We did this hike in the winter, and man, was it cool. It was a really different experience! Basically you walk up to this creek bed and walk along it to some waterfalls at the end of it. You can keep following the creek bed further than that - we did, for a ways further, and it was nice - but the waterfalls and the path up to them is really the highlight here.
We rented some cleats from a store in Canmore (called Gear Up) in order to do this - and though we saw people here doing it without cleats of any kind, I would really, *really* recommend wearing some! It makes the hike much easier and more fun. There was some ice on the trails, and a couple short, steep areas, so it would have been really slippery getting along most of it without them. But most importantly, a large portion of this hike actually involves walking *on* the frozen stream, so you can see how cleats are a useful thing :P With cleats, I would say this is a fairly easy hike :)
so yeah, the first part of the trail goes through some woods and up to the dry part of the stream bed. At one point, you start getting some water in there, and you can climb down and walk on the frozen water. I'm not sure how this hike works in the summer, as there doesn't seem to be anywhere to really walk alongside the stream, only on top of it! The ice is quite thick, and judging by some holes in it that we saw, there are several layers of it - and in some places there's just dry rock under the ice. I'm a very cautious person, but after seeing that, I felt much safer walking on the ice, haha.
At the end of the stream there are a few waterfalls. There were several people there who were climbing up the sheer rock face and on the frozen waterfalls themselves, which was really cool to see :) And I'm sure it'd be great to do, if you've got all the gear for climbing!
Lastly, there were some pictographs along a small part of the river, on a sheer rock face. They're in some kind of red ochre, and partially worn away, but you could still see some of it. It was really neat to see them :) read more
