We've been with them for over 20 years. Yet denied a home equity loan (which another credit union gave us later). I applied for a used car loan yesterday...denied. I make good money..we have great credit. Whatever. Connexus(?) said they would come through for us again. I've been banking here for almost a year and honestly regret not checking the reviews sooner. Every single time I come in, I end up waiting what feels like forever just to speak with someone. The service is consistently slow and inefficient. After finally checking Yelp and seeing the rating isn't even 2 stars, it made complete sense. I would personally give this place 0 stars if that were an option. On top of that, the $1,000 monthly Zelle transaction limit is extremely inconvenient. I opened this account specifically because my boss uses this bank for printing checks, and it was supposed to simplify getting paid. Instead, it has made paying my rent a complete headache. I have a 825 credit score and I just opened a new loan with these people for a car and I've only made three car payments my most recent car payment I made a mistake paid it four days early but put the money into my savings account with them and not on to my car loan they've charged me a late fee and they will not budge I'm very upset about it Brian Best is not doing his best. Please reconsider banking here. I am a fairly new customer and have had terrible experiences banking with GTE. 1. Employees email you and never respond 2. GTE locks your card for every online purchase (over exaggerated, but it feels like it), and they did not notify me of potential fraud. They just shut down your card and automatically decline all transactions. It would be best to offer customers the option to approve or reject a transaction rather than requiring a call. Lord forbid if it is after hours. 3. The employees are untrained, seem as if they just graduated high school, lack empathy, and are outsourced overseas. One person stated another bank's name, lol. Oh, and a "supervisor" I spoke to sounded like he just woke up. Terrible impression. 4. There is no option to receive transaction notifications only for deposits. 5. GTE's website seems as if it were built in 1998. I recommend that people file complaints with the State Attorney's General Office and NCUA. I called to activate my debit card. They told me I won $100 in rewards and they would transfer me but instead it hung up on me when I called the next day, they basically insinuated I was lying. I've been with them for so many years. the customer service has changed quite a bit. I already was thinking of changing banks now I definitely will. I cannot believe they don't care more about maintaining relationship with someone who's been banking with them for this but they could care less. I have been a member since 1988. I am leaving and its long overdo. The fees never end and I paid $70 for a tiny checkbook. As someone else here mentioned, I had a case of fraud and had to open a new account last year after 37 years. There is no benefit to being a member at this credit union. Is it even a credit union anymore? They offer $50 for you to con one of your friends into joining. My friends have been telling me for years to leave and the time is now. They are horrible! I had a car loan with GTE - I never missed a payment and actually paid lump sums on the loan and just paid my loan off early. I was trying to transfer the remaining money I had in my account to my normal checking account with another bank. GTE charged me $2.00 to transfer the funds - that $2.00 fee put my in overdraft and then they charged me $37 for an overdraft fee. They caused the overdraft. When I called customer service the woman I spoke to didn't even let me finish my sentence and basically said "there is nothing we can do". They won't approve a reversal of an overdraft - THAT THEY CAUSED!! I will NEVER (and I don't use that word often) do business with GTE again nor will I refer anyone I know to GTE. They have no concept of customer service and lost a customer over $37. read more

She explained I needed to physically go to each establishments to stop further transactions (although some were online businesses) She went on to reactivated my current card and rudely dismissed me! And if the businesses continued to auto withdraw within the next 30 days, I could come back to complete dispute paperwork at $35 a pop per business~ WTH? How frustrating! read more

Had 9 fraud issues; finally closed out checking and savings. Only account left was mortgage. Called for payoff, on hold for 37 min was cut off. Called back, on hold for 28 minutes and when transferred was again cut off. Called back, finally spoke to rep who was "SO SORRY" transferred me. Heard someone answer and hung up. Called back another 30+ minutes. Finally got to rep who emailed me pay off. Any time I have ever called it's always at least 30 min. They would not tell us which one was affected. There's one for $3k and another one for &136k. They charged me for statements when I didn't want them, as I do online payments. After finally getting them to help, they supposedly stopped the statements and reversed the fee that had been charged. The next month, the fee was again extracted from our account. This time, they said that it was because my wife, with whom we have the accounts jointly, was not signed up for online billing. So to stop the fee, she would need to create an account just to cancel paper statements. Since we only use GTE for car payments, and I have been the one taking care of the payments, it seems like they are doing this on purpose because most people would get fed up and just leave the fee. I have been a member of GTE for over 20 years have had a mortgage and 2 car loans (Never Late) and have a Credit card with them for that long as well. When I receive the my statement depending on the Amount I either pay what I owe "In Full" through an external banker or from another GTE account, 5-7 days before the due date in case of any hiccups. I check my account this week and realized that there was a late fee and interest fee charged to my Credit Card account. I contact my other bank where the payment should have come from to be paid to GTE and was informed that the payment was returned as undelivered. The bank agent got online with me and a GTE agent and verified that everything was correct which it was and ask the GTE agent that considering it was not the customer's fault, can we get a waiver on the Late fee and Interest charge even as a one time courtesy and was told no they cant do it. Stay far away from the Credit Union, they claimed that you are a member but treat you worse than a 1st time non returning customer. read more

I switched from online banking to getting a statement mailed to me. The closing date was the end of the month and as of today, 6/8/2025, I have not received the statement. Since the due date is 6/15, I am forced to improvise a payment from their website to send in. I was also given incorrect information about receiving mailed statements when the car loan was initiated. I have never seen a statement take so long to arrive that I have to go to these lengths to avoid a late payment fee. Rest assured that I will be ending my relationship with them as soon as I can and will never use their services again for anything. read more

Needed to cash a rent check from my tenant. Automated 'zoom' type teller ATM, no agents or windows. After pressing 'Start' I was put into a waiting que. A video agent finally appeared. Thumbprint needed on the check, had to wite my DL info on the back of the check. Was charged a $5 fee to cash the check. Entire transaction took just under 15 minutes. read more

I have been with GTE for over 20yrs. In the past year I've noticed an increase in fees. Within the last month I have been charged $210 in over draft fees. The first $35 I had money in my account but per GTE I did not when charge was pending. I was then charged a second $35 charge for $10 because my account went into the negative because of the first charge. I attempted to go into the bank on Waters to get hard copy proof that I had a pending charge (as that was the reason they were saying I deserved a fee) and spoke to an assistant manager by the name of Louis who was rude and never even bothered to look up my account only directed me to "go see a teller and close your account"My husband and I opened an account with another bank and had everything transferred over. On 3/07 I went into the bank to close my account but could not because I have a pending charge. On 3/10 I called in to GTE to close my account. And was told I was charged a checking fee. I paid the checking fee and she said now ok to close. I was told it was closed. I checked in on 03/14 and my account was still open at -293. $105 of which was overdraft fees and a $7 over draft fee balance. I was told by the rep that the previous rep should've been able to see the pending fees and told me the account would and could not be closed and it was my fault and the charges would not be reversed. I checked the bank account and saw nothing pending prior to closing and was told by two reps all was ok to close. During a state of emergency (hurricanes) GTE was charging members over draft fees when taking money out of the account for cash on hand and pushing through charges so they could rack up fees. They refused to reverse charges even though most of Tampa was out of power and no way to put cash back in the bank..let alone safely doing so with traffics lights not functioning. This businesses practices are unethical and when I try to get out of it, I can't even close my account because they keep adding fees. If I could give zero, I would!! DO NOT apply for a mortgage with GTE!! As of 2022-current date, GTE financial have been "in bed" with investment firms and the homeowners insurance companies to steal low income and moderate income people's homes. GTE FINANCIAL literally force place hurricane/wind storm riders even if your home is not in a FEMA FLOOD ZONE. GTE habitually makes up amounts owed, and systemically applies the most expensive hurricane riders up to $$36k per month. My insurance went from $1300/yr to $12000.00 per year because GTE forced placed a hurricane riders on the existing homeowners insurance that I already had PIF at $1300/year. Oh, BTW then GTE fast tracks homeowners into foreclosure in effort to steal the home assets. DO NOT get a mortgage with GTE!! This company is the worst. They will delete your mortgage account and refuse to work out a payment plan because they only want millionaires living in Florida. read more

Call two weeks ago for a payoff figure. Over $7000.00. Wrote a check that day for the amount they told me. Today I get a call from them stating that I was short $6.00 and change. I said, "Send me a bill, and I will pay it." She tells me she can't and that they will hold my thousands until I pay the balance. I said okay, I will write a check and put it in the mail. I asked her for my policy number and the address to send the big old $6.00. She tells me that the balance changes every day so it might be a little more by the time they receive the check. At that point, I was done. I tell her no worries, I will send $10.00 to cover more than enough of the bill. She then tells me she can't give me the policy number or address over the phone. Over the years, they have shut down a large number of their locations and restricted hours only to weekdays. Those of us who work five days a week, often till 6:00 p.m., have no chance of using their services unless we take time off from work. Call them during business hours and you might remain on hold for a very long time, only to get someone who doesn't know the answers to your question. I don't know if this is a training issue, a hiring issue, or just a philosophical issue. It's been two hours since I logged on to discover money from my checking account is missing. A $2,000 payment earmarked to be paid from my GTE checking account to my GTE credit card account was withdrawn from checking but not posted to the credit card balance. What? Online chatted with a guy who said it needed to be researched and would take two to three days to resolved. Called and talked to someone who said it needed to be researched and would take two to three days to resolved. Asked to talk to someone with more authority but was told no one was available to talk to me. Emailed the downtown Tampa branch before its 9 a.m. opening time. Crickets. So one account is minus $2,000 and my credit card payment is still pending. Money has been removed from one account and no one can account for its whereabouts. This is not the first hiccup since I opened accounts with GTE earlier this year. In fact, this is more like heartburn. Recently I received a notice in the mail stating that my card was to be suspended due to the activities of some unscrupulous lout on Black Friday. But I shouldn't fear! No! I would get a new card in the mail by 2/18, and until then my compromised card would still work. Here we are on 2/18 and I've still not received my card. So I did the dutiful thing and called the bank. According to them, I have an OLD ADDRESS on file. How can this be? I changed my address IN PERSON at the local branch when my last card expired 8 months ago and I'd not received the replacement. I know that it was changed because not only did I receive the NEW card then, but the POS Verification for Zip code now works with the proper one. After explaining this to the girl on the phone she had no answer. She will send me a new card, shipped via Fed Ex to the Proper Address. It should be here by Friday morning and someone will have to sign for it. I'm OK with that. I just don't get how their systems aren't communicating with each other. The address was changed, I did it in person. I know that I've received a replacement card at my current address before... so... the issue is on their end. They need to work harder at making things seamless for their customers. I don't like having to wait now for my card to come in. read more

In my time of bereavement GTE Financial refused to give me an official check to pay for my dad funeral even though the life Insurance deposit was more than double the amount of the funeral cost. When the check cleared within two days they put the life insurance check back on hold for five more days just to show me who is boss. I went to GTA financial to open a payee account for my brother Josh was to tell her that helped me explain to Josh that my brother has mental and other severe issues Josh in return said well hopefully your brother will drink himself to death and US taxpayers won't have to pay for him it took me a second and then I responded with some personal information for my childhood to explain why he has those issues Josh in return said he has a neighbor who's being abused and then I had to indulge more personal information about our childhood to get him to stop when we finally had the account set up Josh wanted to give me a credit line I said no thank you I don't have a nine to five job he then returned well how do you pay for groceries instead of grow my own food he kept grilling me and grilling me about how I get my money none of his business few days later I went back to the bank and dealt with another teller I needed to figure out how to get my brother money who lives in Ohio and I live in Florida my brother has no ID so that tell her suggested I open a second account so I could wire money to a friend and I could send the card to my brother so he could use the card the bank manager actually overnighted the bank card to my brother so he could use it few weeks later I get a call from Carla in the fraud department in Tampa accusing me of trying to commit fraud I said all charges on my account or authorized by me she said you cannot let your brother use the card I explained everything to her and even what Josh said in her words were that's a great opportunity for training she gave me 48 hours before they close the cards I put some more money in that account so my brother could get a place to stay because the weather in Ohio is getting really bad and I called and asked for a few days extension they told me no and said that I should have prepared better if I knew my brother was homeless and the weather was bad and instead of trying to help me and take some responsibility for their mistake they just want to blame me I am terrified and deeply saddened that Josh may get his wish this is a horrible place to bank read more

My Mortgage Company GTE Financial, has continuously and repeatedly struggled to pay my homeowners insurance premium timely from my escrow account. As you may be aware, many mortgages require escrow accounts from which taxes, PMI and insurance premiums are paid. The escrow account is funded from monthly mortgage payments and from direct payments. Year after year, GTE waits until the last minute to issue payment, with the consequence that on a yearly basis, I receive notices of cancellation from my insurance company and am forced to additional steps to prevent cancellation of my policy. This year, my insurance premium went up, I made sure GTE had the updated quote roughly a month before its due date, I also made multiple direct payments to my escrow account to make sure it was properly funded. Instead of issuing payment, GTE has bizarrely called me and asked if the monies paid directly to my escrow account were actually intended for my escrow account (one could ask : What else could funds deposited directly into escrow account actually be for? When I pay my cellphone bill, my carrier doesn't call ask if I money I paid them was intended for some other purpose) I have received another notice of cancellation of my insurance, if GTE were pay the premium today, it is actually doubtful that it would reach my carrier timely if only sent via regular mail. GTE are required to pay it timely based on federal and state law. read more

GTE IS VERY FEE HAPPY!! I have overdraft to my savings but you can only do 6 transactions a month. GTE goes in and moves money around. Yes it is in the member agreement that they can NO TIME SPECIFIC (they get you with the fine print). My $250 fee was 7 NSF charges after they moved money from kids accounts on the weekend before the 1st. I would have moved the money had I not had the 6 limit.
