The store has good items at not so good prices, but the biggest issue is how the employees are treated by the management. I walked into the store to buy something, just to hear someone who looked like a manager yell at a newbie employee over what sounded like a really small mistake. He fired him LIVE, right in the store. I asked the new employee how long he'd been working there, he said not even 2 days. What a terrible establishment, I can't believe this type of behavior is allowed in the workplace. They didn't even properly train him, and I totally feel for him. What kind of establishment has so little regard for their store that they fire employees live? Zero decency, rattled me enough to write a review when I normally would never write any review. I went in to get several games for Christmas presents. I wish I'd read these reviews first, I probably wouldn't have gone there. But - since I did, I'll say the young man that helped me was helpful and took me right to the games I inquired about. I didn't experience any of the rudeness a few others have mentioned, but the other employee was wearing his mask under his chin and that did give me pause. I stayed away from him. Their prices are higher then Amazon as you would expect from a business, each game I bought I could have gotten $5 cheaper online, but I wanted to support a local business. So I paid $30 more for the 6 games I bought and was happy to do so until I read the reviews that mentioned them suggesting our Guv should be kidnapped or worse. They were out of one of the games I wanted, but I assume that just means it's popular, I'm having trouble finding it online too. I made the decision to quickly grab the game and checkout, but I was extremely uncomfortable to interact with an unmasked employee and had to use a pen that I'm sure is not disinfected after every use to sign for my credit card transaction. I hadn't read any reviews for this store prior to going and now I really wish I had. Has a good selection of items that are sorted decently well. Unfortunately, the selections they have are quite pricey in comparison to anywhere else. They have a kiosk within the store to help identify if they have an item in stock. This is quite great, but when I looked up a few games, they were marked as 'out of print'. When I went to other sites, they were able to produce each game that GOB marked as out of print. The site is also very difficult to navigate with all of the visual clutter. It's great if you want to quickly pick up a game last minute, but if you don't mind waiting a couple of days for delivery, everywhere else (local and non-local) will be cheaper. read more

They have a large store, lots of different items but it feels like too many categories and not a very good stock of any one thing in particular. I asked if they would order a back copy of a comic I was looking for and they guy helping me tried to explain how the comic book supply chain works like I was an idiot and that he couldn't possibly get it. Man all those bad reviews by people who were complaining about masks must feel like absolute idiots now... unless they are completely ignoring the science they said they follow and are keeping their heads in the sand when it comes to the hypocrisy and ludicrously of the whole thing years later. About the STORE, which is what sites like this are for, they have had rare games, and yes I have found better deals here than online too as well as games that are hard to find. Off of busy 14 mile in Clawson. Private parking lot. Inside is a very large main room crammed full of fancy board games, role playing games, and miniature games, including a lot of figures. A fairly large comic book section. On the positive side, they have quite a few older RPG books, used but in good shape. The prices are high, and the staff isn't very friendly or helpful. They have a very large gaming room for people to get together and game, with two clean bathrooms. They have a shelf of games there. This is the reason I boosted them from two to three stars even with the staff and prices. read more

As soon as I walked in, I noticed none of their employees wore masks. When I peeked my head around the corner into the game room, the 10+ people who were in there, also did not wear masks. During the COVID-19 crisis, the storefront closed but the website advised a "Buy 1, Get 1 free - All games, system, accessories, mixed included" without limitations. I ordered two used Dreamcast controllers for $9.95 each, one Dreamcast Memory Card for $7.95, and one Dreamcast Jump Pack for $7.95. Under the terms of the advertised sale, I should have paid $17.90 (before tax) but I was charged $35.80 before tax ($37.95 after tax) representing the full price of the items. The items pictured on the website were first-party OEM items made by Sega. When I picked up the items in the parking lot of the store, I was told that the sale advertised online was "in store only" and the difference would not be refunded to me but I was allowed to pick up to three free items to offset the four items I'd purchased. Inside the bag containing my order was one third-party Dreamcast controller bearing the checkered flag logo of Performance, a third-party Performance tremor pack bearing a "jump pak" price sticker, and a third-party memory card. When I inquired about the missing controller, the GOB employee advised that he would have to call the store's owner who was busy meeting with local officials "to lobby against the unconstitutionality of Governor Whitmer's orders." The employee later told me that, per the GOB owner, my money would not be refunded to me for the missing controller. Instead, I was to be given store credit because--as stated by the employee--"the owner said that doing a partial refund through PayPal is too difficult." When I asked to speak with the owner about the entire situation--including the items which did not match my order, the employee said that he would call the owner and provide my number. After 45 minutes, I called the store again to determine what was happening and how I could return the items for a refund. The employee expressed surprise that the owner had not yet called me back and stated that he could not accept anything for a return because the store was not yet open to the general public. I filed a PayPal dispute and provided a detailed description of the issue, containing screenshots of the products advertised on the GOB website along with the items I received (all bearing the store's price stickers) for comparison to show that I'd not received anything I had ordered. PayPal ultimately refunded me the money but said that I had to pay to ship the items back to the store as it was still not yet open to the public. I did so (including the free items) and emailed the manager to determine how best to recover the shipping fees I incurred to fix his mistake. I sent the manager a PayPal invoice for the shipping amount along with a picture of the USPS receipt. The owner cancelled the PayPal invoice without explanation. Attached are screenshots of the entire email conversation I had with the owner. Aside from my emails to the owner, the single PayPal invoice I sent him, and his response, there's been no other contact between us. Ultimately, I'm utterly dismayed by this owner's business practices and general attitude. This could have been resolved with a simple phone call. In the end, I wasted money paying to ship items that I never ordered back to a business which expressed no interest in addressing the situation and only wanted to keep my money despite the glaring errors in the transaction. read more

This is a large store and with a nice inventory. Also a good size gaming room. The staff is courteous and helpful. Unfortunately the management is the issue. Most things are overpriced. I know it's common to find things cheaper online, but here it's ridiculous. I don't mind paying more to support the local brick & mortar store, but they have many things priced at a premium. Their reward points is a joke. Comics are severely overpriced. They also have some overly restrictive rules about food in the gaming area hope to sell all food in the place. We wanted to have a friends birthday there and despite even offering to pay a fee to bring in a pizza and cake, the owner would not budge. Overall there are other game stores in the vicinity and will take my business there in most cases. read more

I can only speak from my own experience, but I enjoy the open and bright store and have always found the staff friendly and helpful. They have always worn masks when I was in the store this year. The prices on some games are higher than what you would pay online but the markup is small and the prices on the used games, miniatures, and role playing books is good. Plus the selection is amazing and the staff was happy to make recommendations for me. I have been to a lot of game stores, some in Chicago and Houston. This place is the best for board games. I liked the consignment and sale section and the enormous selection of Euro-style games. I felt the prices were fair especially for those that are hard to find elsewhere. They have games for all ages. The salespeople were friendly and helpful. They gave me room to look. I enjoy seeing the game and reading the back of the box which you can't do online.I would shop here again when I am in the area. read more

There are things about this store which are great, and there are areas where they really fall short. Don't get me wrong with this review - I have been shopping there since the early days, and will continue to shop there. This review is to prepare you for the experience. The Good: The selection of pan and paper gaming and board games is unbeatable in the area. In fact, I have been to gaming stores in many other states and not found an equal for selection. From early editions of Dungeons & Dragons to GURPS to mid-year selections, to current. Chances are good that you will find most of the books you are looking for. Granted, there are some short-comings, but those are typically because people are not trading those books in (like New World of Darkness or the original Marvel gaming system. If you are a miniature gamer, their selection of Warmachine, Hordes, and many others is what you are looking for. They have a large open gaming area in the back. There is enough room for a Magic tournament and a handful of campaigns. Unlike some gaming locations around the country, use of the room is free (unless you are playing in a tournament, then there is a cost for that). The staff is helpful and usually knows where to find what you are looking for.They also have a gaming bonus point program where you will get roughly $5 in product for every $100 you spend (some variances here and there). Each month, they have a new list of items you can trade your points in for. The Bad: Their pricing is higher than what you are going to find on Amazon. While a 10-20% variance might be expected, when you find something you want which is 100% or more than the price on Amazon, things are out of hand. I understand that it would be hell to go through and remark everything on a weekly basis - going through every few months would make sense. Yes, you will lose a little bit of money here or there, the product will move faster as people buy more. Granted, the selection is awesome - but there is no reason to price something $50 when you can find it elsewhere for $15. Their POS system is horrible. It may take 5 minutes or more to check out with just a few products as the workers have to look up each items. The workers even make jokes about how drawn out the process is. The Ugly They mark up brand new comics - not just variants - all comics. If the MSPR (which is marked on the comic) is $3.99, don't try to sell it for $4.25. I have heard the excuse that they don't order as many a comic book stores, so they have to make up the cost. That may have worked when they first got into comics, but they are ordering as much as some of the smaller stores in the area. Stop trying to skimp customers. There is another reviewer who stated that the business goes overboard with their emails. This is not a lie. There are times in which five or more emails will go out in a week. I have received two or more in a single day. This is way way way too much. Start wrapping emails and only send out a few a week. Direct people in an email to the store's calendar on the website instead of listing everything in a long email and then sending the same thing out a few days later. read more

Placed an online order back in February 26th. I called today March 24th asking for a status of the order as I had not received it. They had in their notes that I had a charge back and that I was no longer allowed to order from them at all even thought the charge back was their mistake. Apparently they don't have the professionalism to call me and let me know of this issue. Instead they take your money and hope you forget. These guys are real pieces of work here. Never in all my life and my 25 years of comic collecting have I seen a shop filled with unprofessional jerks. Please let this be a warning to others, don't waste your time here. This store is one of the bigger disappointments I have found in both board games and comic books in area. The staff is not very helpful and sometimes I can find them quite rude. They mark up every comic 25% over the retail price and their customer loyalty pts allows you to redeem every $1000 you spend in store for a couple slim jims and a can of pepsi. I have gone to this store on and off for a couple years because it was the only thing near my house and every time I bring someone new there they are severely underwhelmed. They have a large game space that they do not even let you bring water bottles into unless they were purchased at the store. Their magic singles are over priced and poorly catalogued and they will spam your email with dozens of "friendly alerts" that will make you regret giving them your email in the first place. I am not sure how a store this big can get everything so wrong while still not being able to reliably stock current issues and volumes of comics. Gatekeepers on 12 mile in Berkley and Eternal Games in Warren are just a couple of the stores within a stones throw that do just about everything better than this store. Looking at their 3 star rating I wonder how they even maintain that level of mediocrity given the condition of this store and the way they treat their customers. read more

The new location is a marked improvement over the old one in Madison Heights, but pricing I'd still at a premium compared to competing stores. The owner, Ryan Johnson, runs and judges large Magic: the Gathering tournaments despite not being a sanctioned judge, and has displayed IMO a significant dearth of knowledge when it comes to the rules. I'd accept this at an FNM, but not anything with a large number of players (i.e. 24-48 at a prerelease), and significant prizes on the line. Speaking of prizes, prize support is sub-par compared to similarly-sized competitors. This alone wouldn't condemn a business for me, but when you combine that with an arbitrarily stringent return policy and customer service attitude that seems modeled on the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons, I'd advice anyone looking into comics, collectibles or games to enter at their own risk. read more

Paying full retail price for a game is one thing that I have come to expect when shopping at a brick and mortar store, but there's no excuse for marking games above MSRP. I would estimate that half of their games are marked above the suggested retail price. Their board game selection is good and the employees are generally friendly. I'm really unimpressed by these one star reviews over returns. I worked at a large books/video/music store chain for many years--they did store credit only as well. It's not unheard of. I mean, it sucks when it's happening to YOU, but GOB isn't alone in this practice. Namely, I would guess, because chains are being put out like candles by large online retailers that can offer better prices in exchange for immediacy. And while I play D&D and Magic with a group of friends, for a locally-owned novelty store, I find the prices at GOB to be about what you expect to pay at brick and mortar, outside of Wal-Mart. In all honesty though, when it comes to this store, I couldn't give two shits about games. QQ more noobs. I LOVE Deadpool. When I was a kid, it was the X-Men, and Gambit specifically. I used to go to the chain store I eventually ended up working for and just sit in their book isle and read whatever I could with X-Men on the label. Now that I'm an adult, and have rediscovered comics, I get my kicks and giggles from reading Deadpool. The thing I love about GOB is that the retail guys are just as big of nerds about their favorite titles as I am about mine. They don't try and rush me away when I get on a long sphiel about why old, gritty Captain America is my favorite. They don't pick on me for having a pull on everything with Deadpool in the title, in fact, they're super cool about being shameless enablers. After a recent move, I now live twice as far from the store as I did before, but I won't go anywhere else. If they see a new Deadpool title, they automatically pull it aside for me, even if I haven't yet requested the title. I LOVE that. Also, I get a few cents off for having the subscriptions. They usually always have my favorite candy bar and cold frappucino and they don't turn their nose up at me even though I'm a woman. You can say that doesn't happen anymore, but you'd be a liar. At any rate, GOB is a comfortable store with laid back guys. You can harass them about return policies all you want, but all stores have those policies and all stores have newbie employees full of misinformation. Shit happens. Personally, I have no problem with store credit. I mean, sure, it forces me to spend the money at the store regardless, but considering how often I shop there...not really a big deal to me. read more

The new iteration of GOB is nice. I like the amount of room available to walk around and peruse the games, periodicals, etc. I thought on a few of the vintage items the price was a touch high compared to some of the online options but if you want it right now chances are GOB will have it for you and you can have it immediately. They haven't quite finished setting the place up entirely but the new gaming room is much bigger and I think those that come here to game will be pleasantly surprised. I was surprised that they're only open til 9 p.m. on Saturday which seemed to me to be early but that's their choice, I guess. I don't play a lot of board games or read comics/graphic novels, so I can't really speak much on behalf of those parts of the store. I imagine they are overpriced though if the Retro Video game section is a solid reflection of their overall business. I've been in multiple times to look at their retro video game collections. They have a small to moderate selection of games compared to other Vintage Video Game retailers in the Metro Detroit area. Their products are VERY overpriced compared to other retailers. Their prices are usually about 25%-30% more expensive than the current average on Retro video games, from what I've noticed. Disc Replay on Hall Rd. in Sterling Heights is usually right on par with online prices, or a little below, and usually has a much larger selection. I rarely frequent GOB anymore because of this reason. A few Examples: Pokemon Red/Yellow/Blue - GBC -- Disc Replay: $24.99 GOB: $31.99 Zelda: A Link to the Past - SNES -- Disc Replay: $29.99 GOB: $39.99-$49.99 Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 - GBA -- Ebay: $12-$14 GOB $19.99 Almost all of their games are overpriced. I simply cannot recommend this place. It is populated solely by the worst kind of stuck up "Magic the Gathering" elitists. These are the kind of people who shun those they see as newcomers rather than welcome them. Please know that they DO NOT honor their returns and exchange policy and DO NOT test their used games for functionality before selling them. My younger brother dropped about 30 bucks on a game that didn't work, only to have the actual owner of the business refuse him a refund. In between his strained asthmatic wheezing and threats to call the police, he mentioned he "can't be expected to test every game," then proceeded to accuse his customer of being lazy. I used to shop here, but like the pretentious night club that looks down on first timers, this store is not worth it.
