right, but wait until after I buy mine. My favorite local photographer/candle maker was there selling her candles and wax melts and I loaded up. That's Lynn Jordan/Bon Secour Candle Company, in case you're wondering. I bought Jasmine a tutu from a booth that had everything you could possibly want for your pet. Of course I bought some pottery. I got the most fabulous and practical utensil holder with crabs on it for only $36! I wanted so much more and the prices were great. In addition to what we bought, we saw wood bowls, gorgeous and well-made handcrafted jewelry, paintings, clothing, address plaques and so much more. There were several food stands as well and some live music. This festival is not huge. We walked in in a matter of a couple of hours and saw everything. It's really a can't miss annual event. There's no admission and parking is free.

Ten Sixty Five Fest! The name gives me chills of excitement! The music spectacular of the fall…read morecalendar is Ten Sixty Five and makes music lovers of all kinds coming out and support local and nationally recognized musicians performing in Mobile! Put on through the Jake Peavy Foundation in partnership with many local businesses including Gulf Distributing, Austal, Regions Bank, and others, it's a 100 percent FREE festival held for an entire weekend in Downtown Mobile! Aptly named as Mobile is where I-10 and I-65 meet forming a crossroads for the nation, Ten Sixty Five brings a myriad of regional, local, and national music acts from all genres to Mobile to show us what they can do! The main festival stage takes over the end of Dauphin Street near Moe's BBQ in the Lower Dauphin Street Entertainment Area for three days allowing local bands and national headliners to descend on downtown Mobile to entertain Mobilians and visitors alike. Spanning the music of today in the genres of Folk, Rock, Alternative, and a little Bluegrass and Country there is something for everyone, Last year local heroes the Mulligan Brothers played, as did nationally renowned recording artists the Counting Crows, with Trombone Shorty and others rounding out the lineup! This year the list is riddled with alternative rock groups that will be sure to draw major crowds such as Cage the Elephant and Judah and the Lion; both of which have been featured on Sirius XM for years now. Local favorites Wet Willie will be jamming out like hometown hero Jimmy Buffet bringing that Mobile bay and beach vibe to Ten Sixty Five. In addition, Southern Rockers and national recording artists Blackberry Smoke will grace the Ten Sixty Five stage bringing their unique sound which seems to take its roots from that of Confederate Railroad and .38 Special! In my opinion Ten Sixty Five is a can't miss event of the fall and showcases the absolute uniqueness of the Mobile community and its desire to be known as a business, social, music, and food mecca of the Gulf Coast. With Bayfest being gone, this was an event that needed to happen and in the eyes of this Mobilian is a welcome addition to the entertainment calendar.

I love when Mobile is able to put events like this together…read more 1065 took the place of Bayfest and while it didn't secure the most popular bands or singers, it delivered fantastic groups- both local and non-locals (it did grab Cage the Elephant!). For a free event, it didn't disappoint. It's always nice to see a variety of people turn out to support and enjoy things like this. It's located in the heart of downtown with carrots stages scattered along Dauphin street, close enough to walk to the next but far enough the sounds don't take over each other. It's also in a prime location for fantastic restaurants and bars to keep you fed and hydrated. It's a must for anyone who hasn't been, at least once!
