What the heck? So I go on my normal Friday morning food run. The lady tells me she can't "have my bags up here"when I try to give them to her. "Well where do you want them?" Leave them in the car she says. Ok. So she says we are supposed to bag our own stuff if we bring our bags! No notice or anything on the doors. But that she's "being nice". Wow. So I ask her if the choices are to bring our own bags and bag stuff ourselves or pay for bags and they do it. Yep. What a crock of crap. read more

I work in the grocery business, and have been in 100+ different grocery stores in the past 10 years. I have never heard louder radios (walkie-talkies) than in this Grocery Outlet. It is obnoxious, and makes me want to leave the store. I suggest that the management or ownership walk the store with the eyes/ears of a customer and determine if the staff radios are potentially annoying people. Customers might not complain, but instead just avoid the noise and shop elsewhere. You won't really know how many potential loyal customers never return... read more

Grass Valley Store has wonderful selection after their remodel/ expansion, and the new owner Steve really invested for the future. Produce offerings are expanded, as is the organic selection. Unfortunately, very inexpensive prices on some of my staple items, such as fresh off-brand tortillas are history with the changes. I think the pricing is not within the control of the local store owner. A lot of products here are a crapshoot... Many products are close-dated and some are past the "best by date" or near the "use by" (expiration) date. IMO, those dated products should go to a food bank, and not be pawned off at retail store. In addition to the obvious (cheese & salami end-cuts and such), there are some products that are clearly factory seconds, but unfortunately, you don't discover that until the package is opened and food is tasted. In the past, the factory seconds (and the past-dated products) were clearly marked - now it is Caveat Emptor, Just remember, THERE IS A REASON that most stuff is here. Buyer beware, and choose carefully. I've been shopping at Grass Valley GO for about 20 years. Staff is usually helpful and friendly. There are occasional real "bargains", and the wine selection is great and reasonably priced. There are some unusual items to try out as an adventure, and the pricing on most everything is below retail - about on par with Winco's prices. My low rating reflects new return policies and disrespectful customer treatment by some new staff. A receipt is now mandatory for ALL returns. The policy had been... "if it's bad, just bring it back". For me, that amounted to maybe $100 in returns during 20 years of shopping here. Case-in-point, a tube of toothpaste bought in July 2016 for about the same price as Walmart "everyday" price - with no expiration date printed on the outside of the package, .. Opened up at home, and the expiration on the tube was March 2014 - 2 years prior to purchase. Had already tossed the receipt so no return was possible, and Into the trash it went. Recently I bought some lunchmeat which looked fine and was not close to expiration date. Went to make sandwiches the next day, and the product obviously had a period of no refrigeration - it smelled gross, and the cats would not eat it (my litmus test). When I returned what was left of this item the NEXT DAY, together WITH the receipt that is now required, the gal told me that "perishable items" must be returned the same day per policy on the receipt (no such policy is there). I don't check lunch meat until I make sandwiches.... Do You ??? Since I live way out of town same-day returns on food I buy in the evening for lunch tomorrow is not in the cards. Prime reason for this return was so that they would check the product and pull their stock, The gal was disinterested in that. After several minutes of extremely unpleasant treatment, with other customers waiting in line, the return was "accepted as a one-time courtesy". WTF... Disrespect your customer for a $2 package of spoiled meat? I have never received treatment like this at a retail store. People make the difference, and that element has gone downhill at Grass Valley GO. Sorry, despite a great new store, I'll be shopping elsewhere in the future, and I sense I'll not be alone in that decision. read more

They have good stuff there you just have to check the expiration dates. Because there is spoiled food in there so now I check my food before I check out my food. The parking is horrible in there so I don't shop in there all the time because it is really bad. I would have to go early in the day to go shopping and miss the mobs of people who are already there. The employees their are very nice and very friendly too. They are also very helpful too. The reason why I gave a one star rating is because of the parking and sometimes there are very very rude customers. And sometimes I will get food that is out dated or spoiled. So now I just check the dates on the foods now. read more

Ummm, I don't know about you, but I love finding the EXACT SAME brand and item that other people pay 20$ for--- for 10$. I know, .....we've all heard the nicknames like "the Gross Out" and the GO.... and sometimes this place has some pretty ugggly hair ties and canned oysters and old noodle ramen packages, but please. Besides, the wine and beer selection can hold wonderful surprises somedays, and other days - well, not so much ; ) Today was a good day. Oh how do I love the Gross Out! I call it this with much affection! I don't know what I'd do without this wonderful store. It is so exciting to walk in the front door. I still get shivers after 15 years. You just don't know what you'll find! And if you find something you like, buy a lot of it because you may never see it again there. I bought some coconut bars that retail at the health food store for a buck a piece for 1/4 of that! I bought 4 cases. I went back the next day, they were out. DAMN!!!!! Strike while the iron is hot! I love the check out goddesses. Cathy, Trish and all of the rest of the staff are always super nice. And that little dude that does the beverages. He's always singing along with whatever is playing through the speakers. I've never had the guts to do that but he inspires me. I love those new little baskets on wheels too. It's about time a cart and a basket where merged together. Grocery Outlet is cutting edge. Genius. I love to go in the morning when I have the whole store to myself. It starts to get a little crowded after 9. So look for me. I'll be the one with the goofy smile plastered across my face. And please forgive me ahead of time if my baskcart runs into you. This is the best Grocery Outlet I've ever been to in both Oregon and California. They have the best customer service, and they treat everyone like they're friends and family. They always have something each week that is a major find, I mean outside of their everyday savings. Like 99 cents for Summers Eve double douche pak! That's unbeatable, even at Wally World right down the street at the Redmond, Oregon store. Also their bathroom is above reproach- always clean and the toilet is so spic and spam you can do a line off the back of the toilet or the toilet seat if you wish! I always like shopping at the Grocery Outlets - one can get many things at highly reduced prices, and sometimes they are unusual items not readily found elsewhere. Of course, they don't have everything. They deal in over-runs and surplus items, though they try to keep a reasonable selection of produce, cheese, lunchmeats, frozen and canned foods, etc. stocked. If you like something and its a bargain, then stock up on it - it may not be there next time you come. This one is a bit better than the one in Auburn. My favorite grocery store here... even if I can't always get everything there! No surprise ... that is their motto... "shop here first"! The staff here is nice. The wine selection is good. There are lots of "finds" throughout the store as well as the staples... coffee, yogurt, cheese (yummy cheeses), bread, veggies, fruit, and much more. GROSS ME OUTlet sells expired merchandise. Alot of this stuff should be donated to food banks & homeless people. But instead, the manufacturers sell it to this chain of Bargain Supermarkets, who then pawns it off on unsuspecting bargain hunters who "think" they are getting a good deal. Some people should be ashamed of themselves....paying good money for stuff thats past its pull date. I guess if you consume it quickly enough it wont turn moldy in your 'fridge. They have a great selection of beer, wine, and even craft kombucha. The prices on the alcohol are very reasonable also. The dairy department offers many choices of organic and usually very pricey items at a reduced price. I enjoy browsing the health and beauty aisle and the seasonal offerings are outstanding. I shop here about once a month to get frozen dinners for work lunches and miscellaneous items. I shop here first and get what items I can from my list, then I get what I can't find at G.O. at a normal grocery store. Other good finds at G.O. include a nice selection of cheese, breakfast cereal (which can be pretty expensive at regular stores), toiletries, and bread. I've also had some good random finds, such as a pair of capri sweat pants for about $5 which I wear all the time. In many years of shopping here, I've only encountered one spoiled/expired/inedible food item: a bottle of wine that had turned to vinegar. They cheerfully gave me a refund. In fact, their TV ads say they have a money-back guarantee. I suppose it would be a good idea to check expiration dates on perishable foods to be safe, but I've never had a problem other than that wine, and I buy perishables there all the time. read more

I am a sucker for this place. It is an adventure every time, in a good way. You never know exactly what they will have in stock, and you can find some crazy good deals. Crystal milk and Truckee Baking Co. bread are always good deals, the milk often a buck or more cheaper than at other places. The bread is fresh and a bit cheaper than other local places. Fresh veggies and fruit can be hit or miss. One thing they seem to have regularly are good avocados at a good price. Packaged food is where the real adventure is. I love finding Clif bars and Luna bars at 40% cheaper than even Trader Joe's. When they have them, Amy's pizzas are always $2 or $3 cheaper than other groceries. Sometimes you find new, interesting stuff, too. You never know exactly what they will have, and that is part of the fun. Beer and wine can be good deals. I generally avoid the real low end wines and buy more of their mid-priced stuff which often is very good (and still only $8-$12). Beer is generally good, although I have had a miss or two on some that were probably stored improperly somewhere along the supply chain and whose flavor was off. If you like them, Sierra Nevada and Corona always seem to have good prices. A couple wishes: more and better breakfast cereal, often it is just the stuff that is pure sugar. Also more varieties of good ice cream. They have lots of the cheap stuff, but only a few flavors of the better stuff, though I imagine it is hard to find deals on it; I don't buy it often, so this has not been a big deal for me. I LOVE Grocery Outlet. The owners always donate items/gift certificates to Nevada County Habitat for Humanity and I am sure other non-profits. They also employ people with disabilities which is legit. Everything is always on super sale and its always fun to people watch. :) Don't go at the first of the month when people get their welfare/ebt. read more

Grocery Outlet is a great way to get a lot of your groceries at a cheaper price. BUT you need to be careful of what you buy. Look at the dates, and be warry of the produce. I have bought lots of bad Avacado's and I will not buy them here. But they do have low prices on lots of things. So I go here first then head over to Save-Mart. read more

I'm a 40 year old who has been leaving my ID in my car for several years, because I'm clearly not under 21. I've never had a problem with this, except for at Rite Aid, where they have a ridiculously strict policy of asking EVERYONE for their ID. Tonight I went into Grocery Outlet and was refused being sold beer because my ID wasn't on me. I understand that it's important to ID people who look like they aren't obviously over 21, however their new policy of asking everyone who looks up to 40 for their ID, and then refusing service if they don't have it is just silly. If I had less to do this evening, I would have just gone elsewhere to purchase the beer, and since their prices aren't that much better, and their lines are always long, I likely won't go their again in the future. Being a checker at a store has unfortunately become a pretty brainless job, and it's too bad that individuals can't use a little common sense when asking for an ID. read more

I'm very disappointed with the new management, they appear to me, to have brought a superficial, big city, one size fits all, approach to running the store, and they don't seem to understand that the way you treat your customers in a smaller, close knit community like Nev. Co. is different. Their return policy may just stem from a lack of experience or management wisdom on their part; rather than being an example of the way you treat people in a smaller community; but in the old store; on those rare occasions when I returned an item, the clerk might ask what was wrong with the item, but that didn't seem to matter at all, and if I had a receipt, that was helpful,but again wasn't a big deal, the clerk would simply give you a credit or exchange it for another one, understanding that when you make returns an issue with the customer who are loyal and spending thousands of dollars a year at your store; it comes across as petty. Now you must have a receipt, and you may be treated with a certain amount of suspicion (that happened to me). I can't get into particulars, of a different, recent problem that I had with attempting to make a payment with a check. But suffice to say it was B.S. and would not have happened when the Cubitt's ran the store. read more
