Not what I hoped for…read more I was visiting Oslo from the USA and thought it might be cool to check out an "American" BBQ joint on the 4th of July. WDS makes a big deal on their website about making reservations and what it serves large groups as the try to have enough cooked meat on hand. I was traveling solo so I emailed the week before to make sure I could get a table- no problem they said. When I got there the had to check if seating was available though the restaurant was half full at best. Service - The guys handling the seating sounded American but were not particularly friendly or welcoming. I'm pretty sure by my voice and appearance they knew I was from the States, but made no comment. My actual waiter was fine - friendly and attentive. Food- Shame on me for ordering a burger at a BBQ place- should have had the brisket. Still this smoked burger was undercooked for my liking and not particularly flavorful. Maybe their other barbecued meats are phenomenal-don't know. They promote themselves as a southern bbq experience-one wall is covered with a mural of the USA south, highlighting the regional bbq's. I have had better food and hospitality at dozens of bbq joints throughout the South. I accept part of the blame as maybe my expectations were too high. Just feels like an opportunity missed. All the local diners seemed to be enjoying themselves so they must be doing something right?

The ice cream and brownie was exceptional. So rich and warm it was like a molten lava cake. Ice cream was brown cheese flavored and it definitely did taste like it a bit.

I don't usually have the habit to go for the same on the menu each time, but the chickenburger here…read moreis amazingly good. The chicken is breed the old fashion way- Breath of fresh air, fresh oat, wheat and corn and this combination makes the meat so juicy and tender. The burger itself is boneless (they remove bones), coleslaw, bbq sauce and a good dressing on top of a amazingly good bun. The bun actually makes the whole difference. It's so moist and tasty when you let the burger sit for a minute(if you got the patience to wait), it just suck up all of the good dressing and bbq sauce and that combined with the juicy chicken just makes it even better. I tend to go for the burger whenever I'm down at the local football pub watching a game and I combine this meal with a Brooklyn Lager. Good taste combined. The service is also great. No mocking around. Quick and done. Since they started up their local shoppe at Mathallen, the price has risen from a comfortable 60NOK to 90NOK. I personally think that's a little steep but I can't resist it. It's worth it. They also got a good chicken sandwich, but I've never eaten it. (Never change a winning team) but I've heard it's also very good. It's not only burgers and sandwiches at Stangeriet, they also sell wings, thighs and whole chickens. It's definitely worth a try and a chicken for sunday supper is a winner.

[[UPDATED REVIEW: September 2022]]…read more 'Ello chaps! Return trip a few years later to a hip "Southern American" restaurant in the artsy district of Oslo, a short bus ride (or even walk) from downtown. As someone from the southern United States, where folks are judged on their fried chicken and BBQ, Lucky Bird hits it out of the park. Simply some of the BEST fried chicken I've ever had -- ANY WHERE. The chicken was perfectly moist, and the breading was crispy without feeling heavy or overly oily. The creamed corn and mashed potatoes were top notch. The only complaint about Lucky Bird is that there weren't more locations around Oslo. This is certainly a gem hiding in plain site. On the return trip the fried chicken was still living up to the standard. Delicious. Overall the sides can really put a dent in your wallet, so you want to be careful with your order. Oh, and the tea - don't order it if you're expecting a traditional southern American sweet tea. Their tea is not that. It's a mix of tea and lemonade it tasted like. This was also one of the few restaurants in Norway we found to have full service (meaning a server took your order) Overall I give Lucky Bird five stars out of five.

I had an order of 8 wings. The wings were covered in a sweet BBQ sauce. I liked it very much. My friend ordered popcorn chicken and mashed potatoes. She didn't like her meal. But, I thought it was okay. Service was polite, but very slow. Overall, I thought it was fine. 3 stars.

Migrated from a small basement to soaring ceilings and 45 seats, the open kitchen with lots of fire stretched in front of a larger one in back, Katla utilizes mostly local ingredients but bold flavors and family-style service to impart a vibe matched to 80s rock playing a bit too loudly overhead. Quite the opposite of "New Nordic," Atli's cooking more focused on Meat and Salt than Flowers or fermentation, it is with Frozen Margaritas in hand that most guests get started on small bites including August's Pork Rinds matched to Bacon Aioli and Crab Tostadas complimented by creamy Avocado. Lighted by lamps and expansive windows, service not particularly friendly but efficient, course three finds Turnips softened by Milk amidst Mussels and Roe while its follow-up of spicy Prawns are good are their own but better atop fluffy freshly steamed Bao. Loading everything with Umami, quite unlike his Scandinavian contemporaries, Turbot arrives next in a sizable portion flecked with char, each bite picked or sucked from the bone nicely cooked and ready to be eaten on its own or augmented by condiments including Salsa, Peppers or Rice. Open late at the bar, Pepper Crab a favorite amongst walk-ins choosing to eat a la carte, Katla's Duck Mole eats every bit as earthy and aromatic as many in Mexico while Dessert of housemade Chips, Coconut Sorbet and piquant Chocolate is as tasty as it is simple.
