I am talking about shelf space, towel hangers, a soap container for the shower, and other trivia. I was shocked that there was no telephone in the room, but then realized that was a good thing. It gave me an excuse to skip an international conference call. Since this is a guest house, not a hotel, the house rules are a wee bit restrictive, but manageable. Breakfast buffet excellent. Friendly, but minimal staff. The boss is a little bossy.

I went to pick them up and the young lady at the desk wasn't at the desk. She was tucked to the side playing on the computer or something and taking her time to attend to the guests and customers. When asked for help she acted as if forced to get out of bed to let the cat out or something. Sure, it may be a very good hotel but customer service is lacking, meaning that the first person you meet who works there gives you a bad taste in your mouth about the whole place.

We asked where some restaurants were and got a list of good ones. But as we walked outside and saw this cute little terrace with chairs facing the canal (with blankets) and had such a great vibe, we thought there's no better place to be then literally right here! We enjoyed a couple lattes it got the tapas plate. How perfect! So here we sit, enjoying the sun, the walkers-by, the boats on the canal and the amazing views.

We did take a taxi, but found out the entrance for guests is around the back on the cobblestone. You will need to go up to an elevator to find the lobby. The inside of the hotel is very cool, and very themed towards the old post office vibe that it used to be. The staff at the front desk is very nice and accommodating, and they will walk you to your room and show you everything. We had a room that was a king bed loft style, with the bathroom on the second level. They had cocktails little treats and stuff in the mini bar in the room. The bed was very comfortable. The windows opened up and looked out right into the city center. Wow it was beautiful and the perfect location!!! There are plenty of things within walking distance to the hotel, including the Castle, bars and restaurants, the river bus stop tram stop, etc. The hotel has an on-site bar and restaurant. We had a few cocktails from the bar. It was super cozy and a really good time! It appeared a lot of people from the city were there so it was a highly sought after bar to go to. Overall I really recommend staying at the post even if it's a little bit more expensive it's totally worth it!!

Solid hotel with great food…read more Check-in: Can be a little slow. If there is a line, performance and efficiency are not top priorities. Get ready for a wait. But the staff is friendly at the front desk if somewhat limited. Limited you say? Let me give you an example. I needed to shorten my stay by a day. I let the front desk know, in person, of my change. The response: "We can't". When pressed, she said it was because I'd need to change it in the reservation system I used to book. Seeing as I didn't pre-pay, this didn't make sense. Additionally as I was 9 days into my 14 day stay, the site I used to book couldn't do anything. When pressed she "talked" to her manager and 2 seconds later I was all set. Keep in mind, I was making a change 4 days early, not the day before or day of my needed departure. Rooms: This is the tale of two rooms! If you get a room from the original hotel, well, it's not up to standard (think Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton). Its more at the motel level. And, IMPORTANT, the older rooms are not air conditioned. There are often twin sized beds in here. If you get a room in the "newer" side (comfort rooms I think they are referred to), then you're all set. Mini-bar, A/C, king beds, good bathrooms. Its well worth a few extra dollars. Gym: Treadmill, old elliptical machine and a odd bowflex like weight area. Hard to find in the basement. Restaurant/Food: This makes the Van Der Valk shine. Some of the best "hotel" food I've had. In fact they seem to be a dinning destination for the surrounding area. Great menu selection, high quality, full bar. Highly recommend. Parking: Gated, but free, parking. Remember when leaving in the AM to get a gate-pass at the front desk. Lot can fill up on occasion. There is overflow parking out the back gate to the left past Accenture. American tip: Service is "slow". It can take a while to get a drink or a re-fill. Think ahead. They are in NO rush at all and are not super attentive. Remember: you don't tip here, so you're stuck with the speed of service you get.

My one problem with this place was how wildly overpriced the food was. For my appetizer, I received 3 lobster raviolis and it cost 16 Euros. The steak and onion kabob, while delicious, was almost 30 Euros. Including my meal and my girlfriend's, plus we both had a glass of wine, it came out to 98 Euros for lunch. That is the only bad part about it. If you don't mind forking over some money, this is a very nice place to eat.

The 3 of us decided on the menu, which was 29 Euros, a not-too-bad price for three courses. We all started off with some prawns. There were 4-5 in the bowl/plate (looked like a bowl!) with a delicious sauce. The prawns were nothing special but OK. The main course was a steak, actually the menu said it was an Irish steak, and it was a nice big chunk of meat. I enjoyed mine with pepper sauce but my wife felt that hers was too "chewy". At least here, when you ask for medium or rare, it is cooked that way, which is not the norm around the country. They don't seem to have the same ideas of rare, medium and well-done as an American restaurant would. For dessert, she had chocolate mousse and this lady is a lover of mousse. To her, this one was so-so, nothing special and perhaps a bit heavier than a mousse should be. I had the poire William, a whole pear baked or something, with some chocolate around it and also, I'm guessing some alcohol. There was also a side of ice cream on the plate. I enjoyed this but it was so filling. Overall, a nice experience. If you don't want to spend a fortune too, go for the set menu.
