Remember, eating here is not just for food, its also about the history. I ordered Steak, farofa, vinagrete (which is like pico de gallo without peppers) french fries, rice and a caipirinha (Brazilian rum, lime and sugar). The food is always on point but I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it falls a notch short of Assador. Don't let that stop you though. I go here every time that I am in Rio. The ambiance and service of this place make it great. I wouldn't want to see an Ipanema without this place. If you decide to eat the pepper sauce be careful, its extra hot. Note: This is also an awesome place to sit and have beers or cocktails and watch a soccer game etc. Don't forget to request The Girl from Ipanema as you dine here.

This is the kind of restaurant you'll want to visit while in Rio! They offer mostly bar food, but very good bar food. They have lots of steak and potato type options, but try the feijoada if you have a partner to help finish it. A hungry single person can finish it all with effort. It's designed for two people and is a very good dish. You'll love the smokey savory flavor, but be careful with bones. They give you a lemoncello to start as an appetizer if you're of age. Service is prompt but not over bearing. They don't speak English but do understand some Spanish. Credit cards are accepted. There is no air conditioning but the semi outdoor seating has tons of fans so you'll mostly be comfortable unless you eat very hot food. I'd return any time!

This place was highly recommend but unfortunately was a disappointment. Located near the beach and easy to walk to from there. The service was excellent. Our server spoke a little English and was very friendly. We were seated quickly and our food came out pretty quick as well. I ordered the grilled chicken with creamy rice. Chicken was definitely not grilled and was fried. Chicken was pretty dry, very fatty and extremely salty. Creamy rice was not what I was expecting and had a weird taste to it. My wife ordered the beef stroganoff and it was made with a tomato sauce. It reminded me of a canned ravioli sauce. Was expecting a mushroom style sauce for a stroganoff. The codfish croquettes were excellent. Definitely the best thing we had and would order those again. Prices were on the higher side but portions were huge, we had enough for 2 full meals. I would like to give this place another shot but next time would order a steak instead.

Visiting from Miami; went for drinks. Truly the BEST Caipirinha ever. Get the Magnifica Caipirinha. They serve it at the table and shake it there. The grilled parilla Picanha is also yummy. Very professional staff and it's the actual place where Tom Jobin and Vinicious de Moraes wrote The Girl from Ipanema. The photos are fantastic.

We were hungry for a filling, tasty meal, and we found a gem in Garota de Ipanema. The place is bright and very clean, and the service was the best we've had anywhere. Our server was polite, friendly and attentive. He offered suggestions and we were happy he did. We shared a mixed salad, a cup of black bean soup (delicious), and chicken Parmesan served with mashed potatoes. The chicken was delicious and HUGE! Combined, we could only finish a third. Chicken parm with mashed potatoes sounds weird, but the combination worked well, probably because the potatoes were so smooth and creamy. If I lived near here, I'd be a regular.

Legendary restaurant where the famous song was inspired and written. Great traditional food and meat dishes, with excellent service in a nice part of town. Ordered the big meat platter and sizzles right in front for you to finish. Loved it here!

We visited this famous restaurant on our trip to Rio a few years ago. We ordered a pizza, caipirinhas, beer and a breaded fish plate. The servers were friendly. We went on a not so busy night and there was a soccer game on. The servers were definitely into the game and it was a nice atmosphere. The pizza and the breaded fish plate was good. I actually liked the pizza more than the fish. The caipirinhas were great. The service was good and we didn't wait too long for our food. We will definitely return here in the future.

This is the restaurant of the famous song "Girl from Ipanema". Beautiful home-style restaurant. Nestled 2 blocks away from Ipanema beach, it's a great location to walk around and feel safe even at night. Ambiance: dressy casual. Lots of tourist as this is a touristy spot so if you're looking for English speakers and English menus- they have! Food: traditional Brazilian food- Their food is really good especially the grilled steak options that you can definitely share with more than 2 people. Comes with fried Greek rice, farofa, beans and massive steaks that are grilled in front of you to your liking. Thinking somewhat kbbq style cooking for Brazilian meet. Except the grill is on a tray ... and not built into the table. They have a variety of options- I would say this is the pricier side of food choices in Brasil but it was definitely worth the experience and if you can split the tray if meat its pretty affordable on the US dollar! Uber here... I have no idea where parking is. Lol. But it's also not far from the main shopping street Rua Visc. de Pirajá

This was all news to me until now, lol. The song "The Girl From Ipanema"? What?? So, this is the actual restaurant where the song was written in. Apparently the writer would see her walking to the Ipanema Beach. Hmm, kinda creepy since she was 17 and he was 40+. ATMOSPHERE: The open-air corner spot sports a blue tile roof with a bistro look. The inside has a fun vibe with music memorabilia of the infamous song. Street bands may come to the window-side tables so expect to be hounded for a tip. Seating is plentiful. MENU: Salads, seafood, meat, poultry, pasta, sandwiches, pizza, dessert. Very overwhelming menu. The popular dishes were the meats that are grilled at your table on portable grills, but we wanted something light. FOOD: Caldo Verde - $7. I had no idea what to expect as the "Portuguese-style soup" they make is probably different than the one I'm used to in Hawaii. I took a chance and was positively rewarded! The soup was pale in color like miso soup, with bits of ham, slices of cabbage leaves and potato. Very good flavor with savory and veggie notes. Stroganoff de Filet Mignon - $21. We were expecting the traditional cream-based gravy but instead received an orange-colored sauce that was sweet. Though the meat was tender, we couldn't get past the sweetness and threw in the towel not even halfway through. Pass. SERVICE: Nothing outstanding. Like at most places in Rio, you need to ask for your bill. Oddly, our male server asked for a cash tip even though I was paying with a credit card. After simply stating that I had no cash, he pushed everything through. TIPS: Try to pay with cash. My credit card got compromised while in Rio and I'm not sure where it happened, so this tip appears on all my reviews where I paid with it. Free WiFi if you sign in via your FB or email account. I am now receiving promo emails from them. Spam button! The table where the song was written is available to sit at. OVERALL: Stick to the basics like grilled meat, cool nostalgia factor.

Went as we saw it was the song where the famous girl from ipanema song was composed. Cool spot and solid food (got the Picanha and feijoada). About average compared to the others we got in Brazil.

Our server he was the nicest happiest person ever and great service

It's a iconic place in rio the food is excellent and service is over the top They cook the meat right at your table and this is the place where they came up with the song the girl from Ipanema they were sitting there and they saw this beautiful girl walking back from the beach

Feijoida Completa (R$65) easily serves 2. Served only on Saturday, per Brazilian tradition, along with the traditional sides.

Q: When an infamous and enduring song is penned in a particular location and you have the opportunity to dine in that location is that enough reason to merit a visit? A: When the food is this meaty good, by all means, go. "Garota de Ipanema", if you hadn't already guessed, translates into "Girl from Ipanema". It's the site where the lyrics and music were penned, inspired by a young, beautiful Helô Pinheiro passing by each day en route to Ipanema Beach which is 1 short block from here. These days it's a casual, inviting, open restaurant with musical instruments and musical scores on the walls and the enticing scent of meat wafting through the air. Between three diners we shared Feijoada (R$85), Lombinho a Gaucha (tenderloin + Portuguese Sausage, R$45), beer and wine, a meal which, had Helô Pinheiro consumed it with any regularity, there'd have been a lot more of her to "sway so gentle" when she passed by. No skimpy portions being served here. The grand total of our meal for 3 (tax + tip included) was R$159 or about $40 US. This is me just casting a vote here: Garota de Ipanema is a good place to eat. The three of us ate heartily, enjoyed our meaty meal and left sated. What more could one ask for? (Note: Helô Pinheiro went on to - of course - pose twice in Playboy. She has no stake in this restaurant but does own the bikini shop next door, also named Garota de Ipanema).

I had the Grilled Chicken with Broccoli rice, which initially sounded slightly strange and bland but turned out fantastic. The grilled chicken was well done but also well seasoned with savory hints of salt, pepper and onion, deliciously crisp with every bite. The strong savory chicken blends perfectly with the soothing broccoli rice side and I devoured both after a long day of hiking. The dish also came with fries (not advertised in the menu), which tasted better than most american fries and were fresh, crisp and a nice tangy complement to the meal when paired with ketchup. The entire dining experience was enjoyable and I would highly recommend this spot for future tourists and visitors of Rio!

We ordered the pizza calzone which was delicious and the calamari which I would not recommend. Calamari was heavily battered and a little fishy -- if you're used to the lightly battered style you get in the US, this will seem more like the batter they use on fried clams. The Italian sausage (check out my pic) was the highlight though. It was so good, we actually ordered a second one. And of course, being as immature as we are, we laughed at the enormous length and made a lot of dirty jokes as we ate it. Fun! The drinks are smaller here than most other places we've been but are strong. Caipirinhas were good, but we had better a couple blocks away at Porcao. The ambiance is nice with both indoor and outdoor seating. Prices are reasonable for Rio and like most restaurants in the city, they add a 10% service charge.

So we worked up an appetite and were ready to scarf down some meat. We were seated immediately and the waiter was quick to take our drink orders. I love how casual Rio is; people dining around us were in swim trunks and bikinis. So laid back--great vibes. The meats alone were pretty great, but the salad bar/buffet was a little underwhelming. I tried some sushi but it was not good. The sides that come to the table were also sub-par. I usually find myself munching on way too much bread because of how good it is, but that wasn't the case here. I really liked the steak with cheese and of course the picanha. Carretao is a great place for rodizio and the price isn't too bad. Though if I were back in Rio they wouldn't be my first choice.
