Forget this guy and keep shopping. I had a neck lift and jowl lift. HORRIBLE! He ruptured my salivary gland on my left side that took 3 months to heal. I was in extreme pain and he did NOT care. He went to La Vegas to play golf. My hearing didn't return for 8 months. Also, I have globs (a pile), of skin behind both ears and the bottom of my right earlobe is a huge pile of skin and very noticeable scars. The neck lift lasted 1 year. I had an upper blepharoplasty and brow lift three years ago and I was so pleased with the results, that I went back to him a year ago for a mini face lift, fat grafting from stomach to lips and ablative laser resurfacing on my upper lip to remove deep wrinkles. Just over a month ago, I had a facelift, one brow lift (the right was lower than the left), and a few fat injections under my eyes. Dr Mustoe is experienced but he is not a perfectionist. The tip of my nose is crooked and overly pointed because of broken cartilage....it was never that way before the operation. My profile looks fine, if a little pointed, but when viewing from the front and from a low angle one can see that the nostrils are crooked and are too narrow for my face... I didn't ask him to make my nostrils so narrow.!! One can see the cartilage at the tip has been broken and is protruding.. He did one revision at no cost; it was improved somewhat--- It was ridiculously crooked post operation, but its still far from acceptable. read more

Dr. Mustoe restored symmetry to my face by fixing my drooping brow and eyelid. I was born with one hooded eye and one eyebrow lower than the other, and have always felt an extra weight on that eye. I'm young and wasn't sure if a brow lift was the right fix, but Dr. Mustoe's staff was very helpful and Dr. Mustoe told me exactly which procedures would accomplish the results I wanted. The procedure itself was easy and occurred in the office with minimal anesthesia, and the recovery went just as smoothly. I'm 3 months out and my scars are almost gone, with great results! At first I have to admit, I was a bit intimidated by the idea of seeing Dr. Mustoe. He has the best reputation in the midwest and as the former head of cosmetic surgery at Northwestern, I thought it would take forever to get an appointment. I was pleasantly surprised when I called and was able to book an appointment within a month. My second concern was that Dr. Mustoe would be so far out of my budget that I wouldn't be able to afford anything beyond a consult. Again, I was wrong. What I didn't know, (and I have to confess, a friend of mine who is also a cosmetic surgeon filled me in) when you have the top-notch doctor who has performed these surgeries literally thousands of times, you get the person who can do it in his sleep, or more importantly, in his office. So my procedure (mid-face lift with fat grafts) would have to have been done in a surgical center, or hospital if I had any other doctor, but doctor Mustoe, can perform this procedure right in his office. (Note - his office is in the Northwestern campus.) This detail saved me a small fortune as I didn't have to pay for an anesthesiologist, an operating room, or surgical center. The benefit is that recovery is much easier. My recovery was easy, I was up and about in a day. And if I do say so myself, my face looks 15 years younger without that pulled, face-lifty look we have all seen. Dr. Mustoe's staff is wonderful, professional and highly skilled. I went to Dr. Mustoe after my chin implant of eight years became infected during dental implant surgery. After a year of on-and-off infections and swelling, large, seeping boils popped up at the ends of the chin implant. When the boils dried up, I was left with deep indentations, giving me a "jowly", square look and certainly an uneven jaw line. I visited two local plastic surgeons, one who referred to my problem as a "red herring" and the other said, let's continue with the antibiotics. Recognizing my despair, my employer recommended Dr. Mustoe, two hours away in Chicago. I checked out Dr. Mustoe on the Internet. A wound-care, Harvard-educated, patent-holding specialist, who even appeared on Oprah, was exactly what I needed. I encountered weeks' delays in seeing the two local surgeons. Not so with Dr. Mustoe. I was scheduled within a week. I thought, too, a surgeon of his caliber might be intimidating for a small-town "girl." Not the case. At our first meeting, he was kind, compassionate, and resolute. He said the infected chin implant needed to be removed immediately and did so that afternoon. I returned the following week, and he had detailed exactly what I needed to return my face to its prior state as well as enhance it -- a face lift, neck lift, and fat grafting for the indentations. I added eyelid surgery and fat grafting to my lopsided upper lip. Surgery was scheduled for the next month. It's been about two months since the surgery. I no longer have a "drapey" neck, a finely-wrinkled, jowly face, baggy eyelids, and those disturbing indentations on either side of my chin look almost flush with my jaw. (He had to cut them out, so to speak, and inject fat, as the tissue damage was more extreme, than originally expected). What's more I don't have that tight, I-just-had-a-face-lift look. Dr. Mustoe said I would look "rested." I do -- almost 20-years worth! I visited my children in D.C. over Christmas. They had not been apprised of my procedures. My daughter-in-law,a surgical nurse, commented my "skin looked flawless." My face and neck didn't "show any aging." And, I looked as though, I "didn't have anything done." Other considerations to surgery are cost and recovery. His costs are very comparable to what I would have paid in my small town and I would not have had a surgeon of his caliber. (My procedures were done in his office which saves). My recovery was speedy. Within three days, my pain had abated. At the post-surgery visit, I received a laser treatment which greatly reduced the discoloration from bruising. Scarring is visibly minimal on my eyelids, around and behind my ears. (They are almost flat and appear to be just "lines.") Lastly, Dr. Mustoe's staff is superbly qualified. I appreciate the professional care and genuine concern I received from his surgical nurse, Beth Wagley and Cindy Hinkle, laser specialist/aesthetician. Between, receptionist, and Lori, patient care coordinator, were also very helpful. I couldn't have been more pleased with the procedures and attention I received from Dr. Mustoe and his staff. I went to Dr. Mustoe to repair my tummy after having three children. It was not an easy job! I had an extremely round stomach that was equivalent to roughly 6-7 months pregnant. I had tried exercises and physical therapy at a women's health specialist. Nothing worked. I was about 5'6 and 130 pounds yet required a size 12 pants to fit in my enormous diastasis-laden tummy. He honestly told me that I wouldn't be able to be 100% flat. And I respect that. I would much rather be told that than given false promises. as it turns out, I look better than anticipated! I also had brought his attention to a concern I have bad for a long time regarding my profile. He quickly offered the best solution, but also gave a few options for me to compare. I selected a chin implant and accompanying rhinoplasty to complete my long-desired transformation. Wow. He was spot on with his recommendations. I'm thrilled. I initiated the extra procedure, not the doctor. Dr. Mustoe is unmatched. He is incredibly methodical and precise--a perfectionist. Not overly warm, his bedside manner is well-situated to plastic surgery. He listened to my concerns and addressed them in a clear and concise way. He had wonderful eye contact and an approachable personality. His explanation of my potential outcome was honest, realistic, and well-presented. I met with several surgeons, but I had expected for him to be the very best. I was not disappointed. I took time to read his published articles (wonderful, innovative thinking and a clarity of thought that is striking). I took time to review his education and training (he is Harvard-trained and has been a master educator for years). He is blunt ("well, you do have quite a large nose") but remember, this is a science. The doctor isn't trying to hurt your feelings, he is looking at your presented issue with a problem/solution viewpoint. I knew my nose was big, that's why I wanted him to fix it :) I'm still amazed that I could breath perfectly out of my nose the DAY OF surgery. I never once had an issue breathing. I'm still unsure about how he did that. Amazing. The nose scar is practically invisible after 3 months. Yes I did have to wait for appointments (15-20 minutes sometimes so call if you're running behind and you may just have time for a Starbucks). The parking does add up $15 per visit (get your Neiman's shopping in while you are downtown). He wasn't really gentle removing my stitches (thorough, though, yes), but that's sometimes the case for the best SURGEON. Does removing stitches ever really feel great, no? However I'm not willing to compromise on my body. His staff members are also great. They work hard and maintain a pleasant attitude. They quickly respond to emails and calls. They smile. How refreshing. Also, Dr. Mustoe himself responded quickly via text to important post-surgery care questions. He's a very, very busy surgeon who works incredibly hard. You will not be disappointed by this surgeon. He's phenomenal. If you are anywhere in the Midwest he is worth the trip. The Langham is a great place to recover if you have a few extra days. Eight months ago, I recruited Dr. Thomas Mustoe to be my plastic surgeon. Today, eight months later, he has become my hero. I am a 20 year old patient who lost 70lbs (230--160), and sought an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) to remove excess skin and fat so that my existing skin would fit my smaller body. The results speak for themselves. I walked in with a pouch of skin and (eventually, after swelling subsided), walked out with a beautiful six-pack. One friend even asked "How did you do that? How did you get your stomach to look so good?" Family, friends, and even my general practitioner were wowed by the elegant yet natural-looking abdomen that Dr. Mustoe created just for me. Yet great results alone do not an expert surgeon make. I believe the process is just as crucial. As such, I've chosen to share next my personal yet educational journey of surgery and recovery with Dr. Mustoe as my advocate for health, beauty, and comfort. When I first met Dr. Mustoe, I requested a thigh lift, body lift (buttocks) as well as a tummy tuck--3 procedures total. At that time (I realize now), I was a bit obsessive about removing skin and fat, having won a painstaking battle against 70lbs of fat on my own over the past year. Dr. Mustoe explained that the abdomniplasty (the most obviously "deformed" area) should be fixed first (which I had asked for), and that he would "keep the dialogue open" about the other procedures, although he seemed against the idea of them, as the benefits would be small but the risks high. He did not say no, however, and maintained sensitivity and open-mindedness to my wishes. Sensing that I may be an anxious individual, he prescribed a sedative for me to take on the day of surgery, which I greatly appreciated. It allowed me to relax when arriving for my tummy tuck, as I know I would have been nervous and apprehensive otherwise. After the surgery, since he knew I attend school out of state, he even invited me to visit him in his home to check up on me over the weekend, as I couldn't easily make it back during the week. These actions proved to my family and I the great deal of empathy and care that lies in Dr. Mustoe's heart. Now, I have realized that a body lift and thigh lift would not be worth the tradeoff of a huge scar; Dr. Mustoe was correct. I thanked him for his integrity after coming to this realization. He is a man of supreme integrity in a field that has been referred to, even by practitioners within it, as a "buy'ers beware market". I am what some people may call a "trust fund kid", with very successful parents, and a less integrative physician could have easily performed $20,000 more surgery (body/thigh lift), giving me what I thought I wanted, but he instead did what was best for me in the long run by insisting I take time to think about it, even though the financial implications would have meant little to my decision. I was blessed to be in the hands of Dr. Mustoe. His triad of care, integrity, unequaled skill, and extensive research-based contribution to his field have made a positive impact on my life. To him, I will forever be grateful. Because I have not had the chance to evaluate other plastic surgeons, I cannot say whether another may be as qualified, caring, meticulous, or sensitive as Dr. Mustoe. There may exist his equal. But I can say with absolute certainty that he has no superior. Dr. Mustoe is not the physician you go to to save money, to "roll the dice" on results, or even get a "good result". Within 2 weeks of delivering my second child, I was diagnosed with both breast & ovarian cancer. I went from being pregnant to being put into menopause (I underwent a hysterectomy for the ovarian cancer) & I had a bilateral mastectomy in a mater of weeks.
