Gringo Cafe! And there were a whole lot of Gringos lol! It's in a cute are of Ipanema and a few blocks away from the beach. We sat in there inside/outside area and there was so much natural light! Went to Gringo Cafe to eat some American breakfast as I was feeling homesick. The waffles were so crispy and fluffy. The bacon was cooked to perfection. Only thing was that the hash browns could have been a little bit more cooked and brown. Service was very friendly, although at the end it was very hard to flag down our waiter to pay. As much as I love traveling, sometimes one misses the comfort of food from home. Also a menu in English was nice for my companion, who doesn't speak Portuguese. The place is small. No frills. But the food was really good, as were our coffees. Decent portion sizes. Good value for the price. I was highly amused at the theme and decor. They even had American delicacies like real maple syrup for sale as novelties. Definitely recommend any misplaced Americans check this place out! read more

Really nice American style cafe in rio- cute street too! Loved it. Tiny place so perhaps it's good to go during an odd hour. Nice little tables spaced pretty close. The service isn't great (takes forever to get food and attention) but the meals are great. The al day breakfast is typical upscale diner food- excellent eggs and hashbrowns. Their biscuits are dreamy. They also have giant cake slices all homemade. The vegetarian dishes are excellent- I loved the veggie chili with homemade cornbread. Pretty decent coffee too. I know they have cocktails but I have only ever had that- too early :) read more

If you are a native English speaker who knows people in Rio de Janeiro, you've likely heard of this place. But I want to warn you that while the menu boasts American classics like bacon and french toast, they are NOT what you think. They are made with Brazilian ingredients, making the textures and sometimes the flavors all wrong. The bacon is not crispy or even browned for that matter. Some gringos love it. THIS gringa does not. They have indoor and outdoor seating - fully equipped with a big fan mister. Love their decor & atmosphere - reminded me of home. For dinner - they weren't busy at all so we were seated immediately. All the indoor/outdoor tables were taken and guests were enjoying their share of waffles and pancakes and omelets - not to mention flutes of mimosas. Exactly what it's name is - the hot spot for American food in Rio. At first, I wondered why some people in our group were so excited to come here but this was the closest to authentic American breakfast they were going to get without heading to the states (they were from Nigeria). I come here sometimes on Saturdays and Sundays to cure a hangover. Have had both lunch and breakfast plates and you can do yourself a favor by skipping over the lunch items. Burger was bland and the chili was neither spicy nor flavorful. But breakfast is where it's at - with one exception (we'll come back to that). The hash browns, eggs, and bacon are exactly what you'd expect from a place in the U.S. and are really good. The French toast is amazing. Two things: 1 - the sausage is not the same kind of breakfast sausage you'd find in the U.S. It's the usual Brazilian linguiça. It's not bad, but just so you know what you're getting. 2 - eggs Benedict. What they are calling "eggs Benedict" is not accurate. It should have a poached egg and ham on an English muffin covered in hollandaise sauce. What you'll get is a poached egg on top of bacon on top of a piece of toast, covered in a sauce. It also isn't bad, but it's not eggs Benedict. You can't change 3/4 of the recipe and call it the same thing. Simple fix here: change the name. read more

Gringo Cafe is one of those rare gems you find when travelling that make you feel like you're at home. My husband and I explored Brazil for a month living off far more than our fair share of Brazilian cuisine. We were craving some good ol' American fare. Imagine our delight when we stumbled across Gringo Cafe! . We were greeted by friendly staff, many of whom spoke English. I ordered the Country Style breakfast - pancakes (not easy to find), eggs (cooked any way you like them - also a rarity) & crispy bacon. Good food that satisfied our cravings. Breakfast is served all day as well as options like hamburgers, salads & large dinner platters. The chili is also a favorite. Nice place to meet other travelers. There are plugs for your laptop and Wi-Fi so you can work while sipping on the only American style coffee I've found in Rio (except for Starbucks). No need to order Brazil's standard thimble-sized espresso that keeps you awake for 2 days. I came back on Thanksgiving because I was without family and wanted some turkey and stuffing. Of course it wasn't my mother's 5 course, 10 side-dish affair but the meal was really good, affordable & best of all, I didn't feel alone. It was packed with other people unable to be with their loved ones so the restaurant transformed into big groups of foreigners and locals eating, drinking, laughing & swapping stories. My husband and I loved Rio so much that we decided to move here. Gringo Café is now one of my regular hang-outs. I strongly suggest stopping by. Enjoy! read more

Great spot to get reliably good food. I had been avoiding lettuce and greens that were likely to be rinsed in the local unfiltered water, so my chopped salad was just what I was craving. Prices are slightly higher than some of the local spots, but for an easy and tasty meal, made quickly, it is well worth it. It's small, so you might have to wait for a table.
