I attended a special event here and was really blown away by the experience. So much so I signed up for a membership the next day. The space is pretty basic but comes with lockers, clean bathrooms and a shower. The "gym" itself is broken up by punching bags, weight benches and polymeric equipment along the wall. You go through 8 rounds alternating between the sections. They have all sorts of cool lights and projections around the room and the music is BUMPIN! So you almost forget you're totally busting your ass! The instructors/coaches are great! Really motivating and always willing to help/demonstrate the exercises if you forget or are confused. Kelly and Sav were super awesome and I'm excited to take more of their classes. This is a tough workout for 45min but you feel like you've really worked for it! So I recommend giving it a shot if you're looking for a new way to spice up your workout routines! read more

I was a frequent visitor of the west ashley location which was a different format. I loved the music. I also enjoyed the switch back and forth from boxing to weights. The staff was nice and the new format keeps you on your toes. The gym was well lite and clean. I give 4 stars, because I was pretty much confused the entire class. I can see that other newcomers where too. The instructor really didn't capitalize on helping us or checking in. Combos were to fast and it was hard to follow. The new ppl were put in the back and you couldn't see the combos well. Overall, I love grit box and their format. read more

Really bad experience with some of the meatheads in there picking fights. There's a dog in there and every time you get on ground to do push-ups or any kind of work out sit ups etc., you get dog hair all in your hands all over your clothes. Nobody is ever here except for when classes are held. So there's no support, no atmosphere, no community. So many other gyms to choose from, I would be very cautious of this one. read more

So I've been going to gyms pretty regularly since high school. I've tried out memberships, worked with a personal trainer, used Classpass to discover different studios around Charleston.... & even though I felt better at the end of my workouts, I almost always dreaded going to the gym and stayed to myself even during group workouts. I never felt connected to the EXPERIENCE of working out, and I definitely never felt connected to the strangers I worked out around or the coaches who taught my classes. Yet, I value my health and feel my best when I work out regularly, so I just accepted my workout experiences as being normal. Then I got hired at GRIT BOX. It's a gym I had never heard of but was immediately impressed by. I tried out my first free class there, before being hired as an employeee, and I had never felt more included. I actually remembered the instructors name this time, and became friends with the girl working out next to me (aka dying with me) . I left feeling on top of the world and genuinely excited to go back to workout! Like whaaaaaat Since being hired, I've realized that my awesome first experience at GRIT BOX was just the norm for everyone who came there. The employees are friends with the memebers to the point of sometimes feeling like family. The classes aren't sterile or impersonal, they're motivating (yes, difficult), but FUN. And now I've started working out with a personal trainer again and I'm already stronger than I've been in years. It helps that my trainer's name is Fig Newton and he's hilarious but also so so knowledgeable. I just never knew such a place existed and I doubt you did either. So no, I'm not saying all of this about GRIT BOX bc I work there. I felt connected to this place from the start - I could feel the difference. Ok, so it's been almost 2 years now so I think an update is due. I LOVE this gym!!! I have never been in better shape in my entire life. So yeah, maybe I broke my wrist last year.....sh*t happens!! Still was able to be out for 4 months and somehow maintain. Getting back to the gym was literally my only priority (that's when I knew I was hooked). Some days talking myself into getting to class can be so so hard. Once I make it through the doors though, it's always SO SO worth it! I've never been one to stick with the gym or any sort of workout program but I can say as long as I am in Charleston, I will be at Gritbox! #gritgang read more

I signed up for the 2 week Groupon (note: not really 2 weeks unlimited - it's actually up to 4 classes). Great workouts that vary each time and the owner Cody is a great instructor. This review is for their old studio - Cody mentioned their new studio would be much nicer but I opted out of signing up for a regular membership with them. The price was a bit steep for me, and the $50 enrollment fee I was told about after I finally decided to join and give them my credit card number ultimately was my deal breaker. It is a great gym though, hence the 4 stars. They are open 24 hours and have wonderful instructors. It's worth checking out. First class is free! read more

This place is AMAZING. Since the day I met the owner he has been a true fitness inspiration. He is one of the most caring, down to earth Fitness Trainers I know. Super knowledgeable, super helpful and truly cares about the health and wellness of his clients. This gym opened up about 2-3 weeks ago and I'm addicted to his Kickboxing classes. It's my new found love. I get such a great total body workout in and I feel strong and powerful. When I walk out of his class I feel like I can conquer the world! I can not wait for his boot camp classes to start!!! I recently became a fitness competitor and he has been a huge help, friend and supporter throughout the entire process and journey and I am so excited to continue with it and have him in my corner. I was on the hunt for a kickboxing studio in Charleston for when I'm not at my home gym in ATL and Grit Box seemed to have the feel and aesthetic I was looking for. They were very friendly and accommodating when getting me in for my first free class and even confirmed it twice! I arrived pretty early for my 5:30 class and the front desk gals who greeted me were super nice and welcoming. I explained that I had a kickboxing gym, where I had been going 2-4x/week for the last year. They gave me a tour of the place, showed me where to put my stuff, had me sign a waiver, all the usual stuff. Then they assigned me a bag in the front (which I haaaaaate) but I get that new people are usually given a spot where the instructor can see them, so I understood. Now, here's where it gets hairy. The instructor, who was also very friendly and introduced himself, explained to me and a few other newbies that we would be doing a modified version of the class. When I explained that I had taken classes before, he asked me to demonstrate kicks, knees, and elbows in front of the class in slow motion. During which, he corrected and picked apart my technique. Duuuuuuude. That is not only insulting, but downright embarrassing. I get that you don't want people to injure themselves, but this is NOT the way to ensure that. It felt like a pretty meathead move and started the class with a bad taste in my mouth. I passed the test and class began shortly after. The workout itself was great--I left feeling like I had gotten my ass thoroughly kicked. And once everyone got moving, the instructor was less micromanage-y. The space for the kickboxing bags is kinda small, so you have a specific area that you're assigned to. I'm used to a little more free form and movement, but that's just a personal preference. I still had plenty of elbow room to do my thing. Overall I had a decent time at Grit Box. It seems like they are working through some growing pains as a relatively new gym, but the workouts are definitely worth checking out. read more

The instructor made sure you understand the punches and kicks (knees for newbies) before the class starts. We joined Grit Box about a week ago and could not be happier with our decision to do so. To start, Cody and the rest of the instructors have been so welcoming which is a huge positive because a lot of gyms and gym staff have the tendency to be kind of cold. The atmosphere, between the instructors, the other members, the incentives, unparalleled. Next, the classes. Oh the classes. They are the BEST worst thing you will do. I cannot begin to explain my love for GritBox Fitness! I first visited twice about a year ago while visiting Charleston, so when I moved here I knew exactly what gym I wanted to join! The staff welcomes you with a huge grin and treats you like family--it is very obvious that they genuinely love being there. I take both kickboxing and bootcamp classes regularly and love that every class is FUN but different and presents new challenges! This is not your typical gym with cocky, meathead trainers--they are down to earth and so much fun even outside of the gym! Members become part of the "GritFit Fam" and they host monthly outings for everyone to just hang out! I LOVE this gym and will remain a member here for a very long time! read more
