I visited in July 2025 with some friends. We were visiting Ohio Amish country for the day and decided to stop by this store. My friends really wanted to visit the Guggisberg cheese factory but they were closed for the day. This store offers not only cheese but other smaller grocery and household items such as butter, apple butter, mugs, t-shirts, etc. I don't like cheese so I didn't buy any cheese. My friends may have bought small cheese blocks but I can't remember. They did sample some cheese which they liked. MY PURCHASES -- I bought an Italian bread dipping mix which is a small tin of herbs. I finally tried the dip in April 2026 by adding olive oil the dipping bread in it. The spice mix is too strong so I don't like it that much and I don't believe it was made locally. I also bought Apple butter which is locally made and tastes good. The Apple butter is too sweet for me though so I've hardly eaten it but it goes well with toast. If you're in the area, stop by this local store. Part deli, part gift shop, part factory. This cheese shop's claim to fame is is that they are the creators of baby swiss. They are apparently now one of the largest manufacturers of swiss cheese in the US. When you enter, there is a shop which is a combination of gift shop, cheese accessories and grocery items. There is signage that shows off their awards, talks about some of their history and also takes about the difference between regular and baby swiss. The deli where you can get freshly sliced cheese is in the back. The clerks were extremely friendly answering questions and providing samples of anything you want to try. Much like the outside, the inside continues the swiss theme. The reason I gave it four instead of five stars is the space itself. It was really congested even though it wasn't really all that crowded. I can't imagine what it would be like on a busier day. J don't know what, if anything can be done about this that, but it definitely can be hard yo navigate if you have mobility issues or don't like crowds. When we pulled up to the Cheese Factory, I was so excited!! It was cheesy the way it was all decorated in the American version of the Swiss Alps, Sound of Music, Julie Andrew's Singing "The Hills are Alive"...lol!! I lived in Europe for about 4 years and it's not like this....lol But, it was very beautiful! I loved the bell chiming in the bell tower!!! This place is known for their award winning Baby Swiss Cheese so of course we had to buy some!!! They didn't offer any Cheese samples at all, not even in a controlled way!! A sample or 2 would have been nice.. We bought some Colby and some pepper jack along with a schnitzel seasoning packet and some German candy... We had a nice visit and you can look through the glass window walls and watch them make their advertised 84,000 pounds per day!!! The Baby Swiss is super Good!! Cheeese! Lol. I have been to this place many times over the years especially since I have family in the area and each and every time I visit this place I am like a little kid in a candy store. I can attest their baby Swiss is the best in the country, hands down!!! Even when I am not in NE Ohio visiting with family members I can still buy this cheese at several different Amish markets across the east coast and I always do when I am living the vegetarian not vegan lifestyle. I can't say enough good things about this place and the people who work here. It's just great in every way possible! If you are ever in the area make sure to stop in and take a tour and enjoy the many free samples they have to offer, but most definitely make sure to buy a 2 lb wheel of Guggisberg Baby Swiss to take home with you. I'm not big on Swiss cheese (actually, I don't think I really like it in the first place), but this experience is definitely worth having. They let you try all sorts of different Swiss and other cheeses they make here. When I was there, I don't think there were any other customers around, so it was nice to kind of have the whole store to myself to roam around in. There's also lots of quirky Amish items available for sale, as well as unique brands (like of soda) probably only sold in this region or in Amish areas. We ended up getting a mixed set of cheeses to snack on and bought crackers they sold here to go with them. If you ever plan on buying cheese from here to snack on, make sure to bring the proper accompaniments and sides (like crackers) to go with them instead of purchasing them here, unless you want to support their business in that way. The main problem I had was that we couldn't see any of the equipment running when I was there. I wanted to see how they make some of the cheese. There are also no places to dine/sit at inside that I noticed. You have to go outside to the picnic tables across the field. They need to mow the lawns more often here, unless they're trying to deter people from sitting at those picnic tables. read more

This is my favorite cheese store in this part of Ohio. Their award winning Swiss is really nice as well as the butter cheese! They have so Mack's for the road, (jerkies and crackers and sodas, etc), but they manage to keep the tchotchkes and other junk to a minimum. Too many other cheese stores or bakeries fill the aisles with unrelated junk, which is awful when you've specifically come for the high quality cheese. read more

Came here for some of the famous baby Swiss, and it was a pretty quick visit. You can watch the cheese being made, but they only make the cheese on certain days and stop by 12pm. The store doesn't offer many samples of different cheeses like some of the other shops in the area. Worth coming just to try the baby Swiss since it's the most well-known in the area. read more

Continuing on my cheese review kick... Guggisberg Cheese prides itself on its Swiss cheese-making history. So much so that their building looks like it was taken straight from the Swiss Alps and dropped into the middle of nowhere (aka Ohio). Inside, you can watch how they make cheese from start to finish (minus milking the cow). Parking here can suck because the only parking lot is across the street. You'll end up having to run across the busy street, avoiding horse-drawn buggies and cars along the way. Unlike Heini's on the other side of town, Guggisberg focuses mainly on swiss cheese, although they do have a few others (colby, cheddar, etc.) You can't pork out on the samples here because of the smaller selection of cheese. So go to Heini's to eat a lot of sample cheese and get a bigger heini (haha) or go to Guggisberg cheese to get a bigger, um, guggisberg? read more

Heinis is overpriced and overcrowed and most importantly not as good. Guggisberg you can buy cheese at $3 a pound and its the best ever! I was disappointed in this place. It is a pretty ride out here but it is very small inside looks like it would be really big but it isn't. No samples and just a window that was hard to see into to see cheese making. They were cleaning the big bowls when we got here. We were all over this area and the cheese was good here but the highest price we have seen. read more

A cute little cheese shop with a big presence in the community and following. I visited on a Saturday afternoon on a cloudy April day. Somehow about 30-40 or so people where able fit into the shop while I was there. No worries, lines move quickly. This was my first visit and came only for the cheese. Immediately upon walking in my eyes experienced sensory overload from the assorted food items on the shelves and cheese throughout the store. There was cheese to taste test, which I was grateful for. I have been coming down here from Cleveland with my Grandpa since I was a little girl. I remember watching them make the cheese through those great big windows.... and sampling the baby Swiss and it melting in my mouth. As I got older, and I was driving and making those trips alone, I ALWAYS had a list from family members of what cheeses to bring them. Until my grandfather passed 7 years ago, he was good as my passenger at least 2 times a summer. I now live out of state, and just came back for my family reunion... and today my girl fiend and I made the drive -- and everything is the same as before..... we sampled the cheeses and bought a bunch .... and some jellies and butters too.... The best part of this is that I have been coming here for 30 years, and it is the same as when i first started making this trip. I have to be honest and say that I was anticipating this place to be much larger. I was a tad bit disappointed to find that it was a small shop but that quickly went away when I tried the Baby Swiss...OMG...the Baby Swiss! It is by far the best cheese that I have tried and at the cheapest price I have ever paid. The Aged Swiss is also fantastic! I love that you are able to sample the cheeses before buying them. The price is really what I cannot get over! I paid under $4 for a pound of the Baby Swiss! I went here once years and years ago, and since then have seen the famous Baby Swiss at a few places around Cincinnati (Findlay Market, the Hyde Park Kroger cheese case, Jungle Jims). I was really excited to go back, because I love cheese a ridiculous amount. I got two little containers of cheese curds -- not as good as the ones you get in Wisconsin, but still excellent by Ohio standards. The horseradish ones were amazing, and VERY strong. The person working the register (assistant manager?) was very helpful in assisting us in sending a box of cheeses to some friends out of state. This cheese store is a must-do when traveling through Amish country. read more

What a cool little place to check out while strolling through Amish country. Parking is available right beside the building, and we had no problems finding a spot at 12:15 on a Saturday. They also have a neat little garden / pond / fountain area where you can kick back in the sun or shade and relax a bit or chat. Guggisberg Cheese is definitely an active cheese making facility, but its also a very cool little retail store where you can sample cheeses and such before purchasing. I sampled everything they had (thank goodness for bikes to take off calories!) and walked away with some summer sausage, homemade butter, cheeses, and a couple other nick nacks. For those (like me) that didn't pre-plan to transport milk products back in the heat, they have thermo bags, coolers, and ice for sale in the store. Well done! read more

If you really plan on going here... go here before going to Heini's Cheese Chalet. The selection of cheeses was not near as much as Heini's, Heini's had about 50 to 75 samples, Guggisberg Cheese Factory had about 10 samples. Plus this place is so small it gets very crowded with a dozen people. Almost all the free samples were in one small area and it was very hard to get to them. Maybe we sampled three different cheeses before others came up from the other side and pushed in. Side note: The owners of Guggisberg need to check out the layout of Heini's Cheese Chalet then make changes. Heini's has toothpicks that you use to sample were as Guggisberg had metal tonqs. Metal tonqs that touch each person's fingers. OMG! This is 100% unsanitary! read more

During our visit to Amish Country, one of our friends insisted that we stop at this particular cheese shop and we were not disappointed. From the outside, it is a unique building made to look European so it is hard to miss. Guggisberg is the original creator of baby swiss cheese! How is baby swiss different from regular swiss you might ask. The baby swiss isn't aged as long so it has a milder flavor and the holes are not as large. See what kind of interesting information you can pick up from just one visit!! They really know how to make swiss perfectly as evidenced by the fact that they are rated #1 in the Nation as the US Grand Champion and just 3 years ago they were the World Champion in Swiss Cheese. You have to be at the top of your game to excel in anything worldwide!! There are samples of other flavors and I'm told that Amish Butter Cheese is very popular, too. Also, if you get there in the morning, you might be lucky enough to see them make the actual cheese there. We all bought so many tasty morsels of cheese and meats that our large group of 18 made a dinner of it that very night, along with crackers and beverages of course. What a delicious repast! Cheese and meats are very good especially the baby Swiss. The shop is very small and very busy. They have a couple cash registers but only opened one and it took forever to check out. We decided to check out the winery it is located in the Inn. We decided to taste the wines. Did not like a single one we could not recommend any of them but to each his/her own. I went here this summer; what a great little find. We set out intending to go to Heini's, but when we got there they were closed (Sunday, sheesh). So we decided to give Guggie's a try. It's a cute little building along a winding, twisty road (watch out for the buggies, eh?). You can ask to taste most anything, but you do have to ask, which limits your cheese intake. Well, if you have no shame it won't limit your intake. I wonder how many samples you'd have to ask for before they said no...? Their star cheese is swiss. It is quite good. There are also other products in the store, things like jellies, jams, spreads, crackers, etc. I learned very quickly to read the labels in these kinds of places. That great little mustard that you pick up might be manufactured in New Jersey, so check the label if that sort of thing is important to you. Overall I like Heini's a bit better, but if you're in the area, stop by Guggie's, too, and pick up some Swiss while you're at it. read more

It wasn't that busy on a Tuesday afternoon, so we asked for several samples and bought some cheeses - all of which have to be sliced & wrapped which takes some time. A lot of people recommended this place and it was one of my first cheese places I ever tried in the area...then I went to Heini's. The two can't even compare. Heini's has every type of cheese you can imagine and then even some you can't such as chocolate spicy swiss. They had about five types here and you couldn't try any...Heini's had hundreds of free samples. Staff wasn't very informative either and didn't explain any of their products. He Swiss was the best I've ever had. We bought 8 pounds for about $27! That amount buys me about 3 pounds in Columbus. The cheeses were all great. Loved the Swiss, Amish Butter and Bacon. Was looking forward to seeing some cheese being made. They really hype the experience. Watching the process actually means standing in front of a CCTV monitor placed near the ceiling or looking through two cloudy windows. One window is directly behind two large vats so there's nothing really to see except the side of the vats. The other window lets you view empty cheese molds sitting on tables. I saw two guys standing together talking and doing non cheese-making things. Not an interesting tourist experience unless your expectations are extremely low.
