Awesome atmosphere and friendly faces always gets my attention and dollar! Didn't know if it was going to be a typical BBQ spot or a place with an awesome flavor! I started with the bread and humus! Delicious! Humus; creamy with a cucumber and pickle flavor. Next I had an awesome bowl of "Garlic mushrooms", grilled and sauteed with an awesome savory taste! I will never forget! My final dish is the calzon with Italian sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, cheese and green peppers! It's probably too much food, but there's always takeout! Just know that you get Big bang for your buck! I chased it down with bottled water and a glass of rose wine! With love, Chef ElJai'

There is now another restaurant also called Wood Oven on George lane, closer to the station; same owners maybe, but a different, more upmarket looking vibe. The ambient is informal and noisy in a good, cheerful way; perhaps not the place for an intimate meal, but if you want to enjoy a lively evening you're in the right place. They don't take reservations, but the restaurant have enough seats so the turnover is quick and you won't have to wait ages. In the winter, avoid if possible the tables next to the door to the loos (by the way loos are located outside, at the back) to avoid drafts from people who were born in a barn and leave it wide open. All the ingredients are fresh, and the meat is cooked to perfection, never dry or overcooked. I often get falafel for starters, nice texture and really tasty. I love the lamb shish; I even managed to convert my mother who said she didn't like lamb. Do try the Wood Oven Special if you aren't sure of what to order; it combines lamb and chicken shish, kofta, lamb chops/ribs, chicken wings, rice and salad and serves (well) two people. The rice deserves special mention, SO fluffy and flavoursome. Staff is lovely, smiley and accommodating. Once we were politely asked if we could change tables in order to allow a family to combine two tables and sit together; we happily obliged and got a free extra dish as a treat. Sweet.

The motiff of the place is very nice, very islandy. I really expected more traditional dishes served... Everything was over priced ( 1 patty for £5.10 ) of course I tried it and it was ok... Oh and no standard beef patty.. lamb or chicken. So everything on the menu i would consider some kind of 'fusion' - definitely not what I expected. Here's what we ordered, a chicken patty (great crust but mushy inside) , jerk chicken (decent) , festival (horrible, was like a churro filled with cinnamon) , fried plantains (great), rice n peas (ok) - when we were done, twice I told the lady I wanted to have dessert but I was brought the bill instead. Unfortunately, I cannot give Levi more than a 2 star.

Levi Roots Carribean Smokehouse, Westfield Stratford City - Apart from the three major food courts…read moreinside Westfield Stratford City, there are plenty of restaurants outside of the shopping complex. Most are chain restaurants - Jamie's Italian, Shake Shack, Busaba Eathai, Ping Pong - so, first impression of Levi Roots Carribean Smokehouse was, just another chain restaurant nestled in the shopping bazaar of Westfield Stratford. Why? Because of Levi Roots. Firstly, it was his musical background, followed by his Levi Reggae sauces and now, a Carribean eatery. Not knowing much about him, I assumed that it was just a stardom restaurant. Until, we had a chat, dinner and photo! But, tonight we are here to judge the food. We each had a three course meal (I felt that two course meal would have been plenty) - a starter of street foods, mains of stews, barbecue and rasta food and dessert. The difficulty was to choose just one dish for each of the courses. The menu had a good selection of meat and fish dishes, crowd pleaser favourites under the "Beach Shack Bickle" section carry a twist of the Carribean flavours and a great kids menu. The menu was quite daunting but much easier to handle once it was explained to us. The rasta food, I am not familiar with this, sounded more of a challenge to the chef. In short it was described as vegan food without the seasoning. I was intrigued and wanted to try but could not resist their short ribs (£13.50). beef short rib 2 bone in Smokehouse jerk sauce £13.50 - cut open the blackened meat with a glistening sauce gives the a succulent pink meat. It was nice but quite fatty. On the drinks menu, their cocktails were curated by Ian Barrell, UK Rum Ambassador. My Jamaican Mule (£6.90) wasn't as gingery as described and could do with being colder. Others loved their Reggae Rum Punch (£7.90). ackee and saltfish £5.50 - a generous portion of Jamaica's national dish. The flavours were very light and clean, taste were very well balanced with the tangy, salt and pepper and a light hint of chilli. Makes a substantial salad, but what I did not like was that the salted fish stuck between my teeth as I chew. levi's fried chicken £5.50 - those chicken strips looked like it has been dried out from frying but I bite into the most tender piece of chicken. The crunchy batter on the outside holds the Asian sweet sticky chilli sauce which I thought would have been better served with their own Levi Root sauce. bajan fish cakes £5.50 - the fish cakes had a proportion of more flour batter to the fish. Still, it gave a very light taste. curry goat £13.50 - a plate of creamy coconut sauce with chunks of succulent meat. It was not a huge portion but had lots of that creamy coconut sauce for the rice and roti! carribean ice-cream of rum and raisin, mango and soursop £4.90 - rum and raisin tasted more milky and creamy than of rum. Mango and soursop was not too sweet but the taste was quite obvious from a packet.

Masters at Work and now nostalgic funky house, amazing cocktails, it felt like a meat and greet party and a party happened to my taste buds and we all had a good time. Sparkly waiters, Sparkly YES signs congratulating me on my decision to come here, do I want a massive meat portion and delicious hearty salad? YES! The buffalo wings were tantalisingly tangy, lip lickingly spicy and is that some sort of Amaretto glaze I detected, I dunno but it was darn good. The hazelnut, mixed seed and beets were also mega tasty, I can't believe I cheated on Dukes Brew, but this joint ain't gonna be around much longer. The watermelon margarita that went by the name of My Soul Happiness screamed summertime. Smoke wafted off the bbqs inside a shipping container and made sure my nose knew what season it was as well. Smokey Tails wanted me to forget the miserable rainy mess that was the day before and it was doing a great job. The menu is short but it was still hard to decide between buffalo or bbq wings, ribs or pulled pork. Then you need to choose whether to get them "snack" style or with two veg sides. And if that doesn't fill you up, you can found everything off with American style baked beans or mac & cheese. I'd heard great things about the pulled pork, but I bypassed it for the snack sized buffalo wings and ribs with a side of potato salad and cherry tomatoes. I wished I had a bigger stomach and a higher metabolism because the beans and mac both looked phenomenal and were getting rave reviews from the other tables. The wings were large, juicy things with a sauce that tasted like football Sunday fare in the States. I never thought I'd say this, but they weren't served with blue cheese dressing and I didn't miss it at all. The ribs had a sweet honey note, but one that wasn't cloying and there was a slight building heat in the sauce. Sides were a fresh, bright break from the piles of meat on the table. I washed it all down with a can of Flying Dog IPA. Sure, it was expensive at £5.50, but good bbq demands a good beer. I would have lingered until I was hungry again, but unfortunately the wasps chased me away. The staff tried their best to help, even fashioning a makeshift wasp catcher with two plastic cups and some sugar syrup, but the winged beasts were undeterred. Seems I'm not the only one who likes this place.
