Why 4 stars? Because it was centrally located and certainly unique! --- --- --- This was the final hotel on our 13 days expedition throughout Europe. With our trip coming to an end, we had mixed emotions - it was something we looked forward to for months while planning it, but damn... we were to tired. We walked over 100 miles during our time in various cities, so we were both very excited to get back to a normal life... and Hotel Metropole was our last stop before making that journey. The main lobby area looked much more like a super old school bank, than a hotel. Outside the hotel, there was a ton of construction going on, as they were completely re-doing a very wide road (think small highway-sized.) The person who checked us in provided us with ear buds in case the construction noise disturbed us, but we didn't hear anything from our rooms. Plus, we loved the very centralized location of this hotel - everything was within one mile, which allowed us to walk to everything we had on our itinerary. Our bellhop quickly became my all-time favorite person in his chosen profession. He had our bags and basically went into an all-out sprint to make sure to catch the elevator, but somehow he did this super gracefully. I was wildly impressed. He couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating, as we had a few questions about the area and the room. The room had very high ceilings and a huge bathroom. It wasn't super updated or out-of-date - kind of caught in the middle. The AC was not turned on for our stay on May 9th, which meant that we had to open the window. Not ideal, but this was the norm throughout Europe at this time of year. Breakfast was offered for 9.50 Euros (Express) or 21 Euros (Full) but we didn't have time. We were only here for one night and had a flight to catch in the morning. My biggest complaint was the situation with the shower. When you turned the water on, it came out of both the shower head and the water faucet and there was no way to turn off one or the other. They were either both on or both off. That would have been fine, but the temperature in the water was wildly different. My shower water was warm, but the bath water was scalding. I would have loved the shower water to be hotter, but my feet couldn't handle the bath water to be turned up any more. It had to have been about a 20 degree difference. Stayed here for 3 nights over the Easter weekend. The hotel is very grand, beautiful reception areas. The room however was a bit of a letdown. The wall paper and carpet were a very bizarre colour and the combination just didn't work. Anyway, we were there to spend time visiting the lovely city so it wasn't really a big deal. Bed was comfortable but pillows were more cushions than pillows and I normally like a good pillow to sleep on. Really loved that there was a mini bar with 6 complimentary drinks. 2 beers, 2 cokes and 2 waters. Very nice touch. And we were able to get more drinks and keep them cold in the fridge which was helpful as it was quite warm out. Only downside was there was a dirty sock in one of the drawers. Discovered it morning after we arrived so didn't really make an issue of it but it got us a bit weirded out and wondering a bit. All in all, we would stay stay here again. Wonderfully located. Walked 5 minutes to Grand Place so within all amenities. read more

We stayed here in September. It was a pleasant stay. The hotel is very grand, with marble floors, huge vaulted ceilings and plush furniture in the public areas. The rooms were very nice, clean and the beds comfy. The free mini bar (2 of each, water, coke and beer) is a nice touch. We had six rooms in total. Five of the six were superb with balconies and nice views of the city. One wasn't so good as it was right by the extraction vent from the kitchen and had no balcony. It was hot and you couldn't open the window because of the noise and smell from the vent. Overall pretty good though. We had the breakfast buffet as part of the package and it was excellent. There was lots of choice. If only the mushrooms weren't from tins! I would advise against eating at the hotel's Cafe Metropole. It was expensive, slow service and the food wasn't very nice. read more

Though the rooms here are a bit dated (at least my room was very dated, but then again, I got a corporate rate and the smallest room, so no biggie)...it was spacious and clean. The bathroom was also really large and nicely appointed. However, one thing I've never seen before (except in all-inclusives) is a free mini bar (2 beers, 2 waters, 2 cokes). Very cool! The free internet was severely lacking in service...I had to log on to the conference center system when the one in the room didn't work and it was terrible! However, if you can get internet, it's nice that it's free...maybe some rooms work better? The building itself is lovely and the ceilings and walls in the main spaces are beautiful. There is piano music in the bar at night and it's an all around beautiful building. Breakfast was included in my rate, and it was ok, but nothing wonderful. The room was nice and had it not been snowing, the view was decent from the breakfast room. Staff was nice and the concierge was especially accommodating as I insisted upon being given a map to my favorite chocolate and cookie shops! So, rooms are dated, but otherwise, great hotel! read more

I stayed here on a trip to Belgium in November 2014.The hotel is a beautiful piece of history ,conveniently situated in central Brussels ,with many restaurants and stores close by.It was built in the 1800's The beautiful architecture ,and paintings on the walls are evident of this Renaissance period The lift ,however ,is very difficult to operate and you will struggle to get your luggage in if you dont have help.The breakfast was just a standard buffet ,nothing out of this world ,especially since the hotel is quite expensive (I paid 120 euro for 1 night ) The staff were really professional and always ready to help The hotel is a beautiful slice of history ,and aside from the lift and the price,it is a lovely place to stay read more

Summary: Old world charm, think Gatsby, in a great way. Hotel staff is extremely professional and aims to please. The Suite is big enough for many to share.Amazing location, a lot of great events. Location: This is about 10min walk from Central station or you can take the Metro to De brouckere (1 or 5 line). Brussels is small. I was there for the Marathon, which ended in 2014 immediately in front of this hotel, making this the most luxurious of hotel options to quickly hobble back to, post race. It also hosted La Nuit Blanche which is a bit of a Gatsby celebration; I meant that literally in my summary. Design: The place has old world charm but not in a cheesy fashion. Think the Spanish series Grand Hotel and you've got this place. The rooms have high ceilings with marble and beautiful crown molding and chandeliers. They have the old style elevators that are a real treat if you've not seen one. Super cool. Service: I could not possibly have been more confused and jet lagged coming into the hotel. For various reasons, the travel conditions had not been ideal. Brussels culture is French-Flemish, which takes a little to figure out as an American. They are a direct no-BS bunch, who show their effort via action. My on-line booking had a request for late check out. But miscommunication had me with a normal check out meaning I might not have a place to shower post race, pre-flight to next spot. They can't confirm until day of, as they are very popular. I told her I was willing to pay the $50Euro fee and she repeated the rules. I told her I might cry at the idea of running post marathon with no place to take a bath. She looked very seriously at me and said, please don't cry. Our job is to try to make my guests happy. I cannot promise, but I will make sure you are ok. It was possibly one of the more sincere professional responses I have ever had from a service person, It was really appreciated through the haze of my jet lag. Her colleagues were all equally as helpful. They were in fact able to sort me out without a hitch. I also had left my wallet downstairs and it was returned to me with everything I had in it. Any requests I had or questions were promptly responded to. despite hosting an extremely busy night of events in front of the hotel, there was always someone at the concierge desk to answer the phone. They helped me get a cab despite marathon traffic and really watched out for me as I hobbled back to my room. There's pride in their work and that's a really great thing. I'd give them 6 stars if I could. Rooms: I was very fortunate and got upgraded to the Tuscanini Suite from my original room selection. This was likely because it faced the street and was slightly noisy. I was so jet lagged, plus as a NYer I can sleep right through and ignore pretty much background noise. It was 65 Sq meters ~ 725 square feet. the size of a large NY apartment, but without a kitchen. It had a full bath with tub and an entry bathroom. All of their suites have their own names and each is decorated differently. The bath was really fantastic post marathon. There was separated shower, jacuzzi tub, separated toilet towel heater little sitting bench. The bath was elevated so not ideal if you have any knee issues or if you just ran a marathon, but after 2 aleve, I hopped right in that gorgeously large tub. The room is incredibly clean with a lot of nice touches. The minibar had only water, during my stay but you can always call downstairs if you need anything. Amenities: Sadly no spa, but there is a little fitness room. Jogging is pretty much everywhere in the city, so you can just ask and they'll point you toward one of the many nearby parks. Who is this place for: I think most Americans go to Europe and either want uber modern design or old world charm. This is perfect if you're looking for the later. If you upgrade to a suite for a romantic reason or just for more space, it's certainly worth it. read more

Overall: Luxury hotel with a great breakfast, great price and central location. The Metropole is situated right across the street from a metro station (De Brouckere), a couple blocks north of a grocery store (Anspach) and a very short walk to the Grand Place. Being central there are countless places to eat and drink within a very short distance of the hotel. The location is excellent. You cannot help but be amazed at the grandeur of the hotel when walking in to the lobby. The hotel lobby is grand, and their staff provide service that you would expect out of from a hotel with this appearance. The bell staff and front desk staff are courteous, polite and very accommodating. No problems at all with check-in. The standard rooms are very nice and extremely reasonably priced. While they are somewhat dated, they are not dirty or run down. The internet speed is excellent and the minibar is free (2 waters, 2 beers, 2 cokes). The AC worked fine and the bed was comfortable. We had no issues with noise from other rooms or outside. One of the highlights was breakfast. While not the largest breakfast buffet, there is a wide selection of hot (eggs, bacon, etc) and cold items. There is also fresh baking at breakfast. The service is excellent, the wait staff is very attentive and always at your disposal. The food is delicious; often you find the buffet food to be warm and a feeling that it was mass produced with corners cut. This is not the case with the Metropole's breakfast buffet as all the food tastes good as if it was made with care and attention by professional staff. One note however, when we were at breakfast many of the guessed were dressed upscale (suits, military uniforms, etc) so you may feel out of place if you are not appropriately dressed. read more

The two stars are for location. The service is meh. The floor of the room I'm in is lumpy... like they laid the carpet on very uneven floor. The carpet is old and faded and old. The walls are old. The Hotel Metropole claims to be a five star destination. It is not. I will say in the hotels defense it is trying hard to attain the status and it does show in some areas of the hotel. The common areas, lobby, cafe and check-in area are all beautiful and very historic much like some 5 star hotels however in many places the paint is peeling and significant wear and tear are easy to spot. The room I had (#163) was drab, dark and small. If you tried to open the closet you needed to move the table to make enough space.The mattress seemed to be about as old as the hotel itself. The TV was small and offered only limited features and programs. The lighting in the room was terrible. The bathroom was clearly updated recently and very well done but the shower had terrible pressure and the water didn't get hot the first day I was there. As I mentioned prior the common areas tried hard to be 5 star and I can attest that the breakfast buffet does the same simply by being way too darn expensive 28.00 Euro's per person and they didn't even offer omelets or made to order Belgium waffles. Nothing differentiated the buffet from the 3 star hotel I stayed at the evening prior.(breakfast there was included) All in all if you like old world European charm and small rooms with expensive breakfasts be sure to stay here. If not keep looking. I've combined the 5 star attempts with the 2 star room to get the 3 stars I gave it. read more

This is a very friendly hotel with good service. The staff is always there for you and notices when you enter the building and greets you with a happy smile. The breakfast buffett is tasty with a wide selection of foods that hopefully will suit everyone. There are two downsides however - the wifi which is capped at a extremely slow speed for the free version and then yoy have to pay a premium for the "high speed" version. 15€ for 24h. The rooms might be in some renovation needs because they really need to get rid of those unsanitary rugs on the floors. read more

Metropol is a marvelous Grand Hotel but needs serious renovation of fundamental infrastructure. Breakfast room is dark and sad. Make sure you're not too hungry if you take the 'express formula' !! Overall staff seems nice and friendly but you can tell there is no investment in their training. Price is reasonable though. read more

Centrally located near some of the greatest attractions that Brussels has to offer, this charming hotel will take you back in time. Service is good, breakfast great (just a bit pricey), rooms are clean, quiet and spacious and have all the bells and whistles one needs to have for a comfortable stay. This hotel could use a bit of refreshing though. Although it gets its charm from being old, there is a thin line between old and worn and when you look closely, some parts of it could really use an overhaul! And don't expect to be able park in the streets near it. The closest parking garage is a block away and costs 14.90 Euros per night. And the area at night is not the safest. So watch out for your wallet and purse. read more

Reaching Catalina Island's Hotel Metropole at the end of a long cross-country drive was one for the memory books! The arty beachfront balcony room, palm trees and the stunning feeling of luxury easily washed away the dust...and any former list of favorite 'hotels.' The wonderful convenience of shops & great food was just steps away from our perch, creating lazy balcony time to absolutely unwind. Also the framed artwork, pictures and the Metropoles' historical links to the island really added class to this site! Ah. So glad I stayed here. I got a really good rate which included an awesome buffet breakfast ( one of the best buffet breakfasts I've ever experienced) including Belgian waffles yummmmmmmmmmmmy. They also had a cool gym that was empty every morning so I had the whole place e to myself working off those waffles! They also had a free mini bar which they topped up every day..how cool is that?? The staff were very friendly and this place is a stone's throw away from some of the best sites in Brussels. read more

This place is awesome! The lobby, reception desk, elevator, stairs, and the waiting area is absolutely everything that I would have imagined it to be that is antique and ornamental! My stay here in this hotel made my travel experience better! I absolutely love it. Even in my own room, I had my own chandelier! However, I wouldn't go for their continental breakfast. This review has nothing to do with the hotel amenities, as we never got the chance to even enter the building. I confirmed the reservation with the hotel two weeks before we were to set out, so imagine our surprise when we were stopped at the door and informed it was impossible for us to have a reservation there that day. You'd think they could've mentioned this when I confirmed the reservation, or even given a heads up if they bumped our booking more recently. Instead, a very rude man eventually gave us a tourist map and pointed to an X he marked for another hotel and sent us off, no name or confirmation number in case the other hotel (that we did not book) had no record of a reservation. He didn't allow us access to their WiFi to check directions on our phones, and did not give us the actual address of the other hotel. When we asked about getting a taxi he just said there was a city wide taxi strike that day but hey, it was just a 15min walk! So we had to drag our suitcases through half of Brussels trying to find a hotel that may or may not exist. Certainly not the kind of service we expected while on our honeymoon after booking supposedly "luxury" hotels. Honestly this colored my entire view of Brussels, and Belgium in general. We likely won't be back for a long time because this hotel single-handedly left such a bad aftertaste. read more

Such a shame that the hotel has to suffer of the construction on the street. Beside - it's was just a pure pleasure to stay at Metropole. The staff is charming, friendly and really professional from check in to room service. Our room (standard double) was spacious, quiet (on court yard) and spotless. The hotel cultivate a certain charm and old school style we loved. We will definitely recommend to all our friends visiting Brussels and we will be happy to stay again. read more

I was very disappointed. I got a good rate, in advance, when we arrived the room assigned was very poor, no view, and it had a meeting room adjacent. When I went to ask for a different room, I was ignored by the front desk staff. We would not stay here again. Doormen and parking staff were great, we tipped them generously, we wished they worked the front desk. read more
