A group of us decided to get tattoos after work one day and we chose the Grimm Tattoo and Bert Grimm Museum. It was a great experience. The place was clean, the artists were talented, efficient, and kind. About 10 of got tattoos and we were in and out within a couple hours and there were only 3 artists working that day. We loved our tattoos. The whole place was a vibe. I definitely recommend checking out this historic establishment if you are looking for a tattoo shop in the area. They are cash only, but they have an ATM on site. However, it would be better to bring your own cash. The ATM doesn't charge a flat fee. It charges a percentage of the amount you're withdrawing. They are also right next to a bar and a couple eateries if you wanna get a quick bite before or after you get inked. read more

I recently got a fine-line smiley face tattoo on my finger and unfortunately didn't have the experience I hoped for. The artist was friendly, but when I reached out about the tattoo fading unevenly within the first week, I felt like my concerns weren't really heard. I completely understand that finger tattoos fade and require touch-ups--this was explained to me. However, the issue I brought up wasn't just normal fading. The eyes of the tattoo healed perfectly and are still clear a month later, while the smile line faded almost immediately, which suggested it wasn't put in deep enough during the initial appointment. When I tried to communicate this, the response I received felt dismissive and didn't acknowledge the specific issue I was pointing out. Instead, I was told repeatedly that "finger tattoos always fade," even though half of the tattoo healed just fine. I'm not upset about needing a touch-up--I know that's common with fine-line finger tattoos. What frustrated me was the lack of listening and understanding. A little acknowledgement and a willingness to look at what I was actually pointing out would have gone a long way. I hope this helps improve communication for future clients, because the tattoo design itself was super cute, and I really wanted this to be a positive experience. read more

DO NOT GO HERE AND GIVE THESE PEOPLE MONEY!!!!!!! Not only did we have an absolutely terrible experience, but they misuse paperwork to scare people into not leaving bad reviews by saying they looked up peoples names, knowing that peoples addresses are on their paperwork. My friends and I met at a central point to get together and catch up as we hadn't seen each other in a really long time, some of us drove 2+ hours To meet in KCMO. We picked this specific smaller Grimm's because we had had a positive experience at the bigger Grimm's tattoo parlor and this one had multiple good reviews; Now we believe they are just flagging and deleting bad reviews. I've never had a tattoo artist be so disrespectful, demanding, degrading, and unwilling to work with design ideas and creative suggestions in my life before going here. They were high the entire time and we brushed it off as maybe we were just imagining the smell. We came in with some newer style ideas for tattoos understanding that they primarily did so we stayed. After presenting our tattoo designs, we were fought tooth and nail because they were not traditional styles; They told us that they needed to be bigger. Things needed to be left out. It just wasn't possible, and when we agreed to let them redesign and rework the tattoos, they attempted to force us to go three or four times bigger than what we had originally wanted, and it was almost completely traditional tattooing. We had to fight to come to a "middle ground" And then we set with a more traditional version because we had been there for multiple hours and at that point just wanted the tattoos because we had worked so hard to get them. The tattoo artist told one of my friends that the tattoo wasn't too big and wouldn't change the size anymore after she had made a comment about maybe going down one more size even offering to take certain pieces off to make it more doable. He told her no and that it was staying that size. She settled for that size. We legitimately spent almost 2 hours just trying to get them to come up with a design that they would do on our bodies and almost none of our input ended up being in the final tattoos. looking back, we all wish we would have just walked out but in the moment we just wanted to get the tattoos that we had planned to get together to commemorate getting together and seeing each other after a really long time, so we all settled. Once the tattooing started, it was rushed, and we had to play by their rules only. We were not allowed to comfort for each other, hold each other's hands, stand next to each other, sit next to each other, Or any form of being there for each other, even though every other tattoo shop, we have gone together too has allowed it; seeing as all of the group suffers from anxiety. What made it worse is if they had just looked at us and said we don't do newer styles we all would've said OK and just picked some thing in a traditional style that was on the flash or off the top of our heads but instead they lied and said that they would do it in our style and then proceeded to change everything about said style. Overall, I have never hated a tattoo experience more than this one. It makes me sad that they're ruining Grimms Legacy by treating customers and fellow tattoo, enthusiasts this way, and that is just from what I experienced, not including the fact that my friends tattoos are all having to be retouched and fixed because there was gaps, unconnected lines, shaky lines, random black marks where they just hit our bodies with the tattoo machines; All things that will cost us even more money to fix after we already paid a large amount to get these tattoos. read more

My experience at the shop itself was lovely. Our artist was professional, sweet and so skilled! Katie is a gem! The pricing is what threw me for a loop. I went with a friend and got a very small (1.25" long) thin scratch style 'key' and 5 dots. I am professional and I try to be courteous, though I mistakenly forgot to ask they price before it was put on my bodyI knew it wouldn't be more than $60-$70. I was charged $100. Surely this had to be a mistake because my friend who came with me got a much larger, much more detailed key and was charged $60. Both of our pieces are on our upper arms, and her tattoo, with shading, took longer than mine. I thought we had a really nice time with the associates there, but I feel I was taken advantage of since it's clear I don't know the tattoo sub-culture. I went in last week to get a tattoo with a friend from out of state. The lady that tattooed me was very rude to begin with. Waited about two hours for my friends tattoo to even be created before the lady began tagging her. Them waited over an hour for mine to be drawn. Well I've started a sleeve and she pressed the needle so far in my skin that after looking at the website I can see why. Not a black person at all being shed light on at that shop. The website alone looks racist. She made it a point to speak on racism while I was in the chair. It was not needed. I came for a tattoo. I know no one in that racist shop cares or will do anything about it. But if you're black id go to Bleeding Heart where they handle us with care. The attitudes in the shop are racist. Mind you we spend over 500$ You don't have to be like that towards people but I am going to the doctor TONIGHT the emergency room to have my arm examined and if there is anything wrong with my skin I will be suing the shop! My arm is so sore. I have 26 tattoos and I know that after three days my scanning should be gone if not almost gone. But because she feels nooone can say anything to her and her attitude is so cold she didn't wanna take advise about our own skin so now there are two black woman with bumps rising all over our tattoos. I came with very high hopes, having heard and seen amazing reviews of this shop. Came in for a consultation and set a date. I arrived 20 minutes early, and was okay with the fact that by the time I saw my artist walk in it was 30 minutes past the scheduled time. I became slightly annoyed when left almost immediately after walking in, without even acknowledging me. By the time time he walked in a second time 20 minutes later, bag of fast food in hand, I was frustrated. It took another 20 minutes before he called me over to set up. Getting close to him, he REEKED of marijuana. I (foolishly) gave him benefit of the doubt, if he was this bold, it must not disturb his work. I was wrong. My tattoo is shaky, disconnected, freehanded lines, sloppy, and overall trashy. It was a VERY simple concept, I never had a lingering thought it would turn out bad. I would like to speak about even a partial refund, but after numerous times of calling the shop without even an answer, I don't have expect much. Disgustingly unprofessional. Grimms was the first local shop I had ever been to ... when it was kn the mainstreet location ... some 25 years ago. Since then, I have stopped in periodically at their new location on Broadway. While there has always been a sort of "attitude " at Grimm (as with almost every shop I have been to, this shop was disappointing. As one of the only local shops that offer late night hours, you would think the atmosphere would encourage walk ins. Not th case here. Once I walked in later in the night and a man said "hey man, we are done for the night". Fine. I told them I was actually just seeing if the piercer was around. I understand not wanting to start working close to closing, but chasing people out is not neccesarily the best way to do it ... and if you are truly done... then turn OFF the open sign. On another visit, this time,.with more time to spare .. after working with a guy on a design (same guy by the way), when I continued to ask for his opinion, he quipped back at me something about it being late and us running out of time. Again, fine. Then say come back tomorrow. Not let me draw something up for you in 15 minutes and then get it done within the next half hour. The other staff were nice by the way. Long story short. I wont go back and I wont reccomend. Not saddens me that the once local charm of the shop has been replaced with a drive by window front shop with more attitude than quality. The shop is unorganized and sloppy looking. One final note. I am no prude ... but the marijuana was reeking out of the office behind desk. read more

I booked an appointment with Rachel Cross when my fiance bought me a Groupon for a piercing. First, not a big deal but when I got there, she didn't know what I was there to get done, even though I had typed it in when I booked. Just weird that she doesn't read that. The biggest issue, however, started when I had forgotten my ID. I later realized I had accidentally put it in my pocket instead of back in my wallet after using it the day before, but the point is I didn't have it and she said she wouldn't do the piercing without a photocopy of my current ID. I even had my last driver's license on me, but she said that wouldn't work. I had booked the appointment specifically before going on vacation. I knew I'd have more free time to keep it clean, and I could show it off to my friends back home. Awesome. Except... not so awesome, because the Groupon expired while I was out of state. I asked her if it would be a problem if I rescheduled that day for when I got back. So it would be booked (but not used) before the expiration date. She said the best she could do was give me the value paid, but not the deal value. So essentially make it a gift certificate that I would have to pay an upcharge to use. It really leaves a bad taste in my mouth that she was so unaccomadating. I am a service provider and have used Groupon. I (and most who use Groupon) will allow you to keep the deal value as long as you have booked within an appropriate amount of time. I'm not hard to please, and I tip well. I just want to be treated like a valued client. It's unfortunate that I still have to look for someone to do that. Luckily, Groupon felt the same way and refunded my fiance. read more

Poor service, unprofessional, and inexperienced. Did not take the time to stencil the image. Used the color grey to shade. Used one needle to shade. Used one needle to thicken an outline. DID NOT USE VASELINE. (Check out story below) I was really excited to get an american traditional heart tattoo with two of my closest friends. I showed one of the associates the tattoo we wanted and rather than take the image and take the time to trace it line by line. It definitely didn't match the image I gave her, but I was told that it was just for the outline and that it would not look like that. I trusted them and proceeded with the process. I was told Rachel would be tattooing us and wanted to check out her portfolio beforehand. All of my other tattoos are american traditional so I was looking for someone who specializes in that style. She didn't have a hard copy, but she did have an Instagram. I didn't see any american traditional tattoos, so I decided to go with Todd who seemed to have a lot of experience in tattooing in that style by looking at his portfolio. As we began the process, he stenciled the same heart tattoo and placed it on my arm and told me I would have to "wait 10 minutes for it to dry in order for him to begin tattooing". I have never known any artist to do that, but I didn't judge. Ten minutes later, he starts to tattoo me using NO VASELINE. I asked him if there was a reason that he wasn't using any Vaseline and he told me that "it's because using too much vaseline will make the ink go away". Todd's gloves were completely dry. When I looked over to actually see the tattoo, the outline was way too thin. I asked him if he was going to thicken it and he asked if I wanted him too. I said, "yes, i'm looking for it to match the thickness of my other ones". He checked them out and literally used the same needle to go over the first outline twice and to start shading. I told him to stop at that point because I felt that he didn't know what he was doing. Rachel was the only other artist available so I asked if she could finish it. I understand that this is a big no no in the tattoo world but at that point I just wanted what I paid for. Rachel was flexible and kind enough to finish it but she had also made a mistake by mixing the color grey to use for shading. At first I thought she was using white to give it some highlights like my other ones but she wasn't. I wouldn't advise anyone to get a tattoo from Todd. I started to question his portfolio when I compared it to his wall of designs. One thing that stood out the most was that the anatomy in most of his animals and characters were off. It was a very disappointing experience overall. I gave them one star for pricing but that's it. I was really upset to have to pay for something I did not ask for. It literally looks like a rock on my arm and nothing like a heart. read more

I had an appointment with Rachael Cross this afternoon and man....I am really digging my new ink!! The atmosphere is laid back, I am already looking forward to going back!! Okay I am back for an edit!! I know the initial review was rather blah...hey I was in a hurry and didn't want to forget!! So here it goes...I had an appt. at 1pm. I arrived early and she was still drawing my piece up (a cross) and a chest tattoo with my husbands name. shortly after 1 I was in the chair ready to get inked!! Even though i was very tired and not much of a conversationalist at first, Rachael was very personable and we chatted the entire time I was there (3 hours). Wes (I believe he he the head honcho around there) was also pretty effing entertaining- great stories- just ask him about Bob Berdella! The shop mascot is a parrot- his name is Sailor. He just perches atop Wes' shoulder and kind of just hangs out. The walls are adorned with tattoed people, especially servicemen. The original tattoo lady Betty Broadbent is also there- I bet she was an interesting topic of conversation in her day!! All in all I have some new ink that I love!! I actually like this place, but Danny, one of the tattoo artists was very very disrespectful and rude. She was making fun of what I wanted, and it was meangiful to me as to it being a reminder. It had a background story to me, and she completely disrespected me. When I was just concerned and how I wanted it on my body after she had put it on me with the stencil if she could change it a little, and completely through a fit. Grow up.
