I had an emergency Hernia repair in March, 2022 only to be in pretty much the same situation less than a year later. In February 2023, I was seen by 3 Surgeons and they all turned me down but each of them suggested I consider Dr. Dumanian because of my unusual situation. After a 3 month wait for an appointment, I met Dr. Dumanian and he assured me he could fix my problem. Don't be fooled by the five-star reviews. My surgery with Dr. Dumanian has left me far worse off, with much more pain. I was extremely alarmed to learn he also lied in my surgical and other reports, including saying he explained the risks of the procedure. He didn't. His nurse Katie was also dishonest. Prior to the surgery, I asked her about recovery time, and she never mentioned any potential side effects or problems. She didn't do so until well after the procedure. Doctors who've helped me since have looked at it skeptically, with one basically saying it shouldn't have been done. Another immediately knew the procedure was Dr. Dumanian's handiwork, without me even mentioning his name. I've had 3 mesh reinforcement tummy tucks with Dr Dumanian at Northwestern Memorial in Chicago. When I first met the doctor, I liked his bedside manner and I liked his personality. He was soft-spoken and seemed very nice the morning after my first tummy tuckI was surprised to see that the doctor came and visited me in the hospital. He seems so nice and caring. He even gave me his cell number in case I needed something. I thought that was very nice. I'm a very fit Mom up too, and they have no idea why it would need so many tummy tucks. I'm devastated with my results. I'm devastated of how I feel every day. I'm devastated of how I look. I look like I'm pregnant and that's not fair that I look this way. I also have issues and I'm looking into different opinions or solutions for my abdomen and because of my extensive surgeries no one wants to even look at my case. in addition, I also have three different layers of mesh implanted into my abdomen. Giving Dr. Gregory Dumanian the highest level 5 star review seems somehow inadequate. Dr. Dumanian gave me my life back, it's as simple as that. I lost my kidney due to a septic infection in 2018 and a rib was removed to get the kidney out. Within 6 months I had developed an extremely large bulge on my left side. This I came to learn was a flank hernia/incisional hernia. Knowing nothing about hernias, I found a local hernia doctor in New Orleans where I live who immediately looked at the size/location and told me it was above his pay grade. In hindsight, I should have done more research and found Dr. Dumanian then but I didn't and if I could change things, that is what I would change. Instead I found another local hernia doctor who told me he could fix me, he would go in through the old incision and repair me. When I woke up from my hernia surgery in fall of 2019, the doctor informed me he had to close me up and go through the front, there was too much scar tissue but nevertheless, I was fixed. Well, I wasn't fixed. It was better, but I still had a bulge and had to learn to live with that. By the fall of 2020, a year after hernia repair, I hated my body. I had developed extremely loose/weak stomach muscles and now in addition to the increasingly larger hernia on my side, I had a spare tire in the front. I went to a very prominent plastic surgeon in my city because if I was going to live the rest of my life with the hernia bulge, I was going to at least have the spare tire removed via a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Things did not go as planned and the prominent plastic surgeon would not attempt to operate on me due to the size of my "repaired" hernia. I was devastated. I began to very heavily research flank/incisional hernias and discovered they are a pretty complex beast, possibly something I would never be able to have fully repaired and would have to learn to live with. But every time I researched key words such as "recurrent" and "failed" and "flank" I kept coming back to one man, Dr. Gregory Dumanian. There are a handful of doctors out there who might have been able to help me but no matter what horrible wording I used to eliminate anyone who truly could not help me, Dr. Dumanian's name kept popping up in the "can help me" category. I stressed for a few days and then on a Sunday afternoon in December 2020, during Covid and during a time when it seemed the sky would just never stop falling on us all collectively, I stopped feeling sorry for myself and I took a huge step....I filled out the interactive form on Dr. Dumanian's website and prayed that somehow, someway, I would find some help. Within an hour, Dr. Dumanian himself emailed me! (a doctor, in December on a Sunday??!! Yes, he responded to my plea for help right then and there!) And so began my journey with this amazing surgeon. 8 days before I was scheduled to fly to Chicago for my pre-op visit, I was admitted locally in agonizing pain which was attributed to slow bowels/partial obstruction due to my hernia. They did a CT locally and encouraged me to keep that appointment with Dr. Dumanian. I feel that episode was meant to be because I was able to present Dr. Dumanian with that CT that now revealed to him that I not only had my hernia on my side, I had 3 hernias total! Yes, 3 hernias. The initial hernia repair led to a very unusual internal hernia, which when I looked at the CT images, seemingly bisected me straight across on my left side from front to back. As a bonus, I also had a tiny hernia at the front incision. I was a hot mess and Dr. Dumanian stressed it would be complex, it would be painful, but he could do it. So, I signed up for the pain, whatever that was going to be and my husband and I spent 2 weeks in Chicago in April of this year... I spent 4 full days in the hospital and by day 7, I was actually released to go home....that's how good this doctor is! Yesterday made 5 weeks post op (off pain meds since week 3!) and I now have to pinch myself every day when I look in the mirror to make sure this has not all been a dream. It's not a dream, it's real and I finally understand what it means to be comfortable in my own skin. If you are reading this review and contemplating a life-changing decision to repair something that makes you feel broken such as was the case with my kidney removal/hernia, or if you are looking to improve something about your body that you just can't accept, such as my spare tire and the repulsion I experienced, I will say please find a way to get it done with this doctor. I feel like I have gone through hell and back and out the other side to a better existence now. I wake up every day not feeling like my life revolves around my midsection. This doctor has an extremely good reputation locally and nationally for complex surgeries, even among the doctors in my family. So, I felt somewhat embarrassed that I ended up in his office for a little lump on my forehead, but he was in my insurance network at the time. And, I already had the lump removed by a dermatologist (only to come back). So, I thought I needed to see someone else in case it was more complicated or a more serious issue. He did the whole thing in under 15 minutes and I had a tiny little scar that healed very fast despite the fact that forehead skin is very tight and more exposed to the sun. Dr. Dumanian is also very nice, so people with more serious issues will hopefully feel comfortable seeing him. That's probably the main reason I wanted to write this. You have a lot of doctor choices for skin issues like cysts or lipomas or whatever this was. For complex abdominal wall reconstruction, the list is much shorter and he's well known to be one of the best. Fortunately, he still fits in minor patients in between serious patients. read more

I have had an ileostomy for about 20 years. It has never worked properly, it has leaked forever, I had numerous surgeries to elongate it, to move it, to remove abscesses near it, to fix hernias around it, seen at least 5 other doctors and 8 specialty nurses (in 3 states) all to still have an ileostomy that leaks. Dr. Dumanian performed surgery on my abdomen, using glue to close the area near the stoma so I could heal with a normal bag (and the scar would be flat so the bag could get a good seal) and staples across the rest of my abdomen. Dr. Dumanian is the first and only doctor who has SUCCESSFULLY performed surgery on my abdomen that has virtually STOPPED the leaking. After a procedure with Dr. Dumanian, I had two years of significant, life altering complications, resulting in multiple in office surgical procedures from him, thousands of dollars in medical supplies, months of missed work and I now feel worse physically, than before my procedure and I have multiple, painful scars. Other doctors opinions suspected the same cause of the complications but Dr. Dumanian vehemently denied this possibility to the point of being what seemed to be untruthful. At times, he seemed kind, caring, going the extra mile, but if questioned he became defensive, angry and arrogant. I had a left sided open nephrectomy approximately ten years ago that developed into multiple abdominal incisional hernias that I had repaired without mesh approximately eight years ago because I did not want to deal with the complications of mesh. After I developed multiple hernias in the area for a second time, I researched who is the best at complicated abdominal wall reconstruction in the country, not just Chicago. Being a physician, I have access to many opinions from friends and colleagues and Dr. Dumanian's name came up repeatedly. Dr. Dumanian was very reasonable showing me the MRI images and the plan for the procedure. He gave me a clear understanding of expectations about surgery and recovery. Equally important were his post procedure skills. He supplied his personal email and cell phone. From the initial consultation, I felt comfortable with and confident in Dr. Dumanian. I had a single mastectomy. He did a tram flap reconstruction of my left breast and a lift with a fat graph to my right to help the two breasts match. What I thought was the most telling, and in the end, the most important to me, is that I healed unbelievably easily and, after a year, you could barely see the scars on my breasts or abdomen. Dr. Dumanian is the best surgeon that I have ever had. I lost almost complete use of my thumb and I didn't think I would ever be able to use it again. After having tendon transfers done by Dr. Dumanian, I am closer every day to having full function of my hand. I am 100% pleased with Dr. Dumanian's work. I recently had a set of twins in 2014 and was left with rectus diastasis. With rectus diastasis you belly is left to still appear as though you are pregnant. My tummy was still round and stood out about 6 inches or so. In addition to that I had a hernia about the size of a foot ball which made it stick out more. On top of that my breast were incredibly large. Standing at 5"3 and 165 pounds I wore a 34 H bra. On the initial visit photos were taken and I must say I felt worst than I did when I walked in. A year later and I finally had a clear picture of what the pregnancy did to my body. I went into surgery 2 months later. Dr. Dumanian corrected my rectus diastasis, did lipo in several areas of my stomach, abdominoplasty and breast reduction. Today I am very pleased with my results. For the first time in years I can look at myself in the mirror and feel good about myself. My dress size went from a 12 to an 8 and I can wear a 2 piece bikini and I'm currently in a size small sports bra. Dr. Dumanian has played a major role in how I feel about myself.
