I recently moved to Austin and quickly discovered this local gem. This is a real sandwich shop that prepares your meal with pride and detail, and serves it up in butcher paper and masking tape. Careful when you open the paper, there is a small handful of Gardetto's snack mix as a garnish. This place is also CHEAP. The sandwiches and subs are all $5 or less as far as I can tell. Traditional staples like deli roast beef and turkey, as well as outstanding egg salad. Everyone says their caramel bars are to-die-for but I found that I actually prefer the O'Henry Bar. And don't even get me started on the Carrot Cake... HEAVENLY! They are only open from 11-3 weekdays and Saturdays so plan accordingly. The line moves SLOWLY and many people call in their order so be prepared to wait during the lunch rush... Or call ahead yourself and have the sandwich ready when you arrive. Bonus: outdoor seating! I love this place! Parking out front is street parking only but there are several slots marked 15 min parking for you. They are not fast by any means but the wait is worth it!!!! Today we got three original grinders, two with the secret grinder mayo sauce and one with the oil sauce. All came with lettuce, tom, cheese, pepperoni, salami and ham. It's amazing!!!!! Three grinders were cam to $14. Yeah you heard me right, $14. Can't beat that price for three subs. The building is in the middle of a neighborhood and looks like a converted house donuts a unique setting. The food rocks here. Give it a go!!!! read more

If you ever have the misfortune of driving through Austin, Minnesota looking for lunch, then I will say this is about your only option. I found myself in this situation recently. About my only other option for food was to see if a nearby bank was giving out complimentary suckers. It was a depressing ordeal. But I found this place. It looks like Grinders Deli is just an old house turned deli. And they make sandwiches about like my Mom does. I got one that tasted a lot like... like a sandwich. That's about all there is to it. Well made simple sandwiches, paired with fantastic desert bars. Homemade, quality sandwich bread and sub bread around a set of standard sandwich fillings. Think Subway, but much fresher bread and ingredients. For example, the egg salad sandwich was wonderfully light. You can choose from Magic Sauce or Secret Sauce, both subtly good. But if you go, you have to pair your sandwich with a bar. The carmel bars are a must. When you reach for a desert bar after Christmas dinner, what you hope for is a bar as good as the Grinder Deli's caramel bar. You're usually disappointed by the bar after Christmas, but the bar at Grinders will leave you smiling all afternoon. read more

I always get the grinder sub and double the meat. The only reason this deli does not get five stars is no debit, all cash or check. Lame. Great local sandwich shop! Went today for the first time and got the grinder. Was a little concerned because I'm a turkey on wheat girl and I don't step outside that box often, but I'm glad I did. This place has fabulous food (the baked-daily fresh bread is a particular favorite of mine) fairly reasonable prices, and friendly staff. Nice, local owned place that is an Austin tradition. Be aware: this is NOT the place to go for fast meals. There's only 2 people working at any given time and a huge number of people who all love this restaurant. I found this place through an internet search and was super excited to try it. I should have read more than the first few reviews, as it turns out they don't accept debit cards and I never carry cash on me.
