I travel a lot for work and don't want to have to be locked in. The instruction was technical on the basics, which was honestly what I needed as it has been a long time since I have trained. The gym is located in a sub-level floor in the back of a building. I drove back and forth a couple of times trying to find it. The school was pretty clean and they had water there which was nice. From the looks of the school they want you to buy their uniform but two things: this is a personal assumption and not an abnormal practice for a martial arts school. Every one was pretty friendly and had a non competitive atmosphere that made training relaxing. I would recommend this gym to anyone traveling through or living in Helena. Run by a true Japanese martial arts Master, sensei Kenji Nakagawa is the REAL DEAL! Taught by his own Japanese master when he was in Japan, he brought this amazing Enshindo Martial Arts here to Montana, and has been teaching many generations of children and adults alike! I'm not even kidding, he has been teaching here in Helena for upwards of around 38 years or so I think, and has been such an incredible asset to the community for so long. I mean my neighbors kids are all grown up and moved away but they had all gotten their black belts when they were young! I just feel so fortunate to have found this place while he is still teaching. I was able to take the beginner classes with my 8 year old daughter, and instead of $139 per month for each of us for 30 minute classes, it's $60 per month each, for ONE HOUR CLASSES!! There is simply no comparison. Unfortunately I hurt my achilles tendon and had to stop the classes but my daughter continues and I hope to go back when I'm able. Mr. Nakagawa makes the classes really fun for kids with lots of games that help with coordination and teamwork, in addition to the actual martial arts moves. Also he incorporates doing the right thing in life, and helps with kids that have behavior issues. Sure, it's not in a new fancy building, but it's WAY better than ANY of the competition. I cannot recommend Nakagawa Martial Arts academy any higher that I am. Mr. Nakagawa is truly a gem in this community and every community needs amazing people like this. We had already paid for another whole month but they were kind and refunded the month we couldn't attend. You are in good hands with the great people at Helena ATA Martial arts. The staff is very friendly and geared towards teaching kids not just martial arts but also discipline and self control, and not just at the studio, at home, and they give you papers to record your kids behavior and repeat back to the teachers. I thought it was very thorough and good for all involved.
