Went to Growing Farms today looking for a Mermaid Tail succulent which is hard to find. The lady working there said she thought they were sold out but looked with me in all areas. Exceptional customer service. Since they didn't have any, suggested Ace up in Nipomo. She was very helpful. Each time I have visited have had excellent service. Prices are very fair. read more

Growing Grounds is a mid-sized farm offering a modest variety of homegrown veggies, fresh eggs (laid by the hens out front), edible herbs and plants, as well as some flowers. The farm is staffed by workers with mental illness which are getting vocational training as well as a supportive work environment. I wish they would offer a bit more variety of succulents and decorative indoor plants but I hear there will be some more of that come August. Definitely a great place to purchase starters for your garden. TIP: Bring cash or check - no credit card machines here, just an honor-system drop-box. read more

Great little area where you can get local grown food. It has a great environment where it really does feel like your on a quaint little farm in the middle of no where. You can get fresh eggs and purchase plants so you can grow your own fruit and vegetables at your house. My only problem with the place is I wish it was open more often read more

This is a great place to come to look for plants. We come here especially because we can buy vegetable plants that have already been started, and those seem to be very hard to find at other places. I also like to buy succulents here. We also want to support the mission of Growing Grounds as a program of Transitions Mental Health Association. read more

OMG my Mami and I love this place, she was thoroughly impressed and finally has an image of the type of farmer I'd like to be someday. If no other reason compels you to stop by, this is a place of beauty (and I'm gonna say it, hope) for it is located next to the barbed-wire juvenile court and juvenile detention center- talk about juxtaposition. Growing Grounds Farm is more than just a roadside produce stand, it is a place of vision and one that deserves local support. They integrate the ideas of youth outreach and support, polyculture organic small scale farming, local government working relationships, among others. I can go on...but first I'll talk what they have and then ill shortly describe Growing Grounds. I got most of my kale salad needs here, the produce are freshly picked, varied, and priced to sell . Boquet of flowers you can not find at the supermarket or even at the florists dance around their small indoor stand. There are carrots and onions, eggs and potatoes, salad greens , lemons, and herbs of all sorts. What did we get? we got plenty- blueberries, curly kale, dino chard, oh some potted plants of serrano peppers and watermelon. The blueberries are $4 (fair price, i think), greens and potted edibles around $1-$2. They offer loads of edibles starts to plant in your garden- melons, cucumbers, strawberries, lettuce, currants, kale, etc. They carry ornamentals like succulents and flowers, they also have compost and potting mix. Payment is on the honor system, just know that kids with mental illness work here as part of their horticulture therapy. If you've not gardened before, gardening is conducive to meditative being. They accept both checks and cash. The property has some fruit trees, a pretty native and pollinator friendly garden, green houses, varied colorful row-by-row edibles with flowers, AND the best part: CHICKENS!!! This place helps mentally ill people tremendously. It allows then to work in a quiet non threatening environment. It allows them to be productive, as many of them are not capable of working in an 8-5 job situation. The food is organic, and many times I have gone they have a really nice selection of flowers for a good price. read more

Just moved to SM and was looking for farms around here. They have organic veggies, plants, and eggs from the hens nearby. I did not see anyone around so I just paid and left since this is based on an honor system. Very nice way to get your greens! read more

The environment is wonderful. It feels good just to go out there and walk around. The vegetables are sweet and fresh, so much better than from the grocery store. It's one of those hidden treasures you never expect to find in Santa Maria. I have been to their fall harvest festival. It made me feel like I was at a renaissance fair with the music, vendors and just for kicks the do Santa Maria BBQ. I understand they won't have it this year, but a plant sale. I've been to their plant sales and you can't beat the variety. It's worth anyone to check it out on a Thursday afternoon. A great place to take the kids and have them enjoy the farm environment. read more
