The place is located in a sweet that is not surrounded by other restaurants, so if it wasn't for my friend, I would have never known about this place! No reservations were needed, yet my party of 3 got seats as soon as we arrived, the place was packed so that's always a good sign, most people in there were local which was another indication, this place would be good! The staff were reserved but very nice and greeted us with a smile. The music was low and calm, giving it a nice ambiance. The place inside is clean and it feels like a home-like restaurant, and I instantly loved that. The Menus were large and some items have pictures (we love visuals!) they had a good selection of beverages, from wine to beer to even non-alcoholic. I decided to go for a local soda and got a Guarana. They brought it for me along a glass with ice. We ended up ordering the meat to share, along side dishes; rice/french fries, black beans, salad and Yuca. The mean is semi cooked, they bring a little grill like for you to continue cooking your meat to your liking which was nice. I was sitting directly across from it so some little bit of oil did jump on me so eye on where you place the grill! The meat was FANTASTIC, they had some fatty parts that you can totally chop off, but the meat itself was tender, thin sliced and very well seasoned so it was very flavorful. They gave us some continents to put on our meat and that definitely enhanced the flavor even more. The yuca was probably my least favorite, it seemed as if it was chopped into small little pieces and then tossed with some crumbled bread, very dry. The rice was white with some peas and carrots, very good. The French fries well... they're French fries, how can you mess that up anyway? Haha so they were fine too. The salad was really good too; and they brought us some olive oil & vinegar for it if desired. Our server checked on us periodically, we were stuffed by the end of our meal so we opt out on getting dessert. I ordered Steak, farofa, vinagrete (which is like pico de gallo without peppers) french fries, rice and a caipirinha (Brazilian rum, lime and sugar). The food is always on point but I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it falls a notch short of Assador. Don't let that stop you though. I go here every time that I am in Rio. This is the kind of restaurant you'll want to visit while in Rio! They offer mostly bar food, but very good bar food. They have lots of steak and potato type options, but try the feijoada if you have a partner to help finish it. A hungry single person can finish it all with effort. It's designed for two people and is a very good dish. You'll love the smokey savory flavor, but be careful with bones. They give you a lemoncello to start as an appetizer if you're of age. Service is prompt but not over bearing. They don't speak English but do understand some Spanish. Credit cards are accepted. This was my first trip to Rio, and this was the first restaurant where I had dinner. My girlfriend had been here nine years ago and really liked it, so we decided to try it on our first night. We ordered the Picanha à Brasileira no Rechaud--cap of rump "Brazilian" steak, sliced top sirloin (very tender beef) served with fries, rice, and manioc flour. The meat comes out stacked sideways on a sizzling hot stone pan, and you cook it yourself a few pieces at a time to your preferred doneness. Just lay the slices on the hot pan, then serve them with rice, fries, and manioc flour. Don't forget to drizzle some of the Malagueta chili oil on each bite--it makes everything pop. We were hungry for a filling, tasty meal, and we found a gem in Garota de Ipanema. The place is bright and very clean, and the service was the best we've had anywhere. Our server was polite, friendly and attentive. He offered suggestions and we were happy he did. It feel like a tourist trap, however the food is so good and many patrons are just locals. But naming the bar as one of the most famous songs in the world attracts tourist types and makes this restaurant more common that what it is. I liked seeing the photos and mementos from a Rios of the 60s so different from the one today. It was so nice to see the real garota de Ipanema had more a pinup bikini than a dental floss, it just gets classier;). The inside has a fun vibe with music memorabilia of the infamous song. Street bands may come to the window-side tables so expect to be hounded for a tip. Seating is plentiful. MENU: Salads, seafood, meat, poultry, pasta, sandwiches, pizza, dessert. Very overwhelming menu. The popular dishes were the meats that are grilled at your table on portable grills, but we wanted something light. FOOD: Caldo Verde - $7. I had no idea what to expect as the "Portuguese-style soup" they make is probably different than the one I'm used to in Hawaii. I took a chance and was positively rewarded! The soup was pale in color like miso soup, with bits of ham, slices of cabbage leaves and potato. Very good flavor with savory and veggie notes. Stroganoff de Filet Mignon - $21. We were expecting the traditional cream-based gravy but instead received an orange-colored sauce that was sweet. Though the meat was tender, we couldn't get past the sweetness and threw in the towel not even halfway through. Pass. SERVICE: Nothing outstanding. Like at most places in Rio, you need to ask for your bill. Oddly, our male server asked for a cash tip even though I was paying with a credit card. A: When the food is this meaty good, by all means, go. "Garota de Ipanema", if you hadn't already guessed, translates into "Girl from Ipanema". It's the site where the lyrics and music were penned, inspired by a young, beautiful Helô Pinheiro passing by each day en route to Ipanema Beach which is 1 short block from here. These days it's a casual, inviting, open restaurant with musical instruments and musical scores on the walls and the enticing scent of meat wafting through the air. Between three diners we shared Feijoada (R$85), Lombinho a Gaucha (tenderloin + Portuguese Sausage, R$45), beer and wine, a meal which, had Helô Pinheiro consumed it with any regularity, there'd have been a lot more of her to "sway so gentle" when she passed by. No skimpy portions being served here. The grand total of our meal for 3 (tax + tip included) was R$159 or about $40 US. This is me just casting a vote here: Garota de Ipanema is a good place to eat. The answer is simple, you go to Garota de Ipanema, have some picanha, down a couple of good caipirinha and savor in the memories, haunting rhythms and swaying sounds of bosa nova; a fusion of samba and jazz that so much captivates the spirit and feel of what is Rio. Originally "Veloso Bar," its name was changed to Garota de Ipanema (read "Girl from Ipanema") in honor of the famous bosa nova song of that title by composers Jobim and Moraes though some say in honor of Heloísa Pinheiro whose charming (said by Moraes to be a "mixture of flower and mermaid") Carioca stylized samba like way of strolling that is said to have inspired it. Overall, Garota de Ipanema remains a lively and still inspiring place and, fortunately for those of us whose command of Portuguese has failed, has some English speaking staff. The food and the prices are about as good and reasonable as you'll find in what is now this fashionable area of Rio. I drank caipirinhas while visiting Rio. A LOT of caipirinhas. So I feel qualified to say that Garota de Ipanema makes some of the BEST caipirinhas in the city. Potent and not too sweet; just the way I like it! My friends and I came here mid-day. We weren't actually hungry, but just had to drop by this famous eatery when nearby. We did not regret it! Other than our drinks, we just had some small snacks. Everything was very good, if just a bit too salty for my American palate, but that seems characteristic of Brazilian cuisine. The service was top-notch. The servers don't speak much English, but are very willing to work with gringos as best they can. And they're so friendly! There's a little bit of everything at Garota de Ipanema. It's located in a fun and well-populated part of Ipanema, open late and equipped with walls of windows that allow you to look at all the tourists, locals and pretty folks passing by. Yes, it's touristy (it's close to the beach) but I didn't feel like I was getting a touristy hustle. The surprisingly cheap Brahma Chopp beer went down smooth and easy and I knew - from my time in Chicago - that Brazilians are known for their pizza skills, so it's pizza I would have. And what's more Brazilian than a Portuguesa pizza? If you don't know what that is, allow me to whet your whistle: tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, tomato, hard-boiled egg, onion, ham, chouriço sausage, green bell peppers, olives, and oregano. That's quite a selection, eh? I figured that even if I was at a touristy place, I would still eat like a local. Verdict: locals eat really well. The Portuguesa is a pizza I'd like to incorporate into my regular rotation. First off, egg on top of near anything is delicious. Egg on pizza is something I regret not having had before. And, if egg doesn't do it for you, surely one of the million+ ingredients atop this pie will do it for you. Typically, I am not an olive kind of guy. This pizza made me rethink that. Every ingredient was necessary and each ingredient made me want to eat more of the pizza. With the beer being so cheap, I had a few mugs to accompany my meal. Despite eating pizza, this is a white tablecloth/waiter-in-black kind of joint. My waiter was a nice guy. He didn't speak much English but he did speak Spanish, so we communicated that way. We were attracted to the meaty smells emanating from this open air restaurant by the beach when we walked by on a Sunday afternoon. Everything about it screams tourist trap but we were pleasantly surprised with the quality (and quantity) of the food. I ordered the steak and fettuccine (of which my dining companions took seconds and thirds -- there was plenty to go around). The other orders at my table included steak and fries and grilled salmon. After all of it arrived we realized we three could have easily done with at least one fewer dish. Keep this in mind when ordering: these entrees are huge! When in Rio, I always stay in Ipanema. And when in Ipanema, I always stop by at least once at Garota de Ipanema. Most of the food I've had is really good, including the sandwiches (yep, that's real filet mignon in that one). They serve a nice cold choppe and the caipirinhas are some of the better ones around. But where Garota de Ipanema really shines is with the picanha -- sirloin that's been BBQ'd on the outside and served atop a sizzling tray for you to finish cooking up slices of it. BTW, one picanha order serves 2-3 people, so the US$40 price tag is totally worth it, including that it comes with fries, farofa, salsa, and rice. After sizzling up a couple slices of the picanha, top them off with farofa & salsa, and maybe a couple drops of the malegueta pepper sauce (it's in the tin with the tiny spoon, and since it's oil soaking in what are basically tabasco peppers, excercise caution). Delicious. While the window seats are nice for view and ventilation, know that you will be solicited by beggars, people doing impropmtu samba sessions, fire jugglers, and guys doing caipoera in the middle of the street (OK, maybe those guys deserve a couple reais when they do backflips in traffic). Great place to stop by after a day at the beach (in the event you haven't already loaded up with BBQ at Barraca do Uruguai... subject of another review). Beach attire perfectly OK. Beware that during the time around Carnaval, Garota constructs a special "Cardapio do Carnaval." My experience with the service wasn't all that great. When I asked for a chocolate mousse I was surprised to get a prepackaged dessert from some other vendor. When I got my menu that looked like it had been used several thousand times (should be read as worn out) I could tell it was outdated or not kept up. My persuasion is that the restaurant has been a staple only because of name recognition and not because it's really a great place to have dinner. I would say try other places nearby first. Sent it back and ordered the lasagna which was watery and simply disgusting. The pizza was adequate and the pasta was just ok. Junior waiter boxed us into a corner with a table of 20. We could not get out without rubbing our ass or private parts past someone's table. Truly sickening disgusting and embarrassing for ALL of us. Also junior waiter never asked us is we wanted breadsticks of anything. He also poorly gave a very bad recommendation of food. Only saving grace here might be the Brasilian picanha. Skip this place. Amazing dinner experience in Rio! First, the restaurant is visited by tourist but its far from a tourist trap. We arrived and were seated immediately, we ordered the fried empanadas as an appetizer (amazing!) the beef and cheese were my favorite but the scrimp was unique and tasty as well. We ordered the famous Brazilian picahna and let me tell you, it's amazing! Served table side in a sizzling cast iron skillet, the salty and tender beef along with the tender fat is a life changing experience. The dish comes with French fries, rice and Brazilian love fajuda (not a fan). We finished with the traditional flan which was tasty but nothing amazing. Overall this is probably the best dinner at Rio so far. read more
